Come on- especialy Athens, who has NEVER replied to me. For the Gods of this world spare us all a long slow defeat, better still turn me into a bird so i can do droppings on the Athenian King

Gosh, Max, thanks for the warm fuzzies!  Love you, too.

Michael, I'm assuming the concession proposal failed, but you didn't even mention it, which you really should so we can be certain it wasn't just forgotten about.

Also, what are the HR about proposals?  Is a failure to vote counted as a vote against any draw/concession proposal?

And finally, can you remind me what the victory criteria is?  Max, perhaps Persia isn't that far away from the magic number, so this could be over soon even without an Athenian vote.

Thanks,

Marc

Yep, proposal failed.  I mentioned in the spring results.

There is a similar proposal for this fall, due Thu / 16.

A failure to vote or even NMR is counted as a vote against any EGP.  i.e. all players must affirmatively agree to end a game for it to be ended prematurely.

Victory condition...

4) There are 38 supply centers. Victory's condition is possession of 20 centers at the end of any Fall retreat.

Given the circumstances, I am voting for the concession. As there is little interest remaining in this game, I implore all other players to do the same. It's time to put this game to bed, which has never been a thing of beauty in any event. Almost since the beginning we have suffered a lack of interest and good play, so can we just end this thing? Thank you.

DC325 Imterra Russian EOG - Sean2010   (Dec 10, 2010, 10:02 am)
Congradulations to Matt, Kevin, and Tim for their 3-way Draw.

Thank you, Garry for GMing this one.

Russian End of Game Statement:

In the beginning, as I mentioned to Garry, I had recently played Russia, and I was hoping to gain another country to avoid double playing a country. Since I recieved Russia, I made it a priority to avoid making the same mistakes; I've made previously. Interestingly, I feel that I made the same error; despite, the error came about differently and a somewhat different location.

In western Europe, I attempted to form encouraging arrangements with England and France while I aggressively sought friendly relations with Germany. Inevitably, I wanted to avoid encouraging an Anglo-Franco alliance; especially, I didn't want to dive westward without knowing my southern relations and aid Anglo-Franco relations in attacking Germany.

In eastern Europe, I tried to perform a balancing act until I could determine which policy approach held the best outcome, so I had made friendly relations with Austria, Italy, and Turkey.

After the opening year, I felt very good with an alliance with AIR; especially since, I had a solid relationship with Germany. I believed that if Austria-Italy decided to cut me out of AIR; I'd be able to maintain my relationship with Germany. What I didn't note soon enough, Germany was increasingly becoming fearful of AIR likely encouraged by England and France.

By the third year, AIR had forced a counter-Anglo-Franco-German triple alliance, and I had lost what influence I had with Germany. It's also when my balancing act in my relationships between Germany and Austria-Italy collapsed. I didn't believe that it was in my interests to cut myself out of AIR. In my opinion, even if I campaigned harder, France would have remained concerned with Italy, and Germany wasn't likely to pursue even a mild strategy placing him on a 2-front war. Inevitably, I stand at my opinion that AIR was my best shot.

Inevitably, AIR would only last 1.5 years before it imploded at my hand.

By F05, Austria was in position that he could have used the Franco-Italian line and Anglo-Russo line to launch himself into a soloable position, and defended himself at the same time. Based on his position, I launched envoys into establishing a counter, which ultimately failed, and I launched what I thought was going to be a failed counter-stab.

A Tyr-Vie (Would have bounced)

A Tri-Ser (Would have bounced)

A Bul-Rum

A Bud S A Bul-Rum

A Sil-War (Would have been overpowered)

A Boh-Gal (Would have bounced)

I would have lost Rum, but I would have at least kept Austria from attaining position to maintain his stab.

As it turned out, Austria didn't launch his stab, and my move turned into a catch-22. If I hadn't acted, I would have been crushed in a full 2-front war. In the end, this action cost me Austrian-Russo relations, which would effect me in the long-run.

This imploded AIR, and this changed the map's dynamics dramatically. England and France dismantled Germany, Austria-Franco dismantled Italy, and for a time Austria-Russo simply swayed back and forth while Anglo-Russo ceased and desisted conflict.

By the 1908, it appeared that England was becoming soloable to me, and I attempted to get France and Austria to counter it before it became virtually unstoppable. I was hoping to accomplish three things here:

1). Prevent an English solo.

2). Rebuild Austrian-Russo relations.

3). Provide a circumstance that Austrian-Russo could find a dualable situation.

I suspect several things occurred here:

1). France likely realized that England was soloable but with a strong and early Austrian-Franco-Russo counter; neither France nor England would attain a winning seat. I strongly suspect that the next issue was encouraged by France especially as well as England.

2). Austria decided to bang me over the head with my catch-22ed move. As open as I attempted to make myself to Austria, Austria didn't want to leave my move unpunished, and he did a very good job.

This was certainly a formidable and fun game.

Congradulations again to Tim, Kevin, and Matt on their 3-way draw.

Thank you again, Garry, for GMing this one.

from Sean

We have peace! By continental consent, we have an Anglo-Catholic Peace shared amongst England, France and Austria. The remaining Russian outposts have agreed to survive on as subject states to the shared TriArchy.

Congrats to Kevin, Tim and Matt for the draw and to Sean for holding on for the survival until the end. I appreciate the players who stuck it out even when elimination seemed inevitable.

All in all an interesting and good game. It had a few moments where I thought that it could turn into more than a 3-way but that just never seemed to materialize. 2-ways are hard in non-tournament situations because there is always the fear of a stab.

