DC309 Spring 1909 Results - Game Over - blueinva   (Sep 15, 2010, 9:39 pm)
Guys,

I know Phil wishes it was me that had said I'd wipe him
off the board, but my exact words were that: "You have now sealed the end of
your game. You will be able to wound me - take a SC here and there, but I will
be giving France full rein to push into your middle whilst you struggle to deal
with the fleets that will pour back East. Never stab in the spring... position,
position, position." Prophetic huh? Your
game ended on that turn when you dove one turn too early for the solo and ended
up with a four way draw. If Phil had stuck to the agreement we
shared, he probably could have soloed by grabbing Dan and John SCs faster
than I could keep up, as it was, a four way draw is probably the best he
could have hoped for - if Dan hadn't shown himself to be such an awesome player
I might have trusted him enough to have pushed to take Turkey off the board
and out of the draw.

Phil, no worries about the voting down of the draw, you
had to hope that one of us got as greedy as you did! *grin*

Well, I certainly won't apologize for holding up the ending of
this game by a couple of extra turns.  With all of Sean's trash talking
about how he was going to wipe me off the face of the board, I had to give him
the opportunity to try.  Fortunately for everyone, except me obviously, you
three held together.  So, you guys have fun bashing me for turning the
screws on your impromptu alliance.  I just had to see what would
happen.

Actually Sean, the quote I'm referring to is:

"I was always taught that you stab when your victim is
losing SCs. I will be down a max of one am now publicly stating that I will be
pulling all of my fleets off the Western front and won't be stopping until
Constantinople is mine. Dan, John, you got your wish guys - I'm onboard with
taking Austria down."

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that if you took Constantinople, I would have been in trouble.  Smile

Well, there was definitely something about this game that got under my skin.  I'm always frustrated by large draws.  They strike me as cowardly.  But, I'm always ready for a rematch with this group.

Hey All,

After nine years, a compromise to end the war in Europe has finally been reached. The governments of France, Austria, Italy and Russia have agreed to a four way draw. However, the proposal to reveal past votes fails. I have it on good authority that the reason for past draw failures will be revealed now that hostilities have ended.

Thanks to everyone for playing! It was fun to watch you all duke it out - especially after having just played with many of you!

I usually publish EOGs a week after a game I'm running ends. If you want to do it that way, send your thoughts to me, and I'll send everybody's out next Wednesday. Alternatively, you can all start broadcasting now!

I'll send some of my thoughts out later on. The pregnant wife wants to watch TV!

Best,

Mike

Well, there was definitely something about this game that got under my skin.  I'm always frustrated by large draws.  They strike me as cowardly.  But, I'm always ready for a rematch with this

My only concern is that we're headed right into the holidays, which might prove quite disruptive to the mid game when all the action's really happening. If we could commit to a really brisk schedule it could work, but I want to be sure I leave a slot for Winter Blitz when that starts.

Ooh. good point on the blitz. I'm already in two pretty intense games, and I plan to gm and play in the blitz. That would put me at 5 games for round one, and if some of those overlap round two I could have up to 7. that would not be fun. At the same time, since we all know each other now, these games require a little less "foundational" diplomacy. So I'm good with whatever...

7 way?  That sounds like a bad porno.

I'm of the opinion that if you can't at least narrow it down to three
people, you've kinda wasted a bunch of time.  Though, with a 7 way draw,
I'm assuming very little time was wasted.

I'm only in one other game right now, and I see no obstacles to me
soloing that one (Hi John!).  So I'm ready to go.  But I understand
people have stuff to do.  I can handle a brisk pace, or I can say
farewell to y'all until after the Blitz.  Unless I see you in the
Blitz.  In which case, I'd be saying farewell until the Blitz.  How
about this...

Farewell until (after) the Blitz.  Unless we play a brisk game.  Crap.

