DC335; Russian EOG Statment - dipknight   (Oct 15, 2010, 7:30 pm)
At the beginning of this game, I was hoping for the usual; a Juggernaut with Turkey.  However, I have been burnt by Turkey before.  So, I ensured that I could not be burnt by arranging a stand-off in the Black Sea.  Communication with Austria was good and a DMZ was arranged for Galicia.  However, thinking that I had a good understanding with Turkey, Austria became the first logical target.  Therefore, I moved all possible units south to work with Turkey against Austria.  On the Northern side, I hoped for the best and made good faith overtures with both England and Germany hoping that I would be able to occupy Sweden; either with Germany's good will in the fall or with England's support the following spring.

I was shocked by the results of Spring 1901 when Turkey occupied Armenia.  Knowing that there was a stand-off in the Black Sea, it seemed odd for him to move into Armenia.  However, I was still hoping for the Juggernaut and Turkey explained that he was misled.  Ok, well enough; I assumed that he could see, with all of my units moving south, it would be pointless to continue his attack on Russia.  On the other hand, my occupation of Galicia and Italy's occupation of Tyrolia was similarly shocking to Austria. Communications with Austria indicated that he was desperate for a friend.  So, I was very frank with Austria; "To have any hope of gaining Russia's friendship, Austria would have to vacate Rumania or risk losing Budapest.  Budapest was as risk since Russia could move Galicia to Budapest and Ukraine to Rumania."  Of course, by attacking both Budapest and Rumania, Austria could easily protect both simply by ordering Rumania to Budapest.  So, I moved Galicia to Rumania and hoped that Austria would either take my offer or move to protect Budapest.  I informed Italy that I would not attack Vienna to ensure that Italy would have the opportunity to do so.  Whether Russia gained Rumania or Italy gained Vienna; Austria would not have a build for 1901.

Again, I was shocked in the Fall of 1901 when Turkey failed to retreat from Armenia and allowed me to occupy the Black Sea, Austria vacated Rumania, and Germany allowed me to occupy Sweden.  I built an army in both St. Petersburg and Sevastopol in order to protect my northern border from possible English incursion and to block Turkish aggression.  England was very adamant that he would take a fleet build in St. Petersburg as a direct threat to England.  He proffered that I leave St. Petersburg unoccupied.  When I informed him that I would compromise and build an army instead, this was no better in England's opinion.  I was comfortable with my non-aggression agreement with Germany.  With France in the Ruhr, there was very little chance that Germany would be coming east.  For England to insist that I would be imposing a direct threat by building anything at all in St. Petersburg, only told me that he had his eye on St. Petersburg.  Eventually, England offered me a "deal" that made Russia's build in St. Petersburg acceptable; favorable only to England.  The best option left to me by this "deal" was to inform Germany of the plan and work with him instead.  I don't know that it was obvious at this point that France and England were allied against Germany; but, it seemed like a relatively safe bet.  So, I did my best to ensure that Germany felt like he needed to deal with me because HE needed an ally.  Besides, since Germany allowed me to occupy Sweden, it seemed only fair that I should return the favor and support Germany against England.

On my Southern border, Austria did a very good job of making me feel like his vacating Rumania was the peace overture I had asked for.  I took the bait, hook, line and sinker.  I knew that if Austria stabbed me that I would lose the fleet in the Black Sea.  It was a crippling blow when he did indeed stab me and the fleet was lost.  Still, it seemed to me at the time like I had Austria on my side; he was desperate enough for a friend to vacated Rumania a season earlier.  So, when Austria and Turkey joined to disband my fleet and take Rumania from me, I was disappointed but not completely shocked.

Two things happened in the Autumn of 1902 (the retreat phase); first, knowing that I was going to break even with the supply count and would be able to rebuild my Rumanian army in Warsaw, I retreated off-the-board.  I and Austria had successfully stabbed each other; to retreat to Galicia would only have made it perfectly clear that Russia intended to continue its attack on Austria.  Therefore, by retreating off-the-board, I was hoping to regain Austria's trust and attempt to pull the Austrian/Turkish alliance apart.  I even offered peace to Turkey and did my best to point out how pointless his attack on me was; yet another effort to revisit forging the Juggernaut.  Austria and Turkey both rebuffed my efforts.  Second, I decided to make an effort to form the now victorious French/German/Russian alliance by explaining to France that Russia would continue to support Germany against England.  Therefore, Germany would continue to have the strength to rebuff France and England's attacks; now was a good time to change sides.  As Simon has already explained, I really didn't have too much convincing to do.

From there on, the rest of the game was very predictable. My one regret in the game is that I did not make another effort to join forces with Turkey after the Fall of 1903 when he finally pulled out of Armenia.  I would have gladly joined forces with Turkey; forming the Juggernaut at long last.  However, I thought I had made it perfectly clear after his rebuff at the end of 1902 that I would make no further effort until he contacted me.  Also, by this time, I was well entrenched with Germany and France.  Form an alliance with Turkey at this point?  This seemed pointless to me because I would have to stab him at some point.   I was very comfortable and happy with my alliance with Germany and was not going to stab him.  Still, what could have been . . . I wonder now.

Thanks again to Tim for running a well managed game.  I enjoyed playing with all of you and look forward to meeting you again . . . let the battle lines be drawn!

Best Regard,                Darryl (Russia - DipKnight(at)gmail.com)

DC 335 Spring 1905 Results - dipknight   (Oct 13, 2010, 2:24 pm)
All,

As this game was so short, I intend to be as detailed as Simon (or more so) in my EOG Statement.  I know practically everyone is very interested in some of the decisions I made and why. However, I do not have time to make it happen before Friday.  I will mass mail my EOG Statement as everyone else has done (so far), hopefully on Saturday sometime.

