The English have a funny way of rubbing off their principles wherever they go. We do not need anymore leaders the like of the Shah in our "near abroad".
Also, Sun never said please like Nick did.
Agreed on the press. It was great!

A new restaurant called McDonalds opens in San Bernardino, California on May 15. The locals are going there in droves.
The Chinese NRA is soundly defeated in a counter-offensive against the Japanese IJA. Experts claim this is the last gasp for a potential Chinese offensive. While Japanese control of large areas of China remains the status quo the occupiers are struggling to adequately garrison their expansive holdings; further expansion bogs down.
While there were multiple disbands there are only two retreats: the German army in Munich can retreat to Hamburg, Rheinland or Disband; the Polish army in the Eastern Ukraine may retreat to Western Ukraine or Disband. And now, for a GM's best friend, player press!
Italian Press:
It has been announced that President Mussolini is paying a state visit to Munich. El Duce will be speaking to the people of Bavaria, the beating heart of German fascism, and offering to make them part of the thus-far successful European fascist experiment. While he understands that nationalistic sentiment has previously been the key to fascism, a pan-European fascist state has long been a dream of his.
Mussolini said, 'We believe that it was a mistake for the German people to have deposed the National Socialists. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and we were flattered when the Germans copied we Italians in placing thugs and murderers in high office. Them heading down the path of democracy provides a bad example to fledgling dictatorships all over the world. Oppression and bigotry and acts of aggression against peaceful nations are fragile flowers that need constant tending against the diseases of freedom, amity and equality. Hopefully, Germans will come to understand their error. If they don't, we'll shoot them.'

Press from the USSR:
Beirut, New Khanate of Libanon, January 23rd
Reports from the Levante confirm the rumors spreading in the east - the Soviet Leadership has evacuated the burning steppes of their homeland. Several limousines with turkish military escort have been seen waiting in the military part of the harbour close to a turkish Navy Ship destined to leave for Crete the same afternoon. While the Generals and their Staff have chosen to dig into Stalingrad and repel the Polish forces slowly surrounding the city, the exact whereabouts of the Soviet leadership still remains unknown. They have most likely chosen exile to remain in position for rebuilding their homeland once the tides of war turn. As the German industry ceases pumping millions of Reichsmark into bolstering the Polish Army, this day might come sooner than hoped for...
***
Press from the Republic of Spain:
The Socialist Republic of Spain announces the end of the civil war! Celebrations throughout the country remained peacefully, only dampened by the sad news coming from the cradle of socialism in the east. While the rest of europe is torn into pieces, Spain maneged to reunite the people not only in the streets. The world Public is truly surprised to be confronted with the first official note from Spain coming from the newly appointed minister of lesser peaceful affairs, Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco y Bahamonde Salgado Pardo:
"People of the world! Spain is united again and it's glorious people are one in their heart, their mind, and the true moral values they follow. It is my pleasure to announce, that - following the new common ideal of all Spain - we wish to guarantee every citizen of the Iberian peninsula, the Spanish islands and all lands where the Spanish soul still burns in the heart of the people Justice and Equality while preserving the values of the past, that allowed Spain to be a great nation. Thus we call on you, people of Great Spain, to unite as one force, repel every one inducing hardship and foreign ideas on you and lead Spain to a future as glorious as the past!"
With the Spanish fleet approaching the waters of Gibraltar and the former Spanish Republican Army now bolstered by the ranks of the former nationalists, the peace in Spain might be of limited duration.

As the calendar rolls over to MCMXL, Europe remains a bloody mess that the eternal spirits of warmongers like Augustus Caesar and Genghis Khan must welcome with profound enthusiasm. Beyond just this carnage, humanity rolls along:
In Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso is proclaimed the tulku of the thirteenth Dalai Lama.
On February 27 Martin Kamen and Sam Ruben discover carbon-14.
As the last vestiges of Stalin's Scandinavian adventure are expunged, a time bomb destroys the offices of Norrskenflammer, a Swedish communist newspaper, on March 3.
This is due by Thursday at our usual time; Fall 1940 provisionals are due on Friday!

