dc122 - I'm going to attend a conference / Could w... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I didn't say the conf hasn't. In fact I have a UMTS card on my laptop,
so technically I could go to the net anytime.

It's only I don't go there to fiddle on the internet. I go for business and this will be a more than busy week with lectures, meetings, Lunches and Diners with customers and social events till late at night.

I'll just have no time for private matters. It's as easy as that.

Isn't that like a conference on Time Management without clocks? Smile

I'm OK with the delay.

I am going to attend a conference & fair (Telemanagement World in Nice/France) all of next week (Sunday through Thursday) and will need Friday to catch up with work back home in Germany.

Maybe (!) I can spare some time inbetween to sent an occasional mail, but definitely not more. Could move the deadline one week ahead (Wed, 28 Mai 0Cool ?

DC166 (wb0821) - Fall 1908 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The Empire strikes back... Paris and St. Petersburg fall under English control - and the Brits even throw in a life-saver to Russia for good measure. The Tsar sticks around for at least two more turns..

The same cannot be said for our Italian, unfortunately. My thanks to Will for playing this one out to the bitter-sweet end. We'll definitely look forward to seeing you in the next one, bro.

One retreat required from France in Paris. That and the Winter 1908 adjustments will be due tomorrow - Friday, May 16th (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!

The central powers get some payback as Germany muscles back into Kiel - with some Russian assistance. The English unit there is disbanded, but other than that no retreats are needed from Fall 07. Please let me know if you spot any errors - but barring that we cruise right into Winter 1907.

Adjustments will be due Saturday, May 17th (11:59 PM GMT). Cheers!

Heya 173'ers...

Okay - I have now heard from everyone except for our Italian friend. Chris now has 21 hours to contact me or I will be drafting a new Italian player. I will let everyone know what's what as soon as I figure it out myself. =)

Happily, all adjustments have come in. My thanks to all of you players for getting them to me on time. The game takes an exciting turn as most nations bulk up on their fleets - with Austria being the lone exception. Russia, probably predictably, disbands both units not in centers and leaves the Moscow Garrison intact.

PLEASE NOTE!! Up to now you have all been playing two-season dip - with retreats and/or builds submitted with your Spring and Fall turns. We are switching to Trout's usual fare now however - to five seasons... Summer, Autumn and Winter will be treated as seperate turns.

Spring 1903 deadline will be set for a weeks time - for Thursday, May 22nd (11:59 PM GMT.) Let me know if you spot any errors - and Chris, please drop me a line as soon as you receive this.

Cheers!

dc130 ~ Imperial1840 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The DIAS vote has passed and thus ends the first and last ever play-test game of Imperial1840.

All the players showed great patience in working the bugs out of this variant and helping develop it into the playable and interesting world variant I hope it will be.

My thanks to you all.

The lessons learned from this play-test have been carried forward into what I hope will be it's final form: Imperial 1841.

That game I hope to begin in early July, 2008.

dc130 Austrian EGS - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
It's over? Really? Just like that? Hmm... This feels weird. Icky sort of. The game definitely hadn't come to a conclusion yet, tho here we are.

Why did I vote for the draw... Well, we were making great progress against Russia... that was fun, and I really wanted to liberate Berlin... but, I was so at risk of being stabbed and brutally impaled by Spain at any moment. Therefore I figured the risk was pretty high, that if it'll pass, I should milk my chickens now and not risk juggling eggs... er.. something like that.

As to the stop-the-leader... Yes Clark, if you had pulled back, like you started this turn, I would likely have taken my home centers back, and then stopped. I dont think I would have pursued further toward you. At least not with Spain so close to a win.

Brief recap:

The game started out quite fun. China (Dan), Ottoman (Darryl), and myself all recognized that we were the little guys in Eurasia, and we had to ban together. So we formed COPING... the Charter of Puny, Impoverished Nations for Greatness. This was a plan to deal with the fact that Russia was bigger, between all of us, and sure to try to devour the surrounding little powers one by one. And what did Russia do? Well he devoured the surrounding little powers one by one! COPING failed to materialize effectively as each of the small powers did not want to get into a war with Russia, and tried to stay friendly. Then Russia started working with each against the others, and before you knew it, China was devastated, Ottoman was destroyed, and I was the last one on Clark's list.

So without allies willing to go at Russia early, I decided to go work with Spain against France. This worked great, as I got most of Europe, and Spain got most of the colonial holdings. Unfortunately tho, this started to build a monster, as there started 3 imperial powers... and with France dead, and England largely absent most of the game, Spain kinda ran off with the game.

And that led us to the first stop-the-leader, where everyone decided to pound on Spain. I think I was the last holdout, since all my plans were working great with Matt as an ally... we just had so many initiatives in common... my desire to get into Africa / Indian Ocean, his desire to overrun West/South Africa, my desire to get into the Mideast was seeing my guys move away from him, and Matt's constant wars with the US and others saw his guys moving away from me. It was really a great team, but with Spain so close to winning, I finally gave in and moved to force the draw, only to be hit a couple turns later from behind by Russia.

