(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1901 Results - Corrino   (May 03, 2010, 10:31 pm)
Players,

Well, I was just about to go to bed so I checked my Inbox one last time, and lo and behold, there was the last "Final" authorization.  So I propped up my eyelids and dove into it.  Please check carefully!

News of the Season:

> Our two eastern hot spots remain the same, but this time Austria is on the wrong side of both transactions, losing Trieste to Italy and Rumania to the Russo-Turkish team.  Did  he say team?  Yes, he did.

> In the west, A Burgundy, which went for Munich last time, changes course and goes for Belgium, only to find a German army already ensconced therein.

> Every country shows at least one unit except for England.  Where are those crafty Brits, anyway?  That's what this game is all
about, isn't it?

=========================================
Orders resolved:

Austria:
A Rumania Supports * (*Dislodged*)
F Trieste - Venice (*Dislodged*)

England:

France:
A Burgundy - Belgium (*Fails*)

Germany:
A Belgium Supports * (*Cut*)

Italy:
F Adriatic Sea Supports A Venice - Trieste
A Venice - Trieste

Russia:
A Sevastopol - Rumania

Turkey:
F Black Sea Supports A Sevastopol - Rumania

============================================

Retreats needed:

Austria
A Rumania
F Trieste

Retreats to be submitted within 24 hours please.  Retreats are reported to all countries which participated in the dislodgement.  Hence, A Rumania's retreat will be reported to Russia and Turkey.  F Trieste's retreat will be reported to Italy.

Reminder that Austria is NOT informed of the available spaces for retreat.  He must submit his orders blind.

============================================

Next
Phase:

After retreats have been posted, I will send out a new public report containing the SC counts for each nation.

I recommend that you wait until you receive this report before submitting your Winter/Spring orders, even if you know the Austria retreats do not affect you.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Reminder & Point of... - Corrino   (May 03, 2010, 7:06 am)
Hi Players,

Hope your week-end was good.  We topped 80 degrees F here in Boston yesterday and I spent it walking 20 miles for charity with my eldest daughter.  I nice yearly tradition for us.  The walk, not the warm temperatures.  Typically it rains.

Reminder that orders are due by 8 pm tomorrow night (Tues), but... you don't really need the reminder because all seven of you have already submitted orders.

Standard practice is that I will always allow changes to orders up to the deadline time.  However, if I were to receive seven sets of orders marked as "FINAL" -- and I had the time available, as I think I shall tonight -- then I would adjudicate early.

At this point in time I have one set marked as final.  If you're happy with the orders you've sent in and want to tell me they're final, go ahead.  Odds are I won't get six finals by tonight, but who knows?

In the future, you can either mark your orders as final every time OR if you like I will accept a standing order from you that any orders you submit may be considered final.  Given the gunboat nature of the game I think this latter option makes sense.

Regards,
Chris

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Spring 1901 Results - Corrino   (Apr 30, 2010, 7:35 pm)
Players -

It begins.

Rumors run from one end of the continent to the other.  Armies are on the march.  Fleets are putting out to sea.  From whence did they come, and to where are they going?

Open conflict has been confirmed in three scattered provinces this season:  Rumania, Trieste and Munich.

Three separate Austro-Hungarian units, believed to be the full complement of the Archduke's forces, are confirmed in their positions.  The other continental nations all have single armies revealed to the world, while of the two corner powers -- "witches" to some -- there is not a whisper to be heard.

========================================
Austria:
A Galicia - Rumania

A Budapest Supports A Galicia - Rumania
F Trieste Hold

England:

France:
A Burgundy - Munich (*Fails*)

Germany:
A Munich Hold

Italy:
A Venice - Trieste (*Fails*)

Russia:
A Sevastopol - Rumania (*Fails*)

Turkey:

=========================================

RETREATS:  None

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1901 is due Tuesday, May 4, 8 pm Eastern US time

GM's Notes:

Please check for errors, tricky as that may be.  Feel free to ask questions if you're unsure.

