DC319: Winter 1941 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Aug 02, 2010, 7:42 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

World War 2 (or at least the continental prelude) has been in a bit of a
phoney war funk of late. Well, time to again sharpen your swords, polish your
rifles and rev up your spitfires! 1942 was a big year in history. Lets see how
it shapes in this alternate timeline!

I've scheduled the Spring 1942 Moves now for Monday, 9 August.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Game Status - charlesf   (Jul 29, 2010, 10:49 am)
Hi guys,

please apologise the longer absence of your GM. I'm
still in Greece as we extended our stay here both in order to avoid the strike
waves here in Greece impeding our travel home and also since we wanted to extend
our stay here anyway. Given changed plans, being on a yacht or in countryside
unfortunately meant "no internet" and hence only now I'm able to catch up on
Diplo-matters, being back in the capital. In hindsight, I ought to have not
attempted to schedule a deadline during my holiday. Live and learn. In any case,
I'm flying back home tomorrow morning.

As my inbox filled up, I may have missed a set of
orders. I'll shortly confirm all orders I've received. Should you not receive a
confirmation of your latest orders shortly, please resend. On account of this
issue, I'm rescheduling the coming winter deadline for Monday, 6PM.

Greetings from Athens,

Charles

DC319: France absent - jlqueiros   (Jul 26, 2010, 3:56 am)
Hi guys,

I see the retreats have not yet been adjudicated, which might imply our GM is still trying to solve his mailbox problem. I'll be absent until July 28th in a town where the most modern tecnology seems to be having donkeys carrying our luggage, which means I won't have net access. I'm not able to send prelims before knowing all the retreats. I hope therefore that the Spring deadline can be postponed for a few days.

Best,

João (France)

DC319: GM unreachable - TJKnauss   (Jul 22, 2010, 1:28 pm)
Hi everyone,

As Jimmy has experienced, I have had this result for every message I have sent since July 17.  As a service to the game, you can cc: all of your messages to me, and I will hold them for our game-meister until his return.     No, no, really, it is no trouble, I have plenty of available space.  And I won't even peek. Wink

                           Sincerely, Kyle

DC319: Fall 1941 Moves (CORRECTED) - charlesf   (Jul 15, 2010, 4:39 pm)
I'm afraid I misadjucated the Fall season in
respect to Italy's orders. Mea culpa. I've corrected the below as necessary.
Hopefully now everything is in order.

There's also a piece of observer press that has
come in since and you shall find it below. I shall heed that call
myself.

---

Hallo zusammen,

historically, 1941 was all about sweeping manoeuvre warfare. Less so in our
alternate history, as SCs have remained in the same players' hands. Perhaps
quiet before the storm...?

I'm afraid I remain pinched for time in these weeks. Fortunately I have a
ten-day holiday in Greece coming up and shall be leaving early tomorrow.

The Winter 1941 Retreats/Adjustments are
scheduled for Wednesday, 22 July, since I'm scheduling the Spring '42
Moves for the 28th owing to my travels. Not sure when I shall be able to
adjucate the winter orders. Possibly tonight, if orders are swift in coming
without any provisos, possibly at a later date.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Spring 1941 Moves - charlesf   (Jul 08, 2010, 4:57 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

afraid I couldn't muster the energy following yesterday's game to adjucate,
so it had to wait until tonight. Not that I'm too disheartened, there's always
Poland/Ukraine 2012 and Brazil 2014 to look forward to! Just now gotta slowly
adapt to WC withdrawal symptome come Sunday. Decided that reading about the
beautiful game's the best antidote and I shall be taking my copy of "The Ball is
Round: A Global History of Football" down to Greece (I shall be down there 16-26
July) as part of my holiday reading. I recommend it!

As for the events this spring, there's an uncanny quiet in the East, while
things are more on the move elsewhere.

The Fall 1941 Moves are scheduled
for Wednesday, 14 July.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Open communique from the British government:

The new British Prime
Minister regrets to inform the German-Polish joint command that he must
regretfully decline their offer of alliance. While the situation in the north
could have remained stable, a struggle between Italy and the Royal Navy in the
Mediterranean would have resulted in an open door for the Sultan, something that
the incoming Prime Minister was not prepared to risk at this time. The British
government understands and regrets that this move means open war. However,
Downing St and Whitehall remain focused on an eventual stable European situation
and peace is something that we will work hard to obtain, even while our guns

DC319: Our new Prime Minister! - charlesf   (Jun 25, 2010, 1:08 pm)
Hi guys,

David Gould has declared his readiness to take over
the burdens of governing the United Kingdom. The king has appointed him with
immediate effect.

David's also playing Italy in the 1936 game Dirk's
running.