I came in as a replacement and got approached by both alliances. I gave the super allies
first shot to keep continuity and because the undead and archers lobbied hard. Got bit hard by the undead but the archer assured me of support and the other allies helped in the underground. In the center I provided value in the underground, middle seas and against the fairy and wizard.
It was fun to play my small roll at the heart of haven. Cheers! Jay
hope to get in a full game soon. The start of this must have been wild.

DC311: French EOG - DrSwordopolis (Aug 24, 2010, 3:35 pm) |
Somehow I had the fortune this year of playing in the WB's 2 longest games in its history. This one I didn't have so much influence over as the other one, but I figured I'd get in on the fun, and give my perspective to the game's early events, even if it's been quite a while now since I was still in the game, and things are a bit fuzzy. (FWIW Ray, I'd read your EOG.)
This was a very strange game to be in. I don't think I've ever played a game where one player had such unwitting influence on the game's history by the nature of just his silly opening. Dirk opening in Barbarossa set, as far as I can tell, the whole strategy of the first half of the game in motion and began my untimely end. Although I'd say that the game was already decided by about 1910 and the next half was just playing it out.*
Before the game even started, I was alerted by half the board that there was an England-Germany-Italy motion to take me out right at the beginning of the game - an idea which I think was the figment of Russia's imagination. For me, that really set the flavour of things to come, which Dirk would soon cement. I had planned from the beginning to play along with Dan's seemingly half-hearted desire for a cross-Channel alliance and to convince the foolish German player to work with me against England and then wait for him to set himself up for the stab, although I see from Dirk's EOG that he had already decided to work with England against me before the game started - a decision that makes much of his stubborn insistence that England was "too strong" to fight (while most of Dan's units were in the west) make more sense. My plan changed a bit when Dirk and I got to talking and we had a very fruitful communication going - fruitful in terms of word count, anyways, if not results. Also a very memorable exchange after I told him how ridiculous I thought his opening was - still can't believe he almost got a solo after starting like that.
Anyways, Dirk opened the Barbarossa, and then Ray\Austria started screaming at us about a Western Triple which didn't exist, and seemingly an ART alliance was formed to counter this, with poor Italy stuck in the middle to be destroyed. So, the ART formed to fight the fictional EFG, and then I let myself get outmaneuvered and stabbed by Dan. After that it was all downhill as I was able to tactically outdo Dan for a little while while Dirk bleated about being too busy in the east\scared of Dan's might. Then Ray seemingly realized I wasn't lying about the reality of the Western Triple, stabbed his allies and looked set for a solo run. I figured at that point, I think in 1904, that my only shot for a turnaround was to convince Dan that Ray was close to a solo, and to get his units into the Med and potentially away from my centers. Dan correctly parsed that Ray wasn't quite close enough yet to be a true solo threat, and stabbed me again. At this point, Dirk finally chimed in and offered to help me out, an offer for which I was so very grateful. He offered me the chance for a "guaranteed" one center survival, which I blew the raspberry over as I rather skeptical of his ability to enforce the deal with Dan.
My stab of Hamish for Tunis gave me one more year of pretending to have a shot at a survival, or as Ray was peddling at the time, a piece of a 5-way draw. But that didn't last long, and Nearly Headless Nick became Headless Nick.
Around that point I remember looking at the board and remarking that Dirk had the best shot out of the 3 powers for a solo, but having gotten to know Dirk's playstyle pretty well, I doubted strongly that he would have the gusto to truly go for it, and figuring I'd be waiting for the 3-way draw. A few years later, Dirk proved this to me by working with Dan for too long, and then the long cycle truly got going. I figured that once Dirk got too strong, Dan and Ray would punish him, and once Ray got too strong, Dan and Dirk would punish him, etc... cycling around the board until they all got fed up with the cycling and settled for the 3-way. And then eventually they did. Dan's EOG seems to confirm that that line of thinking existed to me.
All in all, it was a pretty interesting game to be in (and I haven't even mentioned the insanity of some of Paul's diplomacy), even if it didn't go nearly as well as I'd hoped. Kudos to Dirk, Dan and Ray for the result, and for outranking me in the tournament. Kudos to Hamish for sticking it out. And major kudos to Christine and Mike for GMing it all the way through to 1921.

