DC431 Game Over - smileyrob   (Sep 03, 2012, 7:39 am)
Gentlemen,

I apologize for not having wrapped this game up better than I did. I had been on a two week vacation visiting family in various parts of the west. I arrived home to discover my home internet service was down. Unfortunately the provider was reluctant to believe it was a problem on their end, not with my modem, and it took well over a week to get service restored. When it finally was, this game had somewhat slipped my mind.

As you know, the game ended in a three way draw between France, Germany and Russia. I'd again like to congratulate Sun, Andrew, Lynn, and Michael on this result.

I'd like to collect and publish End of Game statements from each of you. Please, rather than emailing them to the group directly, please send them to me, and I will then publish them simultaneously. That allows everyone to express their thoughts, without the EOGs turning into reactions to the first couple published. There will be plenty of time to react and comment on others EOG when they all see the light of day.

Robert,

I would be willing to switch from 1900 to Ambition and Empire if you would prefer to substitute that Von Powell variant :>Wink .

Gentlemen,

The game is over as all seven players voted in favor of a French-German-Russian three way draw. Congratulations to Sun, Andrew, and Lynn as well as Michael, our original France.

I apologize for not sending this information last night, but I failed to make it all the way home, choosing instead to camp in the woods between Crescent City, California and Cave Junction, Oregon. I am still not in a spot with regular internet, so I can't send a final map or update the game page at diplomaticcorp. But I figured you would want to know this result, and a message from my phone would suffice for now.

As I said in my note yesterday, I am more than happy to GM another game of 1900, though if I do, I'd like to use some other mapping software than realpolitik. Any suggestions? If there were interest in playing Ambition & Empire rather than 1900, I'd start one of those games instead. Also I like to play these games too, so if any of
you are willing and able to master a game, I encourage you to do so, and consider me as a player.

Thanks for playing this game, and for the most part submitting orders in a timely manner with minimal prodding. It's been fun. I hope everyone else enjoyed it too.

DC431 Spring 1903 results - smileyrob   (Aug 15, 2012, 1:55 am)
Gentlemen,
Here are the Spring 1903 results. Please not there is a problem with the maps. France ordered Mar-Spa(ec) and Pie-Mar. The "orders" map shows the French fleet sailing to the east coast of Spain, yet try as I might, I can't make the realpolitick program interpret that as anything other than the west coast. It's late and I don't want to spend any longer trying to figure out how to do it, plus I figure you all might like the results. Thus the maps show those two moves failing and the units remaining in Mar and Pie. But in fact the moves succeed and the units are in Spa(ec) and Mar. The program does not allow one to edit the maps during a summer phase so I cannot fix this until after adjudicating Austria's retreat. But I will do so then, and the correct locations of the units are noted in the unit locations section of this adjudication.

I need only a single retreat, for the Austrian unit in Serbia. Jerome, that is due by Thursday, 8 PM PDT.

DC431 Winter 1902 results - smileyrob   (Aug 09, 2012, 7:58 pm)
Gentlemen,

Here are the retreat and adjustment results. Jack choose not to retreat to Marseilles. I am interested in seeing how that decision plays out. Also with armies built in Berlin and Warsaw, we may be seeing the beginning of a bit of tension between Germany and Russia. Then again, maybe not. Are those armies headed for Austria instead?

DC431 Fall 1902 Results - smileyrob   (Aug 08, 2012, 12:52 pm)
Gentlemen,
Again I must apologize for the delay in publishing these results. I worked way too late into the evening last night,. I knew Tuesdays were going to be a busy day for me during the course of this game, and I should likely have made the deadlines either Mon/Wed or Wed/Fri. I hope I haven't inconvenienced or frustrated any of you too much.

First things first, the proposal to concede to Russia fails. However it has been proposed again, so please vote with your Spring 1903 orders.

We are beginning to see more separation in size amongst the powers, with Russia, France and Germany putting some distance between themselves and the rest. Austria and Italy are treading water, while Britain and maybe Turkey might be sinking.

I need a winter order from everyone save Jerome. Those are due by Thursday 8PM PDT. Unless someone request otherwise, I will adjudicate when I have all the orders. Remember you can condition your adjustments on other players' retreats. As it is possible for Italy to retreat to Marseilles, at the very least I will need conditional adjustment orders from Sun.

Gentlemen,
Here are the Spring 1902 results. Quite a few centers changed hands this season, but how many of those gains will be maintained through the fall? There are three retreating units. I need orders from Andrew and Jack by Thursday 8PM PDT. Jerome, feel free to send an order as well, though if I don't hear from you, I'll auto-retreat Trieste to Bosnia.