That was an annoying stab, for we had all agreed on this stop-the-leader plan, and then Russia goes and takes advantage of my army shift away from him. So at this point I had no choice... I had to turn all away from Spain, beg Matt for forgiveness (which he was willing to give to get a power off the enemy bandwagon) and I turned east and put up the stalemate in Europe, aided by Spain's backer armies.

Despite many attempts to get Russia back on side, he would not... and when we saw that Russia and Holland were a solid duo and demilitarizing all of Asia, they were soon to be the powers to beat. So we brought Trout over to our side, and little by little nipped at the edges. And that leaves us where we are now: Undefined.

Would be interesting to see where the game might have gone next, or what Matt was planning with regards to when (if) to stab me, or if he would have stuck with Trout and I for long enough to maybe get a 3-way out of it. No telling, since there were so many options yet. But I'll take the draw for now.

If the game is run again, I'll surely like to play. It's a great variant, and great job GM'ing by Jerry... I really like the Imperial Builds style, invented for this game... of being able to build in the colored dots but not the black dots. That made certain centers very strategic... like Holland and Egypt were crucial spots for me, for once I got Egypt, it opened up builds into the Indian ocean, and so on. My goal (before Russia stabbed me) was to get Egypt, and eventually down the African coast to Zan... but that plan was aborted due to pressing matters in Eastern Europe.

See you all next time in 1841,
-mike

DC183 Fall 1901 moves - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
And the fall moves are in...

In the West, Germany and England try to sneak into Belguim, but bounce, leaving the low countries vacant at the end of 1901. Meanwhile, France spends the Winter in Munich, and takes over Iberia. In the East, Turkey gets stacked up, whilst Italy's attempts to move into Trieste are thwarted, but Russia grabs Budapest whilst Austria defends his Italian front.

So, with no retreats required, we move to Winter builds...I need the following builds...with a deadline of Monday 19th at 2000 GMT

England 1
France 3
Italy 1
Russia 3
Turkey 1

Thanks

Russian EOG - DC130 - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
First off, thanks to Jerry for GMing - was a really fun and well-run game.

I'll try to get this as accurate as possible - feel free to call out
any misrememberings/blatant falsehoods. Smile

Started out playing nice to everyone and tried to pick off as many
neutral centers as possible before getting down to business. Ottoman
Empire made some demands I thought were unreasonable (I think it was
that he should get RUM) so I figured I'd start there. Austria was busy
pushing west so I was able to devote most of my western units to the
battle against Ottoman.

After the Turk was gone, Holland and I ganged up on China, and then
worked on the British presence in India. I wish I had more to add, but
in each case it really was just a case of taking advantage of a
numerical advantage - no brilliant tactical coups that I can remember.

Spain was busy getting huge, so me, USA, Austria and Holland decided
to form a stop-the-leader alliance. I had visions of leveraging this
into taking first (soloing?) so I took advantage of what I thought was
an opportunity to grow (without allowing Spain to benefit) by stabbing
Austria. Through a combination of me perhaps miscalculating and
Austria putting up a spirited defense, I wasn't able to take many
centers at all in the enterprise. Trout going over to the
Spain/Austria alliance was a surprise, and sealed the deal on my
megalomaniacal aspirations.

I'm not sure what would have happened if I hadn't stabbed Austria. I
figured that Austria would eventually beat back Spain and then build
armies on our mutual front that would cause me trouble. Plus, I really
only had borders with Holland and Austria, and figured I had more to
gain, and less to lose to Spain, by attacking Austria vs. Holland. I
guess I could have sat back and waited while everyone else took on
Spain, but again, was concerned about the long-term threat of
Austria's armies and frankly was not going to just sit around doing
nothing. In any case, sorry Michael. It made for some funny/awkward
moments because Michael is GMing another game I'm in. "Uh, I'm going
to continue attacking you, and here are my orders for the other game."

I voted for the DIAS because I was losing ground and still saw a
Spanish solo as the most likely outcome of an extended game. Nicely
played, Matt. I owe you a cup at Mory's. Smile

Definitely in for round 2 if you'll have me!

Best,
CL (Russia)

Imperial1840: French EGS - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
As submitted by France:

------ Start of attached email. Subject: dc130 ~ Imperial1840: French EGS ------
When I came into this game, I was on the defensive. Austria had just attacked me, and Spain and Britain were in position to.
The first thing I did was try and find allies against Spain. I figured that if I could get some allies and attack him, he might be pushed back, before he could kick me out of South America.
Austria was open to the idea, right after he took Egypt. So I knew he was going to continue attacking me.
England was open to attacking as well, but, wanted me to attack first, and he would join me.
So I would have had to go it alone against a Spain that outnumbered me slightly on every front.
Or, I could work with Spain against Austria, and attack Britain. My eye was especially on India. This is what I chose, because then at least it would be two against two, instead of just me against Spain and Austria.
Spain played it very well. After my second move, I saw that he was in a position to take 5 of my centers one turn. I debated whether I would beg him to not do it, or say nothing and hope he missed it. I went with the latter, which proved to be a mistake. I just figured that if he was my ally, then I needed to do the moves we had discussed, and if he wasn't, then I was just staving off the inevitable, while fighting Austria and Britain, who I had just provoked.

