DC501 Russia EOG - cryhavoc   (Feb 14, 2015, 1:44 pm)
Just thinking about this now. Thanks to all for a good game. Patrick, Scott, Brian, I enjoyed working with you even if there was heartburn at times! Tim, great job on the win. You took advantage of nearly every opportunity you had and created many of those yourself! No hard feelings, although I won't be as trusting of you if we run into each other in another game. Thanks as well to Bryan for all of his efforts on our behalf.
I think the most important factor in this game was Peter, who was eliminated relatively early on. Sometimes you decide to play crazy and sometimes that works. This time, it didn't work, for Peter or for me. I don't claim that I played great but Peter's aggressiveness towards me really hampered my start.
Once Peter was gone, Tim did a great job keeping Brian and me at each other. I did my best to work with Tim sometimes but was hampered by my position and the fact that I kept believing him. Seriously, Tim is a very good liar and it worked out well for him in this game! Not so well for me, though.
Our grand alliance, once we got it together, had many cracks in it: mostly between Patrick and Scott. I understand why they did not trust each other but if they had been able to, I still maintain that we would have been able to salvage a 4-way draw. Brian, you did make it to the end of the game alive but if Italy hadn't won the way he did, I doubt I would have been able to keep you alive.
All in all, a fun game and a loong game. Thanks to all of you and best of luck in your current and future games.
Wesley

First of all, thank you Bryan for the very well run game. GM's are everything to having a good game.
The game started off pretty normal. Great talks with Austria and Turkey and Russia. Austria and I settled on Key Lepanto to attack Turkey. We exchanged many letters working out the details. Everyone in the region was very involved. I developed a good relationship with each power in the corner and looked for a way to get them all suspicious of one another. It worked out pretty well as Turkey went to ARM and Austria to RUM while I slid into TRI.
I talked a little to France and Germany....tossed around Central Alliance ideas and such..France and I agreed to just lave one another alone. I am not sure what happened over ENG but England jumped in there and I was happy as it guaranteed that I would not have to worry about France any time soon. Germany's NMR on the first turn was very critical as it put him behind early on and he was in recovery for several turns. This is what started that never ending F/G war.
My original orders for F01 were to continue with Key Lepanto but Turkey and I were really working well together. Russia was panicked and Austria was just playing the strategy we discussed. Getting Turkey and Austria working against Russia afforded me to stab my ally and go for 3 builds as Italy. The key being that there would be a ton of armies in place to for I/T alliance against Russia. Sorry Peter, I did want to do the Lepanto but what Turkey came up with was too good top pass up.
The next 2 years we took taking out the last of Austria, I think I was working with Russia here a little to get Austria out. Germany really smashed France in 03 and 04. We were the board leaders at the time. I sent two fleets west to try and get into MAO. I thought that if i could get MAO at this point I was going to solo. The west was SO disorganized with the NMRs and the missing fleets that I could take my time and wait for the invitation to bring the fleets over. France asked and I accepted and I got MAO. This was the crucial turn for me....with security in the west I could then push everything east. In one turn I grabbed WAR and VIE from Russia, BUL from Turkey and put France in MAR. Taking WAR from Russia was my mistake....that did not need to happen. He was frustrated about what was going on in the west and could see that I was on my way to wining so he offered to help me win. I should have left him alone and concentrated on Turkey and containing Germany.
It was 05 When France built F MAR and I think that was when trouble started. I was not happy with that so I attacked. I was flipping back and forth between France and Germany to keep that fire burning and it worked for a long time.
Russia recovered from my stab and was kicking me out of his lands and he got things worked out with Turkey and I was being beaten back pretty good. 07-08 I just hung out to see what would happen with F/G as France and I settled our differences and I was completely out of the MED. I went back to attacking the Turk, Brian was irate with the west and he offered to help me win with the promise that I see that he at least survived the game. I agreed to leave him with 2 or 3 centers because I thought I could still win and not have them.
It was 11 that I turned on France and went after the wide open Iberia. All his fleets were north and I got a good jump on him. I was snaking my way up though to Prussia to attack Russia and working with Germany again so I was left alone to take those crucial spots. Again F/G fighting allowed me free reign to move into some spots I should not have been allowed in to.
There was point where I had a 50/50 guess over how to attack WAR to win the game and picked wrong. I think that was in 12....it was before France let me into MAO i know that. I was stopped after guessing wrong and was ready to negotiate what the draw would be. Then I got into MAO which let me into MAR and maintain my hold on Iberia. That was pretty much the end of the game there.
Brian mentioned in his EOG that he fed me the plans everyone was making...a lot of them were obvious. But there were two orders that I HAD to know to get this one over, one was a single fleet move on the north...i do not remember the details and the other was how he was going to order one of his armies. Everything else he told me was inconsequential.
My style in this game was very different than usual, it was very self serving. I do not give out a lot of help in the way of supporting anyone into centers. I also kinda dictated what I was going to do and pressed people into helping me with the promise of future help that did not always come to fruition or if it did, it was not to the level they expected. But, no one punished me for that behavior. Thw war between F/G could not be settled and that is where I found my greatest advantage.
I regret a little stabbing Austria right out of the gate. That was harsh. I also felt bad for Turkey...those NMR's in the west hurt him very badly...the balance shifted so drastically that he was powerless to do anything about it. I did not hear much from England during the game...well during the game while he still had units on the board anyway.
Sorry if I skipped over anything...this was a LONG game and so much happened with the back and forth. I save e-mails for a game and this one was well over 650 e-mails....and that does not include the ones I sent. I really enjoyed working with each of you. It was a well fought game, one that I will not forget.
thanks,TimItaly 501

