DC455 Aberration - Fall 1911 - GAME END - Zoterik   (Nov 14, 2013, 5:16 am)
Gentlemen, after a mere 255 days and eleven years, Poland has accomplished the solo victory, taking six centres to secure his hold on Europe!  War weariness may have led into the assistance of Burgundy and Ukraine to enable the solo, despite the heroic eleventh-hour efforts of Israel, Sicily, and Spain.  Eleven years of gameplay is a short time given the level of intricacy involved, and to pull off the coup so soon is a mark of something--vision, cunning, or otherwise--for which Chris rightfully deserves his third solo.

A big thank you to all of you for playing this game.  It started a bit slowly, I know, but we got better as time went on.  I would really like to thank Thomas (Israel) for stepping into the game after the first Israelite player NMRed.  I feel like that turn may have decided the entire game and given Poland a small but important advantage, but the result of the game is wholly due to the actions of the players, not their dis-actions.  After all is said and done, the board clearly shows that Poland managed to keep all his rivals down while he made his solo bid unburdened by a rival solo bid waiting if he faltered.  And with all the draw proposals which came and went, I think the other players figured out what Poland had in mind, but perhaps too little, too late to stop the tide.  The final Fall moves are provided below.  Two units were dislodged this turn, but without any bearing on the final result so I gave them token retreats.

I would love to hear the players' thoughts on the game and on this variant.  If there is any particular variant you would like to try, don't hesitate to tell me.  I think I'll wait a bit before opening up a game as the others fill up and start moving.

DC455 Aberration - Fall 1910 - Zoterik   (Oct 22, 2013, 11:38 pm)
Well now, what do we have here?  Burgundy reclaims one home centre, the first nation to restore its ability to build, at the same time that Poland conducts naval exercises in the North Sea.  Is the game becoming Poland vs. The Rest?  With twenty-one centres, Poland is now six shy of the solo, and has five builds this year to bolster those efforts if chosen.  In the Balkans, Poland has surrounded the Sicilian holdouts in Szeged, and may also be able to claim Croatia and Venezia while the position in Anatolia is fortified.  It may be a very interesting turn to come!

Winter 1910 adjustments are due 28 October, 08:00 GMT.

Let's keep the ball rolling here!  Poland has three builds but elects to use none of them.  Perhaps he is our benevolent overlord, or perhaps he is simply biding his time for a master stroke.  For your consideration we also have a proposed two-way draw for Poland and Spain.  Send your yeas or nays with your orders!

Spring 1910 orders due 10 October, 08:00 GMT.  Please do use preliminary orders if you feel there is a chance you might forget or be late.

DC455 Aberration - Fall 1909 - Zoterik   (Sep 27, 2013, 7:50 am)
It's mildly amusing to wake up and find almost all the orders waiting for me.  The end of our ninth year puts the writing clearly on the wall, as Spain breaks through the Mediterranean and Poland lands an army in Anatolia!  Israelite leadership is paralyzed, but there is not much, it seems, which could have been done to hold off the relentless advance of the red and orange.  Events are unfolding rapidly as the yellow and blue alliance collapses, following the triumphant landing of Polish forces in Byzantine lands, and the unchallenged march into Libya of Spanish infantry following a death march through the Sahara.  There seems to be a real possibility of a distant solo, but any chance of Sicily or Israel participating in a draw seem just as distant, although in the opposite direction.

One unit needs a retreat (the faster the better), and I can take your adjustments at the same time.  I may not be able to get online until Sunday, just so you all know.

Autumn 1909 retreat due 29 September, 08:00 GMT.

DC455 Aberration – Spring 1909 - Zoterik   (Sep 20, 2013, 3:13 am)
Poland and Spain smell blood in the water, but Sicily and Israel are still holding firm against the tide of history and fate!  One retreat will be needed but I have the distinct feeling that this game is picking up speed (or at least, that's the feeling from my end of things).

Summer 1909 retreats due 22 September at 08:00 GMT (will adjudicate early unless "provisional"Wink.
Fall 1909 orders due 26 September at 08:00 GMT.

