DC464 Fall 1912, Autumn 1912, and FINALE - Zoterik   (Apr 13, 2014, 12:19 pm)
Gentlemen!  I have received four Aye votes for the DIAS proposal, and thus Europe shall have peace!  Germany sits atop the leaderboard at thirteen centres, while Austria and France each end on nine, and Turkey makes do with three.  The end may have come just in the nick of time for Germany, as an Austrian fleet took Constantinople, but this may easily have been little more than a centre swap with Turkey (who took Naples) to get the fleet into the Black Sea.  I suspect that if the game had continued, Austria may have stood the best chance of winning the solo, but as it is, it ends on a hard-fought and well-deserved DIAS.  My congratulations to all of you!

I would also like to express my gratitude for Herman and Wladimir, who stepped into difficult situations as replacements for Russia and Italy, respectively.  Kevin (England) also deserves our appreciation for fighting to the last man after a disastrous 1904.

This game lasted for nearly eight months, which is a long time by the standards of Standard Diplomacy.  Thank you for your patience and your energy, and for the pleasure of your company.  I look forward to seeing you again in future games, whether as player or GM.  I would be very interested to hear the AARs of all players involved in this game, to know about your perspectives and thoughts about the game as it developed, and also if there is any way I might improve as a GM.

DC464 - Summer 1912 - Zoterik   (Apr 07, 2014, 3:45 am)
Austria retreats Galicia - Budapest, shoring up the homeland from further German incursions. As you send in your Fall orders, don't forget the two draw proposals up for vote this year:

Proposal One: 4-way, DIAS
Proposal Two: 3-way, A/F/T (what I can feel comfortable in calling "The Coalition"Wink

When voting, please make some sort of note as to which you vote for.  Unanimous consent is necessary for any proposals to pass.  Fall 1912 deadline is 12 April, 20:00 GMT.

My apologies for the delayed adjudication, gentlemen.  All of you got your orders in on time, but I had a few engagements which precluded my ability to follow through on my responsibilities to you.

There are two End of Game Proposals for your consideration.  The first is a DIAS, 4-way draw.  The second is a 3-way draw for Austria, France, and Turkey.  Please submit your votes alongside your Fall 1912 orders.  Before we go to Fall, however, there is one retreat which needs to be conducted.

Austrian A Galicia can retreat to Budapest or Ukraine.

DC464 - Winter 1911 - Zoterik   (Mar 30, 2014, 12:22 pm)
Following the German disband, the word of the day is ARMIES.  Austria pulls a fleet, while Germany builds two armies and France builds another.  Where the battle may once have been decided by the Atlantic theatre of war, now we set ourselves in for a fierce battle that has long been brewing in the fields of Alsace, but don't forget the battles that may come further afield in the Donbas.

DC464 - Fall 1911 - Zoterik   (Mar 27, 2014, 9:49 am)
Looking at the final map, it looks like we had a fairly quiet year.  But France emerges from a dangerous Spring looking quite well, although a disbanded fleet might give Germany the edge in the Atlantic.  Furthermore, both Austria and France tried to move into the north Atlantic, most likely to outflank Germany, but the resulting bounce leaves both out-of-place.  Germany also captured the Austrian capital, but in doing so may have made himself weak in the east.  Still, Germany grows by one to come within four centres of the solo, but it will be a long and hard fight to that end.

The draw proposal has failed.

Retreating units can be ordered OTB within twenty-four hours from the sending of this message.  Winter 1911 adjustments are due 30 March at 08:00 GMT.

DC464 - Spring 1911 - Zoterik   (Mar 18, 2014, 6:30 pm)
The battle rages on, but another draw proposal has been set forth.  1911 is marked by the apparently collapse of friendly relations between France and Austria, as French troops mysteriously withdraw from the German border, but rightfully so, as Austria sets forth its claim to Tunis.  Germany does not advance into France, but the battle rages on for the spoils of Britain.  On Germany's other front, Tyrolia falls but in such a way that Austria appears to have suffered but a flesh wound.  I presume that you guys know better than I what is going on, because I can't unravel this mystery.