DC431 Winter 1901 Adjudication - smileyrob   (Jul 27, 2012, 11:43 am)
Gentlemen.

Sorry for the tardiness of the winter adjudication. It is mostly my fault. I had an incredibly long day yesterday and when I got home I plain forgot about this game. I'm sorry.

Fleets are the focus this winter, both for builds and disbands, as Britain removes two fleets, and wherever a fleet could have been built, it was.

DC431 Fall 1901 Adjudication - smileyrob   (Jul 24, 2012, 11:56 pm)
Gentlemen,
It took some time to get here, but the results for fall 1901 have arrived. Hopefully we can continue from this point without too much more (any???) delay.

The big loser in 1901 is Britain, who loses both Norway and Egypt while seeing France sail into the Channel. The big winner is Russia, who gains three centers, including Constantinople.

I generally adjudicate retreats and adjustments at the same time. Thus if you have an adjustment order, you can condition it on the retreats. Britain has two units to retreat, Italy one, and both need to end the winter with 4 units on the board, meaning Italy can build if Switzerland retreats OTB. Austria (1), Germany (1), and Russia (3) also have builds. Those orders are all due by Thursday, 8PM PDT. As usual, I'll adjudicate winter turns when I have all the orders, unless specifically requested to wait until the deadline.

dc431 replacement France - smileyrob   (Jul 18, 2012, 9:34 pm)
Gentlemen,

Sun Chung (sun.chung(at)gmail.com) has agreed to take over the French position. Welcome to the game Sun, and thank you.

I know some of you are eager to get things going as soon as possible, but I still think it best that we have a player able to submit French orders for Fall 1901. I don't wish to pressure Sun, or any of the rest of you, to submit orders before you have had an opportunity to communicate with one another. Thus I have moved the Fall 1901 deadline back until next Tuesday, July 24, 8pm PDT. If that time is needed, use it. However, if at all possible I'd like to adjudicate before then. If you are all comfortable with doing so, I'd like to try and adjudicate before the weekend, either tomorrow or Friday, and then get retreats/builds done by Saturday at the latest so that we might keep on schedule and have Tuesday be the deadline for Spring 1902. Basically, I'll adjudicate as soon as Sun tells me he is OK with it.

In case anyone wants it, here is our updated player roster.

DC431 Fall 1901 Late Player - smileyrob   (Jul 18, 2012, 6:58 am)
Gentlemen,

I do not have the Fall 1901 results for there is a player who has yet to turn in orders. My house rules state:

After the
first year of a game, each player will be given ONE eight hour grace period,
enabling them to turn in their orders and not receive an NMR up to eight hours
after the adjudication. Please note that any other players who take advantage
of the offending player's eight-hour grace period will, in the process, be
giving up their own since grace period for the game! As such, players who have
already used their grace period may never change their orders during another
player's use of this grace period.

We are eight hours after the deadline, but I take some blame for failing to publish this notice last night. I had an incredibly long week and fell asleep before doing so. Because of this, and because I would like to avoid the imbalance caused by NMRs I am going to begin the countdown with this message. If I receive orders from the offending player before 1 PM PDT today (8 PM GMT), they will be included with the results, otherwise that player will NMR.

Sorry,
Robert

DC431 Spring 1901 Adjudication - smileyrob   (Jul 10, 2012, 11:37 pm)
Gentlemen,
Here are the Spring 1901 results. I'll refrain from commentary at this time. There is one dislodged unit, the Austrian army in Switzerland. As Alsace is the only possible retreat destination, I have auto-retreated the unit. Thus the "result" map shows an Austrian army in Alsace. Jerome, if you'd prefer to disband the army, let me know by our normal retreat deadline (Thursday, 8PM PDT) and I'll re-do the summer results. Otherwise our next deadline will be Fall 1901 and occur Tuesday, July 17th, 8PM PDT. Enjoy your negotiations.

I am sorry if this in inconvenient of frustrating, but I will always grant extensions in such cases.

dc431 Winter 1900 Adjudication - smileyrob   (Jul 01, 2012, 10:52 pm)
Gentlemen,
Here are the winter results. I suspect there are no big surprises. The 12 builds are evenly divided between fleets and armies, though geographically most of the fleets come in the north while armies are more favored in the south.

