DC319: Fall 1937 Moves - charlesf   (May 10, 2010, 6:10 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

if you thought the manoeuvres earlier this year
promised a revival of Republican fortunes, think again. The Nationalists were
able to march into the Spanish capital unopposed as the Republicans had left to
cover their Valencia base - without their own provisional capital falling into
foreign hands as the Western powers inconclusively fought over those spoils. But
Franco's exploits do not stop there as his Catalan Army made a timely move on
Marseille, thus dooming France's Southern army.

As for the lesser powers, only Iraq and the
southern provinces of Yugoslavia succumbed to foreign pressure this season,
whereas Hungary and Sweden were able to defy their greater neighbours. This
means that the minor power casualty list for 1937 features 5 victims. As
opposed to 8 in 1936 (not counting Madrid). Checking out the previous 1926
playtest, there were 13 fewer minor powers after the first year and another
three bit the bullet in the second year. So we're looking at a somewhat
slower decrease in minor powers.

I am glad that the Times of London remain filled with letters to the
editor. Smile

The Winter 1937 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 12 May.

Letter to the Times

Dear Times, I cannot fathom how could this influential newspaper publish
such blatant Soviet propaganda. I speak of the article in the last installment
of this paper by a certain Col J.T Hartley. The statements made in this article
are either blatant lies or merely perplexing without the right background. So
let me explain the current situation. The British Empire declined the proposed
treaty and decided to stay in full force. Under Article 9 of the Constantinople
Convention of the Suez Canal the Egyptian Government decided to intervene. They
asked for help and the Turkish fleet agreed in the good faith. The Suez was
liberated, but sadly Port Said was badly damaged in the ensuring conflict. All
the financial control of Suez Canal lies now in the hands of the Suez Canal
Authority. The increased commission will go to the repairs of the destructed
parts in Port Said. There are also plans to use the increased money flow to
widen the Canal up to 60 meters. The Suez Canal itself is now protected by a
token force of the Turkish soldiers, as agreed by the Turko-Egyptian Treaty of
1937. The Constantinople Convention of the Suez Canal as signed by all present
parties is still in force. The Canal is open to any vessel and will stay open
even in this troubled times.
Yours truly, Mehmet Vehib Kaçı.

move of my opponent." -Albert Kesselring

DC319: Spring 1937 Moves - charlesf   (May 03, 2010, 6:25 pm)

Hallo
zusammen,

it appears that a second Polish-Soviet War is afoot
since the Poles invaded the Ukraine whilst attacking the newly established
Latvian SSR despite having supported the Soviet claim to
that territory only last year! In light of the USSR's manifest willingness
to support Polish interests in Sweden, one can only imagine Uncle Joe's dismay
regarding this latest turn of events. Perhaps he shall even consider this part
of a wider capitalist conspiracy since Soviet-Turkish relations appear to have
equally broken down.

More promising news for the socialist camp hails from the Iberian
peninsula. As Franco's forces reach the Mediterranean shore following a thrust
into Catalonia, a Republican counter-offensive has netted the Popular Front
government Madrid. At the same time, the great powers may well have abandoned a
policy of non-intervention in the Spanish Civil War. The Regia Marina has
assumed stations off Valencia, while the Western powers look to possibly
influence events in Northern Spain.

Events in Africa have also taken a new turn as the Royal Navy has seized
Tripoli. As for the Reich, it has made strengthened its hand in South-East
European affairs. Add to all those developments the infringement of the Danish,
Dutch and Greek sovereignity and you have about as eventful a Spring '37 as one
might wish for.

Further below, you shall find the first non-GM press in this game! Smile While
the "Pic of the Day" images were previously chosen by yours truly, this time
over the Spanish Republicans have some revolutionary artwork on offer. I mean to
always have one period image attached to every adjucation, player submissions
taking precedence over mine.

