DC161 Knights Who Say Ni! - Fall 835 - Strangers I... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Gents,

it was i who proposed the norse/swedish draw, and I would argue that it's that alliance that was the game-changer in this one despite my numerous efforts to break it up - much to Mikael's annoyance...

Although that draw's been voted down, in my opinion that alliance and the level of play from it - including what seems to be unbelievable trust between the partners - deserves credit for taking the win. However, scotland has certainly performed admirably as well.

I'll support a scotland/norse/swedish draw or a swedish/norse draw, but otherwise will keep fighting. No offense to bruce, but my strategy became to prevent a Breton win after our intial partnership failed - mostly due to my dissatisfaction with division of centers.

A proposal to all:

Unless the remaining players are willing to band together against the
Swedes, he's got the solo locked up this year (and may have it anyway
even if we resist).

Britons, Norse, Anglo-Saxons, would love to work with you guys to try
to prevent that and force a draw. If you're interested please email me
direct. Otherwise, I suggest we call this one and vote a Swedish solo.

Sweden, very well played! Enjoyed playing with everyone and hope to
see you guys in other games.

DC161 Knights Who Say Ni! - Fall 835 - Strangers I... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
At the risk of annoying folks (and clinging to my anti-Breton strategy), i'll only vote for the Scot/Norse/Swede draw, and not a 4-way. Certainly y'all can just eliminate me to deal with that contingency.

Hopefully in looking at the board, we can all agree who the three major powers are at this point.

Of course, I will also accept a DIAS as if bretons are going to be included in a draw, then I'll want to insist I am as well (as long as I cling to a one-center existence).

re208 Game launch! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Gentlemen,

We have game launch! Welcome to DC208--A Tale of Two Revolutions.

As you are all either in the US or the UK, and I am in Asia, we’ll stick to GMT for all deadlines. No one claimed to have any access issues over weekends, but I will still try and avoid them as much as possible. If I do run one over a weekend, I’ll try and give you an extra warning. No conflicts with country preferences so off we go…

As we have one person unavailable on Sep 12, I will squeeze the deadline for your first set of orders to Thursday, Sep 11 at 11:59pm GMT. If anyone has any issues with 9/11 not being an auspicious day for a first set, or you just feel you'd like more time for the first one, let me know ASAP and I can push it back to the following Monday...That being said I will always adjudicate as soon as I have a full set of final orders. Please remember, I consider all orders FINAL unless they are marked PRELIMINARY.

I have attached starting position files and a standard map for your use. Let me know if you cannot read .dpy files. Please double check your name/email information, below.

Have fun and best regards!

Bruce

DC161 Knights Who Say Ni! - Winter 835 - Falling F... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Dear Sir, I am writing to complain about that sketch about people failing out of a high building. I have worked all my life in such a building and have never once.... arrgghhh

------------------

Heya folks,

Well, the excitement of the turn seems to be on the diplomatic front. Sparing time from cleaving skulls open, the Dark Ages messengers have been busy delivering end-game proposals from the remaining powers.

For your consideration, the following have been proposed:

1. A Swedish Solo
2. A Swedish/Norse 2-way draw
3. A Swedish/Norse/Breton 3-way draw
4. A Scots/Norse/Swedish 3-way draw
5. A Norse/Swedish/Scots/Breton 4-way draw
6. A DIAS (Anglo-Saxon/Breton/Norse/Scot/Swedish 5-way draw)

As for the Winter adjustments themselves, Sweden builds an army in Gotar and the Anglo-Saxons disband in Dyfed. Spring 836 orders and your end-game proposal votes will be due Friday, September 12th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

Postal Diplomacy Zine Archive - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
For those of you with an interest in Diplomacy hobby history, I wanted to mention the on-line Postal Diplomacy Zine Archive I have been building, with plenty of help from others like Edi Birsan and Craig Reges.

So far there are over 400 zines scanned and posted in pdf format, ranging in time from Graustark #1 (the very first Diplomacy zine published) through to a few zines from the year 2000 and beyond. You can find hobby historical news, rule debates, classic press, strategy and tactics articles, variants, tons of humor, and all the personality that made the postal hobby such fun...along with some of the arguments which a collection of strong personalities seems to inevitably lead to. And the zines posted there are simply the beginning, as I plan to add literally thousands more in the weeks and months to come.

You can check out the Postal Diplomacy Zine Archive in the Diplomacy section of my personal website at:

http://www.whiningkentpigs.com/DW/

Also, if you'd like to stay updated on what I add to the collection (lately I've made additions every few days), you can join the Yahoo group Postalzine which I created for exactly that purpose at:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/postalzine/

Well, Austria knocks one of the German Civil Disorder units out of the game, and England holds onto St. Petersburg. Other than that, not much happened.

There has been a request for a standing EGP: Please vote on a Draw to Include All Survivors - DIAS. Since Germany is in Civil Disorder, they will not be included. Thus the standing EGP is a draw for the remaining players.

Once Within: Game End!! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Once within a fog so dreary, embarked a group of 19 leery
of what they’d find behind this eerie curtain of cryptic rhymed décor.
From them grew the MMA, a group of six… we saw them lay
The premise for a brighter day – then looking back they did no more.
Allegiance proved the winning tide as all the others did subside
And grant the six their greatest pride… A brilliant end to this our war.
Congrats to all who dared explore this game that now is Haven lore.
Shall quoth this Raven, Nevermore

**************************************************

That’s right, after 11 mysterious years, the game comes to a close with a 6-way draw of the Map Makers Alliance:
- Dwarves
- Hobbits
- Nomads
- Magicians
- Rogues
- Wizards

The other remaining players get survivals:
- Barbarians
- Centaurs
- Faeries
- Knights

**************************************************

End-Game-Statements are definitely encouraged, as this was a playtest in many regards… by far the largest FOW game I’ve attempted to run, and my personal favorite map creation.  For me, the task of adjudicating the game became quite daunting toward the midgame, around years 3 to 5, since there was so much going on, and making 19 maps turned out to be a lot more work than I’d imagined.  A full adjudication took about 3-4 hours during this time, and was down to about 2 hours each by the end once there were fewer players remaining.