My only concern is that we're headed right into the holidays, which might prove quite disruptive to the mid game when all the action's really happening. If we could commit to a really brisk schedule it could work, but I want to be sure I leave a slot for Winter Blitz when that starts.

Best,

Mike

Yeah. The 7 way draw was awful. We had two replacement players by the end of 1902, and one NMR and delay after another. We just all hated it and cut our losses.

I'm good with a game if we want to do quick deadlines. I don't even mind GMing, but I do like playing, so I guess I'd do whatever someone else didn't want to. But yeah, maybe even like Blitz schedule speed. One game year per week. That would put us close to 10 game years in by the time the blitz started. I'd be in.

7 way?  That sounds like a bad porno.

I'm of the opinion that if you can't at least narrow it down to three people, you've kinda wasted a bunch of time.  Though, with a 7 way draw, I'm
assuming very little time was wasted.

I'm only in one other game right now, and I see no obstacles to me soloing that one (Hi John!).  So I'm ready to go.  But I understand people have stuff to do.  I can handle a brisk pace, or I can say farewell to y'all until after the Blitz.  Unless I see you in the Blitz.  In which case, I'd be saying farewell until the Blitz.  How about this...

Farewell until (after) the Blitz.  Unless we play a brisk game.  Crap.

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1910 Results - Corrino   (Sep 15, 2010, 7:53 pm)
Great Galloping Gumballs!  Can you believe we're starting our 10th year together?  The sun may or may not set on the British Empire, but the fun never stops on Gumball Street!.

Highlights of the season:

. England and Turkey are still holding their own for now, but the pressure isn't easing in the least.

. Italy and France butt heads again.  Inconclusive, again, but look out!  Here comes a new green fleet.  Will this be the one to break the deadlock?  I'm guessing... sorry, I can't say.

. Austria and Germany set their armies up in a very attractive line, while Russia wisely extricates himself from the middle of the big boys' skirmish.  Pundits predict a lot of boot stamping and gun waving, but not much in the way of movement
for a while.

RETREATS:  None.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1910 is due Wednesday, September 22, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

The correct response is why is Holland concerned with Mongolia...

But seriously, as will all Dip games the Most Certain way to get your orders right is to use RP or RW (links are under Downloads on the DC Site, both are VERY light weight installs, open source apps) and after entering your moves, copying your moves from the Orders menu item as our hallowed GM suggests.

Most GMs will love you for that courtesy.

When you have the variant loaded into Realworld, select Windows from
the menu bar, then Info.  Scroll down and you'll get a full list of
map spaces by name and the abbreviation's RW is programmed to
accept.  The 2x sized map available at
http://mainecav.org/diplomacy/dc342 was intended to help with hard
to read names and hard to see borders.

In RW, under Map, you can toggle things on and off to help you see;
units, SCs, "other land," and Names.  Names will post the "official"
abbreviations in little boxes over their spaces - I can't say they
help me at all, but they may help you.

Other than that, yes, I will make assumptions when I load your
orders and see a movement arrow shoot across the map from SIA to HOL
because you typed A SIA-Hold and RW interpreted it as A Sia-Hol
because you put a dash in it.  You can order your units in RW, open
Windows, Orders, and copy & paste your orders into your email.

In the list of orders there, you'll also see: "A Somewhere, no move
received" which tells you you missed one.  In a game this size,
missing a unit in orders is easy to do - use RW to help you.

Please read the section of my house rules on Orders Format.  Orders
like (F) swe, -fin are a pain because I have to edit out commas,
parens, etc, to get them into a format RW will take.  There will be
a LOT of individual orders in this game and the more I have to fix
orders, the more can be missed.

That quick, and we've been assigned our Diplomatic Corp ID, DC342,
which makes it official - we've begun.

To that end, you see, I've assigned a deadline for the first set
of orders which gives you about 8 days to lie to each other.  I
live in US Eastern Time (Maryland) which is -5 hours of UTC so
2359 UTC is 1859 EDT.  I use 2359 to avoid confusion.  Most
everyone is bloody late all the time anyway.  If you can't read a
24 hour clock - you're kidding, right?

