Who voted NO? We had 7 of 8 public yes votes... but I suspect it was one of those 7 that silently voted no. What gives.

A BC/CALI/MEX 3 way is the same with or without any combination HL, NY, QC, FL or CUBA.

ugh... NY feels like the Seattle Supersonics... questioning how many more lame duck seasons before they can escape and move on...

Never wear your best pants when you go to fight for freedom ...

Always proper advice.. The draw proposal is voted down by one or more players and we continue the fray. The noose tightens ever tighter around New York and Florida - but some interesting movements can be seen behind the scenes...

No retreats are required and we cruise straight on into Fall 2009. Deadline will be set for just under a weeks time, for Thursday, May 22nd (11:59 PM GMT).

As always, please let me know if you spot any errors. Cheers!

dc130 Holland EOG Message - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I'll begin by joining my fellow players in thanking Jerry for an excellent game. Although I have not tried my hand at GM-ing, I have a pretty good idea that the amount time and effort that went into managing this one was significant.

I'd also like to thank the others players. Good communication and lots of interactivity throughout. Some interesting alliance shifting and always good game play each turn that required equally thoughtful responses.

Overall, FANTASTIC game play attributes in this one. Right scale, right number of players/centers and lots of opportunity to engage in strategy and alliance building on a "global" basis.

Holland was also an interesting country to play. Its European and South American dots are not of much use as someone bigger nearby is wanting to take them away from you quickly (although playing "pirate" with Holland's fleets off the West coast of Europe is entertaining). So I quickly looked to "trade" some of these orphan centers, arranging to be dislodged so that a re-build could take place elsewhere.

Holland's early advantage is in the Eastern Pacific. This is because Holland can bring together a small, but early critical mass of fleets to take out neutrals as well as make it obvious to lone colonists from other countries that trying to hang around would not be worthwhile. So cleaning out the Eastern Pacific was my early strategy and it worked albeit more slowly than I would have liked.

China was next for Holland. Not as easy of a target as I initially thought it would be. Although I never felt the outcome was not certain, it seemed to take forever. Frankly, in the end I couldn't do it alone and had to seek a partnership with Russia to really complete things. I only ended up with about half of the total dots I would have liked to have gained from China.

Interestingly, I offered a very quiet deal to the new China at one point: I'll let you survive if you assist me in kicking the Russians out of Asia. Ok, maybe I told him he'd need to hand over Shanghai as payment...Regardless, China turned me down flat saying he "already had a deal with Russia." A bad deal obviously.

It wasn't until China was out, and my relationship was solidified with Russia, that I felt like Holland really was able to achieve some real growth. Although I had been in touch with both Britain and France early on, there was really nothing there. I didn't feel I was getting anything out of cooperating with what I considered to be a very conservative Brit commander and the French just were not positioned well enough vis-a-vis my positions and goals, so I determined relatively early they would not be long-term allies and both ended up being my final targets in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

After China, Russia was an easy partner to work with and I think we both did a good job of DMZing our mutual sectors to allow us to look elsewhere and not worry about a stab.

After securing India and a couple of the leftover dots in the Indian Ocean at the expense of the weakened France and England, I made a dash for the East African coast. The joint H/R plan was for Holland to take the coastal dots via convoyed armies (you'll note my stranded armies in Ceylon and Madagascar at the end of the game) and secure the mouth of the Red Sea. Russia would at the same time move to cut off the Arabian Peninsula to further Austrian troops. Then H/R would come together somewhere in the center of the Peninsula. On the other side, I tried to assist Trout by sending a number of fleets toward S. America. Great plan in theory. But a tad slow on the execution I'm afraid, as Spain was able to slip into a series of excellent defensive positions along both the African and S. American coasts, completely stalling my attack. He then kept pouring fleets into every available sea space and I just could not dislodge him anywhere.

Should the game have continued. Holland would have lost its African dots and been pretty much bottled up in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, nearly in a stalemate with Spain for the remainder of the game and very little opportunity for further growth, outside an attack on Russia.

If I were to play Holland again I think I would have gone after Russia earlier in the game, and before attacking the Chinese mainland, in order to secure her Pacific centers closer to the outset. There are only a few and early in the game its defense in the East/Pacific is minimal. Once I had taken those few keys centers, particularly the ports, I would sue for peace. Obviously arranging to have Russia engaged with someone else on her Western front would be very helpful to this limited strategy. Maybe I would also look to somehow develop an earlier, stronger presence along Africa's Eastern coast too. Maybe next game...

In summary, Holland is an ok starting country--not the strongest, nor the weakest--but expect relatively slow early growth. Good middle game country though with many possible strategic options. Of course, you also have to enjoy working with fleets...I would have thought America would be able to grow faster, but the almost immediate conflict with England in the North really hold sit up. This also gives Spain an almost free hand in South and Central America making it, I feel, the one to beat from the start.

Once again, thanks for a great game. I hope to participate in the next one as well.

Best regards!

Bruce

The DIAS vote has passed and thus ends the first and last ever play-test game of Imperial1840.

All the players showed great patience in working the bugs out of this variant and helping develop it into the playable and interesting world variant I hope it will be.

My thanks to you all.

The lessons learned from this play-test have been carried forward into what I hope will be it's final form: Imperial 1841.

That game I hope to begin in early July, 2008.

Heya folks,

Guess there was a little too much Grand Theft Auto IV on your GM's part last night, and not enough reading comprehension... England builds a fleet in Liverpool, not Edinburgh. The corrected map is attached.

