DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication - mistro   (Jul 29, 2009, 8:15 am)
Mark you have your GM's mixed up. And no I won't let you solo in the other game because there we have a game.

Info on this game is slightly skewed, but the victors write the history.

I thought this game contains all of the elements that makes Dip played remotely bad. No need to rehash the past; but stupid variant, I won't play it again, not that I was really playing it for the last month,

Michael

It's 2am and I can't sleep so I might as well get this sent out now and try in vain to get some sleep before the morning, so here we go.

I started off the game thinking it would end in a draw of some sort, due to the relatively large number of starting units, and the ability of these units to defend positions in depth.  I was proven wrong due to the inability of people (myself and Nick excluded) to understand the objective of the game.

For those of you who don't know, the objective of the game is to get a simple majority of supply centers.  As such, the objective of every player should be to attempt to secure these centers, and correspondingly, to stop people who are very clearly in position to solo from getting these centers.  I assumed, of course, that anyone who is dedicated to the game of diplomacy enough to play it over email over a span of several months would have this elementary understanding of how the game works down pat.

That said, Michael, I'd really appreciate your help soloing in DC 225.  I'm England in that game, and I'm reasonably close to soloing.  I figure since you helped England solo in this game that for the sake of consistency, you ought to help me solo in that game.  I'll even let you survive, because I don't need all of your centers to solo.  I'll be expecting to be supported into Munich in the fall, thanks in advance.

Nick summed up the gameplay rather accurately, except the refusal on my part to ally with him.  What he proposed was that I yield two of my remaining supply centers to him.  This was when he was around 22 or 23 centers, and I didn't really want him to solo, so I opted not to.  Little did I know that Germany and Turkey would fall all over themselves to help him solo.

To close, I'd like to thank Andy for running this game, and for running other games on this site as well.  You do good work, and I enjoy the variants that you are willing to run.  I'd also like to thank Jeff, Matthew, and Ilyas for taking over as replacement players as they, and others like them, allow games to run relatively smoothly when players opt out of the game.

[quote:4f3ff3a4a7] Hi all,

It is a pleasure to come out victorious of this bloody conflict. I want to say a few words to explain my vision of the game and perhaps explain my actions to some.
When the game started, I made a protection pact with Russia and tried to gain an alliance with France or Germany. The result was that I ended up the odd man out of the Franco-German alliance. France and I agreed as gentlemen to declare a war on each other the old fashion way... no backstabs. I then manoeuvred to obtain the support of Germany and Italy. Within about two turns France was only a shadow of its former self. He made peace with me and swore fealty in exchange for my protection. Meanwhile Germany and Russia had been waring, Austria was falling and Italy had attacked Turkey.
When Germany became too much of a threat I allied myself with Russia against him. At the same time Italy stroke Germany as well. As a result Germany lost much ground and appealed to find a protector. I responded and in much the same way France became my vassal, so did Germany. To protect my new vassal and use him as an advantage, we attacked Russia. I had also been talking Turkey into doing so which resulted in the fall of Russia rather quickly. But before Russia fell, Germany and Turkey betrayed me. Of course Italy was also facing Germany and Turkey but was not willing to ally with me a third time as I was always the one to rip the rewards. By that time however I had the strength to face my enemies alone.
Shortly before the end Turkey negotiated with me. Turkey was willing to kneel if I assured him that I would destroy Italy before my solo.
As a result only two players survived the game after my solo, Turkey and Germany.

I want to thank all of you for making the game so pleasant. It truely was a game of diplomacy.
I hope to play with you soon again.

Cheers,

Nick

Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your orders in well in advance of the deadline. Sorry this is coming out so late - I let my mind slip today.
According to the DipWiki, the solo victory criteria for this variant is 29 SCs, which England has not only achieved, but surpassed this year. Although RealPolitik doesn't seem to recognize this, I am going with the rules laid out for the variant, and calling this game and England solo.
Congratulations to Nick Cherrier for the win, and thank you all for playing. I'd especially like to thank Matt Kelly, Jeffrey Clay, and Ilyas Erzik for stepping in as replacements when we needed them so badly. Of course, Nick, Michael Stroz, and Mark Utterbach also deserve accolades for sticking with this game from beginning to end - thank you for staying true to the goals of the game and the community, gentlemen.
End of Game (EOG) statements would be appreciated, but I won't harass anyone who doesn't wish to provide one. I look forward to seeing you all in future games, whether I GM for you, you GM for me, or we face off across a board. Thanks again, everyone.

DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication (dc227) zeclient Jul 29, 12:13 am
Hi all,

DC-227 Fall 1922 Adjudication (dc227) MDemagogue Jul 29, 02:04 am

Michael

Folks,
All orders are in, and it's quite an exciting turn. Germany loses ground at sea; Italy loses ground at home; French sailors, anchored in the Gulf of Lyons for so long without orders, are finally given some shore leave - the permanent kind; the rest of the map looks like a busy highway at rush hour.

DC-227 Fall 1921 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 13, 2009, 11:12 pm)
Folks,
Sorry this is out so late in the evening, it's been a busy day away from the house.
Despite Civil Disorder in Lisbon, the French exile government in Portugal (or what's left of it) remains in power, and the last French fleet sits at anchor in the Gulf of Lyons, unmolested by its neighbors. Meanwhile, further east, Italy loses more ground to its large, aggressive neighbors, losing two fleets this season alone.
Turkey seems to be friendly with both Germany and England, while the latter two duke it out on their own. Quite an interesting "love triangle," with only lonely Italy left swinging in the breeze. A special thanks to Mark for sticking with us while he gets beat up. ;o)

DC-227 France in CD - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 10, 2009, 1:46 pm)
Folks,
I have decided to abide by my own rules and place France in Civil Disorder. I finally heard from Drew, but it's well past the deadline I gave him. Real life has gotten a bit crowded for him, and he is struggling to meet his game commitments. As such, we will not have a French ruler any longer - the unit will hold until dislodged or disbanded due to Portugal's capture. Deadline remains Monday, three days from now.

DC-227 Spring 1921 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 07, 2009, 9:10 pm)
Folks,
I received several emails from you guys asking why I was allowing so much extra time for delinquent orders. I had no really good answer, beyond excuses, so I gave Drew until this afternoon to get his orders in. Unfortunately, he failed to do so, and I've NMRed him.
Drew, you need to let me know within 24 hours if you're interested in sticking with us.
If I don't hear from Drew, France will be placed in Civil Disorder until Portugal is captured. This will save us the time of trying to find a replacement for a one-center power. I'll let you all know what's what by about this time tomorrow.

Looks like I'm able to leach internet from my in-laws until I get wired at my own place. I'll be moving in about a week from now, and hopefully I'll have my own connection a few days after that.

Subject: Andy/White Wolf Moving

Folks,
I'm finally getting on the road in about 8 hours. I hope to be offline only for the weekend, but I'll send a status update once I get to Baltimore. Wish me luck! ;o)

Andy/White Wolf Moving (dc227) TheWhiteWolf Jul 01, 08:27 pm
Hey folks,
Looks like I'm able to leach internet from my in-laws until I get wired at my own place. I'll be moving in about a week from now, and hopefully I'll have my own connection a few days after that.
For now, I'll try to keep things simple while still fulfilling all my obligations. Game on!

Folks,
I hope nobody gets this more than once, but I wanted to hit everyone who needed to know. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I will not be leaving town until this weekend (at the earliest.) I'll have no problem meeting any current deadlines or running turns for deadlines I've already set, so I don't see any major problems. I'll update you all as I learn more details.

Germany, sadly, receives his first NMR this season. Michael, these things happen to everybody, but I still need to hear from you within 24 hours so I know you're still with us.

DC-227 Spring 1920 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Jun 16, 2009, 3:37 pm)
Folks,
All three end-game proposals have failed. Amazingly, both solo proposals had more yes votes than the two-way draw. Interesting to see. No new proposals have been tabled this turn, so you only need to worry about orders this time around.
England gains ground this turn, but not as much as he had hoped. Turkey gains a better position against Italy, as Germany shores up their lines against the sultan. England managed to dislodge two enemy units, but neither had a valid retreat, so we'll be moving straight into fall.
I'll be moving beginning on the 23rd (next Tuesday,) but I'll probably only be completely offline for two to three days. Even if I can't get internet set up at my new place right away, I'll be able to borrow a family member's connection. I've set the fall deadline for Monday - please don't be late. I intend to get the fall turn out before my move, and winter (or autumn, if there are retreats) just after I get where I'm going.

Folks,
I have yet to receive a couple votes and one set of adjustments. Normally I would NMR the offender and call the vote a failure, but I realize it may have been unfair to set the deadline on a weekend. I am resetting the winter deadline to Monday, 8 June at 2pm CDT (7pm GMT.) I'll send reminders to the people I need votes/adjustments from.