On a less happy note, I'm afraid that Nigs' orders were late for this
season and he thus used up one of his two six-hour grace periods. Too bad that
the first safeguard of early prelims didn't avoid this matter, though I must say
you guys generally do a decent job in getting those preliminary orders
in.

Anyway, the Fall 1937
Moves prelims are due NLT 6PM CET on Saturday, 8 May, the final
deadline being presently planned for 10 May. Though I may possibly extend
the final deadline, should a player's travels not allow him to sufficient time
to negotiate. But for now, the deadline's set for the 10th.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Winter 1936 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Apr 28, 2010, 5:25 pm)

Hallo
zusammen,

Europe's statesmen for the most part appear to be
more interested in opening their pockets for new planes, tanks and artillery
pieces. Submarines, cruisers, battleships are currently second and third
priorities in the powers' rearmament plans. Almost as if they all agreed on
renewing the Washington Treaty of 1922 which limited naval
rearmament...

BTW, should you be interested in learning more
about the history of the times the game covers, let me recommend Richard Overy's
"The Road to War". It's a very readable one-volume history that devotes a
chapter to every power featured in the game (other than Turkey, which wasn't
really considered a great power, albeit a significant regional player). I
personally find my enjoyment of a given (war)game rises when knowing a little
more about the topic it covers. The relevant chapters of Paul Kennedy's seminal
"Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" also makes for a good companion read to the
game, since it appraises the strengths and weaknesses of the great powers
(albeit Poland, not universally recognised as a great power, and Turkey, not
recognised as a great power by anyone at the time) sadly are left out of that
account.

I'm currently rereading Roman Debecki's "The
Foreign Policy of Poland 1919-1939". Has its biases as the author himself
belonged to the Polish diplomatic corps at the time, but I find it most
interesting to consider Poland's very ambitious foreign policy schemes. Gives
rise to interesting what-ifs...

I'm musing how one might rate the respective
leaders of the time were they diplomacy players. Mussolini would probably get an
F in my book. I think it was Paul Kennedy who described him as a "strategic
liability of the first order". Kinda the erratic and inept sucker you'd probably
finish off quickly in a Diplomacy tournament.

Poland's Jozef Beck (actually only the foreign
minister, but he was wholly in charge of foreign affairs - quite unusual an
arrangement) strikes me as being little better. Kinda your "chainsaw player" who
manages to get on everyone's nerves. Greedy (see Munich Crisis) and myopic.
Universally disliked by Europe's statesmen - never a good mark in a Dipper! I
guess an E is in order.

Chamberlain... Arguably too maligned by the general
public. He tends to get a friendly treatment from present-day historians.
Appeasement really was the only course Britain could follow and he wasn't the
naive and cowardly sucker his detractor made him out to be. His basic strategy
was pretty sound, making concessions as he swiftened Britain's pace of
rearmament and rallied the nation and commonwealth. But on diplomatic tactics
and implementation... Not so great. D.

Daladier... He operated under severe contraints and
showed considerable resolve in harnessing French strength for war and got the
Brits to finally make a continental commitment. C.

Stalin... Hm, he played Roosevelt masterfully. But
he gravely miscalculated with the German-Soviet Pact, displaying a dictator's
characteristic avarice. Didn't see the biggest and most obvious stab in historiy
coming. C

Hitler... A reckless gambler. But achieved
diplomatic stunning successes in the 30s. Good at charming or bullying people,
as required in a given diplomatic situation. Too easy diplomatic victories made
him however overconfident and that contributed to him miscalculating the
situation in September 1939, leading to the general war yet didn't (just yet)
want. Certainly a man of considerable ability, but such a diplo-style probably
is going to "outstay its welcome". Kinda scorched earth mentality brought to the
diplomatic arena. C.

Atatürk... Not only a great military leader, but
was able to reconcile with his erstwhile Greek foes and extricate territorial
concessions from France. Was a greatly respected figure in the diplomatic arena,
always a big plus. Got what he wanted on the Straits Question. I'll give him an
A, cuz I gotta give the top grade to somebody. :p

Well, excuse my rambling... What do you think of
those very tentative ratings of those leaders' diplomatic skill?

