Pic of new home page on Nokia phone - bielf11   (Apr 15, 2010, 5:13 am)
Just saw that when I scroll over the image I just posted on the Forum it shows an expanded view of it as expected, but for some reason the expanded view of the image is cut off at the top by the upper frame of this Forum.

Is that the way this is supposed to work or should the expanded image sit in front of the frames so it's fully visible?

With newer postings the posting and the image will scroll down in the frame and the problem is solved of course, so not a big thing. Just a peculiarity.

Ok, I changed the overflow so the image should now expand over frames around it. Looks nice on the phone!

Tested the image again and now it works as expected, flowing over the frames.
Much better. Thx

Have included a screen snapshot of the new DC home page on my N97s Nokia browser. Nokia browser shows site correctly when tilting the phone.
Sadly the Opera browser has some difficulties positioning the page when tilting the phone (shows top right corner instead of top left as usual).

Nice job!

Problem changing Rows per Page in Forum - bielf11   (Apr 15, 2010, 2:02 am)
When I go into the Help & Suggestions section of the Forum, I get 25 rows per page and at the bottom an option to change that to 50 or more. If I change it to another number, a new page is loaded with the correct number of rows per page but not the page I was on. Instead it's the deafult page that comes up when you click on Community. And when I go back to Help & Suggestions the number of rows per page is back to 25.

Rows Per Page should work ok now, and it should keep your setting for the duration of your visit. Pls retest to make sure it works as it should!

Works fine now. Rows per page is sticky when switching between forums.Just one minor thing: when 100 rows is selected the field showing the number has only room for 2 digits and comes up as 10. When you click on it, it shows 100.

Yeah, I agree with making it all anonymous and qualitative. I'm just throwing ideas out there. It would be nice though, as a GM, to gain feedback after a game to improve or whatever.

Re: Suggestions - AceRimmer   (Mar 08, 2010, 1:59 pm)
I like the feedback idea. Giving ideas to a GM on how to run a game better is definitely worthwhile. I think the club could have a role in this by promoting player feedback. Perhaps by providing a generic feedback form to GMs, which the GMs could then forward to players at the end of a game (but who'd design the form?). Or the club could contribute by having an online form (even anonymous drop box) where players are encouraged to leave comments for the GM. But I think the feedback should be strictly for the GM to read and learn from.

On numerical ratings, I agree with Mike... only more so. I wouldn't even want games rated. It is also my own experience that 1-to-5 ratings are minimally helpful. Numbers give a score but no practical advice for improvement. On evaluations, I always skip the numbers and read written comments where available. Again: I'd emphasize feedback over rating.

If there is a concern that a GM is bad -- really bad -- then I imagine players should notify the club Moderators. Let them deal with it.

I think I lean toward #2 personally. #1 has the potential to be discouraging and personal. GM's volunteer their time, so if a GM is new and trying it out, the last thing he would need is to get some flame ratings permanently attached to his profile for what might be a rocky first game.

Rating the game on the other hand is a bit more disconnected, and then you could have a "games list by most enjoyed game" sort of thing. This would allow GMs to possibly have a bad game, but then on the next game get better and have some really great games.

The drawback to #2 is it would open up the door for GMs to lobby their players to give them great ratings so that they could top this or that chart.

As we're working on a new message board system to ditch this clunky phpbb stuff, features like this could be tied in nicely w the site going forward... so if you have ideas bring'em up!

Hey everyone,

I was just thinking about some additional features that could be added to the site. Just wanted to see what people thought of these.

1) I think it would be cool to have a "rate your GM" or some kind of survey thing after a game is finished where people can give feedback to their GM and the site on ways the GM can make the game run better, and then keep track of each GM's scores or something to see who the best GMs are.

2) another survey, "rate your game experience" I think this would be helpful so the moderators and GMs can see how new players or veterans are enjoying their game experiences. They can write how much negotiating went on, or whatever they want.

Again, I just think these would be good additions to the site to give people more feedback on how games are running. Thanks.

Re: Problem with RealPolitik on Win 7 - 64bit - z93blom   (Feb 10, 2010, 1:35 am)
I managed a workaround - install RP in another directory - not C:\Program Files (x86). The problem probably involves read-write access to the folder in which the program is installed.

Problem with RealPolitik on Win 7 - 64bit - z93blom   (Feb 08, 2010, 3:22 pm)
Hi!

Just got an new computer at work, and its a 64 bit machine running Windows 7 64-bit.

Realpolitik doesn't appear to run correctly on this machine, and I was wondering if there are any other people out there running Realpolitik on such a machine, and if they are running into the same problems?

