dc325 Imterra - W02 Turkey MIA? - garry.bledsoe   (Jun 01, 2010, 9:38 pm)
All,We have our builds in. A good smattering of F's and A's. My House Rules are put into use early in the game to help determine our Turkish removal. Turkey did not submit a removal.
Logan,Please get in touch and re-engage!
Our adjustments are:Austria builds A ViennaEngland builds F LondonFrance builds F BrestGermany builds A BerlinRussia builds A Warsaw
For Turkey the GM removes the F in Eastern Med because it is the unit not in an SC.
Our deadline for Spring03 is June 8th at 6pm CST.

Oops! My mistake. I did receive

F Tyr - Boh

As you can imagine, my inbox is overflowing. I still don't have a lot of time tonight (just got back). But I'll send out the updated map and dp file tomorrow. For now, I suppose F Tyr-Boh and A Bur OTB.

Thanks all.

I'm back and ready to tackle Gming this monster once again! Smile

Thanks Garry for filling in! You are a lifesaver! It's now somewhere around 8:30 PM CST and I have yet to receive any retreats or any adjucation from Garry (not blaming Garry, it's not his responsibility!). But unless retreats got sent to him and not me, I suppose both units retreat OTB. I'll wait to make theis official and give Garry a chance to confirm first.

Either way, I'm back at the helm and ready to steer this ship home!

dc224 S20 - Roaring Twenties - garry.bledsoe   (Jun 01, 2010, 7:40 pm)
DIAS Fails (as does the DIAS for the Elves)

The Undead Fall Back

Some Repositioning?

Ogres Take Back Great Glacier Lake

All,

Yet again an interesting turn. I am very intrigued to see what comes of Slaughter at Storytime.

Our DIAS fails again and, yes, another IS proposed for Fall voting. As a side note, it is appreciated that some of you voted for the Elven Front for Unholy Inclusion in a DIAS (E-FUN for short). However, I fear that the statute of limitations on Elven resurrection has passed and they will stay truly dead. It is also noted that the "secret spell" that the Wizards cast before being killed off failed when the GM rolled a 6 so they will not be magically apparating in any future DIAS proposals either!

We had no retreats needed this turn so we move to Fall without delay. Our deadline for Fall 20 is June 8th at 6pm CST. Please remember to vote yes or no for the new DIAS.

Garry

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - Fall 1905 Results - Corrino   (Jun 01, 2010, 7:19 pm)
Greetings All,

Nice to see everyone is over the recent bout of  shyness.  While last turn it seemed we had a roomful of wallflowers, with only 12 units appearing on the dance floor, this season shows 22 units getting down under the strobe lights and the shiny diplo ball.  I'm not going to actually look up this next fact, but by blatant assertion I'm going to claim that this is the first time that at least 50% of the units for every single nation have been revealed.

Prominent among our stories:  The Witches Meet!  Turkey wins the Battle of Moscow, ejecting the English army formerly ensconced therein.

And this is only the first bad news for England.  The Russians (remember them?) have apparently decided they prefer beer to vodka.  They
don't care if the witches are fighting over Moscow.  They're happily setting up shop in Munich and Berlin, the latter newly achieved by dislodging... an English fleet.  That's two strikes against King George's boys.

How about the Atlantic war?  Surely the proud sons of MOE (merry old England) are winning against their old enemies the French?  Well, we can't speak for the whole war, but the Battle for Brest (Round 4) sees that port returning to French hands once more.

Blimey, mate!  That's three losses on three fronts!  Surely a season of infamy for the mighty British empire.  Could this be the beginning of the end of the middle part of the end's beginning for England?  Wise "Stabbers" will temper their excitement until tomorrow night when the SC counts for all nations are reported.

RETREATS NEEDED:  3 from England

DEADLINE:  ASAP, within 24 hours at the latest.  Winter
1905/Spring 1906 will be due on Friday, June 4.

As always, please check these posted results and your country reports for errors.  It has been awhile since I had a perfect season.  No major blunders to this point (knock wood) but do let me know if you see (or even suspect) a mistake.

Cheers,
Chris

Guys,

Due to increasing time pressures I'd like to put out that I'm also now
willing to accept any draw proposed.  While I've enjoyed this game a lot,
I'm really feeling the pressure with placements now and I'm worried about
missing deadlines - I really don't want that to happen.  Normally I'd try to
stick this out and just let Mike and Garry lead the tactical stuff, but with
Nigs also wanting to resolve things I think it's better to end things here
than try to grind out a resolution when we can all see which way things are
going.

From my point of view, if this alliance held, the game would end in a
three-way.  I think it virtually certain that we would break out and overrun
Greece.  However, I don't think this game should necessarily be taken as an
indication of what could normally be expecte to happen.  I think the main
reason this alliance has held so far is that it looks like it shouldn't work
and a new variant is an opportunity to test crazy stuff.  If this variant
becomes more popular - which, with a few revisions, I think it has the
potential to - I think the BSR alliance is about as likely to hold stable as
an AIT in Standard.  It can be made to work, but it's not one I think you'd
see cropping up often.

