DC-220 Russian EGS (Finally!) - TheWhiteWolf   (Oct 03, 2009, 1:58 pm)
Never did give an EGS... Whoops. I'm notorious for putting off these things, and I apologize for that. I'm glad this wasn't a demo game or some such!

I took, what seemed to me, a weak replacement position because I was tired of listening to my wife complain about abandonments. Then she abandoned it. *sigh* Well, not all of us can fight through burn-out and come out smelling like trampled roses. Ben, Michael, congratulations to the three of us for surviving. Alex, thanks for making that possible. Jeff, congratulations getting as far as you did, and in a replacement position. Most of all, thanks to Mike Sims for resurrecting this game and letting me satisfy my compulsive personality. *Can't leave it unfinished!*
I won't speak to strategy, as I really had none, but I did enjoy seeing the French killing machine break down and stop working. ;o)

dc220 Game end - Draw! - jeffcole08   (Sep 22, 2009, 11:29 am)
I'm French, I can hate anyone I wish, with or without cause.

The start of the game seems ages ago, but I remember pulling a fast one on Russia at the start to get into the Black Sea.  I then managed to NMR in Fall 1901, which I'd like to think was the reason I didn't get very far in the game, but I realise in reality that my stupidity in Fall 1901 has little to do with it!

I had an initial plan with Italy to take out Austria, but Italy disappeared and I never really got any decent dialogue going with my neighbours after that .  As Turkey I was able to mount a fairly solid defence as the hordes first took Bulgaria, and then closed in on my home centres.  My fleet in the Black Sea was consistently being disrupted by the Russian navy, stopping it taking advantage of it's good position.

After that, it was what I thought would be a slow death, with France advancing in the Med, Austria and Russia continuing to squeeze and my existence in the game threatened...and then the game entered a stasis period, to be resurrected a few short weeks ago with a new GM and a "stop France" proposal. I was a very junior partner in this, ordering as I was told...and I somehow emerged from this as a one centre power being part of a draw, which I'm overjoyed with.

For what it's worth, I don't think France could have soloed...the stop France alliance seemed to be working well (apart from a few initial misorders!) and we seemed pretty tight...France was about to face the English fleets from the North and wouldn't be getting to 18 any time soon.

In closing, thanks for those who played the game, particularly replacement players.  And thanks to the GMs for doing their bit!

dc220 Game end - Draw! - psychosis1973   (Sep 22, 2009, 8:20 am)
I'm one of the old lags in this game, being in from the start...

That

So I found myself holding the reins of an Austrian rump state pushed

eager to lash out at those who had dealt us misfortune. So we formed
a merry brotherhood. And invited the monstrous Brit to join in,
because without Alex, we would have been sad, pathetic, and quickly

Fortunately, we all found that we had much in common - love for Elvis,
Neapolitan ice cream, and of course - stopping near-inevitable French
solos. It seemed well enough at first. Then, just when I was
reaching around to pat myself on the back for helping to engineer such
a wonderful coalition - this strange, undecipherable text began
appearing in my email box. Ah yes, I see it clearly now - those were
the good ideas of my allies, the same that I stupidly disregarded last
season and nearly cost us this draw. I daresay that the Frenchman
might have made his solo yet had this game persisted, and I would have
had owed my allies 1,000 lines of "I will not be a paste-eater on the
short bus" scribbled across the nearest chalkboard. But such was not
to be - whether out of boredom, distaste for the lengthy war of
attrition with England ahead, or perhaps the need to work and earn
money rather than play Diplomacy - Jeff chose to accept the draw.

So I tip my hat first to Jeff - for building this massive French
behemoth that caused me to repeatedly soil my diapers. Then to Alex,
whose strategic vision led him to join our cause - however sad and
pathetic and soon to be dead we may have appeared. Finally to Andy

Even more interesting is that earlier powers bailed on those small
powers that ended up sharing in the draw! This game is absolute
evidence that it always pays to play out a game - with some good
planning and creative diplomacy a game should never be shot.

Congrats to all! Be sure to post an EGS.

Fall orders are not revealed since we have 5 yes-votes to a DIAS.

See you next game!

Enjoy,

-mike

dc220 Game end - Draw! (dc220) psychosis1973 Sep 22, 08:20 am
I'm one of the old lags in this game, being in from the start...

Tensions rise on the western front as England and France line up everything they've got to face off... In the east? Not as much action as a few standoffs leave France the definite winner in Serbia - whose residents throw up arms, and go home to play parchese.

3rd game tonight!

We’ve got some hectic action going on, as France counters back at England with reasonable success, but gets overshadowed by the whopping build 3 for the Brits. Turkey survives another year in Smyrna , and Russian orders seem to indicate that they have no clue what anyone else is doing.

Now seeing as my probing for game names drew only a single suggestion, I guess it’s time to vote… “Back From the Dead” was proposed by our very own Russian! So let’s have it: Either “Andy that name sucks” or “Andy you rock”.

Votes with winter builds!

Just can't wait for a center to nab again
The game I love is makin' enemies of my friends
And I cant wait to get on that road again

Just call me Willie and let's kick this game into high gear!

I will carelessly jump to the conclusion that you've all had about 2 months to diplome this turn, so a whole lotta time isn't likely going to be necessary - is that right? So let's get things rolling this Friday - 8/28, 6pm Central / 2300 GMT with the Spring 09 turn. If anyone would like, let me know by Thu that you need more time and I'll gladly extend a bit.

Note only 5 players remain - my original mail said there were 6, but Germany / Josh was just eliminated this turn.

As much as I would love to set a deadline for you guys, we are still waiting for a new Austria. As soon as someone joins I'll send out the information and a new deadline. Also I will be on the road starting on the 23rd. My husband is getting out of the Navy after 7 long years and we are moving to Maryland to be close to family. We should be on the road sometime on the 23rd and I'm guessamating that we should have some type of internet access around the 26th or 27th. I'll shoot an email out when we get back online.
