Guys, I've had a deadline extension request. Due to the travel of two players and myself, I'm pushing Fall 828 back to Thursday, 1 July at 6pm EDT. Just as a reminder, three of you have yet to submit orders.

Dc 315: Russian end of game - AlanRFarrington (Jun 20, 2010, 10:17 pm) |

An interesting one, as ever the players made it so.
I started with an agreement with Germany to hold off England whilst we had the fleets to do it, and then built in STP- surely a good deal for Germany with the EF alliance very obvious. But, to my disbelief our Kaiser was unwilling to follow through with joint moves in the north, instead choosing wishy washy posturing (presumably to ally with F or E). Disaster for Russia! and the consequent rolling up of our scandinavian expedition- I was glad to have England be so generous, and to me Germany got what he deserved!
Meanwhile in the south we had a AR and an AI- poor Turkey had no chance- or so you would think. Problem was Italy started ordering us (AR) what to do, and which sc we could have- pah! get back in your Roman palace- Italy sensing his lack of control then stabbed Austria, relieving Turkey of the crushing pressure he was on.
From there it was frankly a mess. We (AIRT) all new FE was going to win at that point unless we worked together, but this was just not possible because there was no trust on either side. GAME OVER!
But the fun continued until i NMR'd on a crucial move- one of those things, work pressure, thought Id sent orders in etc
Well done to all players- especially Turkey, what a revival. Plus our paternal GM.
Cheers guys, good fun
Max

Dc 315: Is It FATE? - AlanRFarrington (Jun 20, 2010, 10:16 pm) |
Well I said I was going to do this tomorrow night before Spring turn, but I have all the votes in and accounted for now. No reason to make you guys suffer anther 24 hours.
4 Simple votes bring peace to the continent of Europe after 12 long years of war. 16 center Derek Eiler decide to concede after the solo appeared to be out of his reach. Jon, Maria, and Dale (Austria, France, & Turkey respectively) fought together to preserve their spots in the draw.
End Game statements are encouraged from all current and past players. I hope you enjoyed your second Winter Blitz game, and I"m sorry I could not force myself to be a more involved and committed GM.
I hope to sit across the board from each of you again, whether it be as a GM or as a fellow player.
Cheers,
Alan Farrington

Dc 315: Is It FATE? (Winter Blitz) MMGreenwich Jun 23, 05:35 pm |
I enjoyed this game and found that it played differently to what I am used to. Online I have played to the two turns a year system and found the extra deadlines easy to miss, so I played it as if there were two and did a lot of forward ordering. I also found some of the expectations of the players to be different to my expectations, but that is part of the game. The first alliance survived a long time and it was a pity it ended. The second alliance then came together and held on.
Thanks to all. I will play on this site after another start elsewhere. And perhaps the summer!

DC329 COL rules issue - vegas_iwish (Jun 20, 2010, 4:46 am) |
Meant to deal with the HK issue up front but has become fairly standard to do without that optional rule. I once owned the board game along with having run postal, ftf & pbem Colonial games. As a balancing tool the optional rule (once always used) was that HK is not an sc for China if captured. "Just another little province/isle for C while important trading post for B" was put forward. Realpolitik & most games don't cotton to that. While I used to go with the rule the change in the way players play Colonial has made it less necessary. That's my thinking.
Colonial was a rushed game in developement like many Avalon hill games ( I suffered through early 3rd Reich; Tobruk; other AH true wargames). Balance, rules, map all had issues. If go to letter of rule, no one can use Suez unless a unit is in Egypt. Ridiculous. As long as owner has a line in orders(ie Britain can use Suez)allowing use by another player we're good to go. No problem acknowledging canal could easily be blocked to outsiders without an army or navy via scuttling or the like. Old Moulmein Pagoda set some online standards & us Gms have are own.[Reply] |

Okay, I'm going to start out with an apology to Adam. He ordered a convoy, but didn't order the corresponding move. Unfortunately, I can't auto order a move like this, so sorry to be an asshole, Adam, but I can't do anything. In the southeast, the Russian fleet in Turkey is expelled by the Turks, while at the same time, only slightly farther north, it appears that all is forgiven as Turks help Russians take Serbia. Retreats for Russian F Con and British F Eng is due Monday the 21st. Fall will be due Friday the 25th, and then we take a ten day break.