Austrian A Tyrolia can retreat to Piedmont, Trieste, or Venice.

Of the four draw proposals, not a single one earned Yes votes from all four of you, and therefore the game carries on into its second decade of play.  I thought it might end here, but that seems to not be the case.  So, where do we go from here?  Will the powers agree to end the game?  Will Germany make the solo or be pushed back by the trio in opposition?  Will we play another decade?  The answers to these questions and more lie with the four of you.

The end is nigh!

You'd be forgiven for believing that, given that there are FOUR draw proposals to vote on.  Four.  So, we'll organize them nicely and neatly, and you'd better keep to it when you vote.  You do not need to submit a vote for or against all of them; but when voting please do indicate which number proposal you are submitting a vote for.

Number 1: F/G (2-way)
Number 2: A/G (2-way)
Number 3: A/F/G (3-way)

Number 4: A/F/G/T (dias)

In other news, there was actually a deadline which passed, and so we move to Autumn and Winter of 1910.  I need retreats from France and Germany.  I will also need adjustments from France and Turkey.  France took a centre from Germany, who took a centre from Austria, who took a centre from Turkey.  One could almost make a song out of that.

Autumn 1910 retreats due 13 March, 23:00 GMT.
Winter 1910 adjustments due 15 March, 08:00 GMT.
EGP votes will be calculated at each adjudication; final deadline is Winter 1910.

DC464 - Spring 1910 - Zoterik   (Mar 06, 2014, 8:52 am)
Halfway through our tenth year, two centres change hands; Turkey makes a tactical retreat out of Greece, which falls to Austria, and assists Germany in capturing Sevastopol from the same Austrians.  France puts himself in a better position in the Atlantic, but the west looks like it has reached an impasse unless, at least until someone guesses wrong.  Following the Austrian assault on Turkey, Turkey seems to be playing kingmaker, and Germany moves with force past the frontier into territory viewed by Vienna as property of Austria.  The only substantial threat to Germany appears to be the French F North Sea, but I'm rather limited in what I can observe.

One unit was disbanded this turn.  Fall 1910 orders are due 11 March.  I don't believe there are any draw proposals this turn; someone correct me if I'm in error about that.

DC464 - Fall 1909 - Zoterik   (Feb 25, 2014, 12:23 pm)
Play on!  The draw proposal fails again, and we will proceed on our merry way into a future of blood and tears.  What might have appeared to be a united anti-German pact has rapidly and suddenly become a sneak attack by Austria against Turkey.  The Sultan may well find himself out of the money, so to speak, unless he can pull off a stalwart defense and reenlist German assistance against Austria, but at what cost?  Germany itself has taken Liverpool, but lost the North Sea to France.  Who benefits most from the exchange of SC for tactical position will be determined in the years to come.

Three units are dislodged, and two need an order on where to go.  Autumn and Winter can happen simultaneously again, but the deadline for the former is 27 February, and for the latter is 28 February.

DC464 Spring 1909 - Zoterik   (Feb 18, 2014, 1:52 am)
There has been a dramatic de-escalation of the conflict in the Balkans.  Judging by the German orders, something was afoot, but Turkey backed out and chose the anti-German-solo effort.  Not much moves, although Germany is able to convoy an army to Scotland for use in pacifying the whole of Britain.  However, things largely seem to have slowed down, and we have a draw proposal to concern ourselves with.

The EoG Proposal in question is a DIAS, 4-way draw.  As usual, to pass it is required that all active players vote yes.  The deadline for this proposal is Winter 1909, but if I receive four "aye" votes before then I'll halt the game immediately.  Aside from that, we'll continue as usual, and that includes retreats.  We have one retreat needed from Germany for his A Galicia, due within twenty-four hours.

