DC327 - F15 adjudication - bielf11   (Jan 04, 2011, 4:32 pm)
And if you wondered about the votes: there was less consensus on the EGPs proposed than in Spring. So yes, once more each of them was rejected.

dc357 Winter Blitz Game Start - Nigs   (Jan 04, 2011, 2:18 pm)
Hi Christine,

thanks for GM'ing - I hope we will produce an interesting game for you.

Guys: most of you I haven't played with before, but I will be the very cuddly, completely friendly Russia.

I'm based in the uk, so most likely to respond between about 7 am gmt and 11 pm gmt, particularly in the evenings.

This is my fourth time in this tournie, and in the last two round 1 games I was eliminated both times, so I'm hoping to at least survive in this one.

cheers

Nigs

Hi,

I'm Christine, I've been involved with online Diplomacy for quite a few years.  I've mostly retired from playing but still like to keep my hand in by GMing a game or two. Most of your names are new to me, I look forward to getting to know you all.

If you choose to scroll down to the bottom to read the player list, don't forget to come back at some point and read the official type stuff here at the beginning.

Deadlines will be 8 AM CST  GMT -6  1400 GMT.  I normally start adjudicating at the posted deadline.

A quick rundown of the tournament timing:
This is a fast paced game with short turn around.  Spring deadlines will occur every Monday. Fall deadlines will occur every Thursday, 3 days later. Then 4 days roll around again to Monday.
Retreats and/or Builds will always be due the day after results are out. That is Tuesday for Summer Retreats and Friday Retreats, Builds & Disbands.  Autumn Retreats will always be due at the same time as the Winter Adjustments.
There will be NO delays or extensions.
I may adjudicate early if all orders are received marked final ( this mainly applies to the adjustment phases).

While I try not to make mistakes, If at any time you find an error or dispute an adjudication you must contact me ASAP.  If any turn passes and there is an error on the board, we play on - players have 24 hours from the posting of any adjudication to contest the adjudication.

Order Email Address:

My email is dawench(at)hotmail.com
I also supply secondary address dawench2(at)lycos.com  You may use this address with every order set to help ensure I receive your orders.

The tournament has supplied a back up email address that it is important that you CC all orders to.  orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com   This not only helps ensure that your orders are received, but it also allows the Tournament committee to step in and adjudicate in case I am unable to.  Last Year I had a family emergency that caused me to miss a deadline.  Mike was able to step in and adjudicate because all the players CCd their orders to the back up address.

Tournament Rules are posted at http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php?display=rules

Diplomats,

Someone asked a question about how to facilitate my process of adjudication, and I realized that I'd not gone into that subject in my introduction. Anyways, here's the information to all of you.

1. Always include the name of the game in the subject line. That's "dc360" for this game. I run several games at DiplomaticCorp, and I always filter by the name of the game (I'm sure that I'm not the only one doing this...).

2. When sending orders for a turn, I'm perfectly fine with having a single conversation for a single turn. You do not have to update the subject line for each order set.

3. Please try to include the turn information in the subject line.

In order words, if you format the subject line like the following example I'll be very happy with you:

"dc360 - England Spring 1901"

4. If you use Realpolitik to enter your orders, you can copy and paste the orders from the "Orders" window in order to send them to me. If you do this, please include the name of the country as well as the orders, since then I can just
paste the orders directly into RP. This saves me a lot of time.

/Fredrik

Welcome to the Game Grid:

We have the results from our first spring orders.??As expected, Russia and Turkey provided our first bounce in the Black Sea. Everywhere else, there seems to be mass boredom with several units holding, and others retreating away from any conflicts.??

Hi, again!

In what is a stunning surprise to no one, I didn't get everything right on the first try.

1.  There is a single, shared blitz forum for all the tournament games.  Please use/view blitz(at)diplomaticcorp.com for all your WB needs.
2.  I forgot to attach a map.  Yeah, you probably don't need it, but I try to be thorough.  You know the names, right?  If you want a map with names on it just ask.

Hello and Welcome, one and all!  The 2011 Winter Blitz has officially begun.  You've been waiting by your Inbox for weeks now, anticipating the call to arms.  Well here it is, boys!  Here it is.