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Spring 1908 Results.... - Corrino (Jun 18, 2010, 9:04 pm) |
Hi Stabbers!
An interesting round for what was revealed (a mystery convoy) and what was not (damn near everything else).
In the first case, we faced a situation that is not covered by the rules and which I cannot remember seeing in either of the Stab! games I played in. The Turkish fleet in Ionian was attacked but not dislodged while in the act of convoying. Since the rules are silent on this manner it was left to me to make a decision. My thoughts:
The convoy was successful. According to the rules, successful moves are not reported... EXCEPT where they cause another player's moves to fail. England's attempt to move to Ionian Sea failed. One argument in favor of reporting.
If the fleet had held, I would report
that. If the fleet had supported another move, I would report that. It seems consistent to report that the fleet was in the act of convoying when attacked.A successful support is reported, unless the move supported was successful and the support was unnecessary. An insufficient support (i.e. move failed) is always reported, while an unsuccessful (*cut*) support is not reported. The success or failure of the convoy depends on (a) whether the convoy held its position and (b) whether the convoyed army reached its destination.
The army being convoyed, however, did not come in contact with any units. It's move was successful and did NOT impact any other moves. Therefore, the army's movement remains hidden.
Ergo: In my opinion, the fourth bullet point trumps the third. In order to preserve the hidden army move, the fleet's order shall be reported as: F Ionian Sea Convoys
*
Any or all of you are welcome to comment on the wisdom of my decision. You can't change it for this turn, but you can influence the addendum I intend to add to the DipWiki at the end of our game.
All of which distracts us a little bit from the fact that in all of Europe, there were only two spaces contested over in Spring of 1908. One was the aforementioned Ionian Sea, and the other is Spain. I think this makes 37 consecutive turns that E and F have butted heads over the Catalan Coast. Will they ever learn?
When one gets right down to it, there is a little bit of a tricky situation in the Spain bounce, too. France only needed one unit to bounce with England's F MAO, so why did I report both? Again, the rules are fuzzy on that one, but this way just feels right to me. A self-bounce that impacts no one else is a secret. If you're going to send two units to a single space to bounce each
other and a foreign unit moves there, too, I think that unit would notice that you sent two and not one. I believe I already set a precedent for this decision earlier in the game. Once again, feel free to chip in with your opinion.
A final note on sneaky tactics to take advantage of the rules: It might occur to you clever types that instead of ordering
a unit to hold you could issue bogus support orders or bogus convoy
orders in the hopes of misleading your fellow players. While I confess
that if I was playing this is EXACTLY the sort of ploy I would come up
with, my instinct as a GM is not to allow it. But I'm waffling on that
one. Let's say I'm not going to allow it in this game, but I'm happy to add this as another good point of discussion. Think about it.
RETREATS REQUIRED: None. We can head happily into our week-end with no pending business.
NEXT DEADLINE: Fall 1908 is due Tuesday, June 22, at 8 pm Eastern US time. Send me finals early and I'll get back to you on Monday.
Cheers,
Chris

DC317; Fall 1912 Retreats - Nigs (Jun 18, 2010, 4:24 pm) |
Retreats:
Russian A Venice can retreat to Tuscany, Rome, Apulia, or OTB.
Colonel, the italian gondoliers are insisting that they move back in.
Well, I never much cared for garrisoning cavalry regiment in a city full of water anyway. Do we have orders for where to go next?
Only a fragment... we ate the pigeon before we saw the message. It says move to St. Peters...
Home... leave at last.
Or maybe it was complete after all.
Let's visit St Peters, and water our horses in the Trevi fountain and stable them in the Cisteen Chapel. We can return to Russia in the spring.
A Venice to Rome please, Darryl.
18 & out.
Darryl, thanks for GMing
Gary - thanks for working with me so long vs Austria and Turkey.
Douglas - thanks for the great help with the solo.
Scott - thanks for hanging with it.
I'll write a full EGS later

OK, so I guess I labeled this e-mail as spring 1906 deadline, but it's actually for the fall 1906. I'm sorry about that, thank you those of you who questioned that. I don't know what is going on with me, I am making so many mistakes, and I hope they aren't messing you guys up too much, you have all done a great job of fixing my errors and everything, thanks!
I'll reattach the map and realpolitik files to this e-mail. Deadline is still 9:00pm EST tonight though, you've had almost 2 weeks so there aren't any excuses.
