dc251 - final! - Cartesian   (Jun 28, 2009, 9:11 am)
Thanks to all for an enjoyable game. I had a lot of fun with it, particularly with the unusual feeling of freedom that came from having Frank as a loyal (so far) ally. Gene was trying to talk me into all sorts and was very persuasive and I wonder how much longer Frank would have lasted in alliance with me. Certainly he had Italy for free, but I had high hopes of an alliance with a weakened Germany (ably commanded by Rick) to clean up Russia first then to consider where the big threat was!

Thanks to all and thanks to Simon for running it so ably, despite being dogged by MI6 wiretappers.

Thanks Mike.

Everyone thank you for a game that was a lot of fun (aside from the technical NMRs).
I had a great time exchanging thoughts and plans with many of you, in particular John (England) and Rick (Germany) and at a more recent stage with Bruce (Austria).
France had been real lucky that from an early stage it had been able to keep neutrality with both England and France. That stability in the north and northeast helped France focus on the south. Even more fortunate was the downfall of the Italian empire when its ruler fled and the whole country went into CD. With Austria fighting for survival against Germany, Turkey and Russia, Italy was practically mine.

I think the game had a lot of potential for England, Germany, Russia, and of course France. Sorry Matthew, I don't think that Turkey would have lasted much longer. It would have been great to see what would have happened between those four powers once they had consumed all smaller ones. It's a pity we never got there.

I really hope I will meet you all again in another game. I'm going to move from the USA to NL so will keep a low profile for a few weeks but promise you I will be back after that.

Would love to hear your afterthoughts on the game.

Players of dc251,

Sometimes it just happens that games go awry.  In this case, this game was met w some technical challenges that led to an unusual circumstance – multiple players missing turns, due to no fault of their own.  I’ve asked everyone what they want to do w the game, and I’m happy that everyone spoke up on the matter.  Some voiced that they’d like to continue, others that they were pretty open, and some preferred just to let it lie.  So dc251 is officially called a 6-way draw.  All 6 players, to some degree, agreed this would be an acceptable (if not preferred) result.  I would like to thank you all for being flexible, and agreeing to an amenable ending.

For those who wanted to play on – may I suggest – a new re001 is already recruiting.  If you’d like a rematch, feel free to join it, even en’masse.  There is also the 17-player World game, and a fancy new 1648 variant already open.  Check them out, and enjoy.

Thank you all,
-mike

DC251 Shadowplay Spring 1905 - Slangers   (Jun 18, 2009, 3:28 am)
Dear all

Although I got this message from Matthew to both of my addresses, I did not get his orders. The game is hopelessly compromised and I no longer have any appetite for finding a solution.

Simon,

I don't like the game to end this way. I think the game deserves an proper finale to give credit to the players that enjoyed it and also for the efforts you have put in. I'm not just saying that because I'm in the lead, if that's what people might think.

There must be another way.
Can't we ask the Light Brigade to step in for players that no longer (want to) play?

Frank / France

OK, it’s bad news gentlemen.

The deadline has passed. I have received orders from just 2 players (France and Germany), but votes on the game end proposal from 3 ( 2 votes for a DIAS and 1 against). I am guessing that other players have voted with their feet, or their emails to both of my addresses have disappeared into the void (which I consider highly unlikely).

I have decided that this game is null and void. Clearly some strange technical issues have come into play and have hopelessly compromised the game. I deeply regret this as DC251 was shaping up nicely. Thanks for your time and interesting play. Sorry that it has had to end like this.

Best wishes

Simon

Best wishes
Simon

Dear all

Although I got this message from Matthew to both of my addresses, I did not get his orders. The game is hopelessly compromised and I no longer have any appetite for finding a solution.

All,

I sent in orders on June 14. I've been on the road, so I couldn't check for acknowledgement.

Gene, I take your point about extending the deadline and sending out an email to see if you were still OK. However, if I had done that, your reply would not have got to me either, so all that we'd have seen is a one week delay, followed by your NMR.

It has been suggested by another player that NMR does in fact mean No Move "Received". This means the onus is on you as players to make sure I have received them, and not on me to chase around to see if you have sent them.

DC251 Shadowplay, Winter 1904 adjudication - Alcore   (Jun 12, 2009, 8:46 am)
I accept the fault of not having dug up your alternate email address
sooner.

I suggest that you treat failure to recieve orders for a power as
grounds for extending the deadline one week, and send out a "are you
still alive email" specifically to missing powers.

I don't know what the fundamental issue is, but It's game changing.
Which is a shame.

I vote in favor of both game end proposals. If both win, I prefer the
all-way draw.

AAAAAAAARGH!
Problems:
It seems that we have some major problems here. It is claimed by
certainly Russia, and maybe Germany, that for some reason my email
account (Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk
<mailto:Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk> ) has taken a dislike to
some of you and is not letting orders through. This is obviously a
disaster, but I cannot see any reason for this to happen:
1) None of your messages are in my Junk e mail folder. This is
where most material that our system rejects ends up and I have checked
through it all very carefully.
2) All of the players in this game are on my Safe Senders list.
3) I have checked that none of you are on my blocked senders list.
4) I have previously received orders from you all using this
account, without any problems.