DC501 - Fall 1916 - briandiffell   (Feb 09, 2015, 9:38 pm)
I decided to finally write an EOG for this game, since it's already fading
in my mind some. Anyone who's played with me knows I write lengthy NMRs,
so I apologize in advance.
I haven't decided whether to love or hate Tim's style of play in this
game. On the one hand it was the most ruthless, conniving, duplicitous,
self-serving, dissembling, and avaricious style of play I've ever seen. On
the other hand, what's not to love about being able to do all of that and
still win?
Assisting Tim was the bumbling nature of his opponents. I put myself in
that category on a few occasions this game, but I think everyone but Tim
had at least one or two totally bonehead moves, misorders, or NMRs, which
he skilfully exploited.
The game started off as one would expect. Playing Turkey, I was talking
to Austria (Peter), Russia (Wesley), and Italy (Tim, of course). I was an
early fan of working closely with Tim and settled on him as a partner when
I realized some of the other neighbors were forwarding emails (which I
generally consider very bad form). I think some of this was just
inexperience and it appeared to stop when Tim let them know it was frowned
upon. Still, it served as a reminder that Tim was the experienced hand who
talked like a good long-term partner.
Tim opened the game by absolutely leveling Austria. I mean, lowering the
boom and just driving it home. He claims he initially wanted to Lepanto
but I convinced him otherwise somehow. I'll let him address that if he
does an EOG. But the result was devastating. I don't know that I've ever
seen Italy take Bud in 01 before. Ouch. I moved on Sev and the makings of
a strong IT were in place.
Some things about Tim's play style began to worry me, however. He would
send messages implying a level of teamwork and generosity, and in the very
same season would subtly shift the terms of the dialogue to a less
attractive deal. Meanwhile he was skilfully playing the neighbors off each
other, ensuring that I was pounding on Russia while he was laying his trap
for me. I really lost it in Spring 03 when he moved to Ion in direct
contradiction of a promise he'd made. I attempted mend things with
Austria, but then Peter NMR'd on the move we had set up and was eliminated.
This brings me to an infuriating factor of this game. So many NMRs. All
the time. Just when a plan was ready to take off, an NMR by a key player
would kill it in the cradle. In fact I think the early NMRs in the west
really contributed to Tim's ability to take control of the game. There
just seemed to be this vacuum in the west.
At any rate, I was forced back to Tim by a series of events. Tim
convinced me that Russia and Germany were preparing to win, and it was up
to us to stop them. That sounded fine to me, since I was already fighting
Russia and had no way of impacting Germany. And Germany appeared to be
dominating France, so why not? But then Tim stabbed me hard, I believe in
05 and I think that's about the time when we finally started to rally an
anti-Italy coalition. It required Germany and Russia and France to all
disengage each other and me to disengage from Russia. It actually went
pretty smoothly in those first turns.
If you'd had to guess at this moment, you'd have said, "Surely this
coalition of four other players would be able to stop a nine-center Italy
from taking the game!" But, no, you would be wrong. A series of
disastrous decisions, NMRs, misorders, and savvy play by Tim over the next
TEN GAME YEARS ensured we would all lose.
Effectively, Tim somehow played Germany (Patrick) and France (Scott)
against each other so effectively that the two of them stabbed each other
repeatedly. Meanwhile I was starting to get strangled by the Italian jaws
of death and kept screaming at everybody to keep up pressure in the West
before I croaked. Russia (Wesley) played nothing but honest after we
decided to work together, but we were no match for the insanity of France
and Germany beating each other up while Italy just grew and grew.
At one point in the 07 range, something resembling a stalemate line began
to appear. It had a couple of small cracks but I was becoming convinced a
draw was possible Then I blew it my misordering a key unit. Italy broke
me and I knew I was about to get rolled up and eliminated. I basically
rejoined Tim's side in order to get a survival for the next several years.
He was just sending me orders to send to the GM, which I did without even
looking at the map for about three game years.
At that point it was just a matter of time, but it was a matter of a
really long time. Except for some more NMRs (including my first ever NMR
in DC), the game ground along as Tim chipped away toward 18. Tim actually
managed to stab me AGAIN by capturing one of the two centers he promised me
I could keep as a guarantee of survival. But I still stuck with him before
finally becoming convinced I was expendable and moving back into Turkey
when he wasn't paying attention.
Being back on the anti-Italy group list, I then -- I'm not too proud to
say -- fed Tim information for the rest of the game to guarantee my
survival, basically playing a double agent with my one measly unit until
this game could, mercifully, come to an end.
Tim deserves credit for winning the game, though he did so by effectively
employing the tactics of a confidence man. I give Wesley, my Russian
neighbor, a ton of credit for doing everything he could do hold our
coalition together. I send a friendly EOG bag of coal to Patrick and Scott
for failing to put aside their differences until it was too late, and for
tossing in a couple of absolutely ill-timed NMRs that gave Italy the edge
he needed to dominate the board.
I hope others post EOGs as well.
Brian