Anyway, the Spring 1937 Moves prelims are
due NLT 6PM CET on Saturday, 1 May.

Let's see what the new year holds for us
all!

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Fall 1936 Moves - charlesf   (Apr 26, 2010, 12:21 pm)
Hallo zusammen,

in the protracted Battle for Madrid arms shipments through Portugal gave
the Caudillo's forces sufficient oomph to rout the poorly equipped
Republican militia defending the capital (the historical Battle for Madrid in
late 1936 arguably ought to be rated as a simple bounce). Following this
critical victory, many countries have chosen to recognise the Franco's
provisional government, much enhancing its diplomatic clout (i.e. garnering 2
DPs for 1937).

While the socialist camp has thus fared poorly in Spain, Stalin's apparent
focus on matters closer to home following his "socialism in one country" motto
does seem to be paying off. Both Latvia and Finland have been "invited" to
join the USSR, while the Shah has accorded the Red Army basing rights
in his realm. This establishes the Soviet Union as a regional player in the
Near East, while Kemal's Turkey has colluded with Egyptian anti-imperialists in
reclaiming the Suez Canal Zone. Considering how the British Empire has failed to
make gains elsewhere, it remains to be seen whether Downing Street's influence
in the region shall survive cuts to naval expenditure.

Similarly, the other long-established colonial power, France, has been
forced to cede French Algeria to a resurgent Italy. Yet at least closer to home
the Président can boast of some success in that a French counteroffensive in the
Maritime Alps has pushed the Franco-Italian frontline down into the Po Valley.
However, in the Low Countries France was no more successful than Britain in
getting a foot into the door.

Another flashpoint of greater power rivalry was Sweden. While Poles and
Soviets amicably agreed upon Latvia's fate, it appears the two powers weren't on
the same page when it came to Europe's leading exporter of iron ore. And it
looks like the Reichschancellor was mindful of maintaining Sweden's neutrality,
perhaps in view of securing future shipments of all that Swedish iron ore to
German industry.

And talking of the German Empire, Berlin has managed to exploit the
Sudetenland Crisis to good effect as the international community's attention is
squarely preoccupied with other matters. Prague's gold reserves shall surely
help swiften the pace of German rearmament.

A note regarding retreats and adjustments: Obviously any dislodged unit has
the option to disband. So I won't expressly point that out in adjucations.
Any builds or removals subject to whether or not a unit disbands rather than
retreats are marked with a question-mark.

A reminder: Since retreats and adjustments are adjucated together, orders
for both need to be jointly submitted. Adjustments may be made conditional on
any retreat orders. Say: "If X retreats to Y, build a fleet in Z. If not, waive
the build." I trust you get the idea...

I'm always rather curious at what rate minor powers are gobbled up by
larger fish in the pool. Eight have succumbed this year (plus the ungarrisoned
Madrid SC). That a whole lot less than in my earler 1926 playtest. 13 minor
powers bit the dust in the first year in that game. This very high rate was the
result of an IMO rather unusual degree of cooperation among the seven
players and to a lesser degree the on account of the 1926 map used for that
game making minor-power conquests in the Balkans easier. My view is
that 1936's minor powers have somewhat greater staying power as a whole than was
the case in that 1926 variant version.

The Winter 1936 Retreats/Adjustments are
due to me NLT 6PM CET on Wednesday, 28 April.

Thanks for being so mindful of CCing me on negotiations. It's been most
instructive to watch. I'm curious how things shall further develop!

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

DC319: Spring 1936 Moves - charlesf   (Apr 19, 2010, 11:31 am)

Hi guys,

I am particularly
fond of the very first season in any Diplomacy game as danger and opportunity
are held in balance. The future is wide-open! The first results may then prove a
promising start or something of a reality-check. In either case, hopefully
spurring players on to step up their game yet once more. After all, nobody's
fate is decided in either direction at this very early
juncture.