Anyway, that's my position.  Could I count this as an ongoing, permenant yes
vote for any draw proposed?

Thanks,

Ross

Variant Creation [post:16601]
BODY {
FONT-SIZE: 12px; FONT-FAMILY: verdana, sans-serif

In regards to pure variant design, also look at
unit-space ratios. You'll want round 2.0 to 2.5 spaces per unit. Go above or
below that and you'll likely run into issues. Similarly, consider stalemate
lines and consider what victory criteria make for the best gaming experience.
There are many many more similar issues of Diplomacy variant
craftsmanship.

If you want a truly polished variant, you'll be
working on such a project for years. It's easy to draw and design
a Diplomacy variant in no time. But if it's supposed to be really worth
playing, you're going to have to devote a lot of time to it as I think Ben will
readily attest.

As for the graphics side of things, use a
reasonably sophisticated graphics programme. Sure, you can do stuff in MS
Paint. But that's an incredibly primitive tool that only a masochistic variant
designer would use these days. I use Paint Shop Pro. Not the most sophisticated
software, but I've been using it for years so familiarity is a big
plus.

You needn't worry about Realpolitik implementation
before you've designed and sufficiently polished your variant. It's pretty much
the very last step.

DC317; Spring 1910 Results - Nigs   (Jun 01, 2010, 9:46 am)
Russian hunters have spread world-wide, shooting down any message-carrying pigeons.
With our German friends and allies, we shall shortly feast upon these roast pigeons in Rome. (and London, home of the French)

Variant Creation - Kenshi777   (Jun 01, 2010, 9:36 am)
The map itself is the hardest and most critical component of variant
creation. The success of your variant (defined as people wanting to
play it) will be determined by how aesthetically pleasing the map
itself is, and how balanced the gameplay is.

As for aesthetics, that largely depends on where you start, and what
kind of graphic arts skills you have. In its most basic form, one
really doesn't need anything more than MS Paint and an outline map to
get started. Here's a site I use for a lot of my maps.

http://www.d-maps.com/

Of course, the more sophisticated (and successful) variant designers
use Paint Shop Pro or more advanced software to create much more
aesthetically pleasing maps. Their efforts are often rewarded in
player appeal, as very few will sign up to play on an ugly map.

Then there are the gameplay considerations. At the very least, I
recommend these rules of thumb:

1 - Each position should have roughly equal incentive to ally with
each of its immediate neighbours.

2 - Generally speaking, a good diplomatic dynamic is created in
"triangles" (groups of three powers being co-located, with buffer
zones or other disincentives sheltering them from early attack by
outside powers)

3 - Each power should have roughly equal prospects for overall victory.

Notice these are rightly labeled recommendations, not rules. Standard
Diplomacy at least partially complies with all three, but not rigidly.
I recommend #2 in particular for the first time variant designer,
because it provides a good starting point for achieving balance. One
can have the best looking map on the planet, but players will only
give it a single try and not return if they find that certain
positions (or certain alliances) are inevitable.

Finally - I can not recommend the Realpolitik adjudicator program
highly enough. It supports variants, has a very user-friendly
tutorial for the newbie variant designer, and is widespread throughout
the Diplomacy community. And of course, it's free, found here at the
creator's website -

http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net

Hope this helps -
B.

Yes, I have a thought for a Diplomacy variant (well a couple of variants),
but I've never operated an idea aimed to eventually be on the computer. How
would I go about doing this?

DC313: Spring 1910 Adjudication - Samnuva   (Jun 01, 2010, 7:58 am)
Sorry I'm late. Yesterday being U.S. Memorial day and all, I thought it was Sunday. The map continues to shift, as Turkey's march west continues and England takes a stand in the English Channel. We have an I/T draw End Game Proposal, so please give me votes with your fall orders. We had one retreat, Italy's A Trieste, but that had only one option, so I've sent it to venice.

Oh - puh - lease!!!!  Germany is as responsible for RUssia being the size it is as RUssia herself is.

The German government is weak and ineffective and has rolled over for the Russian.  Italy and I have
not spoken to Germany since there is no point.

Meanwhile, the Russian behemoth rolls forward. Who can stop it?! The Italian diplomatic effort seems to have dried up... at least, no more bricks have been lobbed through the Reichstag office windows. No word form the celts since they were dislocated...

The Germans sip another shot of vodka and await contact

dc311 Spring '10 Results - raybrucea   (Jun 01, 2010, 7:14 am)
When did you tell me that you had given up on the game?  I never got
that.  And when did I say that I wouldn't attack Bulgaria?

In a message dated 5/31/2010 4:37:49 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
catsfather(at)gmail.com writes:
Dear Austria, dear Germany, there are times when lying serves a purpose.
One, or both of you has won this game. I give you that. But the pair of you do
seem to lie just out of habit. No gain, but you need to lie.

Sev - arm?  Even if you'd got it it'd be no use.

Everything - bul? I told you I've given up on the game and the dots are
yours. Why try a clearly pointless move to get one a year early?
