Ancient Med: Persia AAR - pedros   (Jul 22, 2011, 6:59 am)
This was my second game of Ancient Med; the first ended
prematurely but I was in a strong position as Rome, and wanted to check out
what it felt like at the other end of the board, so I bid strongly for
Persia.  It’s probably the weakest power, so not surprisingly there
were no competing bids!

I think quite a lot of what I write will be influenced by a
feeling I had that the game is actually unbalanced and favours Rome strongly.
In the early game, the Adriatic forms a barrier almost as strong as a mountain
range, and its effect is to give Rome only one neighbour for much of the game
(I’d be interested to hear Nick’s and Tim’s view about this).
Correspondingly, Carthage is in a weak position, almost inevitably facing the
whole Roman force from the outset.

I’m also interested to hear what Charles has to say about
Tim’s belief that they began with an anti-Persian agenda.  Charles’
communications were throughout the game brief and, most of the time, infrequent
– but I never sensed hostility in them  (Tim’s on the other
hand were hostile in every case – not in tone, but in content.
Every one asked me to give up an advantage in the interests of closer
cooperation between us!  (I did think, Tim, that somewhere along the line
you might have realised that a change of tack might have brought better results!)

From the outset, Jim was the only player from whom I
received anything like a friendly response, and this led to us deciding to take
on Egypt early.  In the light of my belief that Carthage would have its
hands full with Rome that was a mistake; if Egypt wasn’t already disposed
to join Greece against me, my opening move (threatening to take Jerusalem
contrary to our agreement) probably sealed that!  And Jim had recognised,
before Spring 01, that he was going to have to compete with Rome for the
western islands.  Mistake!

Greece and I had agreed a DMZ from Isauria to Bithynia, but
it was no surprise when he invaded there in the Fall.  From then on the
pattern of my game was determined.  I was quite proud of my resistance
(although there was one other, possibly crucial, error in Spring 04.  An
order A Armenia -  Chersonesus would have saved Chersonesus and Greece’s
future might have been bleak indeed, with Rome breathing down his neck,

I spent a lot of time trying to persuade Greece that he
needed to resist Rome at an early stage.  It was clear that Rome was the
one to watch.  Tim was having serious trouble making progress against me,
whilst Rome was growing steadily.  Charles, in Egypt, was playing a clever
diplomatic game.  Whilst Tim was clearly always  trying to persuade
me to give up territory and SCs (quite why he thought I’d fall for it
beats me!), Egypt was quietly supportive.  When I made the decision to
evacuate the south to  bolster my position v Greece I was well aware that
Egypt might overrun me, as he did.  But there was no doubt that given half
a chance Greece would do it, so I had little choice!

After that the game became for me largely a spectator sport.
Greece and Egypt did well to stop Rome’s progress, and in the end I
thought that Egypt could pull off the solo.  I was a little disappointed
that nobody could forge a diplomatic initiative to break the 3-way deadlock,
but then I have no idea what efforts were tried.  Possibly the level of
trust and fear was such that no way through could be found.

Well done though to the three of you; I don’t know
what happened to Jim – I hope he’s OK, but his defection felt
gradual and the result of the way the war was going; if so, that’s a
pity.

And very many thanks to Dirk for GMing extremely ably, and
for introducing me to Blind Auction Bidding – which as a result is now a
regular feature in another place!

dc371: GM to Players - dknemeyer   (Jul 19, 2011, 11:57 pm)
Hi Everyone,
I'm very hopeful that you will follow Tim's lead and contribute an after action report. My only request of players in my games - outside of getting your orders in on time - is to submit some kind of AAR that shares with all players and observers your thinking about the game.
Thank you in advance.

Housse Rules - dknemeyer   (Jul 11, 2011, 11:20 am)
Hi Pete,

Yes, that is why I had it 8 hours to begin with. But the days where that has happened, it has ruined my next WORK day, which is just not acceptable.

I think what I'm learning is I just don't want to GM anymore. It is really hard to fit into my professional life. I do it to give back to the DC community but the reality is, aside from being so time-pressed, I do not have the core skills that would make GM easy (being systematic, being detail-oriented).

At this point your grace period is already used so, for this game, it will have no impact.

Dirk

Can I point out an intrinsic unfairness in your grace period rule; in principle it affects me and I don't know about the others (no idea where they are all based), but it will equally be important in other games you GM.

It is because your deadlines are always at the same time of day - 2200 British time.  A grace period from then, whether of 8 or 6 hours, is going to be entirely when British players are likely to be asleep, whereas those in the New World are wide awake.

If you are going to use grace periods, then they have to be equally available to all players.

Cheers,

dc371: Sp10 Correction - dknemeyer   (Jul 11, 2011, 8:57 am)
Hi Everyone,
FYI, Greece ordered a bounce in Sparta (as opposed to not ordering ION). The attached maps reflect this correction.
Effective immediately my house rules now require players to report errors within 48 hours of posting the adjudication. Also effective immediately, my house rules are changed to allow only a one-time 6 hour - not 8 hour - grace period.
The deadline will not change unless someone requests it in the next six hours. Good luck.
Thanks,
Dirk

Diplomats,

Have we reached a stopping point? The action on the board seems to suggest "maybe", as does the request for a 3-way Egypt-Greece-Rome draw vote that is now up for consideration.