I'm afraid the earlier RP module contained a bug I now discovered. You'll
find the corrected files attached - as well as the dpy file showing the present
state of the game.

The Fall 1936 moves are due to me NLT 6PM CET
on Monday, 26 April. So get me those prelims
by Saturday, 24 April 6PM CET (GMT+1), at the
latest.

It's been fun and enlightening to observe all
the negotiations. I'm anxious to see what shall happen next.

Bonne chance!

DC319: Diplomacy Points, the Intermarum Confederat... - charlesf   (Apr 10, 2010, 7:41 am)
Hi guys,

let me take this opportunity to adress a couple of matters:

DIPLOMACY POINTS

First of all, note that any power may only spend at most two of its DPs on any one DP order! This limitation doesn't exist in the original Ambition & Empire rules and hence bears emphasising.

Of course, two players (Dirk and Nigel) control two powers respectively. So in theory, they could stack up to four DPs in any one country. Say Nigel could stack up two Soviet and two Republican DPs in one country.

Obviously there are two caveats here:

- The Spanish powers control merely one SC each during the first year and hence only get one DP each to allocate right now.

- Following limits on the use of Spanish DPs are in place until one side "wins the civil war", so to speak: "Until a faction controls either all three Spanish Home SCs or it is the sole surviving Spanish power, DPs may only be allocated to Portugal or to another minor power provided the submitted order either supports the Spanish faction under one’s control or supports an attack against the opposing civil war faction."

I'd say this prospect of being able to use Spanish DPs anywhere on the map (and combine the DPs from both controlled powers) presents a significant incentive for winning the civil war next to the more obvious advantages.

How ought DP orders be written:

- First of all, Dirk and Nigel will have to clearly designate which DP allocations are Italian/Soviet and which are Nationalist/Republican. Any ambiguity here will make those DP orders invalid.

- I'd like you to use the following format: "2:F Swe S F NRG-Nwy", i.e. 2 DPs allocated to Sweden in order to support a fleet from the Norwegian Sea to Norway. If you stick to that format, I'll just have to copy paste that into my speadsheet and it'll save me a some work. Smile

Another reminder: A Croatia and A Serbia both belong to the same minor power, Yugoslavia (hence the same flag icon and the thin borders between the two). Since self-dislodgement and support against one's own units is prohibited in Diplomacy, these two units obviously cannot do so. This ain't a game about the 1990s!

I cannot stress how important the effective use and coordination of DPs are in succeeding in this game! 22 of the 50 SC are initially occupied by minor power units. That's a lot of invaluable military potential you can tap into! Naturally, over time, the number of minor powers shall decrease, but - veterans of the 1926 playtest - don't count on the Balkans, for one, being carved up as quickly as was the case in that game. The Balkan theatre has been "Swiss-cheese-ified" and hence it ought to prove more difficult for the minor powers to conquer these minor powers. Rule of thumb: The fewer minor powers adjoin a minor power, the more difficult it may prove to take.

As regards to how one might use one's DPs, here some options:

a) To support one's own movements.
b) To support one's ally's movements
c) To support a minor power and hence deny their conquest to a rival
d) To have the minor power simply hold.

As previously mentioned, DP coordination with other powers may prove decisive. A rivalling power might match on its own your 2 DPs in any one country and cancel them out. But if you were to say get another power to allocate one of his DPs to the same order (say in exchange for the promise that you'll spend your 3rd DP to help him out in turn), then you'd be able to trump your rival and have that minor power execute the order you were hoping for.