In the mean time, I want to give a big THANKS to Tim.  I have been the GM of a few games that did not go smoothly and know how difficult it can be to be the GM (not that there was anything that didn't go smooth in this game, I'm just saying).

Congratulations, Simon and Matt for sharing in the Draw.  And, congratulations Yannis, Jyri, Mike, and Stuart for the Survival.  More to follow from Russia at a later date.

Best Regards,
              Darryl (Russia)

Hey all,
So I have to say I really enjoyed this game because of the twists and
turns it took. I remember that at the beginning of the game England
proposed a full-on alliance from the start. I was not ready to give him
the commitment he wanted because I feel alliances and trust need to be
built up on the parties' actions, and thus I worried that he would
interpret my hesitance as an intention to attack him. While this was
not at all the case, I still tried to reach out to France.
Unfortunately, as you all saw, I became the odd man out in the western
three and faced an attack from France and England. I did the only thing
I could and bunkered down in a defensive shell and begged Russia for
help. Luckily Russia saw the threat of a strong EF alliance, especially
because of Italy's slow start, and distracted England in Scandinavia.
The turning point of the game came when England and France became
frustrated that they weren't making fast enough progress against the
wall Russia and I put up and began to become worried about each other.
France eventually switched sides and, after a couple seasons of pulling
away from me to prove his intent, our triple alliance was formed.
There isn't really much more to say after that, as England had no chance
1 on 3 and all of us were able to divert some units east. Austria was
trying to convince me that France would go for the solo but thankfully
he kept his word and prevented me from having to make a tough decision.
I hate having to turn on allies with whom you have worked well just to
prevent them from soloing.
So congrats to Simon and Darryl and thanks to everyone else, especially
Tim, for a great game. Hope to see you all in another one soon.

Great game everyone, that was most enjoyable! I logged on just for this final moment!
As a final request, Tim, could you please show us what the next round (Spring 1905, that is) would look like if there was a negative consensus?

Thanks, and great job everyone!

DC 335 Spring 1905 Results - Slangers   (Oct 12, 2010, 4:35 pm)
FRENCH GAME END STATEMENT.

I have to say that I am glad this one is over. Of all the games I've played over the years, this one was the one I have enjoyed the least. It's hard to put my finger on why, but I think it was just that the quality of some of the negotiations was rather poor and most of the manouevres very predictable and straightforward. A game with few surprises...

From the start of the game I felt I established a strong bond with Mike and a strong French-English alliance looked on the cards. I stuck my colours to the mast straight away and broke my agreements with Germany as early as Spring 1901, in the hope of killing him quickly. Although the comms with England were easy and the planning was detailed, things did not go to plan. At one point paranoia took over and I failed to move assertively, giving Germany some breathing space. England kept the faith though and we got ourselves into a position where we could cause some damage. At that point England made his fatal error and allowed me into the Channel. From there a stab was obligatory and I was fortunate that I could persuade Matt to trust me. From there the great RFG alliance sprang to life.

Relations with Russia were good throughout. Darryl was a very wary player and this suited my ambitions to dominate the game. With England giving me London in exchange for assistance should I want to go for the solo win, I felt pretty safe in my part of the world, so could send my fleets south. Italy had made serious mistakes early on in the game, so was easy meat for me and I began to sense the possibility of a French win. With a further stab on Mike, picking up the Italian centres and then a few scraps from the German table it would just about have been possible. I couldn't do it alone though so near the end of the game I made overtures to Darryl about attacking Germany, but he was not interested. At that point I settled for the draw.

For anyone who was wondering, my spring 1905 moves would have put me in a position to take Lpl and secure the elimination of England, along with the capture of Tunis and support for Germany into Tyrolia. I was not tempted by offers of effective proxy control of Austrian units. This would be against the rules of DC and although I will pull almost any other stunt to win a game, picking up a cheap and tawdry win in that manner would have given me no satisfaction.

I would love to know what was going on in the Turkish corner. Stuart- you never gave a straight answer to any question I posed to you and I had no idea where your loyalties lay.

Congratulations to everyone for surviving the game and especially to Darryl and Matt for their share in the draw. They both played a good game and kept a lid on my options.

Finally, big big thanks to Tim for running the game so well. Most GMs make a mistake at some time, but Tim's performance was flawless. I know it is a very difficult task and I'm very appreciative of his efforts.

Best wishes to all and vive la France.

Simon

DC 335 Spring 1904 Norway - waltersm1   (Sep 22, 2010, 1:55 pm)
All,
Needless to say, this game hasn't gone according to plan. Mighty
England is on the verge of defeat, helplessly fighting off a FGR
alliance. As some of you have commented in email, my recent moves seem
to have accelerated my demise. You have asked me to fight on, fight on
the beaches, fight on the landing grounds, but please fight. I feel an
explanation is in order.
I'm that rare Diplomacy player that keeps to his commitments (when they
don't get in the way). Sure, if it leads to a strategic advantage, I'm
not against the odd deception; lying is a part of the game. And as a
rule I don't hold grudges (they keep you from winning!)
Well folks, I made a commitment to Russia. And as I spiral into the
abyss, I am going to keep it! A little petty. Yes, maybe. But also an
important object lesson ... those on death row love that last meal!
I look forward to playing with you all again.
Good luck all,
Mike

DC 335 Fall 1903 Results - fencertim   (Sep 09, 2010, 4:19 pm)
We had one straggler for orders but just
an hour late, I was not ready to adjudicate at that point but it was here
before I started so I am going to let it ride (it’s generally accepted
that no one likes NMRs).…..there were no retreats needed so let’s
move on to the adjustments. Five powers have orders due.

Deadline for those will be Tuesday
September, 14th at 21:00 GMT. Please check my work and report