TOULOUSE, LANGUEDOC — The bloody battleground city, which has been claimed by three nations in the past nine years, is the site of renewed combat as the Sicilian navy attempts a bold conquest.  But to the east, the fields of Piedmont also suffer the slings and arrows of war, and the extended battleground results in a stalemate.  The residents of Languedoc, weary of the bloodshed, hope that a peace may be had soon, and are at this point apathetic to whose flag flies above them as long as their sons and daughters may be safe.  But for now, they are but ants to those who will play God for the fate of Europe.

BUCHAREST, RUMANIA — After the shock of being Ukrainian once again has worn off, there is no rest for the weary.  The Ukrainian fleet left port as part of successful efforts to reclaim the Black Sea as a Ukrainian sea from the Israelite invaders, but Rumania itself remains unconquered as both Polish and Israelite/Sicilian forces were unable to lay claim to the country after generals on both sides decided to take the same road to Bucharest, causing confusion and frustration as the matter was to be decided by a game of rock-paper-scissors, which failed utterly as both sides kept playing "scissors".

TUNIS, TUNISIA — The advance of the Spanish fleet into the Mediterranean had been stalled, but perhaps no longer.  Together with infantry forces marching through the deserts to the south, the residents of Tunis no longer feel secure and an eerie silence has descended over the city as preparations begin for the coming siege.  Tunis is very close to the Sicilian capital at Palermo, and if it falls it may be difficult for the Sicilian administration to hold off the flood of Spanish warships sailing for the Italian coast.  The same holds true for Cyrenaica to the southeast, which leads to the Israelite homeland, so far unaffected by the war which has devastated Europe.

DC455 Aberration – Winter 408 - Zoterik   (Sep 15, 2013, 4:48 am)
As you all know, a draw proposal has been made, but just as quickly it has been resoundingly shot down.  This game is not going to end in a 4-way any time soon, gentlemen.  Two nations are officially eliminated; please say farewell to Mikael (Éire) and Matthew (Hungary).  The battles continue to rage from the Atlas and the Alps to the Caucasus and the Carpathians!  What a convenient bit of alliteration that is.

DC455 Aberration - Fall 1908 - Zoterik   (Sep 10, 2013, 2:36 pm)
It occured to me some hours ago that I may be the closest DC player to the Syrian Civil War. Fascinating. Back to the world of dreams! It's a fantastic end to the year for Poland and Spain, and may well tip the balance in their favor.  Winter 1908 adjustments due 14 September at 08:00 GMT.

ALCLUYD - After a strong opening campaign, the Celtic nations are removed from relevance by the Polish/Spanish pact. Their final stand came at the port but reinforcements were not enough to hold off the enemy advance, and now the Irish, Welsh, and Scots must now look to an occupied future with a mixture of despair and pessimism. Whoever said this was an Aberration?

BUDAPEST - The Hungarians now find themsevles completely overcome by the quarreling Sicilians and Polish armies. The once-great Magyar capital is currently under Sicilian occupation, but it is a lonely guard they hold as they are surrounded by Polish forces.

ODESSA - Our Black Sea correspondant reports to us that the Rus' nation, brushed off by political scientists across the world as a Polish satellite state, may begin to return to relevance after Rumania was reconquered to great acclaim, albeit with significant Polish assistance.  Great celebrations erupted spontaneously across the city as news of the success spread, and the church bells were rung in celebration of the event.

SINOP, ANATOLIA - Across the sea, the similarly-forgotten Byzantine nation-in-exile also expands, advancing to the east and capturing Armenia before stopping at the Caucasus mountains. This may only be a triumph on paper, however. Byzantine generals are furious that their forces did not retake the capital at Constantinople, and it remains to be seen if this was an error at the highest levels, an action by a rogue commodore, or the true intentions of East Roman strategy.