Since DP allocation remains secret and merely the end-result is published, the trouble is that it's difficult or indeed impossible to ascertain whether someone actually keeps his DP allocation promises. I trust any Dipper sees what opportunities for mischief present themselves! :p

As the game progresses and the number of minor powers decrease, DP expenditure tends to become less parochial, less spread out and instead stacked quite high. DPs are your means of influencing and shaping the board far beyond your direct sphere of influence. Do not neglect this - especially considering how low the victory criterion happens to be! 15 out of 50 SCs means one player needs only 30% of all SCs to win (though note that the Spanish factions' SCs are halved when added to their patron powers' total). What does this mean for the players? Well, they need to be more alert to the shifting balance of power and tailor their foreign policy to this reality. DPs may prove a handy way in containing a power and manipulating the balance of power. I believe that more than perhaps any other variant, you'll have to "play the whole board" given the DP mechanics and low victory threshold. Ignore what happens at the other end of the board at your peril!

So, following the ole Diplomacy mantra ("Write early, write often, write everyone!"Wink only becomes yet more important in a DP variant and one with such a low victory criterion to boot. Time and again, I've seen powers who invest more thought and energy into the "DP game", swaying minor powers more successfully to their side than their more complacent rivals. Don't get caught napping!

THE INTERMARUM CONFEDERATION

I was asked by one player why I accorded Poland building rights in Latvia, Lithuania and Rumania. The historical justification here are the many schemes for a confederation of East-Central European states under Poland's leadership back in the interwar period. Let me cite a brief summary from wikipedia:

Międzymorze (also known in English as Intermarum) was a plan, pursued after World War I by Józef Piłsudski, for a federation, under Poland's aegis of Central and Eastern European countries. Invited to join the proposed federation were the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia), Finland, Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. The Polish name Międzymorze, which means "Intersea" or "Between-seas," has been rendered into English, from the Latin, as "Intermarum" or "Intermarium." The proposed federation was meant to emulate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, that, from the end of the 16th century to the end of the 18th, had united the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Intermarum complemented Piłsudski's other geopolitical vision—Prometheism, whose goal was the dismemberment of the Russian Empire and that Empire's divestiture of its territorial conquests. Intermarum was, however, perceived by some Lithuanians as a threat to their newly established independence, and by some Ukrainians as a threat to their aspirations for independence; and was opposed by Russia and by most western powers, except France. Within two decades of the failure of Piłsudski's grand scheme, all the countries that he had viewed as candidates for membership in the Intermarum federation had fallen to the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany.

During the 19th and 20th centuries such projects for a state/confederation that encompassed a much wider territory than merely those predominantly inhabited by Poles were labelled as "Jagiellonian" (after the dynasty that united Poland and Lithuania in the 14th to 16th centuries). Opposing plans for Polish statehood that favoured a more ethnically homogeneous Polish state were considered "Piastic" (after the dynasty which created the Polish realm in the 11th century).

Pilsudski (btw, pronounced roughly "Pee-sudski"Wink was an adherent of such Jagiellonian concepts. Yet following WW1, Poles and Lithuanians clashed over Vilna and that permanently soured relations between those two countries and proved a hindrance to the realisation of such a vision. Ukrainians and Poles also barely got along much better - and once the Reds had defeated the Ukrainian nationalists, that key element in such confederation plans also fell by the way-side.

Though Pilsudski managed to gain a good chunk of Lithuanian, Byelorussian and Ukrainians lands thanks to winning the Polish-Soviet War, that fell well short of anything like a Jagiellonian confederation and those not ethnically Polish (Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Lithuanians, Jews, Germans etc.) suffered considerable discrimination under the Second Polish Republic. Not exactly a recipe for success, I must say, in a state in which Poles made up but 69% of the overall population. Add to that the fact that Poland managed to engage during the interwar period in armed conflicts with all her neighbours save Latvia and Rumania, and you get some inkling why Poland was diplomatically isolated and ill-positioned to fend off German-Soviet encroachment in 1939...