I would love EGS's from anyone who wants to share them. I will make sure they get posted and you can copy the dc325(at)diplomaticcorp.com email address to make sure they hit the message board.

Spring 1911 orders will be due next Thursday at 6pm CST (9 December).

Remember to vote for the 3-way AEF.

As a side note, France has confirmed that he is here. The deadline was very short last time out and that caught him unawares. I apologize that my short deadline might have impacted the game (but seemingly did not).

dc325 Imterra - Anglo-Catholic Peace Accords of 1911 (dc325) garry.bledsoe Dec 09, 11:30 pm

My pleasure to serve you all.

Hey, hey, Gumballers!

You know when you see that greeting that the GM is excited.  And what excites your GM?  Action... destruction... pain and misery on a continent-wide scale!  Leg-pullers and head-scratchers!  We've got it all this round, folks.  Check it out!  We've got

1.  Convoys -- That's a big 10-4.  France lands an army in Angleterre.
2.  Disbandments -- The Russian army in Sevastopol goes "Poof!"
3.  Double Dislodgements -- Germans push the Austrians out of Warsaw and Tyrolia... which leads to
4.  Fall Backs -- Two Austrian armies looking for new lodging.

5.  Glowering Gauls -- The Italians and French are still staring at each other in Iberia.
6.  A Smattering of Silliness -- Don't miss the Belgian orders.
7.  Roman Legions on the March -- Here comes the Italian army.
8.  Dead Ends in the Desert (?) -- Army Armenia alliterates almost all alone.
9.  Summer Sailing -- Where are the German fleets going?
10.  Exciting Elections -- The AFI challenger was going strong for a while, but ran out of gas in the end.  4 YEA, 1 NAY, 1 Abstention.
11.  Odd Endings -- Because 11 is one more than 10.  (Smell the Glove!  Spinal Tap rules!)

RETREATS:  Austria (x2).  A Warsaw is auto-retreated to Livonia.  This may be changed to OTB if desired.  A Tyrolia has his choice of Vienna or Trieste or Piedmont or OTB.  Please submit retreat orders by 8:00 p.m. tomorrow,
EST.

Cheers,
Chris

DC344: Soloism vs Drawism - charlesf   (Dec 07, 2010, 3:30 pm)
First of all, thank you for all your feedback. I do
recognize that I should have been more flexible regarding SU's
approaches for a rapprochement. Kyle has a point in that I don't
have the morale for accusing others of sticking too long with
their alliances. But regarding the reaction to the BI attack, I
must say I would have done the same again. If I'm under attack
of a superior coalition and I don't see any diplomatic avenues
open, I always go for the strategy of creating imbalances in the
coalition by favouring one of the sides.

Hi Joao, aiming for such imbalances is common practice. But it's
rather less common for players going as far as giving up all
resistance vis-à-vis one party.

I'm not saying that such an extreme approach cannot work. It's just
that in combination with your other decisions, I believe it was
destined to fail.

The point
here is that, in my opinion, the spirit of the game is to put
strategic considerations before personal considerations about
players' abilities, style or game approach. From my point of
view, these should be a blank paper when the game starts and
evolve as the game goes on (that's why I favour gunboat games).

I definitely subscribe to a clean slate approach when it comes to
playing a game with folks I've encountered in previous games.
However antagonistic that past experience may have been, I approach
the new game in as unprejudiced and open-minded manner as possible.
Much as I consider a game a self-contained unit and do not care what
my actions within that game might mean for my reputation following
the game.

It's not
only that other players were able to forge relationships that
almost seemed unnatural to the game, it's also that some players
feared having alliances with me because they knew that sooner or
later I would stab them if they don't stab me first - well,
isn't that the whole point of playing?

The point of the game is winning. Not stabbing. Though in all
likelihood, you'll have to engage in some of the latter to attain
the former.

Though actually in my recent 1900 solo, I only stabbed one in the
game. Most of the time, it was I who got stabbed, but just happened
to gain the upper hand in the ensuing melée. It's not like I
actually wanted to get stabbed (as Bismarck masterfully got Napoleon
III to stab him in 1870, but won the ensuing Franco-German War). But
it all worked out nicely enough. Sadly can't claim the brilliant
foresight of Otto von Bismarck.

This is why I do hope the next 1936 game I play is
in a tournament context, where by definition only one player can
win and therefore "soloism", which for me is equivalent to Dip's
spirit, is encouraged.

Quite. The 1936 tournament we're planning shall be a sweet
social-darwinistic affair. Qualifying for the championship game will
take a few elbows. Smile The more first round boards we can set up
(seven would be ideal, we've currently got four GMs), the more
"soloist" shall things become.

Though with the right qualification rules, the scramble for first
place will be bound to be intense. Much as for Joao, this is music
to my ears! Looking forward to the show.

Another option is to establish a
DIAS only rule. In this particular case, it would have forced
the game to continue, since Jimmy says he was determined to
eliminate me and Dirk really wanted a 3-way, not a 4 or 5-way
draw, which means that I, Dan and Kyle would have to be
eliminated and that BGI would have to find a 17, 17, 16 formula.
If in that scenario one of them wouldn't have tried the solo, in
a variant with untested stalemate lines, well, my faith in Dip
would diminish a lot Wink

Any player still in a game can effectively turn it into a DIAS-only
game. He just needs to hold out.

Cheers,

Charles