To allow for sufficient time to negotiate, I'm
setting the deadline for next Wednesday, 30 June. You'll find David's mail
adress further below.

I'm now also giving everyone a clean slate in terms
of grace periods (i.e. two 6 hour grace periods) as a new player has
joined.

Have a nice weekend. And lets have those Three
Lions weep bitter tears! Smile

Charles
Hallo zusammen,

let me note again that I enter illegal orders as simple hold orders, as
has occurred this season. I recommend testing whether your orders are all
legal by entering them into the Realpolitik module, for I don't always get
round to looking things over. I've been away in Weimar and hence both didn't
round to doing so and had some work to do first upon my return before getting
to the adjucation. I hope the delay hasn't overly taxed your patience.

Now what happened this season? For starters, Switzerland once again
changed hands - and a similar fate befell Egypt. The French may have been
kicked out of Scotland, but they've now made themselves comfortable in the
British capital, hardly welcome news to a Prime Minister who's now received
similarly bad news from the Low Countries and the North Sea. Shall
England have to brace herself for another 1066 or triumph as in
1588?

In other news, we now also say farewell to the last independent minor
power. Morocco (historically divided into a French and Spanish protectorate,
plus an international zone - in my game lumped together as one minor power)
finally succumbs fully to foreign influence.

The Winter 1940 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET on Wednesday, 23
June. Now, gotta root for the South Africans! Trash that
trainwreck Tricolore team! Spank those spoilt superstars! Bafana
Bafana, make your nation proud!

Liebe Grüsse,

DC319: Game Status - charlesf   (Jun 24, 2010, 12:51 pm)
Hi guys,

as Michael failed to submit orders on time and he
had previously used up his alloted grace period allowance, I'm now seeing a
replacement for Britain according to my house rules. Should any observer wish to
champion Britain's cause, please let me know.

Should I not be able to recruit a replacement
within a reasonable time-span, I'll apply the civil disorder rules to Britain.
But that's very much Plan B.

Hi guys,

please apologise the longer absence of your GM. I'm
still in Greece as we extended our stay here both in order to avoid the strike
waves here in Greece impeding our travel home and also since we wanted to extend
our stay here anyway.

DC319: Fall 1940 Moves - dknemeyer   (Jun 22, 2010, 11:00 am)
Hi Jimmy,
I'm not sure if Charles will reveal it or not but the mistake was
mine: I misordered in the eastern Med which resulted in all three of
my units holding. In fact they all had orders that were intended for
me to be in LIB as Wesaq and I agreed. The error was because I forgot
Egypt has multiple coasts and ordered it in the context of LIB which
is illegal. Could have been worse; at least it was not a misorder that
wildly attacked anybody!

DC319: Spring 1940 Moves - charlesf   (Jun 14, 2010, 1:29 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

shall we see "Peace in our Time"? Perhaps, but certainly not just yet as
the draw proposal failed to pass muster. So Europe's attention shall have to
remain divided between the diplomatic arena and the football pitch. Now that we
Germans have punished the Aussies for giving us Foster beer and Kylie Minogue, I
suppose we'll have to next teach the Serbs a lesson for starting WW1
and whacky Playmobil-esque Eurovision hairstyles! :p

Germany plainly doesn't seem to be satisfied to successes being confined to
on-pitch action as the Wehrmacht has invaded the Netherlands, Norway and
Switzerland, though simultaneously also relinquishing de facto control over
Sweden.

Off the pitch, the Spaniards have now dealt the Egyptians some punishment
and Morocco now happens to be the last lonely nation on the independent minor
power list.

Something must be also happening in Paris. For five different nations now
surround the French capital. Perhaps it's because the last World Cup before WW2
was hosted by France (see poster below) and everyone's flocking to see the
games... Something terribly wrong happened though, as the Italians won...
Anyway, the press section is exclusively devoted to the beautiful game. Smile

The Fall 1940 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET on Monday, 21
June. So please send my your prelims no later than Saturday. But prior to
that, we've got some pending retreats which are due in two
days.

DC319: Winter 1939 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Jun 09, 2010, 8:09 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid I managed to mislabel the past season's adjucation. Apparently
nobody noticed though - or at least didn't point out that goof-up of mine.
Clearly my brain had already moved on to retreats/adjustments in the fall.
:p

Of course, now you're getting the real deal!