That being said, that outcome was by no means inevitable and this variant affords the Polish player the opportunity to avoid such a fate. Jozef Beck, Pilsudski's successor following his death in 1935, continued to pursue "Jagiellonian" projects similar those of Pilsudski. He championed the concept of a "Third Europe" (basically an alliance or confederation of all states between the German-Italian bloc and the Soviet Union), but had precious little to show for it. Even the one glimmer of success, the Polish-Rumanian Alliance, proved of little use in the 1939 campaign - other than allowing Poles to escape via Rumanian territory, that is.

Lithuania, Latvia and Rumania were among the key components of an "Intermarum Confederation", so that's why I gave Poland building rights in those states. From a purely mechanical perspective, I wanted Poland to have the ability to build fleets on the Black Sea. Fortunately, the historical rationale more than justifies this. Poland enjoying such extensive building rights presents one of the strengths of that position and hence one reason why I don't think Poland can be rated as an underdog comparable to Standard's Austria or - gasp - Italy.

Okay, enough in the way of a long-winded explanation! Smile

THE ATLANTIC

Much as the Atlantic's adjacencies are detailed in the variant rules, one player based in the 1926 variant his play on some false assumptions regarding that space. Lets not have that happen in this game! So let me remind you that the ATL space wraps all around Africa and borders Egypt(sc), Suez and the Arabain Sea on the Near-East side of things, whereas at the other end it borders the North-Western Approaches, Ireland, the South-Western Approaches etc.

This means that Suez/Egypt are put three moves away from the next British HSC, Edinburgh. So you might move F Edinburgh -> Ireland -> Atlantic Ocean -> Suez. Brest, France's closest HSC to the Near-East is equally but three moves away from Suez/Egypt. So don't overestimate the actual distance (in terms of moves) between the Western powers' home bases and the Near East! It's (by design) not really remote.

Okay, I've now more or less run out of things I wanted to say. :p Enjoy the game. And make as much as you can of early negotiations. In this game of musical chairs, those players who only engage late or sporadically in negotiations, are often the one's left standing. Everything's still in the cards during the opening season. Needless to say, I'm enjoying reading what negotations have taken place so far! Smile

Viel Erfolg!

Charles

In the interests of transparency, I've just finished a winter blitz game (DC291) where both Dirk and Nigel were players, and I've played with Dirk in Charles's first 1648 game on the DC site.

Hi guys,

welcome to the very first 1936 playtest! I hope we shall all have a whopping time and that this new variant shall meet your expectations. This variant has been long in the making. And it wouldn't ever have seen the light of the day had it not been for Baron Powell's and Jeff Kase's pioneering of the Diplomacy Points system (in their excellent Ambition & Empire variant). I hope those of you who haven't yet had any previous experience with this mechanism will find it as intriguing as I do.

While of course any type of meta-gaming is very much frowned upon and trust nobody shall engage in, I believe that in the interest of full disclosure of all present player pairings outside of this game ought to be made public. Checking the DC site, I came up with the following list:

TGP003 (1900 variant): Jimmy, Kyle. (Incidentally also the one game I myself happen to be playing in.)
DC279 (1648 variant): Dirk, Nigel (I'm the GM.)

Am I missing any such present pairings in other games?

Now, though you've all received my house rules (and I hope you've all read them carefully), I'd like to stress the following points:

- Preliminary Spring and Fall orders need to be submitted 48 hours in advance of the actual deadline. I believe this considerably diminishes the likelihood of NMRs and mistaken orders. So I've made this a requirement. These deadlines for preliminary orders shall be listed in brackets in an adjucations Deadline Schedule section.

- Note that deadlines shall generally be at 6 PM CET (GMT+1) rather than your local time.

- All negotiation mails need to be CCed to me. This is very helpful from a playtesting perspective, allows me to spot mistaken assumptions regarding the rules or map and allows me to keep stats on the game's mail volume. And hey, I just like being in the loop. Smile

- Make sure you use the order header format. It helps me sort through mail, so please stick to it (e.g. DC319 Sp36 P1). I also encourage the analogous use of the negotiation header format on the lines of "DC319 Su36 PGS", but it's by no means a requirement. Just a standard some might find as useful as I do.