I'm Chris, and you lucky dogs have drawn me for your GM.  In case you didn't already know, I won this tournament last year.  Now I'm resting on my big, fat laurels while you guys get to have all the "fun."  Heh, heh.  (And if you should mistake my comments for cockiness, then you obviously aren't familiar with the current standings in the DC Invitational.
Go Chris!  Rock that 1-center Spain!)

This game is officially numbered DC 363.  It is Board 7 of Round 1 of the 2011 Winter Blitz tournament.  Throughout the game, you can check the on the game status on the DC web-site.  You can also post messages to the dc363 game forum, as copied above.  If you think maybe you missed an adjudication, the first step isn't to send me a panicky email.  Log on and see if the results are posted on-line.

Here are the rules.  http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/tournament.php?display=rules  They are important.  You are responsible for knowing them.  The TD's -- that's the Tournament Directors to
you lot
-- are real sticklers for every rule in there.  In particular, the deadlines are writ in stone.  You MUST get your orders in on time.  You MUST remember to copy the orders box at orders-at-diplomaticcorp-dot-com.  If I get hit by a bus and am lying unconscious in the hospital, the TD's will step in and adjudicate based on the copy of the orders you sent to the orders box.  If your orders aren't there, you get an NMR and your little receipt from me won't be worth jack.  I'll try to remind you if I notice you forgetting in the first couple of weeks, but soon you will be on your own.

Your first deadline in next Monday, January 10th.  Orders are due by 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, and
barring
some unforeseen exception, this is when orders will always be due in this game.  I think 8:00 p.m. (18:00) EST is 10:00 p.m. (22:00) GMT.  If I'm wrong, I hope one of you will be kind enough to correct me.

By the way, I will not usually be ready to adjudicate immediately at 6:00 p.m., but I need to reserve the right to do so. The
actual time of the adjudication may vary somewhat from night to night,
but the majority of the time you should be seeing the results between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. EST.  Yes, I WILL accept orders up until the point when I adjudicate, so if you should discover that you've just missed the deadline, DON'T GIVE UP.  Send me a quick heads up message immediately and then follow with your orders ASAP.

PLEASE be sure to label your emails accurately and completely.  Always include the game number, and when you're submitting orders I need to see the game number, country name, season and year in the subject line.  (e.g.  DC 363 - Italy Spring 1901).  Pardon me for being grumpy in advance, but I don't really care that you saved 5 seconds by just hitting Reply and leaving the subject line unchanged.  This isn't the only game I'm GM'ing or playing, so I really need to insist that you help me out in this way.  Thanks.

Here are your country assignments.  These were done randomly according to the following method.  1.  I listed all your names in random order.  2.  My daughter
drew the seven colors out of a hat in random order, with the first color drawn going to the first person in the list, second color to the second person, and so on.

DC 345: The Day After - AceRimmer   (Jan 03, 2011, 5:15 pm)
Last year, we saw the savage destruction of three once-glorious empires. But this morning, birds were singing, the sun was shining, and my daughter informed me that she could hear dinosaurs approaching. Life goes on, heedless of the corpses of the fallen.

There are an awful lot of successful moves this season. Indeed, if you tally those *unsuccessful* tags from the adjudications, there are only eight this season:

*Bounce* - 4
*Fails* - 2
*Cut* - 1
*Dislodged* - 1

Everything else proceeds according to plan.

Adaria accounts for half of those *tags*. Neatly, he has one of each: bounce, cut, dislodge, and fail. Trigspor, in contrast, got everything he wanted, including a pop gun for Christmas.

As you can infer from the above, there is one retreat. It belongs to Adaria. So, Maslow, which will it be? Fleet Smyrna retreats to: Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Syria, or off the board. Due tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. CST.

A more sober assessment of the turn notes that Itea at long last ends the unoccupied status of the North Sea, while Adaria consolidates his French holdings. Zonotrichia moves to complete his collector???s set of Turkish home centers, and he swaps centers with Trigspor as well. But with vacancies in Budapest, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Trieste, there is certainly dynamic tension in the Balkans.

I don???t want to alarm anybody, but we???re finally coalescing around some of the familiar mid-game country identities from Standard diplomacy (with occasional oddities). Adaria = France. Trigspor = Italy. Zonotrichia = Turkey. Hembria = Germany. Itea = Were-Hamsters. Okay, so not everybody is a traditional power yet.

