DC460 Puppetmasters GAMESTART - Cartesian   (Jun 21, 2013, 11:51 am)
Welcome Puppetmasters all!
The game has now begun...

I am your GM (or "Master of Puppetmasters"Wink John Langley. My email is cartesian.i(at)gmail.com

I shall be using Realpolitik to adjudicate this game and will be attempting to stick to a schedule of 1 week per major season (Spring and Fall). Deadlines for Spring and Fall will usually be on a Monday at 1500 GMT. We are currently on British Summer Time which is GMT + 1:00. I think this means that Rene is just one hour ahead of me, but the rest of you are as much as 9 hours ahead (Simon) or 5 hours (Jeremiah) behind me.

Given the multiple time-zones I shall quote deadlines as GMT times. The deadline will almost always be 1500 GMT.If in doubt, look here http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ or ask me!

I hope to adjudicate and send out the results within a few hours of each deadline, and will let you know if there will be a delay.
In case you have not already done so, please have a look at the Default House Rules (attached). I shall be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Nobody has declared any relationship or knowledge of any player outside the game.
Meanwhile: it is time to start your diplomatic processes! If any of you would like to copy me into your emails with each other, that would be great.

Since it is already Friday, and because you will obviously all have plenty to say to each other, the first deadline will be over a week long, which I think is about right for the first one.

*** Deadline for Spring 1901: Monday 1st July at 1500 GMT ***
Please could each of you send me your preliminary orders as soon as possible. This can prevent an NMR in the case of unforeseen computer problems, life-events, temporary forgetfulness etc etc

Please use the recommended format for the Subject line of your email: DC number, versionnumber and correct season. Eg. DC460 Turkey Spring 1901 version 1

One more thing: I like to see Press and will publish any I get as either White or Grey (attributed or anonymous), with the adjudications.
Thank you all for introducing yourselves. I am hoping for a good clean game with plenty of blood-curdling stabs..! Always remember your enemy's enemy may be your friend, but he may also be a liar!

I wish you all a good game!
Your GM

John

DC457: Fall 1618 - mmedeiros   (Jun 20, 2013, 10:12 pm)
Comments: Prussia now in the hands of the Scandinavians (as well as Silesia). England invades Brittany forfeiting the attack on the Spanish-held Dutch provinces! (Has the alliance collapsed?) Austria continues its expansion; pierces the French eastern front (army of Savoy in retreat); Austrian fleet now moving through the Tyrrhenian Sea. Spain takes Algiers and southern French port in Languedoc.

Sorry guys if you feel like I've dragged things out and taken something away from the game's enjoyability, but I stand by my approach and will comment further when it's time for an EGS.
In the meantime, thanks for the game and well played. I wonder if there's another twist in the tale?
Thanks a lot Hamish, I've really enjoyed being a part of this game and you're doing a smashing job.

Can we just all agree to an EAT 3-way draw? I'm fairly certain all three of us will vote yes. If you get it by tomorrow, will you end the game then? I assume the final center count will reflect france's elimination, and england and my gain.
I vote yes.
And yeah, I'm excited about the EOG's. Though the dragging out of the game to eliminate France made it a little less exciting.

I'll write more in the EOG, but I don't feel like you reduced the games enjoyability at all. Just drew it out longer. Smile

Russia to England: Sorry about that... please support me again this Fall Smile  Thanks!
Russia

dc459 Spring 02 moves and press - jerome777   (Jun 19, 2013, 10:47 am)
Catalonian Chronicle, 8 April, 1902

*Turkish power in the Balkans ended by triple attack even as Sultan's armies invade Sevastopol!*

*Memories of 1870 revived as Germans pour into Burgundy!*

*Blood flows in the fields of Flanders as German army smashes into BEF - the English hold the line!*

*Red faces in Russian admiralty as breakdown in communications allows Swedish independence to continue - but for how long!?!*

*Thousands of refugees clog Dalmatian towns as four titanic armies clash over city of Trieste!*

*Paper shortages and move receipt confusion prompt mea culpa from editor!*

Welcome to the eighth edition of your inimitable Catalan Chronicle! Wartime paper shortages and confusion about orders deadlines have conspired to hold up the production of this newspaper and we thank our loyal readership for their forbearance at this difficult time.

There have been lots of battles across our Continent over the past couple of months:

Austria:
A Budapest - Trieste (*Bounce*)
A Serbia - Bulgaria
F Trieste - Albania
A Vienna Supports A Budapest - Trieste

England:
A Belgium - Holland (*Fails*)
F Edinburgh - Norwegian Sea
F London - English Channel (*Bounce*)
F North Sea Supports A Belgium - Holland (*Cut*)
F Norway Supports F Gulf of Bothnia - Sweden (*Void*)

France:
F Brest - English Channel (*Bounce*)
A Burgundy Supports A Holland - Belgium (*Dislodged*)
F Marseilles - Spain(sc)
F Portugal - Mid-Atlantic Ocean
A Spain - Gascony

Germany:
A Berlin - Silesia

F Denmark - North Sea (*Fails*)
A Holland - Belgium (*Fails*)
A Munich Supports A Ruhr - Burgundy
A Ruhr - Burgundy

Italy:
F Greece Supports A Serbia - Bulgaria
F Rome - Tyrrhenian Sea
F Tunis - Ionian Sea

A Tyrolia - Trieste (*Bounce*)
A Venice Supports A Tyrolia - Trieste

Russia:
F Gulf of Bothnia - St Petersburg(sc) (*Bounce*)
A Moscow - St Petersburg (*Bounce*)
A Rumania Supports A Serbia - Bulgaria

F Sevastopol - Black Sea
A Ukraine - Warsaw

Turkey:
F Ankara Hold
A Armenia - Sevastopol
A Bulgaria Hold (*Dislodged*) - autoretreated to Constantinople
F Smyrna - Aegean Sea

Which means we have a couple of retreats for you:

Turkish A Bulgaria can retreat to Constantinople.