Wonderful write-up Harvey! I really enjoyed reading it.
I guess I'll follow up with my EOG, especially since there isn't much to say.
EOG -- Austria
The call came through the fog, with Trumpets blaring: "The Light Brigade is called to action". I grabbed my sword, hopped on my trusty steed, and rode off to join in the fray.
Immediately, I was set upon by nearly all of the existing opponents. Poland and Turkey, France and Spain, and a "Hi Hello" from England. It was clear that 2 alliances had formed, and I was caught dead-center between them. Instead of immediately picking sides, I waited to let one side prove untrustworthy and make
my decision for me. Nigs grabbed that banner and ran with it. So Jorge and I began discussions.
I have to admit that as a Light Brigade replacement, this game was not the top of my priorities. And with Charles' very restrictive rules, I became more and more uncomfortable playing the game. But a LB Knight does not shirk his responsibilities and I vowed to play out the position. However, internally, I decided to let Jorge play "puppet master" -- a position I rarely take.
The game progressed with me battling France for the interior, and me losing ground slowly but surely. I figured it was only a matter of time before I was exiled from the board, and I offered my centers to Jorge and Adrian -- both declined and vowed to fight to keep me around. This was a bit of a turning point -- a refocusing of attentions. The board shifted, Spain began losing ground, and France lost some influence in the center.
Then Adrian went silent.
It became clear (well, Jorge pointed it out) that Spain was tossing the game to Turkey, leaving centers unprotected and allowing Adrian to scoop them up. Jorge refocused his units to grab some of Turkey's centers to balance Turkey's gains and prevent the Solo. I switched my attack to the Alps area, hitting France and Spain depending on who was nearby.
To Adrian's credit, he never really came after me for easy centers. He hit me once, but mostly blocked my ability to drive through to the Balkans.
Jorge kept his promise and kept my units alive as a buffer between Turkey and France. And Nigs stopped attacking me, in order to focus on stopping Spain from giving everything away, or at least remove Spain and form our own stalemate line against Adrian.
Somewhere in this mix was a fiasco of grand extremes, dealing with missed deadlines and abandonments. My record with DipCorp and Light Brigade is forever tarnished with an Abandonment (my first EVER in over 20 years of Dip). Ah well, enough has been said on the subject, so that's all I'll say now.
Thanks to all of you for a fun game! I have faced each of you in other games (this was a first for Harvey, but we met again in the Haven) and always enjoy our games together. Such a high caliber group of players!
Mike