WB Gamestart! DC366 Is Your Game - garry.bledsoe   (Jan 03, 2011, 3:20 pm)
Welcome to
the greatest show on earth!

WinterBlitz
2011!

I am happy to report to you that I get the pleasure of running your Rd 1 game for the tournament for the time being. Given the overwhelming number of entries
and boards this year (10, yes 10) we were running short on GMs so I am pulling
double-duty, GM and co-TD. So unless we get another member to step forward, I
will be running your game for the foreseeable future.

So on to
some business. Please read ALL the way through. This is a LOT of business to
attend to and important:

*  Our Winter
Blitz Round 1 game has been designated as dc366. Please make sure
that I am on your "safe" list with your email box so that emails from
me do not get caught in the spam filter!

*  As you may
note, WB Rules preclude country assignments and those have been selected and
are listed below. Note only one of you can say they got stuck with Italy (sorry
Benjy). It was random so blame the (at)randbetween function of Excel, not me.
Please feel free to introduce yourselves to everyone and to start your
diplomacy.

*  Since this
is a tournament game, there is a common set of rules and season deadlines that
all GMs are observing.  This can be found at www.diplomaticcorp.com/winterblitz
-- be sure to click the "Rules" option near the top of the main
screen once you go to this page.  You can also look at my House Rules on
the DC site. Where not overruled by WB rules, these rules prevail.

*  I ask that orders be precise and
appropriately labeled so I don't misunderstand them. Also, please note that I
rarely check orders ahead of time for accuracy so you may want to do so
yourself. If they are unclear, I will order them as a misorder. Typically I
give the benefit of the doubt (if you say A Ven and it was really a F in Ven
but the move order is valid for a F, I WILL move it). Thus, I have had some
players in the past who intentionally misordered (devious buggers) TELL me that
they were doing so so that I did not try to interpret their orders.

Would like you to submit in some
fashion like this:

 Subject: DC366: English
Orders (1)

  F Lon-NTH

  A Lpl-Yor

  F Edi-NWG

Note several things: a] I use both
the game number and name in the subject of my orders; b] I use a parenthetical
number to show the version number of the orders I am submitting and can then
update it in the future; c] I use ALL CAPS for sea spaces (just helps
to identify them as such); d] I used one of several alternate abbreviations for
Liverpool (I have also seen Lvp). On abbreviations, I am pretty open to most of
the standard ones (i.e. Gulf of Lyon is GOL in some versions of software and
LYO in others) but make sure the target space is clear. If you aren't sure
if the abbreviation works, ASK (or spell out the place).

*  For our deadlines we will use 6pm CST as our ongoing time for orders. CST
is GMT -6 for now (I think it changes when the US jumps to Daylight Savings Time
but we can address this if it becomes an issue). I will try to confirm receipt
of orders as they come in but can't always guarantee to do so. I am running
several games and playing several too. I did not expect to be filling in
full-time as a GM for this so I did not hold my GM/play schedule accordingly.
Because you can not be sure without my receipt, you should ALWAYS heed the next
note.

*  An important
note:
when submitting orders, make sure to include a cc: to orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com -- this is
for your protection in case your e-mail doesn't get through to me, or if I
am not available and need a substitute GM (likely Mike) to run a turn.

Just a
reminder of the schedule as laid out in the kickoff email:

Spring deadlines are Mondays.

Spring retreats are Tuesdays.

Fall deadlines are Thursdays.

Fall retreats AND Winter builds/disbands are Fridays. Builds CAN be conditional
upon a retreat but they MUST be clear.

Don't
forget to check out the game's page on the DC web site at www.diplomaticcorp.com/?game_id=dc366 -
I will update it after each adjudication.  I will also e-mail each
adjudication to everyone, as well as a .dpy game file for use in the
Realpolitik adjudication software. Additionally, my email is copied to blitz(at)diplomaticcorp.com. NOTE: this
is the message board for the tournament (all games and press get posted there)
so IF you copy it instead of the "orders" box it will be public. DON'T do
that!!! Probably hazardous to your tournament health.

Press is
allowed and encouraged. For those that are new, press is simply generic
messages that are made public as a part of the turn's results. Typically press
is just generic silliness that may or may not pertain to the game. There is
actually some good press in the DC274 game so you can read the different turns
on that game to see some examples.

