dc394 builds - Jim-Bob   (Aug 10, 2012, 7:33 am)
Agreed, that sounds good.  In front of all of you, we're saying that I'm going to meet Mike Sims this weekend some time, right?  That's the only good excuse for not getting the results out.

You guys need a new map to visualize the movement of 3 retreats?

Pathetic!

I tell ya...

When I was young... maps were hammered out of stone... and if you make a mistake - you dealt with it - and we only got a new map when the local mason would carve out a new tablet from the quarry - so we drew lines in the sand - and pretended rocks were armies - and sticks were fleets - and we liked it!

No leniency.  Moves today!  Mwuhahahaha

And then after this is the great World Dip Con here in Chicago.  Are any of you going?  If not, you should.  Altho they won't hand draw personalized retreat maps for you in FTF... you have to <gasp> visualize your own!

Enjoy,
-mike

DC406: Spring 10 Final! - offdisc   (Aug 10, 2012, 12:46 am)
Retreats are in.... partially... but since one unit only had one place to move, I defaulted there.
Knights: F BEAVERSDAM - CELESTIAL DELTATrolls: A Sorrows End - Pygmy

Deadline for Fall 10 will be Thursday, 8/16.  I wanted to get one Fall session done during the Olympics (so many teams to choose from for the Build/Disband category names), but alas, they don't run long enough.  Wait, did I just say that????  Smile

Thanks,Mike---------

DC431 Winter 1902 results - smileyrob   (Aug 09, 2012, 7:58 pm)
Gentlemen,

Here are the retreat and adjustment results. Jack choose not to retreat to Marseilles. I am interested in seeing how that decision plays out. Also with armies built in Berlin and Warsaw, we may be seeing the beginning of a bit of tension between Germany and Russia. Then again, maybe not. Are those armies headed for Austria instead?

GMs open their own games? - Corrino   (Aug 09, 2012, 12:59 pm)
No, not unless you consider it a burden on you to create the games.

I think having a gatekeeper is a very good thing. He can vet the GM and the game parameters prior to it appearing on the forum. It is only a minor delay, from the GM'S perspective, and it is both a check on and a reassurance to the GM to know that a VRP (very responsible person) is keeping an eye on everything.

The problem with giving everyone the power to set up games on their own is that "everyone" includes a lot of idiots, which is to say not only the blatantly stupid and malicious people, but also all the nice folks who think they know what they're doing right up until the moment they totally screw everything up.

If you do want to get out from under having to set up every game yourself, I think you should (a) try to find another volunteer (no, not me) to do the job for you, or (b) modify your game-setup app so that anyone can set up a game but it still needs to be signed off by a VRP before being posted publicly.

GMs open their own games? (Help & Suggestions) Zoterik Aug 13, 02:20 pm
I agree with Corrino on all points.
GMs open their own games? (Help & Suggestions) Blueraider0 Aug 15, 08:54 pm
I agree 100%, but theoretically only GMs could make games, so it isn't EVERYONE. Mike et al would still need to approve someone to be a GM, and could revoke that right if they spammed the open games list. So I agree, but don't think the problems pointed out are that relevant.

Mike, do you often turn down GM requests to run games?
GMs open their own games? (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic Aug 16, 11:35 am
No, I rarely if ever turn down requests... I was just wondering if ppl having to go thru a moderator is a choke point. Maybe this casuses ppl who might otherwise see a create a game option to not create a game thinking maybe more is involved. The burden is not an issue at all.
GMs open their own games? (Help & Suggestions) Blueraider0 Aug 20, 04:44 pm
In that case I think the moderator helps. Making a game isn't terribly involving, but RUNNING one certainly is, and I think ensuring everyone goes through you is a subtle way to say "This is kind of a serious commitment." Dropping a game as a player is a drag, but dropping a game as a GM is a real hassle. But then again I've GM'd for a while. Maybe needing to go through a moderator is scaring off potential new GMs?
DC406: Spring 10 Results! - offdisc   (Aug 09, 2012, 2:11 am)
Hi All,
We are definitely winding down to the endgame, but play is vigorous! It's like watching the USA/China beach volleyball semi -- you have a good idea who will win, and yet the underdogs keep surprising. So much fun to watch!

World DipCon is also upon us, and I know several people are attending. I will be here in Denver, wishing I could be there, but not missing the heat and humidity (well, the humidity -- it's supposed to be damn hot here too). Have fun, and don't kill each other after seeing these results. Smile

DC433 - Zoterik   (Aug 08, 2012, 10:33 pm)
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... but it all depends on which side of the Mediterranean you watch the unfolding wars of conquest.  A busy Fall turn leads to five units dislodged, one of which (Egyptian A Petra) has no retreat and is disbanded.  Therefore we proceed to the Autumn 03 turn.  The necessary retreats and possible moves are provided below the orders.  Autumn 03 retreats are due at 9:00pm US Central on 10 August, or 03:00 BST on 11 August.  However, please note that due to my participation in the WDC, I will likely be adjudicating much later than that (possibly in the morning), so I thank you in advance for your patience.  Just to be safe, have the retreats submitted before the deadline as per usual.

DC428 Winter 1905 Adjustments - Zoterik   (Aug 08, 2012, 10:12 pm)
I made a counting error last turn:  Italy now has six supply centers, not five.
The Spring 1906 orders are due at 9:00 US Central time on 12 August, or 03:00 BST on 13 August.  Thank you in advance for your patience this weekend; I will participate in the WDC here in Chicago, and therefore be unable to confirm order submissions for most of the day.

DC431 Fall 1902 Results - smileyrob   (Aug 08, 2012, 12:52 pm)
Gentlemen,
Again I must apologize for the delay in publishing these results. I worked way too late into the evening last night,. I knew Tuesdays were going to be a busy day for me during the course of this game, and I should likely have made the deadlines either Mon/Wed or Wed/Fri. I hope I haven't inconvenienced or frustrated any of you too much.

First things first, the proposal to concede to Russia fails. However it has been proposed again, so please vote with your Spring 1903 orders.

We are beginning to see more separation in size amongst the powers, with Russia, France and Germany putting some distance between themselves and the rest. Austria and Italy are treading water, while Britain and maybe Turkey might be sinking.

I need a winter order from everyone save Jerome. Those are due by Thursday 8PM PDT. Unless someone request otherwise, I will adjudicate when I have all the orders. Remember you can condition your adjustments on other players' retreats. As it is possible for Italy to retreat to Marseilles, at the very least I will need conditional adjustment orders from Sun.

I may (said in true non-committal dip fashion) come out for a round or two on Saturday.  I live here... but will be out of town Thu/Fri so I can't make the whole shebang.

GMs open their own games? - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 07, 2012, 7:36 am)
Poll... should we open up dc to allow GMs to create games themselves on the Open Games list? Pros / Cons?
-mike

[Reply]

GMs open their own games? (Help & Suggestions) Corrino Aug 09, 12:59 pm

Maybe needing to go through a moderator is scaring off potential new GMs?

gotten my share of "map mistakes" here.... I of course have been on
the attendance list for World DipCon since the beginning, I don't see
why you ALL aren't coming!!!

I tell ya...

When I was young... maps were hammered out of stone... and if you make a

No leniency. Moves today! Mwuhahahaha

And then after this is the great World Dip Con here in Chicago. Are any of
you going? If not, you should. Altho they won't hand draw personalized

No leniency.  Moves today!  Mwuhahahaha

And then after this is the great World Dip Con here in Chicago.  Are any of you going?  If not, you should.  Altho they won't hand draw personalized retreat maps for you in FTF... you have to <gasp> visualize your own!
Enjoy,
-mike