About 10 days from now I head off for a holiday and won't be back home until the end of September. I don't know if any else plans to do End of Game Statements, but I have one that I actually wrote almost three months ago. It assumed that I would be eliminated, and at that time I had no real sense of who the winner (or winners) might be.
Below is what I wrote. I have not altered it since then.
Best Wishes to All,
Harvey
END OF GAME STATEMENT - ENGLAND
Harvey - "It feels really great to
have won this game!"
Observer - "Hey, wait a minute. You
didn't win this game. In fact you were eliminated before the game
ended."
H - "Yes, I was eliminated but I
still won.
O - "What the heck are you saying?
--------- won the game.
H - "Oh, I see. They got their
scores improved. But, what does that have to do with winning?"
O - "It's pretty straightforward.
Haven't you even read the Diplomacy rules?"
H - "I understand your confusion.
You assume that all people play the game to beat the other players,
and that determines who wins and who loses. And you're right -
according to view, I didn't win. But that's not the metric I use."
O - "The metric you use? Oh come on!
Is this going to be a 'sour grapes' story?"
H - "I'll let you judge the 'grapes'
part of it. From my perspective, however, the scores on a web site
aren't very important to me. Far more important are the interactions
that I have with the other players. That's what determines whether
or not I've won a particular game. And, in this game I was a real
winner."
O - "By interactions do you mean you
look at your success in stabbing, misleading and outsmarting the
others?"
H - "Nope, not even close. Don't get
me wrong; I'm no saint, and I've done my share of devious stuff.
And, like everyone else I have no objection to eliminating others and
coming out ahead. But that's not winning for me. Instead I measure
my success or failure by the pleasure I gained from getting to know
my fellow players. And in this game I did pretty well. I got to
have a bunch of "off-line" email conversations with Dirk, along
with a couple of extended 'non-game" phone calls in an effort to
help him make some business connections. I got to have two meals
with Jorge in southern California, while there. I even got to
exchange thoughts about U.S. Immigrations issues and the new Arizona
law with Charles. Who would have thought that a German guy would
have such a keen understanding of U.S. politics and social policies?
On top of that, I got a bunch of supportive emails from all the
players when I went through my medical challenges. All that was far
more important to me than counting how many centers I had at any
given moment in the game."
O - "Fair enough, but what about the
game itself? Surely you gave it some thought as it progressed?"
H - "Jeez, do you really expect me to
remember that stuff? Well, I'll give it a try. Being England, and
starting with just two centers ..."
O - "How did you end up playing
England?"
H - "Oh, when the game started, I
told Charles that I didn't really care which power I got. When I got
England I realized that I needed to do some fancy footwork if I was
going to avoid being eliminated right away. (See, I do care about
the 'game proper' at some level.) My thought was to do what I could
to get Denmark and Sweden to attack each other, in order to give me
some breathing space. Even though I failed (they seemed determined
to be allies) I was able to pick up Ire and Sco. In large part that
was because I trusted France when he offered to make ENG a DMZ. In
many ways that set the stage for the rest of the game. I proclaimed
to the world that England was neutral, while all the while doing what
I could to aide the covert(?) FSE alliance. As things progressed,
France and Spain were very active in trying to coordinate their
forces in the battle for central and southern Europe. I did my best
to stay out of trouble, and continue the charade of my neutrality."
O - "Do you really think you were
able to fool people on that one?"
H - "For a while I think it worked.
Eventually it must have become clear to Jorge that my 'northern
advancement' was aimed at flanking PTA. In any case I'm sure that he
became increasingly frustrated with me as the game advanced. He kept
urging me to attack France, warning that if I did not France would
eventually attack me. Although I wasn't certain that I would
eventually face a French stab, it did seem likely. However, I chose
to not stab France. I thought that to do so would only benefit
Poland, and that I would be caught in a vise, attacked by both France
and Poland. I wasn't sure whether Nigs would honor our alliance, but
I felt that however slight the possibility, it was a better outcome
than the otherwise certainty of being sandwiched between Poland and
France."
O - "And once the stab did come, did
you have regrets about not stabbing first?"
H - "Not for a moment. My only
regret was that I was going to have to eventually deal with Jorge's
'told you so' comments. By the way, to his real credit he said not a
word about it at our dinner in Los Angeles. As a side note, the
highlight of the meal came almost at the end when a brief discussion
of Diplomacy did come up. Catie, Jorge's most impressive girlfriend,
suddenly realized the Diplomacy connection and said, 'Oh, you're that
Harvey!'. I'm still not sure whether I should have been ashamed or
proud to have been identified."
O - "You can't really tell me that
you have no negative feelings about Nigs' stab?"
H - "I really don't. First, I was
expecting it and was surprised that it didn't come a bit sooner.
More importantly, however, was the offer that Nigs had made before I
went into the hospital for my cardiac procedure. There was a vote
for a DIAS on the table, and both Nigs and Dirk offered to vote for
it in order to end the game and 'spare me' from having to think about
the situation while dealing with medical issues. I thanked them, but
asked them to not vote for the DIAS, and I voted against it."
O - "So, no regrets at all?"
H - "A few. First, that I didn't
really establish relationships with the other players. More
importantly, there were several points in the last three or four
months when I found myself (very uncharacteristically) depressed due
to my medical situation. The impact was that I lost virtually all
interest in the game, and lacked the energy to even force myself to
be an active participant in the game. That was unfair to the rest of
the players. I'm most grateful, however, for the support that got
from everyone, Charles included."
O - "And now?"
H - "If truth be told, I'm going to
'hang up my rock and roll shoes' for a while and take a hiatus from
playing Diplomacy. I don't know if it will be weeks or months. It's
happened before - after a year or two playing multiple games
simultaneously I get burned out. But sooner or later the itch comes
back. I'm sure it will again. In the meantime, many thanks to all -
for the challenge, for the support, for the encouragement and for the
friendship!"[Reply] |

together orders. Thanks for your attention to this.
I am not much for game comments but DANG, what a crazy turn.