French A Burgundy can retreat to Marseilles or Paris or Picardy.

In situations such as Turkey this turn, where there is only one valid retreat possible, I will auto-retreat the unit concerned to the only valid province. If you would like to keep this retreat, no further action is necessary. However, if you would like to retreat the unit off-the-board instead of my autoretreat, then please inform me within 24 hours of the adjudication deadline.

I don't think it will be possible to get the game timetable 'back on track' this week. So, I'm going to give you some slightly different deadlines:

Summer 02 retreat and press: Thursday 20 June 2000GMT

Autumn 02 press deadline 1: Saturday 22 June 2000GMT

Autumn 02 press deadline 2 and autumn moves: Monday 24 June 2000GMT

Autumn 02 retreat and press: Tuesday 25 June 2000GMT

Winter 02 builds and press: Thursday 27 June 2000GMT

...and then we're back on track with Spring 03 Monday 1 July 2000GMT.

We also have some telegraphs from our correspondents in all the major cities of Europe for your perusal:

Editorial (the GM):

Sorry about the delay in getting your moves out, everybody. This was caused by some deadline confusion that I could probably have helped with by being more assiduous in confirming receipt of orders. I will confirm each and every set of orders I receive from now on - if you don't get a receipt from me by, say, an hour or two before the deadline, I strongly advise you to resubmit your orders.

France to Germany and Italy: you'll see my promises are kept

---------------------------------------------------------------

From our Vienna correspondent:

Russia -- Turkey leaves Con open? Lets us walk into Bul?  Well, I
don't look twice at nice gifts, I just smaile and say "Thank You".
 Appreciate the support!
Italy -- not too late to become friends. Your forces off my border,
my forces off of yours. You attacked first though, so your move
backwards first. Either army would be a good signal.Germany -- Any chance Mun would be free to help out in Tyl? Stay strong! Our cultural bonds will keep us safe from the heathens!

France to Russia: if there's an EG, happy to work against both with you

I

My friends, why all the hate?  There is no reason to fear or loath your Italian friends.  We are only interested in making the world a better place.  To do that we must rid the world of the pig dogs known as Austria Hungry.  We have no issues with our German, French, Russian or Turkish friends.

I ask that the French honor their word and move north to cleanse the English.  I implore the Germans to aid the French in this noble quest.  I ask the my Russian and Turkish friends put aside their squabbles and aide me in Austria.  I
am no fool, I understand that there may well come a time when we must
all fight each other but until that time I ask the the brave warriors of
Russia and Turkey, join me in fighting the pig dogs of Austria.

With great thanks,
Italy

Flying high over Europe in one of these crazy flying contraptions,
your roving reporter is wishing his feet were on the ground, somewhere
safe, like China.
Word on the street is that the Turks are not happy with Russia's
attempts to coax Austria into an alliance, and breathing easy as Austria
seems to be non-talkative.Russia is on a roll, but Turkey is fighting back.
What a start for the Italian! My bets were placed with the English
bookies a week ago. Got Austria back-pedaling, and France explaining Med
presence so as not to upset him. Everyone running scared from the
Italian (then again, it's France. Oh wait, France surrendering is a
timewarp from the future)

Russia to England: you need to be sending me consistent messages if you want to work with me

Yo Russia, If I was to helps youse into Bulgaria, and I may just to see if youse are worthy of trust.  Lets me tell ya, I could use a pal right about now and I make a great pal and I make a bad enemy.  Youse know whats I am talking about? Huh?

France to Germany: England is clearly working with Russia

Russia to Germany & England:  If either of you supported me into
Swe, congrats!  You've won yourself a grateful Tsar.  How can I help?

Russia to Turkey:  F Smy?  A peace offering?  Hopefully a vacant Armenia.

dc453 GAME END! - landru428   (Jun 18, 2013, 5:52 pm)
This was a fun game.   I got bum rushed right in Spring 01, which is always a tough hand to be deal.  I got lucky to find Germany a willing accomplice in 02 so my fortunes changed.   Germany then suffered from hypertrophy ended up on everyone's most wanted list.   He was a good ally and I should have backed him, but I didn't really see where else I could go.   Anyway, he almost had me, but his eastern position collapsed just in the nick of time.   My poorly times NMR cost me the chance of going into 1st place, but considering Turkey's lot, it was better not to have the whole world against me.   In the end it was a coin toss whether to end the game or keep playing.    I think the game was just getting interesting.  Smile

Thanks Jerome for a fine job and Garry as well.   See you all next year!

Thanks for a great game, everybody. I feel like this one really highlighted that Diplomacy is a game of tactics just as it is one of negotiation. The tactical battles between myself and Germany/Turkey were a real treat, and it was cool to be a part of the shifting dynamic of alliances that changed so much from 1901 from an AGR to an RTFE and finally to RFI against T. I'm a relatively new player and this game gave me some great experience. Hope to play with y'all again soon. Cheers!-John C.