There are no retreats, so get in your prelims by Friday and a Yes or No vote on the draw proposal with your orders. If you submit multiple sets of orders the LAST vote you submit will count. If you never submit a vote with any set of your orders that will be interpreted as a NO vote.

Happy hunting!

Dirk

Fleets in Athens and Ravenna for the Greeks and Romans, respectively. Meanwhile Egyptian strategists elect to bank their build.

FYI, I will be home again as of the next adjudication for a few weeks, so you can generally expect my more timely process of adjudicating during that period.

Prelims are due in 18 hour. Please do get them in! Smile

Diplomats,

The battle of the ancients is beginning to take on the distinct feeling of World War 1. All sides are dug in and progress is slowly, painfully, being made. In the process the poor Carthaginians are forever caught in the gears of war.

The only retreat is Roman F Gulf of Tacape. I've taken the liberty of auto-retreating to Thapsus. Nick, if you prefer a disband to gain a build just let me know that with your build orders.

Speaking of build orders, those are due in just under 47 hours. Thanks to disbands each of Egypt, Greece and Rome have a build coming. Two for Rome if F GoT is disbanded off the board. Other players may feel free to send along conditional alternate orders in the event Rome choose the disband course.

Happy dipping,

Dirk

Diplomats,

With all of our leaders again functional the war continues apace! Heavy lies the head of Caesar back in Rome, as both Egypt and Greece made relevant gains on her position. Might this portend another draw vote soon? Or does the EG alliance have bloodlust on their minds?

Once again, no retreats. It is a cold epoch here in the Med as summer and autumn are virtually non-existent as seasons over the last decade. Wink

dc371: Plan for adjudication and beyond - dknemeyer   (Jun 21, 2011, 4:05 pm)
Hi Everyone,
I have orders from everyone except the absent player. If no one objects my plan is to adjudicate as soon as I have his orders. You may change your orders between now and then if you'd like.
Importantly, I will be traveling and/or incredibly busy from now thru next Thursday. Depending on when the final order from this season comes in, that has the potential to impact a total of four adjudications. As always my intent is to get adjudications out the same night they are due but expect in multiple cases that will mean very, very late EST during that time period.
Thanks,

Diplomats,

Sadly Persia did not order her troops but must be buoyed by a generous bit of unnecessary support from the Egyptians.

The board pivots once again, as Egypt and Greece appear to have made nice in common service of slowing more glory to Rome. Still, it is only the the Roman who grows this year, at the expense of innocent citizens of Thapsus, abandoned by their war powers. It seems clear this game will be won or drawn based on the disposition of relationships, a disposition that has remained mercurial throughout. And, as must by now be evident, the draw vote has failed.

With no retreats we have only the one Roman build to consider. Deadline is Thursday! Other players, it's never too early to get in your prelims for next spring, either, which are due Friday. Smile

Happy dipping,

Dirk

dc371: Fall adjudication - dknemeyer   (Jun 14, 2011, 10:05 pm)
Hi Folks,
I am not finding any orders from Persia. As Jim is in the U.K. he is likely sleeping by now. I will wait until 6 am GMT before adjudication. However it is possible that I am not able to stay up that late tonight as I have not been feeling well. In that case the adjudication will come sometime before 18:00 GMT tomorrow. Wednesday June 15.
Pete, if you are an early riser do get me your order! Smile

Diplomats,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the Carthaginian leadership has apparently abdicated and the country is plunged into civil disorder.

We have a draw proposal to consider: a 3-way Egypt/Greece/Rome. Please submit a YES or NO vote with your fall orders. Failure to vote will be interpreted as a No.

The board gently shifts and you sense the participants are starting to think about the endgame. There is only one retreat: the Egyptian fleet Messenian Sea can retreat to Ausonian Sea or Libyan Sea or OTB. I've auto-retreated to the Libyan Sea. Charles, please correct or confirm this no later than Thursday at our deadline.

On to the fall! Prelims due Friday!

Happy dipping,

Dirk

dc371: Fa07 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jun 01, 2011, 12:16 am)
Gents,

It will remain an open question whether the assaults on fair Carthage would have enjoyed success if Hannibal's military remained coordinated. Regardless, the tactics employed by Egypt and Rome lack for nothing and both of our Mediterranean superpowers will ascend as a consequence.

The only retreat available is Roman A Leptis. It can retreat to Numidia, Phazania or OTB. Given that Numidia is a supply center I have auto-retreated there. Nick, feel free to change that with your Winter orders. Everyone else, you may submit conditional builds and disbands based on a changed retreat. Jim, you may send in two sets of disband orders, based on needing to disband one or two units.

So assuming the Roman retreat to Numidia, we have two Roman builds, one Egyptian build and two Carthaginian disbands. Orders due Thursday at our usual time.

Enjoy!

Dirk

dc371: Fa07 Delay - dknemeyer   (May 31, 2011, 4:20 pm)
Hi Everyone,
FYI, Jim (Carthage) has not yet gotten orders in. That triggered his once-a-game eight hour grace period. Any other player who still has their grace period remaining - which is all of you - may also change orders but that will expend your grace period in the process.
I will adjudicate promptly as soon as I am able after getting Jim's orders, or will adjudicate at 1 MA EST (local) without them.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
Dirk