Hi guys,
as I've not been home of late owing to family
matters, I owe you an official statement that the FPT tree-way draw proposal has
met universal approval. The game thus has ended and there will be no Fall
adjucation.
I'd like to congratulate all players for seeing it
out until the very end.

In the meantime, many thanks to all -
for the challenge, for the support, for the encouragement and for the
friendship!" |
1648 (dc279) txurce Aug 25, 04:44 pm |
Polish-Lithuanian EOG:
I chose Poland because I like the challenge of a central power, and liked its potential flexibility. Perhaps the biggest flaw with 1648 is that it strongly steers Austria west, thereby dividing the map in half as in standard Dip. Given that Poland has threats to the north, east and to some degree the south, it makes sense for them to establish neutrality at least. I did this with the first Emperor, then set about creating an alliance that would thin out the east. The Czar barely involved himself in the first winter negotiations, and so found himself the victim of a P/T/W blitz, and was basically out in two years. This victory quickly gave me a near-corner position.
In the meantime, the course of the game was already being set by Spain. The most powerful country at the start immediately allied with France - the strategist I feared most - then tried to draft Denmark vs England for a potentially unstoppable western wall. This led me to forge a strong, mutually supportive alliance with Turkey, since a strong Ottoman entity was essential to controlling Franco-Spanish growth.
As the game progressed in the early years, Sweden stabbed Denmark, allowing England to quickly become a viable, seemingly neutral corner force. My goal was to control the NE quadrant before pushing west. As soon as Russia was gone I attacked Sweden with some Turkish help, and immediately started pushing him back.
In the meantime it became evident that the Austrian Emperor was playing gunboat style. Due to personal issues he engaged in no negotiations from his central position, and played that pretty poorly. As a result France was making impressive gains in the center of the map. Sweden's argument that I was better off attacking Austria instead of him, the better to stop F/S, haunted me a little. Austria was so uncommunicative that even offering him blanket support drew no response.
At this point the game's opening fluidity turned to quickly hardening cement in the course of two years: 1652 and 1653. In my opinion, there were four major factors, one following another in quick succession.
The first turning point came about due to Spain's conservative play. Despite having an early edge on Turkey and only one place to go given his alliance - east across the Med - he failed to seize the initiative and take uncontested control of what was then his front yard, the Ionian Sea. The Sultan, on the other hand, impressed me by meeting the challenge head-on, taking the Ionian in 1651 and the Adriatic in 1653 in a series of tactical victories. From then on Spain was on the defensive with nowhere to go militarily. In fact, had there been more room around the Ionian to maneuver, Turkey would have eventually broken through.
The second turning point was the abdication of the Austrian emperor as 1652 began, once it was pointed out to him that it wouldn't cause any systemic problems. The new emperor found himself land-locked and locked-in with five armies. After a couple of years trying to establish his own way, he realized that his only hope to survive was as the central wall of an alliance with P/T. It was a position that offered little else, but the emperor played it for what it was worth. All of a sudden the French momentum slowed as well, and a hard line began to form from Brandenburg down to the Ionian.
The only fluidity in the game existed in the north, where I was making headway on Sweden and - much more importantly - England had seemingly yet to commit to any side while gobbling Denmark. I engaged in extensive diplomacy with Cromwell, trying to recruit him to the eastern cause. My basic argument was that he was in excellent position to have his uncontested fleets sweep down on France, whereas he couldn't hope to break through against me. That he was as secure as anyone in his corner seemed to go without saying. Our talks continued as he surprised me by attacking Sweden after Denmark, thereby encroaching on an areas I had assumed would soon be mine. It didn't affect my desire to ally. until he then attacked me in Russia in 1653.