Apologies for being a stoopid-head. I blame society. =)

Cheers,

As of now, I have confirmed all received orders. It is Saturday midday.

One note: Austria has sent in a change to his retreat. He retreats to Alb in lieu of the retreat that I gave. Please make a note
accordingly.

I have not received orders from all at this point. I will check in again tonight to confirm emails but then won't be able to tomorrow
until right before the adjudication.

Oh, and I don't, as of now, know of any NMR possibility. I was referencing what could have happened, not what I know to be forthcoming.

Our next deadline [Fall 1902] is Sunday the 18th at 5pm CST. I will adjudicate that night when I return to town.
I WILL have access to email sporadically so I will confirm orders once a day between now and then.

A side note - there seems to be some unhappiness with my GMing. Given this, I will open the door to say that if you guys wish,
I will ask for a replacement GM on your behalf. I am quite happy to do so and I am sure that someone will eventually be willing
to take you guys on. Your call.

As an extra side note - since we are disparaging both my timing AND the GM call I made - please note: I did not have all orders ANYWAY
when I decided to push the original timeline due to the late French build so I know that some of you benefitted from that; one can never know but an
NMR could have happened.

Whatever though. I don't want to get into a pitched argument over what could or could not have been NOR my timing of the adjudications. If a majority votes,
I am happy to step down because the bickering is unhealthy for the game.

DC168 - Game Delay and An Empty Orders Inbox - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi folks,

Well, I have a funny story about DC-168. I haven't heard from Nick but obviously he is having a bad case of Real Life at the moment - as can happen to the best of us...

So I took an attempt to adjudicate the Fall 1908 turn to help him out a little bit.. Imagine my surprise when I opened the orders inbox and found only ONE set of orders for DC-168 copied there... 1 out of 4 - not a good average...

Soooo.. With only 25% of the orders I cannot in good conscience adjudicate.

We'll unfortunately have to set the turn deadline for DC-168 one turn behind pace... Please ensure that all your Fall 1908 orders are turned into Nick (with copies to the orders inbox) by Monday, May 19th (11:59 PM GMT). If NIck remains unavailable I will adjudicate the turn - but I cannot do so unless you CC (orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com (orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com)) .

Apologies for the delay everyone..

Heya gang,

I'm missing 3 sets of adjustments unfortunately.. The players in question were notified last night and now have approximately 4.5 hours left before I waive the builds or auto-disband the removals...

Apologies for the slight delay. Thanks for understanding folks,

Fair's fair. I think people should be able to make up their own minds for me.

The stewpot boils and brims over in the south as the Anglo-Saxons take Gwent but the Swedish move deeper into the fray. Meanwhile, the Norse find some fierce resistance in the North as the Scots recover position...

Two retreats needed - both mentioned above.. The Bretons and the Norse both have Summer 830 moves to submit. Deadline will be set for Monday, May 19th (11:59 PM GMT).

Heya folks,

It was pointed out to me that I made a slight miscue and didn't include the necessary Russian retreat with the adjudication last night. Apologies for the error, and my thanks to those who pointed it out.

After consultation with Rob, Russia disbands the army in Omsk. I did ask Rob for the disband AFTER he had seen the other Winter results - so I totally understand if any of you wish to cry foul. Please just let me know if you have an issue with this late adjustment, and I will resolve the issue through other means. Rob has assured me, however, that he would have disbanded in the north on the Chinese front regardless - but I sympathize if any of you other players feel that he has had an unfair advantage here.

Cheers,

Come the three corners of the world in arms,
And we shall shock them. Nought shall make us rue ...

Heya gang,

Two NMRs this round unfortunately, as England and the Ottomans fail to submit disbands. To keep the game moving, I auto-disbanded following these two principles:
- units furthest away from home centers first
- armies before fleets
- alphabetical after that

The results were disbands in Helgoland Bight and Bulgaria. Other adjustments are listed below. With that, we move forward into Spring 1603, with orders due Friday, May 23rd (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers folks!

ITALY HAS BEEN ELIMINATED. My personal thanks go to Tim for playing Italy and for playing to the end, even after losing all his home centres. Tim would be welcome in any future DiplomaticCorp game that I GM. I urge each remaining player to sends their thanks to Tim too.
When a player has been eliminated I will write to them asking for feedback on the game. This can be anything on which they'd like to comment on regarding the game. This feedback is completely optional. For my own purposes, I'd like to hear a player's views of how the running of the game can be improved. All constructive criticism is welcome. Of course, the player can also send the end-of-game statement to me and also to any and all of the players.
If an eliminated player wishes to receive future adjudications then I'm happy to keep them on the distribution list on request.
These results will also be posted to the DiplomaticCorp DC175 message board.
[u:0c555dfcd6]Preliminary orders are highly recommended. [/u:0c555dfcd6]

.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.EC_hmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Tahoma;} In case the 5-way sounds a little too weak for any of you - I'll happily vote for a 4-way that doesn't include my meagre little empire!

Of course, I'll take the 5-way DIAS Smile

Armies rise up in Berlin and Ankara - while one disappears in Tuscany. Meanwhile, the politicians are working furiously and a 5-way DIAS proposal is tabled for your consideration.

Deadline for Spring 1908 orders and the DIAS vote is set for Friday, May 23rd (11:59 PM GMT).

Cheers!