- I've attached a zip-file containing the 1936 module for the Realpolitik adjucation software. Simply unzip it into the software's "variant files" sub-folder. Then, when opening the RP programme, you can select the 1936 variant from the drop-down variant menu. Using Realpolitik is child's play and may prove invaluable in experimenting with possible moves. You might also want to simply enter your orders (all done by simple clicking) in Realpolitik, open the orders window under RP's "Windows" menu and then simply copy-paste those orders listed there into your mail to me. That'd help you avoid orders mistakes.

- I shall be also including a dpy-file for Realpolitik in every adjucation. Should you open it with Realpolitik (and have previously installed the variant module), you'll see the present state of the game. You'll then be able to click through the game's history, toggle on space names, experiment with moves and see how they might be adjucated. GREAT POWER ALLOCATION

Okay, now on to the bit you've all been waiting for, I guess. Smile Taking into account all submitted power preferences, I worked out the following:
Michael Thompson Chester le Street, UK Britain Joao Queiros Nairobi, Kenya France Jimmy Ghostine Paris, France Germany Dirk Knemeyer Somerville, MA, US Italy Kyle Overby-Lee Inverness, IL, US Poland Nigel Phillips Leeds, UK Soviet Union Repu Maoni Leipzig, Germany Turkey

Two players chose not to rank any clear preference. The others all got their first choice, save for one player who had to make do with his second choice as Italy topped the preference list of two players (a die roll then determining who got Italy).

Adding up all the ranks accorded to the various powers (disregarding the lack of any preference by two players), you get the following:

France 13 Soviet Union 14 Britain 17 Italy 21 Germany 25 Turkey 25 Poland 31

Now, I don't take that as a vote on how strong the various powers are, but merely which you guys happened to fancy. Just for the sake of a comparison, let me list the power preferences in the past 1926 playtest (1936's sister variant, which is rather similar):

Poland 19 Soviet Union 20 Italy 23 Britain 26 France 26 Germany 28 Turkey 33

Actually, I would have thought Italy and the Soviet Uinon would prove wildly popular among players for the 1936 game (considering you get that Spanish civil war faction as well to play with). But clearly Britain and France are also in-fashion this spring season! Interesting how Poland topped the preferences for the 1926 playtest, but apparently didn't excite you guys too much. That just as an aside...

Anyway, I hope everyone is happy with his allocated power (since things worked out pretty well this time, I trust you are). Further below you'll find all players' email adresses. Incidentally, we also seem to have a nice trans-Atlantic mix here.

The Spring 1936 moves are due to me NLT 6PM CET on Monday, 19 April. So get me those prelims by Saturday, 17 April 6PM CET (GMT+1), at the latest. Please remember to CC me on all your diplomatic correspondence. Thanks!

Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Viel Erfolg auf dem diplomatischen Parkett!

DC319: Winter 1935 Game-Start - psychosis1973   (Apr 09, 2010, 12:10 pm)

Realpolitik rocks and I do highly recommend the software's use! You can download the programme at: http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

DC319: Winter 1935 Game-Start (dc319) Nigs Apr 09, 12:29 pm
For what it's worth looking at DC291 might give an insight into relations between the three of us which hopefully is not a precedent ( at least for the workers international, I hope not ; - )

cheers

Realpolitik rocks and I do highly recommend the software's use! You can download the programme at: http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/

- Since our game's DC319, our message board's email is dc319-at-diplomaticcorp.com. Please include that adress whenever sending out a public email. You may wish to subscribe to the DC319 forum on the DC message board.

- I welcome any press from players and observers. Submit it to me and I shall include it in the adjucation (anonymously or not, as specified). Press may be made conditional on any part of the adjucation, if so desired.

Charles