England told me he had chosen the west because his goal was to survive in a large draw, and he feared a Polish solo. To have made such a conservative decision so early in the game was disappointing. I immediately countered by offering the dying Sweden survival as a minor power, ceding his doomed eastern position in exchange for the hope of expanding in a joint thrust west through Scandinavia against England. I was confident this diplomatic sally would work, but then the Swedish king suffered a serious injury, and had to abdicate. I made his heir the same offer, but he didn't see the same inevitable fate that I did if he chose the west. Choose the west he did, and these two factors - Sweden and England allying with F/S vs APT - finished the erection of the wall dividing Europe.
The conflict then entered its second phase, in which what little action there was consisted of England steadily shifting all his weight east in an effort to take Novgorod, while Sweden was predictably reduced year by year. The English strategy didn't make sense to me, as his eastern thrust couldn't pay off in any meaningful way, while every season left him increasingly vulnerable to a French stab from a player known for rarely settling for a draw. Even after England took Novgorod thanks to a debatable ruling, there was still no break in the P/T Russian line.
As soon as the new Swedish ruler chose the west, my diplomacy with France kicked into high gear. As I had fully expected, the French king told me that there was no way he would settle for a DIAS. Our plan was to have him strike E/S, after which I would roll up Scandinavia and Turkey would sweep west in the Med, pushing back Spain. France waited longer than I would have to stab his allies. I found myself both impatient and increasingly impressed by the benefits of France's patience. With every passing season, England improbably became more exposed. By the time France launched a well-timed strike in the fall of 1656, he had an outside shot at a solo.
France came close to succeeding, but he didn't quite make it. The game then entered its third and final phase. Sweden died. England fell back quickly across Scandinavia. And Spain made a deal with Turkey where he would be left alone enough to inflict damage on France. The result of all this was that by 1660, France's explosive growth had now led to some shrinkage, Turkey had Spain at his mercy, and I was on the verge of moving into the Atlantic. I had long been committed to not stabbing Turkey by the time I had my inevitable window at a solo, because we had bailed each other out of enough jams to make this unpalatable to me. After the decisive French initiative to break the stalemate, I was equally committed to an FPT draw.
The situation then came to a head when the Spanish king declared that he would accept neither a PT nor FPT draw, and proceeded to start giving away enough of his centers to hand Turkey a solo. No one with the upper hand ever likes these sorts of attempts by a doomed player to assert himself on an entire game, but they are usually depressingly effective. Turkey told me he couldn't refuse such a huge gift horse. I gave him my blessing, partly because he had been an excellent ally. and partly because I had already made contingency plans.
Rather than let Spain dictate an undesirable end to the game, I had maneuvered into a position where, from a distant 14, French cooperation would allow me to top Turkey's potential 19 with 20 in one turn. However, our ultimate goal wasn't a Polish solo, but a three-way draw. This required a last-minute diplomatic effort with Turkey, where France and I laid out how he should strive to reach 19 rather than 18, and how I would hold at 19, after which we would be tied and in position to dictate the outcome, however long it took.
Sustaining that would have been tricky, of course, but all the more fun for that. The basic plan was to keep Turkey and Poland even while France steadily reduced Spain, until he either capitulated or was eliminated. We coordinated everything, and the fall 1661 season came off with some surprises, but all the key parts falling into place. One season later, the game ended with the three consistently successful powers on top.
This is my second game of 1648. As I mentioned earlier, I think that the map steers Austria too hard to the west, and the Ionian bottleneck needs to be broken up. In addition, Russia and Poland have a hard time not fighting early in the game. In all this, 1648 is not as fluid as A&E. But overall Charles has created an excellent variant that sustains repeated visits - the highest compliment one can give a designer.

with a couple of extended 'non-game" phone calls in an effort to
help him make some business connections.

