The Build Not Ordered

Two units to choose in a game so good
And sorry I could not opt for both
And be one builder long I stood
And thought first fleet no - army I should
Put on the board for my new growth

Then thought the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps a better use
Deadline approaching I sit and stare
My GM patiently wondering where
the unit is I will produce

I shall be telling this with a sigh
of this exciting game we braved
Two units to pick from - but chose I -
I couldn't decide - so the turn flew by
And I had all my builds waived

Chosokabe: Supp  9 Unit  9
Asakura:   Supp  6 Unit  6

Enjoy!

Date Masamune was one of many daimyo that ruled a portion of the vast Mutsu province.  They are most well known for their longevity, and indeed they achieved their greatest accomplishments merely by surviving the Sengoku Jidai era, and assuming control of the wealthy Sendai domain after the Tokugawa had consolidated control of Japan.  The Date were provincial lords for nearly 700 years, one of the longest tenures of any clan in Japan's feudal era.

***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY:  Uesugi withdraws from his invasion of Asakura's domain, but does not find the support he needs to evict the Oda from their holdings in Mino.  The Chosokabe and Mori armada continues to advance along both coasts of Honshu.  Satomi Yoshihiro sends his neighbour Date Masamune his congratulations on being this months featured daimyo.  Masamune is inconsolable anyway, as he was forcibly made into an Uesugi vassal long ago in this game.

Hey Guys,
How is everyone feeling? Are we ready to get back at it? Blue, I hope the back is back in action!
I think we have a player absence coming up August for a bit, but as far as I'm aware that should be the last summer slow down.
So, if everyone could just check in (and send me adjustments) that would be great!
Best,

Given that I am traveling there is the possibility that I missed some emails - specifically, confirmation of receipt of my submitted retreats and a posting of the updated map showing retreats.  Given that the next set of preliminary moves were due earlier today, I can only wonder what happened and what fate will befall me if I fail to submit moves on time.

Can someone (Charles or otherwise) bring me up to speed please?  Or, should I just chuck it in and call it quits before I get bounced out of the game for missing a deadline?

Hallo zusammen,   those Dutch rebels have once again bested a Latin powerhouse! Anything in their water that gives 'em an uncanny gift in dealing romance-speaking nations humiliating defeats...? Meanwhile, tragic news has reached us from the fabled Gold Coast. Apparently not all is yet lost for Latin powers!

Closer to home, there's also a good deal to report! The long-time entente between the Porte and Warsaw appears to have fully broken down judging by the troop movements in Eastern Europe. In Italy Habsburg power appears to be on the wane as the Bourbons regained Savoy, while the Turks have fought there way into the lagoon city and its hinterlands. As for the British Isles, the royalist cause has recovered from recent setbacks and now all key objectives on the British mainland are in the hands of young Charles's adherents.

As for peace talks going on in Münster and Osnabrück, a recent proposal to grant the Sultan outright hegemony over the continent has failed. The same proposal (i.e. conceding the game to Turkey) has been once again put forward and again awaits your votes.

I've scheduled the Summer 1661 Retreats for Monday, 5 July 6 PM CET and adjusted the coming schedule as I hope suits everyone best. If not, let me know and I'll adjust.

Now, lets see those valiant young German Landsknechts teach those temperamental Gauchos a lesson! No "Hands of God" please. We've had enough of that from those South Americans yesterday!

Guys,  Thanks for pulling together once again for this invitational. I'm glad we were able to fill the vacant spots in our roster with such top-notch players. While any elimination is bittersweet, this one comes just in time for me. I'm trying to reduce my game-load for the foreseeable future, and bowing out of this one reduces me to 3 GM'ed and 1 player position. Very soon I'll reduce my GM responsibilities by another 1
or 2. I plan to remain minimally active (1 GM'ed and 1 played) throughout the DC/ACD/PTKS communities, so I'll likely see you all again soon. Thanks for the great string of games, and especially to work once again with the Old Man.    As far as an EoG, I can't really say I see anything wrong with the way I played
this one. I thought I'd try to play Dan and Ray off each other and see what my best option would be. That obviously didn't work very well. Dan is a skilled liar *cough* diplomat, and he caught me in his web twice. Props to you, Dan. Ray is a stalwart ally, once he's actually on your side. Of course, it's best to let someone become a mutual enemy to guarantee that outcome, which isn't always beneficial. Good luck to you all through the rest of this game - I plan to follow it to its conclusion and I look forward to seeing who comes out on top.  Blue, good luck with your back. I wish you a speedy recovery and many healthy (and SC-filled) seasons to come. If you need anything, you have but to shout (or email). I haven't forgotten your help hauling all my shit out of that moving truck.