The program starts, shows up in the task bar, but the main window never appears.

/Fredrik

Realpolitik for Macs? - FuzzyLogic   (Sep 12, 2009, 9:51 pm)
Many people ask me if there is a Realpolitik for Macs. The easy answer is - yes - it's in the downloads section. But I am not a Mac-guy, and so I can never provide any insight regarding if this file we have works, or how to install it, or how to use it on a Mac.

If anyone does this or is familiar w how to do so, please speak up so that we can possibly gather some Mac-experts who could help other Mac-Dip-newbies with their questions...

Thanks!

This is Mike, your resident tech and all-around nice guy... We apologize for the flood of auto-replies that went out yesterday! The problem has been fixed. This is all somewhat new ground for us to explore, as we are looking at some options to enhance communication w/in the site.

Please share feedback on how we can make the Message Board in general more useful and practical, or at least what we could do to make Diplomacy easier for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks!

Request for a private game - FuzzyLogic   (Oct 27, 2008, 10:48 pm)
Hi Tom,
Ok, so how it generally works... is a GM (wonderfully giving soul) steps up and offers to run a game. We put it up on the open games page, and then players join it as they see fit. Once the game is full, it starts.

It is rarely done the other way around, where 10 players need a GM... I would say you'd have to find one who wants to run it! We have done private games before, where a group of friends signs up, but they've always had a GM already w/in the group, so we could open the game right away.

So - Do you want to run a 9-player game for the other 9 then? Or would someone in your group?

Or, post away in the Open Games forum, and see if you can find someone out there who's been interested to GM an American Empire game. (any takers out there?)

Or one from your group run it, and then we'll easily find 1 more to play.

I just played in that one Trout ran, and got killed. Was a fun variant tho, definitely one to try if you haven't already.

Ten players? - former.trout   (Oct 24, 2008, 8:06 am)
Hi Tom,

Seven players is usually the amount you need for a standard game. Were you planning on playing a variant? Not sure how else you'll be able to fit ten players into a game.

If it's a standard game you're looking for, I'm sure someone can oblige you and GM. A variant game is a little different however - sometimes its harder to find a GM for those.

Request for a private game - FuzzyLogic   (Oct 23, 2008, 11:49 pm)
Hi Tom,
What do you mean by a private game? Do you have a GM already? If so, we just need to find out who, and set them up as a GM, and get your game created. The whole process takes about 5 min, but just need to know a bit more. Who's the GM?

Request for a private game -    (Oct 22, 2008, 4:55 pm)
Hi there. New here but not new to pbem dip. Great site by the way!

So I saw an earlier post asking for a private game with a GM and you were very welcoming, and I am hoping you will be able to do the same for us.

We are looking for a private game, with a GM. We have ten players (nine have registered in the last few days) and we are eager to play the Empire variant (the American one).

Can anyone help us? Thanks in advance, and again, kudos on a fantastic site.

Yours, Tom

Re: Cleaning up the Player Roster - FuzzyLogic   (Apr 04, 2008, 12:54 pm)

Is there a way to either subdivide the list or eliminate players who signed up but never played and haven’t logged in recently.

Yeah the player list does load a bit slow as the number of players grows.
Three options...

- Purge players who sign up but never play a game. (greatest speed improvement)
- Change the player list to only show players who have played a game. (moderate speed improvement)
- Remove some of the columns from the player list. (speed improvement at the cost of some information)

Server - FuzzyLogic   (Sep 19, 2007, 1:10 pm)
It runs on my personal sims-family.net server.

However we have looked into hosting. "Host it for you" places are typically not going to work for us, since we need the ability to set up mailboxes for the forums, pop, smtp, plus php and mysql for the database. They're also a pain to use, as I'm making changes all the time, so having access to all the php settings and controls is important. Also having the database stored locally is important as we're always tweaking the data structure to add new features.

Then the cheaper ones end up tacking on ads.

Preferred solution is to get into a datacenter... Then we get guaranteed bandwidth and uptime, and have negotiated down to about $100/mo but that's still a chunk of money to put out.

If people have good revenue-building ideas out there that would not be impacting to the function of the site, not encumber the users, yet offset some of that cost, let me know.

Current Game Deadlines - former.trout   (Sep 15, 2007, 8:29 pm)
Hi guys,

Just had a thought tonight. Maybe we could have a field on the active game page for the GM to write down the current game turn and deadline. That might help the players a little.

Minor detail - thought I might as well bring it up though.