Diplomats,
I'm sorry about the delay in adjudicating this. When I got home last night I didn't have any access to the net. Something's obviously fixed itself overnight - everything's fine again.
First order of business - a rule change:After talking with Baron Powell, the variant designer, I've decided to go with the victory conditions as specified in the variant description. This means 18 centers to win. This also means that two of you can accomplish this in the same season. The 1900 wiki page states that this might result in a tiebreak, and that the game should go on until we have a winner. If there are any comments about this change in the rules, please take them up with me immediately. I'm pretty sure that the end-game victory condition hasn't affected the game all too much already, which is why I'm changing it.
Second order of business - a rules clarification:There have been a question about the variant that's been asked - specifically the Russian situation. We are playing with the latest variant version, as described on the 1900 wiki page. That version has a rule called the Russian Emergency Measures (REM). This allows Russia to have an extra unit on the board when one of his home centers is occupied by foreign forces, but not when all of them are occupied.
There was a previous version of the variant that had a different rule, called Steamroller. We are not playing with that rule. Any references to it you may find on the net are obsolete for this game.
Third order of business - the orders:Things are starting to heat up. The Russian unit in Rumania is crushed by a combined Austrian/Turkish force. The British unit in southern Spain is also pushed out of Spain by the French units. The British Fleet, however, has a few retreat options - one of which is an empty supply center.
We have a single retreat due:English F Spain(wc) can retreat to: Portugal, Gibraltar, or OTB (Off the Board).
I'll also need to take in the builds. They can be conditional depending on where the English Fleet retreats to.
Austria: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2Britain: Supp 5 Unit 4 Build 1 (or 2 if the retreat is OTB or into Portugal)France: Supp 6 Unit 4 Build 2Germany: Supp 7 Unit 4 Build 3
Italy: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2Russia: Supp 5 Unit 3 Build 2Turkey: Supp 4 Unit 3 Build 1

FLWC: Undead EOG statement - offdisc (Aug 24, 2010, 9:44 am) |
Hi All,
Great game! The super-alliance was amazing to watch: perfect execution and well-balanced attacks, no mis-communication, and always the eye on the victory.
Up North, we tried our best to keep the same focus, but without the success.
My game faced an uphill battle from the first Fall. 3 alliances seemed to be forming: North, South, and Middle. The Nomad turned me off to joining the middle, and I knew I might be in trouble. In the other Haven games, Faeries relied on Rogue support to survive; when the Rogues showed no alliance interest, my cards were dealt. I tried for a secondary alliance with the Archers to at least secure that border, and had no choice but to put all my eggs in that basket. He jumped at the opportunity to gain ground against me! Great move on his part --- my path was now strictly aimed at stopping his advance.
In the Northern alliance, we seemed very strong, but I believe we got in our own way. Just not enough room to expand, and the Underworld proved unenterable (that definitely needs to be a word in the OED!). I passed on my experience from the other Haven games: "the Underworld is the Key!", but while not falling on deaf ears, it was never made the highest priority. And, truth be told, the defense of the entrances was extremely strong.
The Northern Alliance pulled together as hard as we could, and we made a decent showing, but once the Ogres ran through the Underworld, the game was finished.
Great game all! Thanks to Mike for running another successful Haven campaign. (although I doubt he liked the outcome -- this is a LOT of players left on the board)
Mike

FLWC: Trolls EOG - derekthefeared2 (Aug 24, 2010, 8:02 am) |
From my prospective it was a complicated the game.
Although not in the center of the board the trolls position was is tightly packed with other players. In year one there were 6 different players that all had the potential to take one my home centers.
I decided early on that the magicians and I wouldn't be able to peacefully co-exist. So I quickly befriended them and backstabbed them. I worked hard so that all his potentially allies would be more friendly with me than him.
My first strong alliance was with the undead and the rogues, although I guess I was being played by them as the only one of the 3 not in the super alliance. Early on I made friends with all of my neighbors but those alliances had to fall apart as my neighbors started to fight. I ended up siding with the centuars because they seemed to have more allies than my other neighbors. Also with my focus in the south I was very exposed to his potential attacks. I ended up having to attack the gnomes after the magicians.. I didn't really have anywhere else to go. Robin and I had an interesting back and forth for quite a while.
I maintained my relationship with the undead and eventually worked them into the northern alliance. The northern alliance was a great group of players and I felt like we worked really well together.. In the end we just couldn't make the kindof advances we were hoping on. The map seemed to have too many near stalemate lines and progress was quite slow. I was also isolated in my own world for the most part waiting for a calverly to arrive that never did. I tried very hard to get the pirates and to a lesser extent the samari to abandon their alliances but with no luck.
I think as our successes became smaller and smaller our alliance sort of ran out of steam. Dirk convinced us that he had analyized the board throughly and our position was flawed and that we would eventually fold. So rather than dragging it out for another year we opted for peace.
An interesting and complex game, I wish I could have played the FOW version I always enjoy those, definitely sign me up for your next FOW variant Mike. I'd have mixed feelings about playing the map again. It was interesting but a lot of work dealing with so many players.
Good game, and congrats to the winners, especially the archers, you earned it.