OUR GAME
IS ON! The spring 1901 deadline is Monday, January 10 at 6pm
Central (US) / 24:00 GMT

Please
everyone send me provisional orders ASAP. Because this is a tournament game,
turns are adjudicated without full order sets; however, if I don't get
provisionals by Thursday I will enter an alternate in the game - we will not
start without a full complement of players.

PERSONAL
NOTE: I abhor abandonments and Civil Disorders. Please don't have that mar our
game. I understand that life happens and that accidents happen. NMR's sometimes
happen (turns where a player has no moves requested); HOWEVER, we do not need
them to lead to abandonment. Game abandonment WILL put you on my bad list
forever (not a good thing given that I am a site moderator). If something comes
up please write me and we can discuss options. I understand that games are
sometimes not fun if things look bleak but our DCI tournament from last year
should be a lesson to us all - holding patiently onto a bad position sometimes
yields a win (Adam won the tournament game and had a 3 center Austria DEEP into
the game). Enough said.

So let's see who got what in the
random formula!

 Hey all,

I'm John, your friendly neighborhood GM for your first round of the Blitz. I'm sure we have quite a wild ride ahead of us, and I'll do my best to keep us moving toward the finish line. Exactly what happens along the way, however, depends completely on you. I've been on the DC website for a few years now, and an active dip player for years before that, so I'm excited to see so many faces I don't recognize. In fact, I think I've only played against one of you before.

I know you guys want the GM to stop yacking and get to the country assignments. So go ahead and take a look:

I assigned these using the random number function in Excel, so blame microsoft if you don't like what you got!

Now for a couple very important points:
Deadlines - Spring deadlines on Mondays, Summer retreats on tuesdays, Fall deadline on Thursdays, and Retreats/Winter COMBINED on Fridays. Unless I specifically say otherwise, all deadlines are at 8:00 AM CST (This is, I believe, 6 hours behind GMT). We appear to have quite the international group here, so I'll do my best to list deadlines in CST and GMT times. However, if there is ever a discrepency, the CST will be supercede the GMT time. Also, I will do my best to send out deadline reminders to you guys, BUT it is ultimately YOUR responsibility to turn in moves regardless of whether a reminder is set out.

Orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com - This little email address is your best friend. ANY time you send moves/builds/retreats/revisions/etc to me, you should also be sending it to that address as well. The reason being, if I am unable to adjucate after being attacked by rapid were-hamsters, one of the tournament directors will adjucate using the orders you sent to this address. Also, if I have no record of your moves for some reason, and you just *know* you sent them in, this address will be your last and best defense to avoid the dreaded NMR.

Prelims - Prelims are your second best friends. I'd suggest turning them in immediately after receiving the adjucation. You can always change them, but you never know when something will come up and you will be unable to turn in moves. I even accept Contingency plans (especially for retreats and builds). So feel to even send those in advance too, just in case!

Rule questions - I will follow the most recent rules published for diplomacy (5th edition, wizards of the coast). When unclear, or when deemed necessary in my sole opinion, my judgement supercedes the rulebook. During Blitz games, DC houserules generally take precedence as well, and blitz rules trump everything. For example, there are NO replacements in the Blitz. If you drop out, your country will NMR every turn, but you can start playing again at any time until your last piece/center is eliminated/captured. If you have any questions about how I will treat any specific issue, just ask. This is also a good time to repeat the 24 hour cutoff. If you have a complaint or issue with an adjucation, you have 24 hours to report it to me. If you don't, the "wrong" adjucation stands.

Press and proper play - This game is black press, which means you can submit comments for inclusion in the adjucation from you, purporting to be from another player or country, or anonymously. However, no one may at any time, in press, private communication with other players, or for any other reason, impersonate me or the tournament directors. Doing so is grounds for immediate explusion from the game.

Ok, enough will all the rules. Let's get this show on the road! Our first deadline is MONDAY, JANUARY 10th at 8:00 AM CST (2:00 PM GMT).

Feel free to share you strategy and goals with me. I can't comment on them for obvious reasons, but it helps me feel a bit more a part of the game to see things from a player's perspective in addition to the bird's eye view GM's are often left with.

Now I'll step aside and let the stabbing commence!!!!