Apparently it's a rather good time to be a navy contractor. For three grand
new battleships were baptised with great fanfare, while army generals seem to
have had less success clamouring for more war matériel. Quite a different
picture from say Winter 1936, when a mere 9% of new armaments investment went
into naval buildup (one fleet, ten armies). Nowadays the admirals have their
hands on 60% of naval expenditure, obviously with a mind to catching up with the
terrestrial services armaments head-start... I wonder how it's being financed...
In Germany, prior to WW1 a tax on champagne was introduced to help finance
Tirpitz's naval armaments programme. Yep, drinking sparkling wine was a most
patriotic endeavour back then.

We now also have our first draw proposal on the table:

- a British-German-Italian-Polish-Turkish five-way draw

The deadline for voting on it will coincide with the coming spring
deadline.

As I trust some of you know, there's now also a second 1936 game afoot
(DC330). Dirk's trying his hand at GMing and yours truly has entered the fray
championing the Fatherland. Hooray, I actually get to play one of my variants!
Smile If you want to observe the game, I suggest you drop our Duce a
note.

Anyway, I've taken the liberty of adding DC330's players to the observer
list of this game. Guys, let me know if you don't want to see what these DC319
blokes are up to!

The Spring 1940 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET on Monday, 14
June. So please send my your prelims no later than
Saturday.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Fall 1939 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Jun 07, 2010, 7:55 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

we've now reached the starting date of WW2. And probably the story of this
season's Turkey being pushed back both in the Balkans and in the Mediterranean.
Spain has brought the entire Iberian peninsula under her dominion, a feat not
replicated since the personal union of 1580-1640 (if I'm getting my dates
right). In Northern waters events had more of a muted quality to them -
other than the French securing much of Scotland. Shades of the Jacobite
Rebellion of 1745 here...?

The Winter 1939 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 9 June.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Spring 1939 Moves - charlesf   (May 31, 2010, 6:37 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid both Michael and Jimmy failed to meet
the regular deadline. This means that Michael has now used up both of his two
grace periods accorded to him for this game. Didn't get round to bugging players
about orders as on other occasions. Just try to remember: Saturdays we commonly
have our prelim deadline. Mondays our regular moves deadline. Wednesdays our
retreats and adjustments. We all don't any grief to befall this
game.

Now, what happened this season? In terms of conquests not all that much.
Britain descended on the port of Brest, while the Rzeczpospolita has extended
her influence into Norway. In the East, Turkey stalled both Polish and German
advances, though failed to achieve the same in regards to Italy.

BTW, have any of you guys watched the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend?
Well, I'm totally jazzed that Germany won with a classy act and that we'll
now be hosting the event after 28 years for the first time. Berlin 2011 is gonna
be about as big a party as the World Cup was here in 2006! Smile

The Fall 1939 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET
on Monday, 7 June. Prelims 48 hours in advance
please.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Winter 1938 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (May 26, 2010, 3:45 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid Michael just missed the deadline and
thus uses up one of his two six-hour grace periods. The only previous instance
of a player entering grace period territory was Nigs in Spring 1937, though -
now that both the USSR and Republican Spain have been eliminated - he won't be
needing any more grace periods anyway. In any case, please get your orders in on
time as I'd rather not fret about players missing deadlines.

While I devoted the fall's comment section to the
Republican cause, I've now chosen something suitably triumphalist for the
Nationalists to mark the occasion of Franco's junta being universally recognised
as Spain's government. In game terms this means of course that Spain's (yeah,
there's only one Spain now) 3 DPs may now be employed much as those of any other
great power since Franco's now joined the big league.

In regards to the adjucation it's perhaps worth
mentioning that Turkey could not make use of all her gained SCs due to merely
having three build-sites available. So the remaining two are effectively waived,
though I've chosen not to mark that in the orders section and won't do so either
whenever a similar case might occur.

Don't miss the colourful non-GM press further
below. Keep it coming, guys! Smile

FROM TURKEY:

New Government - New Turkey?

Last week we followed the forming of
the new Government by Celal Bayar. And Today the new president of Turkey İsmet
İnönü made a speech concerning the new direction for the Turkish Republic. The
biggest part of the address was concerned with the expansion of the Turkish
borders. Indeed the last movements were quite extraordinarily vast and
aggressive. This let to the rise of the questions about friendship with other
nations. To this the second president gave his answer: |Let the nations jealous
of our might be our enemies. We cannot trust somebody who tries to judge our
Army before our intent. We are better served with destroying, whose who try to
count our strength. We will let them appreciate our strength in the most direct
way possible. Let these, who stand in our way tremble with fear. These who are
our true friends will accept us the way we are." The Masses converged in Ankara
before the Çankaya Köşkü cheered and drowned out the more cautious voices, like
the concerns of Mehmet Vehib Kaçi: |I don't think that, even the latest gains,
Turkey can fight and win the war on all sides. İnönü is making enemies left and
right. This is no way to fight a war. We will probably loose badly. I'd say even
before next year the gains will be undone and the revolution will be brewing
across the Republic." For the moment the cheering still prevails, but should the
armies be defeated, than the mood will change abruptly and maybe the president
will regret his decisions.