DC455 Aberration - Spring 1908 - Zoterik   (Sep 04, 2013, 4:02 am)
Headlines from around the Continent:

BUDAPEST ??? Violent crowds have seized the royal palace and declared a Hungarian Republic, causing a civil war in the capital city between the people and the army. ??The main cause for the revolution appears to be the complete absence of leadership but the effect is that Hungarians are shooting upon each other whilst Sicilian and Polish forces advance unhindered upon the capital city. ??

POOLE, WESSEX ??? The Spanish fleet defending their conquered territory in Britain departed port bound for the Atlantic Ocean, further signifying the major shift in alliances following the collapse of Poland's prime ally. ??The absence of fleets in the North Sea and cooperative operations between Polish and Burgundian ground forces headed for northern Italy may give Sicilian generals some headaches in years to come.

CONSTAN??A, RUMANIA ??? The Polish garrison in this port city was surprised and rapidly overtaken by the amphibious assault by Israelite forces from Georgia, supported by naval bombardment from the Sicilian fleet in Varna, Bulgaria. ??The action solidifies the status of the Black Sea as an Israelite lake, despite the continued operations of Byzantine naval forces in support of said Israelites. ??The Polish forces were forced to retreat into the mountains of Transylvania.??

PALERMO ??? Crowds cheered the Israelite navy steaming towards the western Mediterranean, as the alliance between Sicily and Israel, which to many appeared impossible, continues to project power with strength and efficiency. ??Whether the pact may have the strength to take on the new Polish-Spanish alliance, remains to be seen. ??

Three units dislodged; one disbanded and two auto-retreated.

DC455 Aberration - Winter 1907 - Zoterik   (Aug 28, 2013, 2:57 am)
Well well well, what have we here?  This winter didn't quite shape up how I expected.  Poland expands his army significantly, but in the east, possibly indicating a shift of battle away from the war-ravaged fields of Burgundy.  Spain and Sicily both build in Africa, and war may come between these two Mediterranean powers (what will Israel do if war does indeed come?).  After seven years, no power has been eliminated, but Éire now joins Byzantium at one centre only.

Don't forget your draw votes for the EGP: 4-way, Israel/Poland/Spain/Sicily.

DC455 Aberration - Fall 407 - Zoterik   (Aug 24, 2013, 2:41 am)
I apologize that I cannot give my usual attention to the adjudication this turn; I find myself in a bit of a hurry.  But, welcome back to the game after a month-long hiatus!  Some of you, I see, are still on vacation.  Perhaps as a result of war weariness, we have our first End Game Proposal, for which I would like the votes of all Active players by the end of Fall 408.  In the present, however, Poland makes it a big year, and expands on his lead at the expense of smaller powers.

DC455 Aberration - Spring 1907 - Zoterik   (Jul 23, 2013, 11:02 am)
Gentlemen, my apologies.  I was taken away due to a brief health scare (not me, my grandmother), but all is well now.  Those of you who wrote to me will be relieved to know that no one sent orders after the deadline passed.

The headlines in this season are two NMRS, one with no effect, and one with a potentially-crippling effect.  Slipping under the radar, however, is the emergence of a possible alliance between Poland and Spain, who find themselves cooperating to seize the Celtic Isles.  Let's see where this leads, although at present I'd say this year's winner may well be Sicily.

Due to our vacations, I think it best to have a nice long Fall 1907 turn.  Therefore, I will give you a full month(!) for this turn; deadline is 23 August.  Those of you who played postal diplomacy might feel yourselves at home now.  I will give a reminder when the deadline approaches, and hopefully with the summer winding down we'll have a better game as the summer weather fades away.

Six years in the books, and every nation still exists in one form or another.  Things have really settled down into the great war of alliances, and I don't think that's likely to change anytime soon.  Spring 1907 orders due 21 July at 23:00 GMT.  Nice and long for you all.

Gentlemen, we have a little bit of a problem.  I'm consistently getting orders late.  Yes, some of you like life on the edge, and that's fine for you.  But the fact that I routinely need to ask for orders is concerning:  either interest is fading and deadlines should be made shorter to keep you all thinking, or interest is so great that you are so absorbed in strategies, tactics, and negotiations that you all need more time.  Frankly, I'm leaning towards the former.