Amongst those I heard from, there are a variaty of opinions on when we should have our next deadline. I am sympathetic to the argument that our normal tuesday deadline is too soon. Since Wednesday is a holiday, I am going to postpone the deadline until Thursday, but have it earlier in the day than normal, 4 PM PDT (11PM GMT). As the next phase is a summer, I'm going to give only 28 hours, and have it Friday, 8 PM PDT. I think this will allow us to resume our normal schedule the next week, with the Fall 1901 deadline on Tuesday, July 10, 8PM PDT.

dc431 replacement Britain found - smileyrob   (Jul 01, 2012, 11:08 am)
Gentlemen,

I have yet to hear from Ethan, and Mark Utterback (MDemagogue(at)gmail.com) has agreed to replace him. So Britain is now Mark's to play. Mark has already given build orders, but in case any of you desire to communicate with him before results are published, I'll extend the winter deadline until 8PM PDT this evening. (3AM GMT). As for Spring 1901 deadline, I'd prefer not to push it an extra week, but our normal Tuesday deadline seems a bit close. On the other hand, Wednesday is a holiday for many of us. What would you all prefer, stick with Tuesday, have it on the 4th, on Thursday the 5th, or just wait an entire week until Tuesday the 10th?

Robert

dc431 Winter 1900 late orders - smileyrob   (Jun 29, 2012, 12:27 pm)
Gentlemen,

I regret to inform you that our British player, Ethan, has yet to submit build orders. My house rules state:

(at)font-face {
font-family: "Times New Roman";
}(at)font-face {
font-family: "SimSun";
}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }table.MsoNormalTable { font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }ol { margin-bottom: 0in; }ul { margin-bottom: 0in; }

If a player has not submitted orders to the GM
by the deadline it shall invoke the following procedure:
In
the first year of a game, the player making the NMR will be immediately
removed from the game. That turn will not be adjudicated until a
replacement player has been found and a reasonable period of diplomacy
provided for.
As it is still the first game year, I should remove Ethan from the game and await a replacement player. Yet since Ethan did submit orders for both spring and fall, I am not completely opposed to leniency. I am going to begin searching for a replacement, and if one is found before we hear from Ethan, he will get the position. But if, before a replacement is found, Ethan does contact us, submit his orders, confirm his commitment to the game, and pledge to send preliminaries orders for the remainder of the game, I am inclined to let him keep his position. Of course if anyone objects, and believes I should strictly enforce the rule no matter how long it takes to find a replacement, then Ethan will not be allowed to resume playing.

I suppose I should apologize for this situation. Maybe it would have been better to have limited access to this game to players who have demonstrated that they do in fact play the games they sign onto. But I generally prefer to trust people until they give me a reason not to, and if GMs aren't willing to let unproven players play, how are they supposed to prove their reliability?

I am curious as to how active Ethan has been in this game. Does he regularly send press? Has anyone heard from him since the fall results were published?

Robert

dc431 Fall 1900 adjudication - smileyrob   (Jun 27, 2012, 12:31 am)
Gentlemen,
Here are the Fall 1900 results. There are no dislodged units. All the neutrals, save two, Denmark and Serbia have been claimed. Interestingly both of those centers were occupied in the spring only to be vacated this fall. Growth was rather evenly distributed, with no power gaining more than two centers, five gaining two, and two gaining one. Build orders are due Thursday, 8 PM PDT. Unlike with spring and fall orders, I'll publish the winter results as soon as I have everyone's orders, unless someone requests I wait until the deadline.

dc431 Spring 1900 adjudication - smileyrob   (Jun 20, 2012, 12:11 am)
Gentlemen,
The first results are ready, always a very exciting time in any Diplomacy game, as you get your first inclination of how trustworthy your neighbors may or may not be, and what rumored alliances may actually be taking shape. In this game, with a few notable exceptions, close neighbors seem to be staying out of one anothers way. Italy however moves an army to the border of Marseilles, while seeing Austria move an army to the border of Milan. With four armies from three powers surrounding it, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Switzerland this fall. Other potential areas of early conflict appear to be in the eastern Med between Turkey and Britain as well Scandinavia with both Britain and Russia moving multiple units towards the region

There are three attached files, two maps and a realpolitik file. The first map shows the movement and attempted movement of all units, the second where those units end up. I'll include at least these two maps with all adjudications. The realpolitik file is useful if you wish to test potential moves for future phases.

As there are no retreats, our next phase is Fall 1900. Deadline is in one week, Tuesday, June 26, 8PM PDT.