DC319: Fall 1938 Moves - Realpolitik file - charlesf   (May 26, 2010, 6:51 am)
Hi Jimmy,

yeah, I hadn't saved it properly. Discovered that
when reloading myself, but not knowing whether any of you actually use it I
didn't bother to resend it. Glad to see it's being missed. Realpolitik really is
an invaluable tool in both testing out various scenarios and also gives you
order text output you can use for submitting your orders to me. Besides,
flipping through the game history is quite interesting.

Talking Realpolitik, Dirk's having trouble
installing the programme on his Mac. Any fellow Mac users out there who might
help him out? With Windows installation is very straightforward, so I'm
surprised the same doesn't seem to be the case with em Apples.

Hallo zusammen,

Spanish Republic, rest in peace! After three years of struggle, the
republic has succumbed to a united front of Latin fascists.

To mark this seminal event, I picked a child's drawing from the "They Still
Draw Pictures" collection. Perhaps you'll find it as interesting as I do: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/tsdp/frame.html

Of course, the unravelling of the socialist camp does not stop there. The
USSR, after a promising start, is equally history. Lenin must be turning in
his grave - and, in his Mexican exile, Trotsky probably feels vindicated in
his belief that "Socialism in One Country" was an unworkable approach... So
we have our first player elimination. Nigs, please do not forget to submit an
EOG for later publication.

Now, the socialists' camp has also taken another hit, if we count France as
being socialist on account of her Popular Front government. The French colonial
troops in Tripoli simply couldn't withstand the uninhibited shelling of their
positions by Anglo-Egyptian forces. Similarly, France's position in the Levant
has been overrun, spelling at least for now the end to the French overseas
empire. Yet at least in Metropolitan France the news is somewhat more positive
as the Armée de Terre managed to halt the German advance on the capital, while
Brest remained in French hands thanks to an Anglo-Spanish standoff there.

Matters in the Balkans have also been on the move. Hitherto proudly
independent Hungary and Croatia have finally bowed to outside pressure, the
Germans gaining the upper hand in the former, while the Turks conquered the
latter. Though Turkish Balkan conquests did not stop there as Atatürk managed to
oust the Poles from Rumania and seize those Ploesti oil fields...

Farther north, it's equally been a bad season for the lesser powers.
Belgium moved into Britain's sphere of influence, whereas German ambitions in
Sweden have finally been crowned with success. So, in total, the number of as
yet truly independent lesser powers has been halved in a matter of months.

The Winter 1938 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 26 May.

Frohe Pfingsten/Happy Pentecost!

POEM OF THE DAY:
Mass
At the end of the battle the fighter lay dead. A man came to
him
and said: 'Don't die! I love you too much!'
But the corpse, alas, went
on dying.

Two came to him and again said:
'Don't leave us! Take heart!

Come back to life!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then
twenty, a hundred, a thousand,
Five hundred thousand, came, crying:
'So
much love and yet so powerless against death!'
But the corpse, alas, went on
dying.

Millions surrounded him,
pleading together:
'Brother, don't
leave us!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then, all the men on
earth
stood round him. The corpse eyed them sadly,
overwhelmed. He got up
slowly,
embraced the first man, started to walk.

DC319: Fall 1938 Moves - charlesf   (May 24, 2010, 2:07 pm)

Charles

POEM OF THE DAY:
Mass
At the end of the battle the fighter lay dead. A man came to
him
and said: 'Don't die! I love you too much!'
But the corpse, alas, went
on dying.

Two came to him and again said:
'Don't leave us! Take heart!

Come back to life!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then
twenty, a hundred, a thousand,
Five hundred thousand, came, crying:
'So
much love and yet so powerless against death!'
But the corpse, alas, went on
dying.

Millions surrounded him,
pleading together:
'Brother, don't
leave us!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then, all the men on
earth
stood round him. The corpse eyed them sadly,
overwhelmed. He got up
slowly,
embraced the first man, started to walk…

Hi guys,

I'm afraid my attention slipped when I listed the
next deadline (i.e. Fall 1938 Moves). Thanks, Michael, for catching those
goof-ups of mine. Obviously, Monday's the 24th. And that's our deadline in
keeping with the current Monday/Wednesday pattern we've got
underway.

So, please get your prelims in by Saturday 6 PM
CET, if you haven't already done so. No watching of the Bayern vs.
Inter showdown permitted before submitting any prelims! Smile

Have a great weekend!