So, tell me what you think is best for the game and I'll make the necessary arrangements.  For now, only two centers changed hands, so the winter turn should go rather quickly.  I'll set a short deadline:  adjustments due 14 July at 23:00 GMT.  That's forty-eight hours and twenty-three minutes.

Sorry for a late adjudication, but I was unexpectedly without internet over the weekend, and thus could neither adjudicate nor send a reminder.  And thus why preliminary orders are so nice, but that's the last I'll say on that subject.

My analysis of the alliances appears to be holding steady, while the minor nations pick sides in an effort to stay alive.  The Sword of Damocles hangs over some, whilst larger nations must choose between eliminating neighbors, or bargaining for better positioning.

One unit needs a retreat; the Ukrainian order can be made public.

DC455 Aberration - Winter 1905 - Zoterik   (Jun 30, 2013, 3:56 pm)
It looks to me like we have a bipolar Europe emerging. ??The first bloc that I can see exists largely in the south: ??the SIC nations (Spain, Israel, siCily), either named for their SICkeningly handsome good looks, or for their inability to spell. ??I prefer the latter, and think that "Team [sic]" is a rather catchy name. ??And the second bloc in the north I will simply call "Team ??". ??That's a Greek letter PHi (Poland, Hungary), in case you were curious. ??These gentlemen are clearly mysterious, and probably involved in some shabby dealings, as are most people who identify themselves by a lone character. ??And between them, we have the BUZE nations (Burgundy, Ukraine, byZantium, Eire), for the copious amounts of booze they may soon consume. ??But of course, I'm probably completely wrong and you shouldn't listen to my analyses anyway.

Spring 1906 orders due 5th July at 23:00, but because of the American holiday, I'll adjudicate on the 3rd if I receive all orders marked FINAL.

What a difference a day makes!  Had I adjudicated on time, seven of you would have NMRed.  Seven!  Something will have to change, gentlemen.  Maybe one season I'll adjudicate on time just to keep you all on your toes.

So, back to the events of our season:  the Polish/Hungarian pact seems to be working smoothly, as Hungary turns south while Poland expands at the corners.  Sicily retakes Tunisia, Burgundy retakes Brussels, Israel retakes Georgia, and Spain retakes Languedoc from Burgundy, who had retaken it from Spain last turn.  Overall, plenty of collaborators were either hanged or escaped being hanged, depending on what side they found themselves.

Two units were dislodged but both had only one valid retreat, so ordered.

Winter 1905 adjustments are due 30 June at 23:00 GMT.  That's plenty of time; don't be late!

DC455 Aberration - Spring 1905 - Zoterik   (Jun 17, 2013, 11:09 am)
Well well, what do we have here?  This game one definitely has the impression that the centre cannot hold, as the corner powers continue to make their moves.  Burgundy suffers significantly as two new alliances appear to emerge:  Spain/Sicily and Poland/Hungary.  How Israel and Éire fit into the changing world of geopolitics remains to be seen, while Burgundy, Byzantium, and Ukraine may simply be known as the battlegrounds of the future.

Retreats can be managed simply, so we proceed to the Fall.

DC455 Aberration - Autumn 1904 - Zoterik   (Jun 06, 2013, 6:59 am)
A large number of centres changed hands in the fall, but the net result is zero for most.  The retreats are notable, as Byzantine and Israelite armies collide and disband.  Byzantium is unable to build.  Poland opens up a three-centre lead over the next best competitors, while Israel rises through the ranks.  Whoever imagined difficulties for the Levantine power after that Spring '01 NMR must be kicking themselves now.

DC455 Aberration - Fall 1904 - Zoterik   (Jun 03, 2013, 5:48 am)
After eight major seasons, what little I can divine is this:  Byzantium is on the edge of destruction, but stays alive possibly due to Ukrainian efforts to keep the middle strong.  The Irish and Spanish look like formidable allies, and early-leader syndrome has avoided this game thus far, as Poland continues to expand at will.  I do enjoy being a fly on the wall of Diplomacy games.
