DC317; Spring 1910 Results - Nigs   (Jun 01, 2010, 2:41 am)
Spring Bank holiday here in the UK - a low key public holiday, which grew out of factory holidays for Whit Monday.
Mostly seems to involve gardening and barbecues.

DC287 - Winter 2004 - Viper   (Jun 01, 2010, 12:25 am)
Of course, by "May" I meant "June."  The next deadline did not happen in the past.

Mexico:

Amazon:
Disband F Gulf of Guinea

Russia:

Congo:

Persia:

No Adjustment Needed

China:

Disband F East China Sea
Disband F Sea of Japan

Oceania:
Build F Sydney

Note: Russia trades his home centres Nizhniy-Novgorod and Helsinki for the formerly European home centres Paris and Zagreb.

Next Deadline:
Spring 2005 deadline will be Friday, May 4, at 1pm CDT.  After that we'll have to take a little while off because I'll be away from home again (this time in Hamilton).

Ah.  One of those emails you wake the next morning and regret sending.

I apologise to everyone, but especially to Christine, to Ray, and to
Dirk.  Hopefully we can all move towards this game's conclusion without
my mistake being a problem.

Sev - arm?  Even if you'd got it it'd be no use.

Everything - bul? I told you I've given up on the game and the
dots are yours. Why try a clearly pointless move to get one a year

Meanwhile, the Russian behemoth rolls forward. Who can stop it?! The Italian diplomatic effort seems to have dried up... at least, no more bricks have been lobbed through the Reichstag office windows. No word form the celts since they were dislocated...

The Germans sip another shot of vodka and await contact

Oh - puh - lease!!!!  Germany is as responsible for RUssia being the size it is as RUssia herself is.

The German government is weak and ineffective and has rolled over for the Russian.  Italy and I have
not spoken to Germany since there is no point.

Await contact! await contact??!?? I have sent you mail over many of the last years asking, begging, pleading for you to change your position. We argued your decision to throw the game, and you said you wouldn't change. Await contact? What exactly were you waiting for? Please, tell me, because I will still give you anything you want to stop the Russian winning. I've told you that time and time again.

(Meanwhile, In the Reichstag)

General De Frog, newly promoted Secretary to the German Ministry of Capitulation, knocked once and, without waiting for a response, entered the Kaiser's War Room .

"A-hem'

"What is it De Frog?"

The Kaiser was slumped in a high backed leather chair; staring disconsolately at the map of Europe spread on the vast desk before him.

"Reports suggest that our communications to neither the Italians, nor the French governments, have been reaching their destination, Sir"

"How so?"

"Russian hunters, apparently Sir. Apparently, they've been snaffling our carrier pigeons for their suppers, Sir"

"Harumphh! - Well how then, are we to continue our mocking of the French, De Frog? Tell me that! - How are the Italians to know that we are still sympathetic, if mildly indifferent to their cause! - How then!? - We must change our strategy!"

"Indeed Sir!, perhaps we should revert to the old-fashioned method of sending an envoy, Sir? - or perhaps, in the case of the French court, a children's entertainer, Sir?"

A hint of a smile appeared beneath the Kaiser's mighty moustaches.

"That's it De Frog! Send at once our finest stonemasons to Rome and have them construct small but sturdy walls in front of the foreheads of all the members of the Italian Court. That should save them time, when planning their response. The merest gesture of goodwill, should be all that is required to master the trust of those rabble.

And what to do about the French, eh? - How do we get our message across there?"

The Kaiser drummed his fingers on the desktop

"The thing with the Children's entertainer.. I like that ... but what shall we have him say?"

"If I may be so bold Sir?, Perhaps simply have the entertainer visit the French Court, and tell the French Queen, that she and her people are all Italian-speaking, kilt-wearing, wannabe-Cockneys, Sir"

The Kaiser mused over De Frogs' suggestion.

"See it done! - and immediately! - If the clown is to reach Edinburgh before September, he must hurry!"

Carefully, the Kaiser balanced the bucket of water between the frame and the partially opened door of his office. Stifling a chuckle, he moved the stepladder out of sight and hurried back behind his desk.