My big mistake, though, came two turns later. I tried to get another alliance against Spain with Holland, Austria, Britain, the USA, and Russia, and it kind of worked, but not for nearly long enough. I knew, however, by this point that I only had one enemy. I was kicked out of Europe (except London), Asia, and the Pacific. I knew exactly what Spain's next move was going to be. He would convoy an army from Fortress South America to Africa. I saw that I couldn't cut the support Spain would give to the army, so I had to dislodge the fleet instead. I figured a way to dislodge the fleet while ceding no ground to Spain. I thought it was genius. I did not realize, however, that Spain's dislodged fleet could retreat into an open center of mine (I had moved to bounce the army being convoyed, even though I had disrupted the convoy, so that move was completely unnecessary). That caused me to lose a unit, and I could not offer a solid defense after that.
I slowly withered away into nothingness.

I did enjoy the agony of this game. Ever since I joined it, Spain was far and away the dominant power to stop, but I do not know how it was before.

Steve-Replacement France

Jerry: This is assuming that I don't come back to win the game. If I do, then obviously I will have a different EGS.

Newbies: Watch out! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hey Newbies,

Welcome to this brill site, where the atmosphere is friendly and the games are run in an efficient and effective manner.

If you do decide to venture in, and hear ANYTHING like the following:

"I am absolutely with you..."

"My mind is made up and I will stay the course with you"

"I remain firmly in your corner"

"I will continue to stay out of xxx as promised"

[u:31caf68f10]Or my own personal favourite:[/u:31caf68f10]

"My game is not that of deceit as you will soon find out for sure"

Should you hear of any or variants of the above, check your home bases, lock up your daughters, and support everything you got coz whoever's talking to you like that is coming to get you for sure!

DC179 - Unpleasantness - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Gentlefolk of DC-179 ...

Feel obliged to step in here concerning some comments that have been posted on the DC-179 forum. I sympathize with the player frustration, but would like to make several points clear.

1. All GMs on Diplomaticcorp are volunteers. We do not get paid to do this - we do it because we love the game and because we want to ensure that those who love it as much as we do have an opportunity to play.

2. Some GMs on DC have more experience at running games than others - this is simply the nature of the beast. Those who run games that appear seamless to the players have been through or had just as many pratfalls and screw-ups as those who are currently having troubles in their games. This is how we learn and grow - and develop a broad base of GMs to ensure as many games as possible can run.

3. Except in rare cases where real-life matters intervene or the GM finds himself unable to continue - we do not replace GMs at DC. Indeed - one of the things that I love about this community is that GMs are able to run their games with no heavy-handedness from the Moderators.

4. Garry is working with Steve and the other moderators to ensure that future adjudications will follow in a timely manner. If players are on time with their orders, it is totally agreed that the GM should follow suit with the turn adjudication. Concerning the rest of the raised issues:

a) The Late Build - I admit that Garry asked my advice on what to do here. I told him that since it was a FRIENDLY game, and not tournament play, that he should be all right to allow the build assuming that he explained the rationale to the players. He did so in a very reasonable manner, and quite frankly I fail to see where the disgruntlement on this topic is coming from. As I was the one asked for advice on this one - anyone who feels that I told Garry wrongly may feel free to write me and discuss the matter.

b) The NMR - No Move's Received happen in games. I admit that I do not know the full details on this one, but once again - anyone who feels shafted by this may contact me and discuss it. We will review Garry's house rules together - or the club default HR's if Garry does not have a full set of his own.

c) The Retreats - In Garry's latest adjudication, it says very clearly that he defaulted retreats - but that if players CHOSE OTHERWISE to just let him know and he would correct the adjudication. I do this myself when there is only one retreat option other than OTB - in this case Garry's style differs slightly from mine. With the option clearly given and explained to change that retreat, there is no unfairness to the players that I can see.

Once again - any players that feel as though they are being given a raw deal in this game may contact Garry directly, or address the issue with myself or any of the other moderators. I would look forward to discussing any of these points in further detail.

Best regards,

Trout

Who voted NO? We had 7 of 8 public yes votes... but I suspect it was one of those 7 that silently voted no. What gives.

A BC/CALI/MEX 3 way is the same with or without any combination HL, NY, QC, FL or CUBA.

ugh... NY feels like the Seattle Supersonics... questioning how many more lame duck seasons before they can escape and move on...