I didn't come up with a catchy name for our game.  If you have
something to suggest, send it along.  If you get something good to
me quick, you won't have to spend the next year looking at
"Imperial Margarine" or something like that.

As usual, for me, all files; maps RealWorld DPWs, orders, etc will
be kept in the dc342 folder of the Diplomacy Tribune and that URL
will be at the bottom of all adjudications.

All "official" public emails regarding this game will have the
subject line above (or whatever catchy name we come up with) and
will be copied to the DipCorp forum.  When the game's section is
up on the forum - do go there and SUBSCRIBE to it.  It's also
there for you to use for open press, smack talk, and calling for
game end votes - ie: anything to everyone regarding dc342.

Do read my house rules and keep in mind that I'm an
obsessive-compulsive slob - I'm a mess, but it must be 'just-so.'

I'm usually pretty timely in getting out adjudications.  If I'm
late, it's probably because one or more of you is late.  This has
delayed things at times for a day, even two, but seldom longer
than that.

Jerry

Your friendly neighborhood GM.

Eastern Ukraine, Crimean Peninsula, Sevastopol

The tides of war never stop turning - a lesson the Polish troops occupying the Eastern Ukraine by now will have learned. The recent days might be a turning point in the sheer unstoppable advance of the Polish Armed Cavalry, their ranks bolstered by the tanks of their German allies. After having won one of the bloodiest battles of the war so far at Sevastopol, burning two thirds of the strategically important city to ashes, the Soviet remnants were driven into the countryside, scattering in the snow-covered plains. The more surprised was the Polish Generality, as the reconnaissance found the remaining Soviet Army holding on to Stalingrad advancing in full force towards Sevastopol. With the Polish line of communication constantly harassed by Soviet attacks, the lines of defense built slower tan expected, and more forces were relocated to meet the desperate Soviets in the plains before they could once again dig in the ruined streets of Sevastopol. A small series of skirmishes began, drawing more and more attention to the north towards Kharkov and away from the Crimean Peninsula. Polish troops closed in on the Soviet army, trying to cut the route to Stalingrad and circumvent it southwards - expecting to be the anvil for the Polish hammer from Moscow to fall - they took the bait Stalin had prepared...

With the coastal lines of Odessa and Sevastopol only defended with a minimum garrison, Turkish troops launched a major naval assault and amphibious landing. Within 3 days, the Turkish troops were able to secure a coastal strip as far as 60 km inland from Odessa and 85  km inland from Sevastopol, amassing heavy artillery and AT guns in the area. While in the north-east, the Soviet army withdrew, the Polish found themselves with one option left: retreat to Kiev, now facing a closed Turkish front line ranging from Chisinau, Moldavia to Zaporozhye, Eastern Ukraine. The tides of war never stop turning, they say...

Ahem. On that undignified note let us review the world headlines from the last 6 months before dipping back into the boiling cauldron. Mr. Murrow?
On January 10 the U.S. Congress approved Lend-Lease, to provide war supplies to European allies.
The first fully electronic computing device, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, is described in print for the first time on January 15.
On February 23 Glenn T. Seaborg isolates and discovers plutonium.
The first radio station in the world to broadcast on the improved FM band, W47NV in Nashville, Tennessee, begins broadcasting.
In an alternate universe, on March 30, a German Lorenz code machine operator sent a 4,000 character message twice, allowing British mathematician Bill Tutte to decipher the coding mechanism.
On April 19 celebrated playwright Bertolt Brecht staged an anti-war play, Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder in Zurich.
In late April the political jockeying around U.S. involvement in World War 2 begins to boil. Charles Lindbergh keynotes the first mass rally of the America First Committee. President Franklin D. Roosevelt publicly criticizes the American hero resulting in his resigning his commission in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve.
On May 1 the first Defense Bonds and Defense Savings Stamps go on sale in the United States and will fund greatly increased production of military equipment.
Also on May 1 a product called "breakfast cereal" is introduced by General Mills. Called "CheeriOats", it would go on to become Cheerios.
Also on May 1 the movie Citizen Kane premieres in New York City.
In an alternate universe, on May 9 German sub U-110 is captured. On board is the latest Enigma cryptography machine which Allied cryptographers use to break coded German messages.
On May 12 Konrad Zuse presents the Z3, the world's first working, programmable, fully automatic computer in Berlin.
4,000 Chongqing civilians are asphyxiated in a bomb shelter during the Japanese Bombing of Chongqing on June 5.
In an alternate universe, on June 13 TASS, the official Soviet news agency, denies reports of tension between Germany and the Soviet Union.

