dc358 fall 1901 results! - coryfucius   (Jan 13, 2011, 5:56 pm)
Unfortunately, our game's lack of movement in the west has gotten worse, as we have NMRs from both England and France.  Under the tournament rules, both players are entitled to return to the game at any time, there is no civil disorder.  The French President could even return in time to use his 1 earned build.

Meanwhile, the game just got very interesting in the east.  Austria supports Turkey's attempt to gain Rumania, bouncing the supported Russian fleet move.  As a result, Rumania remains neutral for another year, and Turkey gains control of the Black Sea.  And because Austria's army moves eastward from Trieste, Italy's self-bounce in Venice proves unnecessary.

Winter 1901 build orders will be due tomorrow, Friday 1/14 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT.  Please send them in early if you can, it's been a crazy week here at the office.  Everyone except England will have builds due:

Austria:  build 2

France:  build 1

Germany:  build 3

Italy:  build 1

Russia:  build 2

Turkey:  build 1

Lordy, Lordy!  It looks like we got us an honest-to-goodness Sea Lion here!  England manages to deny France that second dot in Belgium, but you know it's never a good sign for the British when they lose the North Sea.

In the East, there appear to be definite signs of Russo-Austrian cooperation, but once again things aren't quite perfect for the team, as Turkey grabs the Black Sea while bouncing the Austrian fleet out of Greece and thus limiting the Archduke to a single Winter build.

All in all, an interesting and eventful first year.  Everybody gets a build.  I approve!

RETREATS:

English F North Sea can retreat to Yorkshire or Edinburgh or Norwegian Sea or Skagerrak or Helgoland Bight or OTB (off the board).

ADJUSTMENTS:

Austria:   Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1
England:   Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1
France:    Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  3 Build  2
Italy:     Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1
Russia:    Supp  6 Unit  4 Build  2
Turkey:    Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1

NEXT DEADLINE:  Tomorrow, Friday, January 14, at 1800 EST.

*** REMEMBER *** The Autumn Retreats and Winter Adjustments are adjudicated together.  You must submit all both sets of orders (in England's case) for tomorrow.  You may specify build orders that are conditional on the English retreat.

e.g.  If F North retreats to Edi or York, build A Smyrna.  Else, build F Constantinople.

Cheers,

Chris

DC 359 Side note - untitled36   (Jan 13, 2011, 9:19 am)
Now might be a good time to note a couple of things:

1) I accept order changes up until the time I begin adjucation. However I'm usually pretty punctual on that, so don't *expect* those after-deadline orders to get in. Still, I wanted you to be aware of how I work.

2) I don't believe anyone has done this so far in this game, but I remember dealing with this in previous games. I'm generally pretty liberal about understanding what is meant by a semi-ambiguous order. For example, if you send in A Pru-Wer, I'd *probably* assume you meant warsaw. As long as there's no other reasonable option. For example, Par-Bru would NOT be valid because I'm not sure if you mistyped Bre or Bur. My point to all of this is that if you want to *intentionally* misorder, please tell me what you are doing, and I will oblige as far as I can without compromising the nature of the game. Again, I don't think this has been an issue so far this game, but I want you all to know where I stand.

Thanks everyone!

John

*Iberia taken by armies!*

*Still peaceful in the west*

Last blitz the game I was playing and the game I gm'ed followed an almost identical path, which messed with my mind trying to balance the two. At least this time around, the game I'm playing and this one have been pretty drastically different so far. So thanks for making it easier to keep my games straight! Smile

We'll roll right into Winter, which is due tomorrow at 8:00 AM CST (2:00 PM GMT). Center ownership and adjustments due are at the bottom of this email, but everyone besides russia has builds to turn in. Thanks all!

Hey all,

Not many big suprises in the builds, but tension continues to build in the west. 1902 appears to be gearing up to be a year of major conflict!

Spring 02 due Monday, January 17 at 8:00 AM CST (2:00 PM GMT).

First, thanks to Chris for GMing this game, it's a lot of work and even though I was only a late replacement, he consistently performs better than your average GM.
And also kudos to Nathan and Jess, and I hope you all play more!

I should apologize to France for bungling the elimination of England.  I blame it on not playing a German invasion of England.  Usually it's the other way around!  Nathan's invasion of Scandinavia was well timed.  I thought I could sneak my fleet to help crush England and -- oops!

Congratulations to Italy and Austria -- you two really played well.  I had a solid lien to defend the stalemate, but I was looking for something more exciting.  And I got my rear end handed to me by a clever and resourceful player!  Humbling!

Well, I can't comment since I just tried to keep my
position, but your good play and my mistakes took a solid position into dust.  I voted for the draw since I knew I couldn't win once Italy broke through France and Austrian armies were camped outside my cities.

Thanks for letting me play!

Paul

First, a big thanks to Chris for keeping on top of this game for well over half a year. A great example of consistent and thorough GMing.

Jeff gets a lot of credit for standing by what had to be the Diplomacy equivalent of a trip to the DMV, playing out the grindingly slow fate of Turkey after so many glimmers of hope. Jess deserves no less praise for taking over a lost cause and defending the British Isles with a pair of armies – exciting work!

I owe my being in the draw to Sun's tenacious tactics in the center and unwavering dedication to the alliance. I spent years and years sparring with France and Turkey and owed a lot of my very haphazard and modest success in the west to luck (some convenient NMRs, though at least one bad one) and a messy situation in France that let me get some fleets behind the lines to hinder development long enough to give us a shot. Stopping the German invasion of England in 1913-14 was especially fun.

When Austria took Venice (to protect it from marauding Cossacks, of course!) in Fall 1904 I expected to play out the string of an ignominious collapse. Looking at the map tonight, it's easy to see all the positives of Austria's keeping me around: Turkey and Russia were still viable, Germany was bearing down on him, and I was keeping the French southern forces occupied with Spanish shell games. But I think my analysis in July was simpler: hope for the best!

I agonized over whether building A ROM in 1911 would put Austria on the defensive. At that point Germany and Russia were encircling him. To my shame I made a few confused moves with that army (not recognizing Austria's move out of PIE as a friendly changing of the guard, for example). In the end I think getting that army all the way to Turkey helped preserve the draw by balancing the east a bit more, to discourage too easy of a stab, but I wonder what would've been possible had that army been in Piedmont as I strongly suspect Sun intended.

Austria taking Venice in a friendly way was an interesting element. I'd add to Chris's list that the extra SC let Austria build another critically important army at a time when Sun's fights with Germany, Russia and Turkey required a lot of armies. One less army and one front would've collapsed for sure, especially the east where things were one bad guess away from disaster for a spell.

In Fleet Rome the specialization of Italy into fleets and Austria into armies is a little easier to take for granted from the start. If I'd had the extra army in Italy I would've been in a better position to defend Venice and the Austrian occupation might never have happened. A second army also may have given me the resources to stab Austria in hopes of linking up with Russia or Germany, though the way this game went I don't think that would've been wise in any event. F ROM went east in this game.

All the best,
Alex