to us to stop them.

I'll be honest with you all - he has had PLENTY of chances to solo and he's screwed  upevery one of them - which is why he bounces between 16 and 17 and just can't seem to
seal the deal.  IOW - if it were sex he'd be messin with the panties for hours.
Does he have a chance at a solo?  yeah, he has a chance but I think each of us has NMR'dat least once so ya never know what can happen.  Yes, he chances are also better than theyhave been - but we aren't done yet and the tables can still turn.  I don't see the solo as aforgone conclusion.  At least not just yet.
As Patrick said - vote for the DIAS and it's done and you can WB your brains out.

I do agree with Tim. I would like a share in a draw but there is no way to get that at this point. I am more than willing to play a game out but we have played out and he's won.

huh? Are you actually paying more attention to the game now than you did when you were still playing? It's over. I am really not trying to be a jerk here, it may sound that way but I am only trying to get this game over as soon as possible.

No, do not vote for the Italian. Is this how he wins all of his other games - by backstabbing everyone and then by the time they realize how he plays and turn on him, he asks them to let him win?

I believe I have this one gentlemen. I'll be in a position to take SMY in the fall. I have options on LVP, BRE, LON, BEL and there is no combination of moves out there that can take a currently held center of mine. Depending on what Russia disbands the options could grow to WAR and NWY.
Please vote for the solo and let's save a few weeks time playing it out.

Oh - and on another note -
Peter - backstabbing everyone is actually a legitimate style of playing this game.Granted once the word gets out he won't get much traction, but there are those whoplay that way anyway.