John

Subject: Re: dc360 - Winter Blitz 2011 Round 1 Start

/Fredrik

WB11 - Welcome! - FuzzyLogic   (Jan 03, 2011, 12:01 pm)
Hey everyone, and welcome to the 4th Annual Winter Blitz!

This is about to be the best Winter Blitz ever.  We've got 70 entrants for a whopping 10 boards of play!  I will be one of your hosts - my name is Mike, and along with my Co-TD Garry we will be bringing you this little tournament.  If you have any questions, concerns, or even compliments, send them on to one of us and we'll get back to you ASAP.

This year our tournament is going to be put on by 6 returning vets from the WB10, plus 3 new GMs for this year.  That's Christine, Cory, John, Fredrik, Vegas, Darryl, Chris, Hamish, and Brian.  Remember to tip your GM!  Without their help the WB would not be possible.  Of course if you would like to be a part of a future WB team just let us know...

Also just for 2011, we have a special bonus as thoughthammer.com has offered to sponsor our little event by upping our prize fund by 50%.  This should make the competition all that more fierce - and remember even if you have a bad showing in round 1, stick around for round 2 as there are separate prizes for each round.

Now before we get started, a few things to go over...

* If you cannot play, now is the time to let me know!

* Remember this is a speedy tournament (for PBEM).  Time is of the essence.  GMs are not going to track you down for orders each turn, they will just put out the results w whatever they have turned in.  There is no Civil Disorder, so if you NMR, you are still in the game and can continue to play on!  Never give up - never surrender!

* If you ever spot a problem with an adjudication, it is imperative that you bring it up quickly.  There is a 24-hour hard cutoff for bringing up any issues in a game.  Once 24 hours passes, the window to bring up any errors in the adjudication is closed, and things will stand as adjudicated.  Also if you do raise a challenge, be able to respond readily to your email.  In order to keep the games on track, we have to close any issues shortly after we open them.

* When submitting orders, be sure to copy orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com every submission.  This can only help you, and failing to do so can only hurt you.  1) It is a backup, in case a GM cannot find your orders, to which we can look to see if something you sent just got lost.  And 2) it is there for when a GM is not available and we, your moderators, have to cover a turn for them.  In such cases, we will adjudicate with whatever orders we find were copied to orders(at)diplomaticcorp.com.  If yours weren't, they will not be counted in those cases!

* Winter retreats and builds are combined into one turn, every Friday.  Do not wait for retreats to turn in your builds, cuz once retreats come out, the build turn is done!  If you're not sure if you'll get a build or not, (a retreat could alter the course) then turn something in, just in case.  You can use conditionals, like "If he retreats here, build this, but otherwise build that."

* Each member has been subscribed to the Winter Blitz forum with a Weekly Digest.  This means each Saturday, you should get an overall email summarizing all the adjudications and everything that went on the past week.  If you *don't* want to receive this weekly email, you can adjust your subscriptions in your profile.  Note any press or general interest stuff that you post to the Winter Blitz forum will go out to all 70 members and our administrators in that weekly digest.  You can post two ways - either via email, to blitz(at)diplomaticcorp.com, or by visiting the site - but make sure you don't send your orders to the blitz forum!

Stay tuned, you should be hearing from your GM in the next day with your game starts.

Enjoy,

-mike

EGPs: we have never been so close to an agreement but yet again none of the
proposals have been accepted.
The exact same proposals are on the table again for this Fall:
1) DIAS, and
Two 4-way draws:
2) Aetolia Arcolia Laconia Attica
3) Arcolia Laconia Attica Boeotia
Two 3-way draws:
4) Aetolia Arcolia Laconia
5) Attica Arcolia Laconia

Aetolia clearly hasn't been forgiven its earlier ambitions to dominate the
Greeks: the army in Achaia is destroyed by a joint effort of two powers.
And
surprisingly Elia did not support the convoy of the Aetolian army in Ilia
to
Sicily. Or isn't it and is this the first sign of a breach in what seemed
to
be a solid alliance?

No retreats required.
Fall 15 deadline, also for EGP votes, is Jan 2 at 7pm GMT. You'll probably
all need the extra days with the festivities ahead.
Happy New Year to all of you. That 2011 may bring you many Solos and other
crushing victories (No, not at all implying that a Draw might not be a
suitable end for this game).
