DC319: Game Status - charlesf (Jun 24, 2010, 12:51 pm) |
Hi guys,
as Michael failed to submit orders on time and he
had previously used up his alloted grace period allowance, I'm now seeing a
replacement for Britain according to my house rules. Should any observer wish to
champion Britain's cause, please let me know.
Should I not be able to recruit a replacement
within a reasonable time-span, I'll apply the civil disorder rules to Britain.
But that's very much Plan B.

Hi guys,
please apologise the longer absence of your GM. I'm
still in Greece as we extended our stay here both in order to avoid the strike
waves here in Greece impeding our travel home and also since we wanted to extend
our stay here anyway. Given changed plans, being on a yacht or in countryside
unfortunately meant "no internet" and hence only now I'm able to catch up on
Diplo-matters, being back in the capital. In hindsight, I ought to have not
attempted to schedule a deadline during my holiday. Live and learn. In any case,
I'm flying back home tomorrow morning.
As my inbox filled up, I may have missed a set of
orders. I'll shortly confirm all orders I've received. Should you not receive a
confirmation of your latest orders shortly, please resend. On account of this
issue, I'm rescheduling the coming winter deadline for Monday, 6PM.
Greetings from Athens,
Charles

well - it might be a clever decoy by the mastermind sitting in Moscow, or

Don't forget that tomorrow at 5 PM ET is the deadline for getting in
your builds. I am still missing two sets.
As a reminder, I expect to be offline possibly until really late (I am
playing in a FTF Diplomacy tournament at Origins, ironically enough).

are in I will adjudicate. Otherwise, unless I am quickly eliminated,
it will be after midnight.

DC 304: Camel Spotting - Persian EGS - Kenshi777 (Jun 23, 2010, 9:21 pm) |
Hi to all from surprisingly sunny Ontario -
Thanks to Mike for a very well-run game, and to all the players for their dedication to the game. Always good to play a game without excessive delays, NMRs, or abandonments - you all have my gratitude, and I would welcome the opportunity to play with any and all of you again.
So - as for the game - it started off rocky for me. I think Ancient Med is generally a very well balanced variant, with one major exception - Egypt is a particularly tough nut for Persia to crack. I had it in mind to try and launch an attack on Egypt immediately, if I could secure a Carthaginian commitment to the cause. Charlie politely declined, and Tim didn't seem much inclined to provoke him either. So plan A went out the window by the end of the first spring.
Fortunately - Robin and I hit it off well, and though both Tim and Charlie seemed rather resistant to my efforts to stir up a C/E war, Greece was more than willing to ally with me. I found that I enjoyed Robin's unorthodox and aggressive style immensely, and was content to hang back for a while as long as he was willing to focus his efforts heavily east. I still did not want to engage Egypt alone without Carthaginian aid, so I peaceably gobbled neutrals for a while and jockeyed around for a good stab position either north or south, whichever first became available.
That ultimately came at Robin's expense. Rome and Carthage mended fences, and seized the initiative in the great clash of east and west typical of many Ancient Med games. This helped me greatly, as I finally got my much desired Egypt/Carthage war, and Robin committed against Rome, leaving a few choice vulnerabilities at home. So I moved on Robin.
But so did Alan - with great effectiveness. I horribly underestimated how quickly his own forces would settle into Greece, and how much of the Greek territory I would have to concede to him in this new R/P alliance. Robin was soon on the ropes, and I ultimately (some would say foolishly) eliminated him with an unintended betrayal - I missed what was probably the single most important message I received the whole game from Robin, where he accepted my proposal to shelter him in Cyprus in exchange for use of his remaining fleets in the western drive. Had we worked that out, P/G/E would have advanced much more rapidly than P/E did alone - and we might even have seen a resurgent Greece gaining SCs again. I took no pleasure in Robin's elimination, and I owe him a sincere apology for the unintended stab.
Then came the hardest decision of the game - I had decent options to attack either Rome or Egypt, and I spent days running one scenario after another through RP trying to figure out which one would play out best. Long story short, I chose to side with Egypt because:
1 - R/C was scary as hell and had a fresh new agreement inked (so it seemed to me)
2 - Invading the Egyptian homeland was every bit as difficult then as at the beginning.
and 3 - E/C seemed completely committed to fighting each other, whereas Alan could have gone either way.
There were a few scary situations after that where I nearly threw the solo away (allowing Alan to disband a fleet and rebuild it as an Army in Rome comes to mind) - but fortunately #3 above held true the rest of the game, and that gave me the edge I needed for the win. I'd be interested to hear what E/C negotiations were like in this game - though I know Tim's time availability for this game restricted his negotiations greatly.
All in all - this was an excellent game, and a very strong challenge from all involved - I hope to see you all around again in DC, and I'm sure you will do very well here. Pleased to finally have my first DC solo and the shiny medal that goes with it, plus enough credits to bump me up to Knight Errant. All that, and the US qualifies first in Group C and advances to the next round of the World Cup. Have to say it was a good Wednesday
I'm off to bed, heading out kayaking in some white water in the morning - thanks again -
B. of Persia

