DC341: EOG Statement from Russia - MagDox   (Mar 06, 2011, 12:49 pm)
Well the game did not start quite as I had hoped. Disagreement with
Turkey over the Black Sea was to be expected, but his army moving to
Armenia was an unwanted distraction. After coming to an agreement
with Austria I was concerned when he immediately broke it, moving to
Galicia and then supporting himself into Rumania with Turkish help.
The silver lining was that Germany didn't keep me out of Sweden,
allowing me to build and put up a fight in the south.

Austro-Hungary, Turkey, and The Balkans:

At this point I was furiously urging Italy to help me against a
perceived A-T alliance, and urging Austria and Turkey to attack each
other. With Turkey not fully committed to the northern attack, Jon
proceeded to turn on Turkey, which allowed me to take Rumania at the
expense of ceding the Black Sea to Turkey. Unfortunately for Jon I
wasn't willing to forgive his transgressions and proceeded to
organise a tripartite attack on Austria, keeping the bulk of the
gains for myself. Once it was clear the Austrian threat was ended I
was able to focus on methodically dealing with Turkey. Since Italy
had given Jon a lifeline in 1904, I began to dominate the alliance
between Italy and myself, and keeping all of Turkey's centres for
myself only increased the gap between us. I helped Italy regain his
centres and then urged him westwards while I dealt with Turkey. I
was intentionally slow to kill Turkey for fear that the other powers
would see my strong position and attack me before I had consolidated
my gains and redeployed my units. Ultimately I came out of the wars
here with a very strong position, and there wasn't really any point
at which Italy could have turned on me and won.

Scandinavia:

Due to a bit of miscommunication I had managed in spring 1902 to
slip into Norway, but expecting to be bounced in the North Sea
slipped right back out in fall. At this point Germany was under
quite heavy attack from both England and France and I knew that with
the problems I was facing with A-T I had to stall their advance.
Catie, however was understandably paranoid, especially since it
looked as though I had forgone a build by vacating Norway. A timely
build in StP gave me an army in Scandinavia and I took Norway,
ceding Sweden to Germany so as not to lose it to England. From this
position Catie and I took control of the North Sea, convoyed a
German army to England, and put the Anglo-French war machine into
retreat. The situation would likely have stayed stalemated had
Italy's fleets at this point not moved west forcing France to vacate
the NAO and abandon his beleaguered English ally.

Germany:

Despite a mistake allowing France to occupy Kiel, Catie had a solid
position as Germany with 6 centres and more to be found in England.
At this point I re-occupied Sweden without informing Catie, but I
think she was mollified by my aiding her into Liverpool. Ultimately,
however, I was looking for where my 18 centres would come from for a
solo victory: I had 4 in the Balkans, would have 3 fom Turkey, 2
from Scandinavia and 4 from Russia, so needed 5 more. Either Germany
or Italy could have provided these centres and I maintained a
presence ready to strike at Italy should he stop heading west, but
Shawn was a solid ally all game whereas I did not believe Catie
would sit back if I went for a solo. I had to offer her the chance
though, so...

EOG Proposal:

I submitted an EOG Proposal along with my orders for Fall 1907. I
had only 13 centres at this point, but given my position I figured
that my solo victory was inevitable. I knew Turkey, Italy and
England would support the proposal, France was looking at an Italian
invasion against his undefended south so might as well. Once it
failed the future hinged on Italy's decision: whether to help me
achieve my solo, or work with F-G against me. Had he turned on me I
expected I could take his three eastern centres and from there add
one Turkish and one German, but Shawn stuck with me and continued
his attack on France so I sought my centres from Germany.
Unfortunately for her I had already manoeuvred myself into position
and by the end of 1908 had control of the seas and her eastern
border. I don't know what prompted her retreat westwards, but her
defeat was inevitable. And with a few gains I hit the magic number.

Summary:

It was definitely a strange game for me: initially threatened by
both AH and Turkey, it took a lot of patience to build my position
in the south, and on the other side of the map I was again initially
on the defending side helping Germany against E-F. What may have
looked like two separate fights was for me one large fight, with
unit gains from one front often going to reinforce the other front.
I'd like to extend my thanks once again to Matt for taking over
Turkey, he did little wrong and I tried to provide him with a
survival but from his starting position he couldn't have done
anything to prevent his fate. I think the end-of-game position will
be a little unfair to Catie who deserves lots of credit for
defending so successfully against E-F, and thanks to Shawn for
sticking with me and helping me to my first solo on Diplomaticcorp
(hopefully not the last). I hope everyone enjoyed the game as much
as I did: as Adam said, the end became a bit stale but that
shouldn't take anything away from the excitement of the beginning.
Finally, a big thank-you to Adam for all his efforts.