And now, for a GM's best friend, player press!

I'll retreat to Brest. OTB isn't happening, and going to Spain would be silly. That's final. You can adjudicate it whenever you like.

Diplomats,
Waiting those 12 hours might have lessened the mistakes, but unfortunately I still made a small mistake.
Sun had ordered his Vienna army to Tyrolia, not to Trieste as I had entered it. The move caused his unit to bounce with Dirk's movement north from Milan and Rome, causing both those units to halt in their tracks. As far as I can tell there were no further consequences of the mistake.

You should find an updated image with the final positions of all units along with this mail.

DC309 Spring 1909 deadline reminder - mtombu   (Sep 14, 2010, 7:35 am)
Hey All,
Orders are due tomorrow at 9 pm ET. Remember to also vote on the FAIR draw proposal as well as on the proposal to release voting information for the recent failed draw proposals. Also remember that we are now one year into the two year period without substantive change required to force a DIAS draw. Baring a change in circumstance (dislodgment, SC change or other development that implies the latter is forthcoming) the game will be declared a draw at the end of this game year. Mark your orders final and I'll adjudicate early!

Best,
Mike

Diplomats,
I'm terrribly sorry for the delay in the adjudication this season. Some people asked for the reason for the delay and it was simply due to a hectic day yesterday. I'm quite sure that had I done the adjudication yesterday evening I would have made a lot of mistakes in the adjudication, so I felt better doing it this morning.

I am not usually willing to give extensions to a deadline once it has been given. If you are in need of a longer deadline, give me a notice before the fact and I'm sure that we can work out a schedule that works for everyone. We do have the one 24-hour grace period for everyone that can be used if you forget to send me orders. So far noone has used up their grace period. When that sets in I will give notice to everyone that we are entering a grace period, but I will not disclose who is causing it. The players who are causing it will be noticed though in a separate mail.

Now back to the game:We have disagreements in the west over who shall get Gibraltar, and France manages to grab that vital piece of land in front of the Brits. In the east we have the Russians being pushed out of Warsaw by a German army, Britain entering Sweden and Austria pushing into the Russian lands. Russia however manages to enter the Black Sea and therefore saves his Army from being crushed out of existence.

We have a single retreat that is due, and that is the Army in Warsaw. With only a single province to retreat to I auto-retreated the unit. If you want to retreat off the board instead Frank, give me a holler within 24 hours.

Diplomats,
Waiting those 12 hours might have lessened the mistakes, but unfortunately I still made a small mistake.

Diplomats,
I've had several people tell me that they'd prefer to have the major turns due on Mondays, as had been the case for a few turns. I myself had a hard time keeping the schedule this week as we were busy last night.

I currently have a full set of orders from everyone for the Fall. Despite that I've decided to extend the deadline until Monday. From now on the major turns will be due on Mondays, and the minor turns will be due on Wednesday, with both Autumn and Winter being due on the same day.

I want to thank you all for turning in orders on time continuously. So far noone has used their grace period, and we are progressing nicely.

Next turn: Fall 1902 MovementNext Deadline: Monday, 20th of September 2010, 18:00 GMT (6PM).