So, as you can see, this is a mystery that is beyond my IT skills to
solve. From my perspective, I can only process the orders that I
receive. If I see nothing then I must assume that nothing has been sent.
I'm just a humble GM trying to do a good job, but can only work within
my technological limits.

Whilst I appreciate that this causes major inconvenience to players who
have been affected, I would point out that I contacted everyone quite a
long time ago to give an alternative email address (
Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk <mailto:Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk> ). I
would recommend that you all send your orders to both of my addresses to
make sure that they get through. I always acknowledge orders as they
come in, so if you send orders and hear nothing from me, then it means
there is a problem and you need to chase them up.
Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk <mailto:Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk> has
no spam filters so everything should get through, but queries can always
be posted on the message board.

Solution:
There is nothing I can do to reinstate any Fall 1904 orders that may
have gone astray. The game has moved on since then and neither of the
players who NMRd at that time took steps to indicate that there was a
problem at the time of that adjudication, which was some time ago now.
It would be relatively straightforward to have done so, either through
the DC message board, through another player or through Steve or Former
Trout. So, the Fall 04 adjudication stands.

However, I will make an amendment to the Winter 1904 adjudication and
allow Russia to build his Army StP. I will send out the amended maps
with this email. This seems to be the fairest thing I can do, and I hope
that you're all happy with this.

Game End Proposals:
We have two game end proposals for you to vote on. Please send your vote
with your next set of orders. Remember, for a proposal to be carried, it
must be an unanimous decision. If you abstain it will be treated as a
"no" vote. The proposals are:

1. Draw including all survivors
2. 2 way victory for France and England.

Sorry for all of the troubles. I really do not have a clue what is going
on here and am desperately disappointed that whatever it is has impacted
on your enjoyment of the game. New maps are attached. Deadline is next
week as advertised.

DC251 Shadowplay, Winter 1904 adjudication (dc251) Slangers Jun 12, 02:51 am
AAAAAAAARGH!
Problems:
It seems that we have some major problems here. It is claimed by certainly Russia, and maybe Germany, that for some reason my email account (Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk (Simon.Langley-Evans(at)Nottingham.ac.uk)) has taken a dislike to some of you and is not letting orders through. This is obviously a disaster, but I cannot see any reason for this to happen:
<![if !supportLists]>1) <![endif]>None of your messages are in my Junk e mail folder. This is where most material that our system rejects ends up and I have checked through it all very carefully.
<![if !supportLists]>2) <![endif]>All of the players in this game are on my Safe Senders list.
<![if !supportLists]>3) <![endif]>I have checked that none of you are on my blocked senders list.
<![if !supportLists]>4) <![endif]>I have previously received orders from you all using this account, without any problems.

So, as you can see, this is a mystery that is beyond my IT skills to solve. From my perspective, I can only process the orders that I receive. If I see nothing then I must assume that nothing has been sent. I’m just a humble GM trying to do a good job, but can only work within my technological limits.

Whilst I appreciate that this causes major inconvenience to players who have been affected, I would point out that I contacted everyone quite a long time ago to give an alternative email address (Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk (Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk)). I would recommend that you all send your orders to both of my addresses to make sure that they get through. I always acknowledge orders as they come in, so if you send orders and hear nothing from me, then it means there is a problem and you need to chase them up. Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk (Simon_Langley-Evans(at)o2.co.uk) has no spam filters so everything should get through, but queries can always be posted on the message board.

Solution:
There is nothing I can do to reinstate any Fall 1904 orders that may have gone astray. The game has moved on since then and neither of the players who NMRd at that time took steps to indicate that there was a problem at the time of that adjudication, which was some time ago now. It would be relatively straightforward to have done so, either through the DC message board, through another player or through Steve or Former Trout. So, the Fall 04 adjudication stands.

However, I will make an amendment to the Winter 1904 adjudication and allow Russia to build his Army StP. I will send out the amended maps with this email. This seems to be the fairest thing I can do, and I hope that you’re all happy with this.

Game End Proposals:
We have two game end proposals for you to vote on. Please send your vote with your next set of orders. Remember, for a proposal to be carried, it must be an unanimous decision. If you abstain it will be treated as a “no” vote. The proposals are:

<![if !supportLists]>1. <![endif]>Draw including all survivors
<![if !supportLists]>2. <![endif]>2 way victory for France and England.

Sorry for all of the troubles. I really do not have a clue what is going on here and am desperately disappointed that whatever it is has impacted on your enjoyment of the game. New maps are attached. Deadline is next week as advertised.

Fall 1904. In which there are two shock NMRs. Good news for the stout defenders of Austria and the English expeditionary forces in Scandinavia. Meanwhile, France quietly annexes Italy and the Turkish forces hurl themselves fruitlessly against the shores of Greece.

Fall 1903. In which all hell’s let loose in the Balkans. Another Bulgarian expeditionary force is annihilated. Austria Hungary is left with more problems than the man with the most problems in the whole of problem land, as Germany, Russia and Turkey all take up arms against him. GM: Sadly we have not had orders from Stephen for a second successive season. This means that Stephen is out of the game and Italy falls into civil disorder. Italian units will stand unordered for the rest of the game and will be disbanded if dislodged. If Italian adjustments are necessary I will disband them on a furthest from home, fleets first basis.

The next deadline (Fall 1903) will be 10 pm GMT, Wednesday 20th May 2009.
Best wishes
Simon