Hey Guys,
We say goodbye to Andy this season - well technically we'll say goodbye this Winter, but the die is cast. Thanks for sticking it out! I've heard from most of the belligerents now and all are ok waiting for Blue to heal up. We even have a couple of offers to submit orders on his behalf!

Blue, I'm going to adjudicate the retreat (Germany has one) then put the game on hold until you're feeling better. I'll touch base with you in two weeks. Feel better! The rest of you can think about your adjustments (if you have one).

Guys,
Charles actually put in for his once-a-game extension in the 1936 game and has mentioned to me his personal life is disrupting Diplomacy at the moment. I do not have any news to share about our game, however.

I notice that Winter Retreats/Adjustments were due yesterday.  Not having received results of the Fall moves, I have failed to submit retreats/adjustments.

I will simply take this to mean that either I have been eliminated, or I have been dropped from the game for not submitting timely orders.

It was fun playing with you all.

Enjoy the rest.

Guys,
Charles actually put in for his once-a-game extension in the 1936 game and has mentioned to me his personal life is disrupting Diplomacy at the moment. I do not have any news to share about our game, however.

Charles   ----------

I've scheduled the Summer 1661 Retreats
for Monday, 5 July 6 PM CET and adjusted the coming schedule as I hope suits
everyone best. If not, let me know and I'll adjust.

Now, lets see those valiant young German Landsknechts teach those
temperamental Gauchos a lesson! No "Hands of God" please. We've had enough of
that from those South Americans yesterday!

Far as I can tell, Charles went NMR in his own game.

Does that mean he's automatically out and we need to search for a replacement GM?

Given that I am traveling there is the possibility that I missed some emails - specifically, confirmation of receipt of my submitted retreats and a posting of the updated map showing retreats.  Given that the next set of preliminary moves were due earlier today, I can only wonder what happened and what fate will befall me if I fail to submit moves on time.

Can someone (Charles or otherwise) bring me up to speed please?  Or, should I just chuck it in and call it quits before I get bounced out of the game for missing a deadline?

Hallo zusammen,

those Dutch rebels have once again bested a Latin powerhouse! Anything in
their water that gives 'em an uncanny gift in dealing romance-speaking nations
humiliating defeats...? Meanwhile, tragic news has reached us from the fabled
Gold Coast. Apparently not all is yet lost for Latin powers!

Closer to home, there's also a good deal to report! The long-time entente
between the Porte and Warsaw appears to have fully broken down judging by the
troop movements in Eastern Europe. In Italy Habsburg power appears to be on the
wane as the Bourbons regained Savoy, while the Turks have fought there way into
the lagoon city and its hinterlands. As for the British Isles, the royalist
cause has recovered from recent setbacks and now all key objectives on the
British mainland are in the hands of young Charles's adherents.

As for peace talks going on in Münster and Osnabrück, a recent proposal to
grant the Sultan outright hegemony over the continent has failed. The same
proposal (i.e. conceding the game to Turkey) has been once again put forward and
again awaits your votes.

I've scheduled the Summer 1661 Retreats
for Monday, 5 July 6 PM CET and adjusted the coming schedule as I hope suits

Andy,

Is it really lying if you believe in your heart that you would do what you promised if the situation was completely different?  Hmmm... I guess it probably is.

Good playing. You had a tough go from the start with all three adjacent countries on you from the starting gun.

The rest of you can think about your adjustments (if you have one).

| dc330: Fa37 Results! - dknemeyer   (Jul 06, 2010, 9:39 pm) |
Despite war raging across and beyond the entirety of Europe, this passive observer cannot help to feel that the most brutal and desperate fighting of all is occurring in the Spanish Civil War. On August 6 Falangist artillery bombarded Madrid, while on September 5th they seized the city of Llanes. Despite these initial shows of military might it all proved a ruse; the Nationalists decided to set off for France leaving their Republican adversaries to claim Madrid unopposed. Perhaps they wanted to participate in the autumn wine auctions?
Meanwhile, on November 5 35,000 Republican supporters were massacred near Leon, ostensibly as retribution for their taking Madrid.
Looking to the Far East, Japan is leveraging its modernization and mechanization program to extend beyond their diminutive size and terrorize it's neighbours - and enemies from afar. Consider:
- On August 26, during their invasion of Shanghai, they attack the car carrying the British ambassador and risk awakening the Lion
- During the audacious Battle of Pingxingguan on September 25, despite being defeated by the Communist Chinese National Revolutionary Army, the Japanese continued pressing forward and, by October 3, were advancing on Nanking. It was defeated on December 13. There, it is rumoured that a brutal series of civilian crimes were committed with an estimated 200,000 to 350,000 casualties. In correspondence back to his relatives, German businessman John Rabe tells stories of creating a "safe zone" from human biological testing by Japanese scientists, taking advantage of German-Japanese alliances to procure this unusual status. In this way he is able to provide safe harbour for Chinese women and children who he says are being raped by Japanese soldiers. Needless to say this incident exposes the ugliest sides of warfare
- On November 9 Shanghai falls to Japan
How is little Japan able to inflict such setbacks on impenetrable China? Might they be unstoppable?
I'm sorry to share we had our second mis-order: a player who submitted orders post-prelims had an invalid DP order, using a Dip Standard designation for a territory that is different in 1936. The territories are materially different in location and surrounding borders than Standard so this was a very cut-and-dried decision to ignore it as invalid. I will email this player privately to let them know the error. Please use this as a reminder to get in prelims and be careful about your territory designations!
There are two retreats (all neutral units are disbanded) and plenty of builds this year, as you will see below. Upcoming deadlines are at the end of this note.

