PREV  Spring 1914 Adjudication:  NEXT

From the Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce...

PEACE, n. In international affairs, a period of cheating between two periods of fighting.

WAR, n. A by-product of the arts of peace. The most menacing political condition is a period of international amity... "In time of peace prepare for war" has a deeper meaning than is commonly discerned; it means, not merely that all things earthly have an end... but that the soil of peace is thickly sown with the seeds of war and singularly suited to their germination and growth. It was when Kubla Khan had decreed his "stately pleasure dome" – when, that is to say, there were peace and fat feasting in Xanadu – that he heard from afar Ancestral voices prophesying war.

As Diplomacy players, we all know that the transition from war to peace is often marked by the three hand-in-glove disciplines of ultimatum, compromise, and accord:

ULTIMATUM, n. In diplomacy, a last demand before resorting to concessions.

COMPROMISE, n. Such an adjustment of conflicting interests as gives each adversary the satisfaction of thinking he has got what he ought not to have, and is deprived of nothing except what was justly his due.

ACCORD, n. Harmony.
ACCORDION, n. An instrument in harmony with the sentiments of an assassin.

So it comes to pass that the fat lady warbles her last notes to the accompaniment of Lucifer's accordion. We have peace and an end to our game. Let the heralds decree it in the marketplaces across the land -- the final concensus, agreed upon by all surviving players:

Bushwood - FourGotten two-way draw
Rhovanion survival
All other players eliminated

We are now ready for End of Game Statements. I *strongly* encourage you to write one. All of you. And I'd suggest you do it sooner rather than later, lest time slip away and you never get to it. Also, I will write an EoG, too (including my own pre-game assessments of everybody's chances which I wrote down to resurrect at this very moment!), but I will let the players go first.

Let us know when your game turned to brilliance or to dreck. Let us know who was honorable and who was vile and who was bootless.

Also, *please* make suggestions for improvement of the variant. It only gets better by your feedback. (I already have a couple of things I would most definitely change...)

To help jog your memory, I am providing an excerpt from the game's very first adjudication -- after Round One of the SC draft:

"Emerging from the foggy, formless shadows of Dystopia, eight nations begin to take form. They range from the back-scratching El Presidente of Rosstopia to the cave-dwelling barbarians of Rhovanion to the elusive people of Bushwood to other nations too terrifying to name (yet). Each stakes its unneighborly claim to a few square feet of land from which to spawn an empire....
...This is the point at which a few of you have let out a whoop and a holler, 'cuz your position looks pretty awesome. Half of you are thinking, "Yeah, okay. I can work with this." And a couple of you are quietly moaning and gently rocking, because you just didn't realize it could be this bad. After all, like buying shares of Facebook, it seemed like a good idea at the time. And now you have to decide: do I try to make this work, or do I try to colonize somewhere else?"

Diplomacy games may contain lying, stabbing, or deliberately deceiving communications that may not be suitable for and may pose a hazard to young children, gullible adults, and small farm animals.