I will certainly run another game on this map, but this time open map, and not fog, to see how it plays out any differently.

There are lots of other open games on the site…
- Seismic Diplomacy, run by Adam
- Southeast Asia, run by Vegas
- Wheel of Time, run by Jason
- The Original 1958 Diplomacy Game, run by Paolo
- and a 34-player Chaos game where each player starts with 1 sc on the standard map – by Matt

Once within a fog so dreary, embark a group to test their theory
O’er many a quaint and curious set of foggy maps galore
Begins this game of warful scrapping, alliances, and clever stabbing
Of unfortunate souls that are caught napping, mapping at the very core.
Tis a neighbor you’ll discover – attacking, he will try to score
A victory, and nothing more.
****************************************************************
Ah distinctly I recall, it was in that foggy sprawl,
That each and every players' scrawl, they'd sent to me without deplore.
Eagerly anticipating finding who's participating
in the deals they'd been stating, building up a good rapport
While others seeking something more, lash out with their armies for
Their neighbor’s land – declaring war
****************************************************************
Peering thru that foggy curtain, many things you find uncertain
Thrilling, filling with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now to still the beating of your heart I stand repeating
of the centers you are needing for your land to grow to four.
But you wonder never certain if your land will sink or soar
For maybe some have grown by more.
****************************************************************
Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating, then no longer,
"Sir," said I, "or Monster, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was searching thru this land of monsters lurching
From the shadows armed and perching, waiting for the time to score
That I scarce was sure I knew this land was played on ground and shore
But I sense below there’s more.
****************************************************************
Aye, into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no player ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, as the aforementioned token
of good will best went unspoken for what I've been taken for.
This I feared, is what becomes me as my centers dwindle more
While others near the two times four.
****************************************************************
While we bear this slight delay, with players shouting, screaming, Hey -
I need my moves, it's time to play and see what fruits my orders bore
We look around and see what that is in our box tonight a status
of the game and what thereat is deep below the ocean floor
Let thy heart be still a moment as we hold for one day more
Results out soon, both sweet and sore
****************************************************************
Promptly to the game returning, less one empire adjourning
Taking from this loss a learning how to use the fog of war
Nothing further shall be muttered, not a feather will be fluttered
by their parrots - fried and buttered feeding those who played hardcore
Now the beaten pirates leave us as they ponder days of yore
Ladys, mateys... Nevermore
****************************************************************
Taking a substantial beating, once great empires now fleeting
Hoping they will not be meeting with the Pirates out the door
But the fact is some were catching up on sleep; others dispatching
Forces to their border-- scratching, snatching up their centers for
A purpose that will sure not suit them if they wish that good rapport
Elimination – and nothing more
****************************************************************
Now we bid our fondest farewell to the undead who dont dare dwell
with the living - sent their caravels to the deepest ocean floor.
With them go the Samurai, who with one last valiant BONSAI
find that they too have come up dry in their search for something more.
Pray that you will not soon chase them out this toughest game of war...
For some near 30!  (in base four)
****************************************************************
Once again a day goes by without results, you wonder why…
Your GM is a busy guy!  And couldn’t run the turn before.
But do not fret this game delayed, with visions straight and courses stayed
We get back to the fields frayed and scattered full of elven lore
Of hidden moves in wooded lands that only serves to underscore
That in this game, they are no more.
****************************************************************
To this game an end proposed – to some, agreement is supposed
But any single one opposed is all it takes to further pour
Your heart into this foggy game in hopes that someday you’ll proclaim
The happy end for which you came to darken lands of blood and gore.
But looking back the archers, gnomes, and ogres tried their best to score
A victory – But nevermore.
****************************************************************
Once within a fog so dreary, embarked a group of 19 leery
of what they’d find behind this eerie curtain of cryptic rhymed décor.
From them grew the MMA, a group of six… we saw them lay
The premise for a brighter day – then looking back they did no more.

Once Within: DipWiki & RW - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The DipWiki (www.dipwiki.com?title=Haven) is updated with all the Haven info. We’re hoping to turn the wiki into a truly interactive database of variants and diplomacy information, so if you have comments about the game, map, playability, etc, feel free to post them on the relevant wiki page.

And much anticipated, the game’s .dpw file is attached, showing all moves throughout. You can now download the RealWorld variant files from the variant library, at www.diplomaticcorp.com/variants. You’ll need to have RealWORLD, not RealPOLITIK, since RW allows for more players and colors – this game file will not load in RP! If you don’t already have this adjudicator program, you can find it in the downloads page.

Enjoy,

DC176 - Fall 1910 Adjudication - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Fall 1910: this season is dominated by the fighting between Austria
and Italy/Russia.
Russia and Austria have a stand-off in Livonia, but Austria prevails in Berlin.
Austria convoyed the Napolitan Guard to Greece only to find the
Italians there; it successfully defended its Austrian dominance.
More fighting between Italy and Austria in Rumania: again it's the
Austrians that determine the outcome and take Bulgary from the
Italians.
England and France fight over Edinburgh but the French manage to hold
their positions. France tries to enter Belgium but Russian forces stop
them at the Picardy border.

And this brings us to Autumn 1910 retreats for Russia and Italy.