DC 341: Peace via Conquest - AceRimmer   (Mar 04, 2011, 3:22 pm)
The war is over! Peace carries the day! ...um, because Russia carries peace across the continent at the point of gun. It is now time for the Triumph of the Tsar! Proud and victorious peasant warriors march along bunting-festooned streets. Admiring ladies seek to catch but the glimpse of Gareth's eye; they pray that he will father children with them. At least until his next game, Gareth is a militaristic, autocratic monolith of power. Enjoy it while it lasts.
All non-French-German units hold. The Italian army in Picardy is dislodged and destroyed.
England, France, Germany, and Italy grit out moral victories, staving off elimination. They may now use their survival status to enjoy a life of cowering before the beneficence of their Russian masters. As it should be.
We have a weekend upon us. Please use the time wisely to write end of game statements. It is time to relive your conquests and frustrations.
Thank you to everybody for an education in the game of Diplomacy. I especially want to thank Matt for serving as a replacement player; and praise & thanks to Catie and Gareth, neither of whom NMR'd once in the entire game.

DC 341: Spr & Sum 1910 - AceRimmer   (Feb 28, 2011, 9:34 am)
Okay. The Russian solo is officially mathematically unstoppable unless Gareth intentionally throws it away. Since we have come this far, and since nobody has proposed a solo lately, I recommend you all get your orders in super quickly *marked final*. That way, I may adjudicate and then we can reward our all-too-deserving winner with a true 18+ center solo. Afterward, we can all take our time and bask in the blinding and sun-tanning light of his resplendence.
Meanwhile, you may wish to be writing/finalizing your end of game statements. Speaking as a player/GM, EoG statements are often one of the most rewarding parts of the game. Don't let the later stagnation of this game erase your memories of the vibrancy of its beginning!
There are two retreats, both auto-retreats:
French F MAO retreats to NAO
Italian A Gascony retreats to Spain.

DC 341: Arethra Franklin is warming up - AceRimmer   (Feb 18, 2011, 10:05 am)
The fat lady looks like she's getting ready to sing... but, lordy, what a melodious voice!

So, the big news is the wholesale conversion of the German homeland to Mother Rus. Berlin, Denmark, Kiel, Munich. Da, da, da, da. Russia's score right now? Two touchdowns and a field goal. One more, and it's game over.

Elsewhere... Russia's Italian friend... far from converting an entire nation, he loses Brest.

And that, my friends, is the difference between a Patriarch and a Pope. With a Patriarch, you can convert all of Germany. With a Pope, you can't even keep what you had. Must have something to do with married priests...

There is one auto-retreat:

Italian A Brest retreats to Picardy.

Winter is due on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. CST, but I can adjudicate today if I get all orders before about 3:00 p.m. Orders are due from Germany, Italy, and Russia. It's a good thing for Russia that he has four home centers so he can use all of those builds.

DC 341: Spring 1909 - AceRimmer   (Feb 10, 2011, 1:40 pm)
Once again, the Russian solo proposal fails to gain unanimous assent. Apparently, his campaign slogan of ???Surrender! We will crush you!??? isn???t winning over as many supporters as you might think.

Because the proposal fails, your little painted blocks continue to shuffle around a map of Europe. Italy gains the Mid-Atlantic!... in spite of misordering twice. Russia plows into both Berlin and Denmark. Germany scrambles to re-position. France???s efforts are generally stymied. And England remains placid.

There are no retreats! So, just send me some orders by the 17th, would ya?

DC 341: F1908 Adjudication/Vote - AceRimmer   (Feb 03, 2011, 3:10 pm)
Thank you all for your patience. It has been a downright hectic day for me.

You will all be happy to know that the end of game proposal does not succeed. How many yes votes were there? How many nays? What about those pesky little abstentions? Keep your gun barrels polished, pour another round, and let???s make like the Hatfields and the McCoys!

The big winner this year will is Italy, who performs a Julius-Caesar-in-Gaul impersonation and collects two centers at the expense of the French.

There are three retreats, two of them auto-retreats (unless their owners contact me with an OTB request):
The French fleet in Spain retreats to Portugal.
The Russian fleet in Clyde retreats to Norwegian Sea
The German fleet in North Sea may retreat to Belgium, English Channel, Helgoland Bight, Holland, London, Skagerrak, or OTB.