British Press:
British Petroleum Announces "We'll Go Anywhere to Clean up this Oil!"Reuters (London) - British Petroleum has enlisted the British Royal Navy to aid in the oil giant's efforts to clean up the oil spill that has been dominating the headlines. "We are sooo sorry about spilling that oil.  BP is committed to cleaning up after itself, so we're going to clean up oil everywhere, even outside of the Gulf of Mexico and go into other 'gulfs' to make sure the world's ocean is rid of all oil spills." said Marty McSlick, BP's spokesperson. After sitting through it's "time-out", BP has decided to come out with renewed rigor to take charge of the clean-up efforts.  Exhausting all remaining boats for skimming the oil, BP contracted the British Royal Navy and asked them to start cleaning up oil wherever it can be found. "We've been told by reliable local sources that the Germans have been gushing out oil left and right in Denmark.  Ever since they set up camp here, it's been nothing but Deutsche Oil this Deutsche Oil that.  We'll get that cleaned up in a jiffy.  Not Jiffy Lube of course," said Rear Admiral Mr. Clean, referring to Jiffy Lube, the American Car Oil changing company. "I've been given this stupid broom, mop, and sponge and told to go to every nook and cranny to clean up this German oil." noted a weary British sailor.  Pointing at the scraggly coastline in Denmark as well as Skaggerak.  "I don't know *when* I'll be able to get back home..." In other news, the British government noted happily that the oil clean up gives all of the dejected English football fans something to do after England's abysmal showing in the World Cup.  "I hope the Germans stop to celebrate long enough to stop spilling this damn oil.  An oil can isn't something you should be holding while you're celebrating a Klose goal.  You'll end up spilling the oil everywhere!" exclaimed Hans Hansen, a Danish dock worker, watching with envy as the Danish team failed to make it out of group play.***
French Press:
Casablanca (Associated Press) - FOREIGN LEGION JOINS REGULAR FRENCH FORCES!

They said that the troops of the French Foreign Legion formerly stationed in Beirut would never see another French army in their lifetime, but they were wrong! After being evicted from the Lebanon by expansionist neo-Ottoman forces and traversing south through disputed Palestine, the Foreign Legion troops arrived in the Suez Canal Zone and caused a minor diplomatic incident which appears to have been smoothed over. British government representatives have stated that, while the Canal is jointly owned by both France and the United Kingdom, the arrival of the French army was entirely "unpermitted, unexpected and untolerated." French figures have said that it was all a big misunderstanding, and ruffled feathers now appear to be smoothed over as a joint Anglo-French fleet has spirited the army around the African cape and into (formerly) neutral Morocco, where they are joining Franco-Algerian troops in a continuing French bid to dominate western North Africa. The troops are expected to engage Italian forces in the continuing guerrilla war being engaged in Africa to determine the new borders of France's and Italy's African possessions. With France's vacation of the Orient, the Near East now appears to be under the sole dominion of the ungodly Muslim forces of the Second Ottoman Empire and their imperial challengers, the equally ungodly Communist forces of the Soviet Union.

GM Notes: I wonder if DP variants would benefit from knowing how *many* total DPs are spent on each neutral, but not what the orders are or by whom. Simply seeing the volume of spend tells an interesting story that might serve as useful intel for players trying to grope what is going on. Just an idle thought.[Reply] |

Hey Guys,
We say goodbye to Andy this season - well technically we'll say goodbye this Winter, but the die is cast.

Very soon I'll reduce my GM responsibilities by another 1 or 2.

Andy,

Is it really lying if you believe in your heart that you would do what you promised if the situation was completely different?  Hmmm... I guess it probably is.

Good playing. You had a tough go from the start with all three adjacent countries on you from the starting gun.