This game was a blast from start to finish, and every single player I spoke with come across as intelligent, friendly, and just plain fun.
Much ado has already been made about the super alliance, and my play was dictated almost completely in regards to that alliance. I really enjoyed all my initial neighbors, and in fact I had at least three seperate alliances almost right out of the gates. The super alliance is the obvious one. The wizards, Elves and I had a pretty solid three-way, and the hobbits and I committed to a mutual alliance as well. This left the leprechauns as the odd ones out, so the whole gang pretty well dog-piled them.
At first I was skeptical of the so called super alliance, but as all the players seemed to be taking it to heart, I resolved to make it my primary alliance, and began cutting off my other alliances one by one. I betrayed the hobbits first. It's a shame, because I really liked working with the
hobbits, but it just had to happen from a strategic point of view. While I was taking on the hobbits with the wizards, my super alliance friends were turning on the elves. The fate of the elves seemed sealed, so the wizards and I joined in on the attack, followed quickly by me shoving a dagger in that wizardly back.
To the hobbits - I really did enjoy working with you. Sorry about the stab, my friend.
To the elves - You were a great ally! If it hadn't been for the pesky super-alliance, I think an Ogre/elf/Samurai trio would have been a real force to contend with. You were a victim of the "big picture" in that the ogres and I were sort of bound to fight you. I can't say I'd do it any differently, but I hated doing it all the same.
To the wizards - Sorry for setting you up. Likewise, you were a victim of the meta-game. I had to work with the pirates against you in keeping with the super-alliance. but again, I
hated doing it.
To the Undead - I respect you a great deal and really enjoyed our talks. You were always kind of the "black sheep" of the super alliance, and that made it fun because the rest of us got at times a bit to care-bearish perhaps, and you helped add a dose of reality. I don't envy your position. You were between the rock and the hard place and you tried making the best of it. When it came time to stab you, the ogres, or the pirates, you were my choice simply because I was able to justify stabbing you to the rest of the alliance. I'd happily team up with you again, but I know I'd always be looking behind me to see if a knife had sprouted there yet!
To the Ogres - Great alliance. We moved in lock-step from the beginning. In my conversations with the undead I told him I knew you were the biggest long-term threat to me, but I couldn't bring myself to stab you. My gut said to trust you, and it seems to have paid
off. Well played my friend.
To the archers - Well done. I echo what's been said about your obvious raw skill to have kept you alive till the end, let alone allowed you to thrive as you have. The ogres and I had it easy because of the lopsided superalliance. You had the uphill battle. You earned this win more than I did.
To the remainder of the super-alliance - Thanks for giving us the win. I really didn't expect it, but I appreciate it. Thanks guys. It's been fun.
To the northern alliance - You were getting me worried at the end. I'm not sure the game's end was at all clear had the draw not happened. You played well. I'd happily cross swords with you again.
And to our GM - Great job. Again, the work required for a game like this is staggering (at least it *wasn't* fog of war this time, huh?) but you kept the game going at a good clip. Well done![Reply] |

Dear Charles,
Hope everything is ok. This delay in the adjudication is a bit strange, namely taking into account all your earlier enthusiam in GMing and testing this excellent variant you've created. Even if you don't have a lot of time, could you drop a few lines just informing us when you foresee to be able to adjudicate the S1942 retreats?
Many thanks,