We say farewell to Matt Kelly. Thank you profusely with lavish public displays of affection for taking over our abandoned Turkey. You are a hero, Matt.

We *may* say farewell to Nathan Powell, too, if Catie retreats to London. Nathan has been a dogged if not desperate fighter ever since Russia sneaked into Norway and compromised his northern flank.

That retreat order is due tomorrow by 3:00 p.m. CST, Catie, but I???ll adjudicate it sooner if you???d like. Then, winter adjustments come 24 hours later. In case you???d like a peek behind the curtain, the adjustments are:

England: Supp 1 Unit 1 Build 0
France: Supp 4 Unit 5 Remove 1
Germany: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0
Italy: Supp 10 Unit 8 Build 2
Russia: Supp 13 Unit 13 Build 0

If Catie retreats OTB or to London, then Germany has one build (which would be unusable on account of her home centers all being occupied at the moment). If Gareth retreats OTB, then he'd have one build available, too.

It's one of those rare moments in Diplomacy when all of the armies and fleets seem to move in one direction: Northwest. There are no retreats, but things look dire for the French. Not too peppy for the Germans either, come to think of it. However, England is likely to live another day. And Turkey finds a temporary home in Greece.

DC 341: S1908 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Jan 27, 2011, 3:17 pm)
So, I intentionally misled you with the subject line, because I want you to read this.
The adjudication is, in fact, delayed (ahem, Italy). This is Shawn's second NMR. This is the ninth NMR of this game (so, this note is not meant specifically for Shawn). This trend is disturbing because it feels like more adjudications are delayed these days than go through on time. There is no chief offender (Harry was ejected), so really, I'm not busting any one butt in particular. It's a team thing. But there have been enough delays that, well... that I'm writing this email.
The whole point of this email? I think we can finish this game without any more NMRs. Please do your best to help.
In the interests of positive reinforcement, I'd like to point out that both Catie and Gareth have beaten the deadline every season this game.
Thanks,
Adam
p.s. In case you think it can't be done... DC 345 is currently in the midst of its sixth game year without a single NMR, and it's an 8-player variant with three eliminations already!
p.p.s. As one player pointed out to me this last season, my rules do not severely penalize you for being late. You get an NMR in the club stats, and if you are a frequent abuser or are late a few days, you get booted (like Harry). Weak as it is, I still (for now) prefer this system to the harsher standard of NMR = all units hold (which can really screw a game). This means that timeliness is ultimately a matter of sportsmanship.

DC341: EOG Proposal - MagDox   (Jan 18, 2011, 2:01 pm)
Hi everyone,
It's been a great game, but I've asked Adam to run an EOG-Proposal.
I felt I should offer the opportunity for Nathan, Matt, and perhaps even
James to grab survivals. Nathan and James played a great game and could
perhaps have continued the stalemate in the north if Italy hadn't headed
west, and Matt stepped into an impossible position when our Turkey
dropped out.
I'm happy to play on if the vote's defeated, perhaps there's another
surprise left?
Best,
Gareth

French A Marseilles retreats to Gascony unless disbanded.
Russian A Smyrna may retreat to Armenia, Syria, or oblivion.

Turkey survives! Way to stick it to the man, Matt! And elsewhere, the engines of war grind on without any huge surprises, nor indeed, many *flags*. Just the three above-mention *dislodged* units plus a trio of *fails*. And a sneaky (dare I say Trickey?) convoy to Wales.

Ankara, Edinburgh, Kiel, Liverpool, and Marseilles all change ownership, which tallies to:

England: -1 = 1
France: -2 (but only one disband due to last season???s disband) = 5
Germany: +1 = 6
Italy: +1 = 8
Russia: +2 = 13
Turkey: -1 = 1

There is an End of Game proposal. So, votes are required from *all* players. The vote fails if even a single surviving player votes ???No??? or abstains. The proposal? Russian solo; everybody else survives. All in favor, please vote ???Aye???. All opposed, please vote ???Nay???.

Meanwhile, I will be away tomorrow, so retreats are not due until Thursday. Adjustments are due on Friday. I???d like to run the vote by Thursday if I can.

On the map...

The following units retreat. The French army auto-retreats to Gascony unless Mr. Trickey specifies otherwise:

English F Edinburgh may retreat to Clyde, Yorkshire, or oblivion.