Congrats to Ben, as the EGP is voted down but he wraps up 18 centers... Everyone showed some resolve in the end to stop a win, but it was too late - nothing could reverse the Persian momentum. End-Game-Statements would be enjoyed by all, share your thoughts on the game. Hope it was fun! For me, it was relatively painless to GM. Only 5 sets of orders to enter, and everyone on time made for a pleasant GM'ing experience.

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1904 Results - Corrino (Jun 23, 2010, 7:44 pm) |
Go, Go, Gumball!
I have to applaud you all on another very entertaining turn. Is it as much fun to play as it is to watch? I hope so.
This season's highlights include:
. Turkish magic. "I wave my hands like so, and 'Poof!' The Russian fleet has disappeared!"
. Russia, meanwhile, is studiously unimpressed. "Shut up and give me back Rumania," says he.
. The French army in Brest challenges their mates in Piedmont to surmount the Alps. "No thanks!" reply the sensible soldiers. "It's back to Marseilles for some R & R."
. The English admirals rotate their fleets counter-intra-sideways-sort-of, while the marines chase reindeer into Finland.
. German units adopt a similar fire-drill approach, but at least in their case they
stumble into Copenhagen. "Give us a kiss, Fraulein Mermaid."
. Italy lands a fleet in the Near Eastern port of Smyrna, while back home the canals of Venice host their "friends" from Austria. "Just protecting you from the Frusskies, buddy," offers the not-terribly-abashed Archduke.
I can't wait to see how this will resolve in the Fall. Play on!

Hallo zusammen,
I'm afraid the adjucation had to wait until our celebrations died down
following Germany's victory. Congrats to the US team. They've really played
themselves into my heart (as South Korea have done as well), though my guess is
that US fans are in awful risk of heart attacks given how close Donovan & Co
tend to cut it. Happy also that at least one African team made it to the next
round. No cakewalk for the US, for sure. But hey, nor for us Germans either, if
England's starting to find their form.
The season has been quite eventful. Since
it's late, I'll leave it at that.
A two-way Polish-Turkish draw proposal has been advanced and is now up for
a vote.
The Winter 1660 Retreats are due
Friday, 25 June 6 PM CET.

Dc 315: Is It FATE? - MMGreenwich (Jun 23, 2010, 5:35 pm) |
I enjoyed this game and found that it played differently to what I am used to. Online I have played to the two turns a year system and found the extra deadlines easy to miss, so I played it as if there were two and did a lot of forward ordering. I also found some of the expectations of the players to be different to my expectations, but that is part of the game. The first alliance survived a long time and it was a pity it ended. The second alliance then came together and held on.
Thanks to all. I will play on this site after another start elsewhere. And perhaps the summer!

Camel Spotting - Solo Win! - FuzzyLogic (Jun 23, 2010, 9:40 am) |
Woohoo!
See you next game,
-mike

DC330 Fall 1936 Maps - charlesf (Jun 23, 2010, 5:13 am) |
Hi guys,
thought I might help out with that order map Dirk
has had difficulties with. You'll find it attached further below. And while at
it, I also added the results map since I much prefer my own custom-made unit
icons over RP's standard (and for a game set in the 1930s rather anachronistic)
icons.
Kudos to Dirk for his flavourful commentary! I have
to however take exception at the Berlin Summer Olympics not being a success!
Okay, making basketball an Olympic sport may have been misguided, but a whopping
49 nations participated, whereas at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics a
mere 37 countries took part.
Care to know how many medals your country won?
Here's a rundown:
Germany
89
Italy
22
France
19
Britain
14
Poland 6
Turkey
2
The USSR only participated at their first Olympics
in 1952 (too busy with purges?). The USA won 56 medals, Jesse Owens being the
darling of the Berlin crowds.
Next Olympics scheduled for Tokyo in 1940! Lets
hope we all then forget our various disputes and peacefully celebrate for a
couple of weeks!
Cheers,
Charles

Gentlemen,
Thank you all for your patience. I know that I've been late with the last two adjudications. That hasn't helped France, who suffers the second NMR this year, and is therefore placed in Civil Disorder.
The German army in Silesia is saved by the bell by a misorder of the Warsaw unit. Other than that we see the Austro-Italian alliance move forward in the Western Mediterranean.
