dc224 S21 - undead EOG - LadyDay   (Jul 03, 2010, 8:54 am)
Well, finally for the EOG of the smallest (and least alive) of the surviving powers.
I joined this game as a replacement for an unpromising position, at Trout's desperate request. There
was little time for negotiation, and the little that took place was inconclusive, so I kept my
predecessor's neutral prelims. My initial contacts were with my neighbors (Rogues, Trolls, Dwarves)
and the players I knew or thought I knew, like the Fairies. Sims explained that he had been working
with the Undead, but felt that the Undead owed him everything, and could never do enough to pay him
back. The fairies, on the other hand, were very positive and had interesting suggestions; if the
Rogue and Fairy positions were reversed, I would most probably have continued with that alliance.
However, Sims rapidly settled the issue with a brilliant one-center stab, so I joined the Dwarves.
Only to find that the Dwarves themselves were stabbed by their closest ally. Aii!
Luckily, I had started up conversation with the Ogres, who had joined the game one turn before me.
Hoffman had taken over a position in trouble, but with a lot of potential -- which he knew, since he
had played the first game and perhaps followed this one. He proved a very active, resourceful
diplomat, as well as an agreeable player to work with. When the Dwarves and Wizards split up, he
allied with the weaker of the two and took on the more formidable Wizards (as well as bringing the
Elves back into the fold), the proof of a confident, far-seeing diplomat. I joined with him, and
never regretted that decision.
My position was precarious as long as the Rogues and Trolls worked together, much better when the
Trolls stabbed the Rogues. I found Warren a pleasure to deal with once we started working together.
In fact, my only regret in this game was that, in response to Hoffman's urging, I stopped attacking
the Rogues and switched to join Sims against the Trolls. The idea was that Hoffman would join the
party rapidly, but it didn't work out that way. I really wish I had stayed on long enough to make
Sims entirely marginal. It would have given me a much solider position -- and probably have worked
out at least as well for the Ogres, too. And it would have been much more fun!
Well, that's the way of it, and I am glad that I ended up part of the draw. I had always voted for
the DIAS (surprise!); I still wonder who continued voting against it.
Garry Bledsoe a ?crit :
Well well. After much public, er...dialogue, we have peace at last.

A 6-way draw it is - Undead, Trolls, Rogues, Faeries, Ogres and Pirates.
Congrats to all and thanks for hanging in there. I must say I am sad to
see this one fizzle into a draw from a pure enthusiast perspective (I
thought for sure it had 3 or 4-way written all over it) but glad to be
done with it from a GM perspective (life is HECTIC right now).

I will get the site updated tonight and all of the center counts etc.
loaded so we can get this one final on the site!

Congrats again! I would love to see EGS's and would gladly post them to
the site! I will eventually get to one from the Elves.

Garry

Subject: dc224 W20 - A Long Long Winter Delay
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 2010 20:34:27 -0400

All apologies. Unfortunately real-life is taking its toll and I am
letting it affect my GMing and for that there is no excuse. I apologize.

I never published Winter. Here it is. I have Spring orders from many so
if everyone can confirm that their orders are FINAL I will move us
through Spring as soon as I receive that. If perchance I don't have
yours please mark them FINAL upon submission. In absence of the ability
to run them before that point, let's run these this Sunday the 27th at
6pm CST at the latest.

Oh...and as a reminder, there IS a DIAS on the table for your voting
pleasure.

Thanks for your patience.

Ogres Build A Krikkit and A Spirit Pond
Rogues Build A Telmar
Faeries Remove F East Mirianic Ocean

Subject: dc224 Aut20 - Troll Retreat; Winter and Spring Deadline Change
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2010 09:06:25 -0400

All,
Sorry. I forgot about the Troll retreat. The F retreats to Far Far Away.
Adjustments required for Winter are as stated below. Due to the slip by
me, let's move our Winter to tomorrow (the 15th) and Spring to the 17th
(just adding a few days for some more finger-pointing).

Subject: dc224 F20 - Twenty Strong and Counting
Date: Wed, 9 Jun 2010 14:42:08 -0400

*DIAS Proposal Fails*
*But Fret Not, There is a New DIAS Proposal for Spring 21*
*And, Since Slaughter is Officially Going to Be 21, I Guess It Can Drink
Leprechaun Ale!*
*Undead and Faeries Lose a Center to the Ogres (Although in the Ogres
Defense, One*
* WAS Previously an Ogre Center)*
*Some Confusion on the High Seas? (literally!)*

Well there is little of note that actually occurred. The majority of the
orders looked eerily familiar...

However, we do have the semi-annual excitement of the DIAS vote that
fails again and the like 13th one is proposed anew. And we
have confusion? on the High Seas as a Rogue ship gently bounces the
Trolls out and thus they require a *retreat*.

The High Seas can retreat to any number of places so just let me know
where they should go.

*Pending the receipt of the retreat of the High Seas, let's set
adjustments due by Friday June 11th at 6pm*. Ironically I will be going
to see Shrek that night...

Adjustments will be (assuming a Troll retreat in lieu of OTB):
Faeries remove 1
Rogues build 1
Ogres build 2

We will then move to *Spring with a deadline of the 15th of June at 6pm
CST.*
**
GM NOTE: I had a late request to move the deadline. I decided not to
because I did not get a requested date for the extension to end and I
could not hold up any more. I did NOT look at orders prior to making
that decision because I did not want my decision influenced.

1648 091010: Spring 1661 Moves - charlesf   (Jul 03, 2010, 2:12 am)
Hallo zusammen,

those Dutch rebels have once again bested a Latin powerhouse! Anything in
their water that gives 'em an uncanny gift in dealing romance-speaking nations
humiliating defeats...? Meanwhile, tragic news has reached us from the fabled
Gold Coast. Apparently not all is yet lost for Latin powers!

Closer to home, there's also a good deal to report! The long-time entente
between the Porte and Warsaw appears to have fully broken down judging by the
troop movements in Eastern Europe. In Italy Habsburg power appears to be on the
wane as the Bourbons regained Savoy, while the Turks have fought there way into
the lagoon city and its hinterlands. As for the British Isles, the royalist
cause has recovered from recent setbacks and now all key objectives on the
British mainland are in the hands of young Charles's adherents.

As for peace talks going on in Münster and Osnabrück, a recent proposal to
grant the Sultan outright hegemony over the continent has failed. The same
proposal (i.e. conceding the game to Turkey) has been once again put forward and
again awaits your votes.

I've scheduled the Summer 1661 Retreats
for Monday, 5 July 6 PM CET and adjusted the coming schedule as I hope suits
everyone best. If not, let me know and I'll adjust.

Now, lets see those valiant young German Landsknechts teach those
temperamental Gauchos a lesson! No "Hands of God" please. We've had enough of
that from those South Americans yesterday!

Charles

Given that I am traveling there is the possibility that I missed some emails - specifically, confirmation of receipt of my submitted retreats and a posting of the updated map showing retreats.  Given that the next set of preliminary moves were due earlier today, I can only wonder what happened and what fate will befall me if I fail to submit moves on time.

Can someone (Charles or otherwise) bring me up to speed please?  Or, should I just chuck it in and call it quits before I get bounced out of the game for missing a deadline?

Harvey

Charles actually put in for his once-a-game extension in the 1936 game and has mentioned to me his personal life is disrupting Diplomacy at the moment. I do not have any news to share about our game, however.

Guys,
Charles actually put in for his once-a-game extension in the 1936 game and has mentioned to me his personal life is disrupting Diplomacy at the moment. I do not have any news to share about our game, however.

Hallo zusammen,   those Dutch rebels have once again bested a Latin powerhouse! Anything in their water that gives 'em an uncanny gift in dealing romance-speaking nations humiliating defeats...? Meanwhile, tragic news has reached us from the fabled Gold Coast. Apparently not all is yet lost for Latin powers!   Closer to home, there's also a good deal to report! The long-time entente between the Porte and Warsaw appears to have fully broken down judging by the troop movements in Eastern Europe. In Italy Habsburg power appears to be on the wane as the Bourbons regained Savoy, while the Turks have fought there way into the lagoon city and its hinterlands. As for the British Isles, the royalist cause has recovered from recent setbacks and now all key objectives on the British mainland are in the hands of young Charles's adherents.   As for peace talks going on in Münster and Osnabrück, a recent proposal to grant the Sultan outright hegemony over the continent has failed. The same proposal (i.e. conceding the game to Turkey) has been once again put forward and again awaits your votes.   I've scheduled the Summer 1661 Retreats for Monday, 5 July 6 PM CET and adjusted the coming schedule as I hope suits everyone best. If not, let me know and I'll adjust.   Now, lets see those valiant young German Landsknechts teach those temperamental Gauchos a lesson! No "Hands of God" please. We've had enough of that from those South Americans yesterday!   Charles   ----------

Guys,
Charles actually put in for his once-a-game extension in the 1936 game and has mentioned to me his personal life is disrupting Diplomacy at the moment. I do not have any news to share about our game, however.

Harvey

The new British Prime
Minister regrets to inform the German-Polish joint command that he must
regretfully decline their offer of alliance. While the situation in the north
could have remained stable, a struggle between Italy and the Royal Navy in the
Mediterranean would have resulted in an open door for the Sultan, something that
the incoming Prime Minister was not prepared to risk at this time. The British
government understands and regrets that this move means open war. However,
Downing St and Whitehall remain focused on an eventual stable European situation
and peace is something that we will work hard to obtain, even while our guns
blaze.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Autumn 1909 Results - Corrino   (Jul 02, 2010, 8:02 am)
Good Morning, Players.

Then there were four....

It is with heavy heart -- okay, that's a lie, I love this! -- that I must announce the elimination of another stalwart stabber.  Please bid farewell to our wandering Tsar who was ejected from his final hidey-hole this Fall.  He has already supplied me with a nice EOG statement that I am reserving for game end.  I'm not sure how it would do any damage to publish it now, but I just don't trust you guys.  Wink

Being just a little bit of a math guy, I find it interesting that to this point we have had one country eliminated every third year exactly.  Does prior performance promise future results?  C'mon, you know better than that.

Can France and/or Italy slow down the Anglo-Turkish
party?  Can either England or Turkey get all the way over the line for the solo, or can two heavyweights swinging in the dark somehow construct a stalemate line?  I have a feeling that we'll have the answers to these questions pretty soon.

Complete SC Counts:

COUNTRY    SC
Austria     0    ... eliminated 1903

England    14

France      3

Germany     0    ... eliminated 1906

Italy       2

Russia      0    ... eliminated 1909

Turkey     15

==================================================

NEXT DEADLINE:

Winter 1909/Spring 1910 are due on Thursday,
July 8 at the usual time of 8 pm Eastern US time.  As I mentioned already, my plans are a bit uncertain over the next few days so I may need to adjust the timing.

Cheers,
Chris

Error alert!

In my holiday haze, I somehow thought that the Norwegian Sea and the Labrador Sea were the same thing.  That is probably due to older versions of the map where the Norwegian Sea did go all the way across.  As a result, there was a bounce recorded that shouldn't have happened.  F Atlantic - Labrador and F Oslo - Norwegian are actually both successful.  The changes are below with a new map.  Of course, this means I need one fewer retreat from Quebec.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1909 Results - Corrino   (Jul 01, 2010, 8:01 pm)
Hey Stabbers,

Didn't I predict we'd have more action this turn?  Okay, that doesn't exactly make me Nostradamus, but it does mean more information for you little data-grubbers, and more work for me and my crayons.

What about what actually happened?  Well, the story there is that the story remains the same.  The witches are witchier still.  Turkey just found the long, lost Russian army hiding in Munich, while England finds success in ignoring the old Iberian hunting grounds and focusing on the French homeland instead.

RETREATS DUE:  French armies in Brest and Marseilles.  The Russian army in Munich.  If you gentlemen could possibly manage to submit those retreats within the next 12 hours, I will be able to get the adjudication out
before I leave on my trip.  In that case, you may have to wait until Saturday for the Autumn reports.

LOOKING AHEAD:  Spring 1910 will NOT be due Tuesday.  My return home is still up in the air, but it won't be that soon.  Probably I'll just make the deadline a week from today.  Please let me know if that's a problem for you.

SC Counts and Adjustments due will be published with the Autumn reports.

Cheers,
Chris

dc330: Fa37 Prelims due in just under 23 hours! - dknemeyer   (Jul 01, 2010, 5:08 pm)
Hi Everyone,
A friendly reminder to get your prelims in before 5 PM ET Friday.
Already from someone's prelims I caught an error that would have been
potentially disastrous for the player. It is just good sense to get a
second set of eyes on your base orders, even if you know you will
likely change them! So take advantage of the prelims and get 'em in...
I am still traveling and struggling with my schedule at the moment. It
will not impact this game but may explain my being less communicative
than usual.
Take care,
Dirk

Hey All,

Blue hurt himself and is drugged up. As a result he's asked for a delay.
He asked for 48 hours, but that would put the deadline on a Saturday,
which I'd like to avoid. Let's go with Monday July 5th at 9 pm.

Blue, recover quickly!

Best,

Mike

DC308 - EOG - Italy - neversawthatcoming   (Jul 01, 2010, 10:48 am)
First, many to thanks to Fredrik...did a very nice job of GMing...kept the game moving...was fun and easy to work with.

Second, I would like to thank my much larger ally - Jeremy (Austria) for a couple of things...for allowing me to play a screw-ball opening which threatened him for most of '01 and '02...and for graciously offering to include me in the draw and bypassing what may have been an Austrian solo.

Third, I'd like to thank all of the players that formed this game and who hung in there until the handwriting was on the wall.

My goals coming into the game were to ally with either R or T and snap up easy Austrian centers.  Talks with R and T never seemed to go very far, whereas talks with Austria always seemed to produce a tangible plan with mutual benefit.  For me the turning points in the game came in Spring of '01 when I tried to convince Austria to let me have Tyrolia...and then again in Fall '01 when I had to convince both Germany and Austria that I did not plan to attack them.  The offer of a DMZ from France was a godsend and allowed for all of this to happen without fear of defending against the west.

My opening -- The Bohemian Crusher as I have heard it called -- produced a much more interesting game than playing Italy sometimes affords.  What I hope this showed is that the Bohemian Crusher can be anti-Austrian, but can be turned into something that is quite difficult for Russia to handle as well.

Take care all,

Joe

Hello, all.  Sorry about the delay.  I was missing a couple of orders at the deadline, and then got caught up in work when they all came in.  As today is Canada Day, I now have oodles of time to get this out.  This was a very interesting round with some bold moves.  I like those.  Most bold of all was Oceania's move for Honolulu.  I'll let you see that for yourselves (and I warn you, the adjudication for it has a high chance of being erroneous).

As a result of some of those bold moves, we have a number of retreats to resolve, and given that this is a long weekend for most of us, those will be due on Monday.  See you then!

Gentlemen,
And there is peace across Europe as the diplomatic channels manage to persuade all fighting parties that the weapons should be put down.
The victory goes to Austria and Italy who managed to stay together from the start until the end in this game with lots of abandonments. England and Germany manage to scrape together a survival.

End game statements can be sent to dc308(at)diplomaticcorp.com.
I also envourage you to visit the game page at the web site, where the complete stats will soon be published.