Do remember not to send any messages to the forum.  This is a gunboat game and your identities are supposed to remain secret.

When submitting orders, please open a new message each time, and include the game number, the season and your country name in the Subject line.
For example:  DC 324 - German orders Fall 1902

Cheers,
Chris

I have heard from the missing party.  Yes, he is traveling and missed the earlier messages.  He might be able to get orders in today, but more likely tomorrow (Friday).  So for now everybody can just relax and think about all the dastardly openings your neighbors have devised to screw with you.  Smile

Besides, it's Thursday.  Blitz Day.  I wish better luck to you than I'm having right now; stabbed by Russia and looking at minus 3 this year.  Ouch!

Chris

Hi Players,

I'm sorry to say it looks like we're not going to be able to start tonight.  I have only six sets of orders.  I have not heard from the seventh player since he turned in preferences yesterday morning.

It so happens that I have known this person for many years and I know him to be EXTREMELY reliable.  His DC record backs that up.  Therefore, I have to believe that he has just been away from his computer since yesterday or there has been some other kind of unavoidable glitch.  Since I didn't give any advance warning that I would be setting an early deadline, I don't think I can penalize him for not having them in tonight.  You'll recall that I originally emailed each of you and said that deadlines would be Tues/Fri.  I can't blame him if he proceeded on that assumption.

If I should get his orders within
the next hour, I will adjudicate tonight.  If not, it will be at least 24 hours until I can get them out.  As soon as I have them, I'll let everyone know and tell you when I'll be adjudicating.

Thanks to everyone who did hurry to get their orders in by tonight.  If you have had a change of heart, feel free to submit changes.

On a different note, I am really sorry I said anything about North Sea.  It appears I caused confusion instead of removing it.  The rules of Stab! are very simple:

NO COUNTRY OWNS ANY SEA SPACES.  YOU CANNOT START WITH A FLEET IN A SEA SPACE.  FLEETS CAN BE PLACED IN COASTAL SPACES ONLY.

Got it?  Great.

Chris

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Reminder & Answers t... - Corrino   (Apr 28, 2010, 6:44 am)
Players,

Reminder that our first deadline is in about 12 hours.  I have 5-1/2 sets of orders submitted.  I will adjudicate as quickly after the deadline as I can.  We have a short turn-around to Fall this year, so please consider ahead of time whether you have any possible retreats and be prepared to send them in promptly.  Thanks.

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying -- or is that agonizing over? -- the process of placing their first units.  I'd like to tell you that it gets easier after this turn, but that would be a lie.  Smile  Well, unit placement gets easier since it goes back to restricting you to your home SC, but the rest of the game gets harder.  Heh, heh, heh.

Some answers to questions asked about initial placement.

1.  Finland - Neutral.  I know it looks Russian on our RP maps, but common sense and a quick consult with my Stab! guru confirms that allowing a Russian unit to start in Finland is just too big an advantage.  Sorry, Tsar.

2.  Piedmont - Italian

3.  Tyrolia - Austrian

4.  North Sea - Neutral.  There are some games that let England start out here.  This isn't one of them.

Any more ambiguities?  Just ask me.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Game Start - Corrino   (Apr 27, 2010, 10:27 am)
I have received all the confirmations and preferences.  Thus... it begins!

The next message you receive will tell you your country assigment.  I was able to give out three top choices, two second choices, one third choice and one fourth choice.  Not too bad.

Deadline:

I had intended to have our first deadline next week on Tuesday, but it seems to me that we're all pretty eager to get started.  Perhaps we can get up and going right away?

I propose that our first year deadlines be slightly accelerated:

WINTER 1900/SPRING 1901:  Wednesday 4/28, 8 pm Eastern US time

SUMMER 1901 (if needed):  Thursday 4/29, 12 noon

FALL 1901:  Friday 4/30, 8 pm

If anyone has a problem with these let me know and I'll bump out the deadlines, but this is going to be the easiest season for you and me, so I think we can do it.

Good luck, and have fun!

Chris