DC 464 Fall 1908 - Zoterik   (Feb 10, 2014, 12:58 pm)
This is the season of risky moves, or so it seems.  France leaves London, and Germany leaves Moscow, but both moves are followed up by unsupported and unopposed moves to complete the elimination of England and Russia.  A big thank you to Kevin and Herman for sticking it out to the end after finding themselves in difficult situations.  But this is the turn that Germany opens up a big three-centre lead over the best contender, combining the gain of Moscow with the build he couldn't use last time.  The Germans have strength in Ukraine and will definitely be involved in the southern conflict, but on what side?  Does Turkey have a friend?  In the west, the lines of conflict between Germany and France remain the same as they have been for some time, and we will see if Germany can gain the advantage with the fleet in Norwegian Sea.  Is this the beginning of a solo bid?  Too early to tell, I suspect, but Germany is the player to watch.

Bad news for the one-centre powers this turn.  Both face elimination as their capitals are now occupied.  England was disbanded from London after the French invasion, and with no place to retreat the fate of the English now rests in France abandoning London in the fall.  On the other side of Europe, Moscow falls to the Germans.  Russia does get a retreat, but again existence is in the hands of the occupiers.  In other news, Austria may have gained the upper hand over Turkey by taking Sevastopol, while France and Germany continued to stalemate along the Maginot Line.

Aside from the occasional skirmishes between Austria and Germany, this game appears to be the tale of two halves, with both sides of the two major conflicts trying to get an upper hand while England and Russia linger on.  Is elimination in the cards for either of them, or will they have a role to play in deciding who triumphs?  Spring 1908 orders due 03 February.

Did no one tell me that this is a no-press Gunboat game?  My request for preliminary orders was met by precisely that, prelims from everyone.  Then no one bothered to change them at all, which makes me wonder if you guys figured out your schemes in advance, or simply don't actually do any negotiating.  Either way, we advance through Fall 1907 with preliminary orders all around.  Feeling lucky, punks?

There was considerably activity in the Balkans, but the net result is zero as both Austria and Turkey took one and lost another.  Turkey does still get a build to show for the fight, however.  Sevastopol was left open again, but this time Russia went north for the imperial capital, but was held off by the neo-Teutonic knights.  Indeed, the biggest gains this year are German, adding two centers, including Munich once again, although with only Berlin open for a build, one will be kept in his back pocket for later use.  If ever.  I had one of those once; it felt good at first but marked the beginning of my end in that particular game.  And England lingers while France and Germany fight over gets what England has already lost.

I need one retreat from Austria.  As it only affects the Austrian adjustments, I have no qualms about releasing adjustments now for those who don't want to wait until after the retreat comes in.

DC464 -- Spring 1907 - Zoterik   (Jan 20, 2014, 12:05 pm)
Looking at the map, it seems like most of the action takes place in the Balkans.  Both Austria and Turkey make progress, albeit progress with a loss.  Which, if either, power benefits the most from this swap remains to be seen.  Russia, looking to regain some of his lost territory, attacks the only center which is occupied.  Neither of the other two was even protected.  In the west, both France and Germany play for positioning and the fight to come.  France was offered Ruhr but did not take it, while Germany may now have a position of strength on Edinburgh, despite still lacking Munich.  One unit was dislodged, but as the A Serbia had but one valid retreat, it was automatically ordered.

I feel better about the pace of this game after a slow beginning, and let's keep it rolling!  Remember that preliminary orders make both you and me happier, not least because they give me the ability to check for seriously-misordered units, but I think none of you have encountered that problem so far.

Fall 1907 orders due 25 January, 08:00 GMT.

DC464 Winter 1906 - Zoterik   (Jan 14, 2014, 1:29 pm)
Fleets are the order of the day, and the two main conflicts, France-Germany and Austria-Turkey will be decided by sea power. And England is but a minor player! The days of the Royal Navy are long gone, and any game that involves a third Austrian fleet is definitely out-of-the-ordinary.  I look forward to what might come of it all.

Spring 1907 orders are due Monday, 20 January. This is due to a requested extension, and my own travels.

Build F Trieste

France:
