DC201 (Viking) - Norge EGS - deathblade_penguin   (Feb 12, 2009, 4:11 am)
First of all I will also thank Frank for a fantastically GM'd game. Frank would easily rate as one of the best GMs I have enountered, and i would consider him on par with Christine Stoy. Thankyou for the enjoyment.

I have to confess I did not enjoy the ganme play in this game and it was mainly to do with the players. I didn't mind the scorched earth rules and I do like the viking map.

Slavics - Kurt. I considered Kurt my true and solid ally in this game. Even though he grew big at the start of the game, I suspected that he would face problems with ERE and the communication with Kurt is excellent. My emails always seem to go answered and i enjoyed working with him. There were rumours in the last few turns that Kurt was about to stab me for a northern centre (hence my last 2 builds were quite defensive) but i dont think Kurt would have done so. We were making plans to cut Sweden out (sorry Doug - i did lie to you about that). I was more than happy that Kurt was in the draw.

Sweden - Jack. Jack was a good ally, right up to a point... I enjoyed the strategies that Jack would come up with and with Jack and Kurt we co-ordinateed a great alliance in the north. However there was a point at mid game where Jack seem to stab 'doug/burgundy' just because he got bored. ERE then moved back on Sweden but it was too late for me. Twice Sweden attempted to break through in the north (both times unsuccesfully) and i had to fight him back. He then also stopped communicating near the end (with perfectly reasonable explanation though), which meant that I was definately onboard with Kurt's plan to wipe him out.

France - Trout. Put simply, Trout was a target at the start of the game by Burgundy. I had no interest in attacking Trout so I just let him burn what he wanted.

Arabs - Andy. Possible the worst player I have encountered. Andy did not answer a single email of mine in the first year, basically resulting in my walking into one of his Home centres. I only then heard about him through ERE. Andy, I think it was very poor play not to negiotate with such a close neighbour.

Burgundy - Lee. The one thing I like about Lee is that he communicates. He emails and writes all the time. The one thing i hate about Lee is that he has no trust. He was constantly movign armies back and forth along my border - this eventually led to me organising as many people as I could to attack Lee. HE wasn't helping us stop ERE, he was just being a pain in the way.

Burgundy - Doug. I think Doug played an excellent 'replacement' game. He came out, was able to read the board and quickly joined the status quo to stop ERE going for his solo. More importantly - he was willing to create a DMZ so that I could move my fleets into the med and help against ERE (something that Lee would not allow). In some ways, I think Doug was entitled to be included in the draw, but he was willing not to be - so who can complain with that. Doug - i was counting your SC, (at end game I knew I needed 11 to win.. and I could only take 5 off you instead of the needed 8.. so no stab.. However if i ever worked out how to get those 11, i was going for the win!)

Danmark - Kai. My first target. Jackson was too quiet and my first big threat to securing a corner for myself. I just moved to eliminate hjim as quickly as possible.

ERE - Jorge. Jorge had an excellent start to the game, and seemed to grow very quickly. He also seemed to have control over the arabs who just let Jorge take the entire southern corner. I viewed Jorge a threat after his first moves. I spent countless emails to Jorge, assuring him that i was working for a 2 way draw for us, whilst at the same time trying to organise Burgundy, Sweden and Slavs against him. (admittedly Doug took on this role in the latter half of the game). Eventually I hit a wall where I had to let Jorge know I was not going to stab Burgundy if Burgundy was moving on ERE. Jorge said very clearly at the time that if i did, we would never get the 2 way draw - and he was right. Thanks for a good game Jorge, you are always an excellent opponent.

I also want to offer up tribute for Frank's excellent game. He seemed to repeatedly go the extra mile to make sure everything was being done correctly and styaing in contact with the players. I definitely am looking forward to his next game!

I almost fell victim to my initial success. In the first year my gains far exceded my expectations and I ended up over-extended, exposed, and bearing a big red target on my back. After a retreat and steady hemmorhage of SC's I managed to stop just short of defeat with an alliance with Norge and Svierge (among others). Norge was especially instrumental in bringing the Swedes around and keeping them from finishing me off. ERE's being close to victory played a very persuasive role too. Thanks for the great game everyone. I hate to see it end when I was just starting to expand again but definitely am happy with the results. Jorge was a great opponent and ally at the end and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in my upcoming games.

I liked the Viking theme and the scorched earth was an interesting variant to the variant. It was a very powerful tool, though, and I'm not sure yet how I feel about it's ability to influence the game. I was able to use it to effectively buy time with units behind enemy lines and stop an advance that was eroding what territory I had left.

Winter 962:
-------------------
EasternRomanEmpire:
Remove F Cherson Bight
Remove A Trebizond

SlavicNations:
Build A Przemysl
Build A Arkhangelsk
Build A Vladimir

Norge:
Build F Hafrsfjord
Build A Nidaros

Sverige:
Build A Birka

And all votes are in for the Endgame proposals.
Again voted down were the following proposals:
1) 2-way Draw ERE/NOR
2) DIAS
but finally all Powers agreed on this proposal:
3) 3-way Draw ERE/NOR/SLAV

And thus after 12 years of war this Viking game ends
with a joint victory for the Romans (18 SC), the Norse (15 SC) and the Slavs (11 SC). A big hand for the Slavs who seemed doomed several years earlier but managed a great comeback due to a late alliance with the Romans.
A large number of SC were burned down and destroyed forever: only 68 are left of the original 85 SC. So a minimum of 26 was still required for a Solo. It was long clear that it would be unlikely for one Power to get this many SC. The Romans came closest with in 958 a total of 22 SC.
Other survivors worth certainly mentioning are Burgundy (13 SC) and Sverige (11 SC).
Powers that were eliminated during all these years: the ArabCaliphates, Danmark, France, and the Independents.

I'm definitely going to miss the pushing and shoving to escape the deadlocks on the map. As well as the player comments on the side. Thanks everyone for making this game so much fun. Special thanks for Doug for stepping in in 957 to save Burgundy.

I also enjoyed the combination of Viking with the Scorched Earth rules although I think the Scorched Earth rules could use some tweaking to make them more interesting. Would love to hear your feedback: on the fun we had in this game as well as suggestions to improve its technical aspects.
And with enough positive feedback I might start another Viking but this time without the Scorched Earth rules.

Frank

DC201 (Viking) - Fall 962 adjudication - bielf11   (Feb 06, 2009, 6:58 pm)
Fall 962: Winter is near and even on the island of Palermo the Norse Fleet starts to feel a chill.
Wait a minute! Since when are the Norse bothered with a bit of cold wind, especially in the heart of the Mediterranean? That would be a first. Hmm, perhaps it's then the advancing Roman fleets that gave them the shivers.
So guess what the Norse did? Like anyone else would do: warm themselves at a cozy fire of Palermo wood ! Until the Roman fleet from the Libyan Sea with support from the neighbouring Romans on the island of Syracuse, finish any Norse they can find.

But that's not the only thing worth mentioning. For the first time in years there seems to be a change, or at least a little shift, in the balance of Powers.
Nowhere along the Praha, Graz and Venezia borders has fighting erupted between Romans and Burgundians. Is this just clever deployment of the Burgundian units or could this be a sign of an upcoming truce? The attack on Pisa and Tyrrhenian Sea however seem to contradict this. A surprise is further east in the Roman empire that the Slavs take Kaffa from the Romans. Seems to contradict the pact the Slavs and Romans demonstrate in Breslau to keep it out of the hands of the Swedes. Thus the Slavs can deploy their units to force the Swedes out of Gdansk. The Swedes are successful against Slavs elsewhere though: they force the Slavs out of Karelia. Almost a one for one trade except that Gdansk is a SC whereas Karelia is not.

Retreats are required for 3 Powers at the end of Fall 962. See below.

Genuine Question

will the person(s) voting no to the end game proposals consider emailing me so we can discuss why?

I'm happy to end this game, in a manner that makes all happy - or at least i'd lke to know why we are being forced to continue on...

DC201 (Viking) - Spring 962 adjudication (dc201) deathblade_penguin Feb 01, 02:57 am
Genuine Question

will the person(s) voting no to the end game proposals consider emailing me so we can discuss why?

I'm happy to end this game, in a manner that makes all happy - or at least i'd lke to know why we are being forced to continue on...

No less than 4 dislodged units including one that had to be disbanded!
Only Norge seems to get away unscathed. That is, at first glance.

Spring 961: 3 Draw proposals were on the table.
All proposals received votes, no abstains, and these are the results:
1) DIAS - Voted down
2) 2-DRAW ERE and SLAV - Voted down
3) 2-DRAW ERE and NOR - Voted down
So we continue our quest for the Solo, I guess.

This Spring showed heavy fighting, again, between ERE and BUR on their borders. ERE successfully defends Venezia which leads to a self-induced failing chain of orders for BUR as these were dependent on the taking of VEN. Another success for ERE in Praha as it convincingly fended off a Swedish attack. In the Eastern Mediterranean there is a stand-off between ERE and the BUR/NOR alliance but in the western part of it the alliance is inching closer to the ERE troops.
In the far East meanwhile, after years of war between the Slavs and the Romans, both armies seem to have decided that it would be wiser to deploy their units elsewhere than have them tied up in a stalemate over Burta, Khazar Empire, Vladimir, and Cumaniya.
In Scandinavia the Norse and the Swedes have lined up their units along their borders - ready for a major war? If so, then the approaching Slavs will definitely cause the Swedes some headaches.
No retreats.

DC201 (Viking) - Spring Draw proposals - bielf11   (Jan 09, 2009, 6:40 am)
Hi everyone,

I had forgotten to mention that we have 3 Draw proposals for Spring to vote on:

1) DIAS: many of you already voted on this with the Winter orders;
2) 2-party Draw between ERE and SLAV;
3) 2-party Draw between ERE and Norge.

This is also the sequence in which they were presented so if more than one is agreed on, the first on the list will be used.
Plenty of choices. Deadline for these is the Spring 961 deadline.

The DIAS was again voted down for Fall 960.
So we'll just continue with the power struggles.

Steve,

Why would I ever agree to a DIAS after manipulating Sweden and
stabbing him in order to get a solo?

DC201 (Viking) - Spring 960 adjudication - bielf11   (Dec 29, 2008, 11:53 pm)
Spring 960: the Romans did it again. Fires light up the Cagliari skies.
And the Burgundians find another SC they just conquered destroyed by the defeated and disbanded Roman navy.
Worse, the Romans also take Pisa at the cost of the Burgundese army. But since Pisa was already set on fire earlier, there is little harm the Romans can do. Or perhaps not?
And it won't come as a surprise that the majority of the fighting is between Burgundian and Roman forces. What may be a surprise is that the, what now seems to be former, ally of the Romans, Sweden loses its army in Ruthenia to a joint Roman attack from Cumania with support from Transylvania.
And thus the Romans are on their own again.

No retreats required so we're at the start of Fall 960.
Another DIAS was proposed, so please submit your votes with the Fall 960 orders.
Deadline for Fall 960 orders is Monday Jan 5 at 23:00 GMT.

Maps and RealPolitik files are attached. As usual the Viking.MAP and Viking.BMP go into the RP Viking Variants folder.

Have a great New Years Eve everyone. Enjoy the champagne but be careful with the artillery.

It's because PRZ is a Slavic Home SC and technically Sweden should not be allowed to build there.

Please note that for some reason RealPolitik removed the army Sweden just built in Przemysl.
It allows me to build it there but when I choose Resolve and the Commit, the unit is gone.
While I try to resolve this, please keep in mind that the unit is actually there.

The Winter 959 adjustments:

SlavicNations: Build A Vitebsk
Sverige: Build A Przemysl

Then the vote for a DIAS: after having received all votes, it appears the proposal was VOTED DOWN.
So, sadly Wink, we have to continue a while longer.

Everyone was okay with the dates so deadline for Spring 960 orders is Monday Dec 29, at 23:00 GMT.
And a note to everyone: since we started I have had to remind several players that their orders were overdue. I like to get the adjudications out as per the deadline. I don't mind adjudicating a few hours later to avoid an impact on gameplay, but at the same time I'd like to ask everyone to watch those deadlines more carefully.