I'm back and ready to tackle Gming this monster once again! Smile

Thanks Garry for filling in! You are a lifesaver! It's now somewhere around 8:30 PM CST and I have yet to receive any retreats or any adjucation from Garry (not blaming Garry, it's not his responsibility!). But unless retreats got sent to him and not me, I suppose both units retreat OTB. I'll wait to make theis official and give Garry a chance to confirm first.

Either way, I'm back at the helm and ready to steer this ship home!

DC319: Spring 1939 Moves - charlesf   (May 31, 2010, 6:37 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

I'm afraid both Michael and Jimmy failed to meet
the regular deadline. This means that Michael has now used up both of his two
grace periods accorded to him for this game. Didn't get round to bugging players
about orders as on other occasions. Just try to remember: Saturdays we commonly
have our prelim deadline. Mondays our regular moves deadline. Wednesdays our
retreats and adjustments. We all don't any grief to befall this
game.

Now, what happened this season? In terms of conquests not all that much.
Britain descended on the port of Brest, while the Rzeczpospolita has extended
her influence into Norway. In the East, Turkey stalled both Polish and German
advances, though failed to achieve the same in regards to Italy.

BTW, have any of you guys watched the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend?
Well, I'm totally jazzed that Germany won with a classy act and that we'll
now be hosting the event after 28 years for the first time. Berlin 2011 is gonna
be about as big a party as the World Cup was here in 2006! Smile

The Fall 1939 Moves are due NLT 6PM CET
on Monday, 7 June. Prelims 48 hours in advance
please.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Dear Austria, dear Germany, there are times when lying serves a purpose. One, or both of you has won this game. I give you that. But the pair of you do seem to lie just out of habit. No gain, but you need to lie.

Sev - arm?  Even if you'd got it it'd be no use.
Everything - bul? I told you I've given up on the game and the dots are yours. Why try a clearly pointless move to get one a year early?

Intersting that Arm-Che-Sar is the quickest route to the front against
Rome then (convoys included). Also that Damascus is the only Persian
home SC that allows access to Armenia. Also interesting to note that
I've used the same route to send other armies against Rome.
Just an observation Smile

DC327 - Fall 1 adjudication - bielf11   (May 31, 2010, 1:00 pm)
Fall 1: While Spring was rather quiet, this Fall it seems that the city states of Ancient Greece are eager to set up camp on new ground before the winter strikes.
The Boeotians are overwhelmed by the Aetolians and forced to retreat just when they were about to finish their camp at Phocis.
The Messenians try to sneak into Elian camp through the port of Pisatis only to find that Elian scouts had discovered their intentions and prepared a warm welcome.
And the Laconians? They loose their first naval battle against joint forces of the Atticans and the Arcolians.

Adjudication
------------------
Aetolia:
A arcania Hold
A doris Supports F locris - phocis
F locris - phocis

Retreats
-------------
Laconian F laconicus sinus can retreat to no fewer than 5 areas: Messeniacus sinus or Laconia or Helos or Koidaunas or Prastos; or else OTB.
Boeotian A phocis can retreat to Opus or Helicon; or OTB.

Deadline for retreats is Wednesday, June 2 at 7pm GMT.
However, I will adjudicate retreats once all retreat orders are in. If you want to order Prelim Retreats you have to say so or else I assume it to be Final.

That's so broad a question that you'd have to
specify as to what in particular you're interested about. Design proper,
graphics software, Diplomacy software... Those are three entirely different
subjects.

If you want any useful hints, perhaps you should
first relate to us what gives rise to this question. Do you have any particular
project in mind?

Yes, I have a thought for a Diplomacy variant (well a couple of variants), but I've never operated an idea aimed to eventually be on the computer. How would I go about doing this?
Variant Creation (Community) Kenshi777 Jun 01, 09:36 am
The map itself is the hardest and most critical component of variant
creation. The success of your variant (defined as people wanting to
play it) will be determined by how aesthetically pleasing the map
itself is, and how balanced the gameplay is.

As for aesthetics, that largely depends on where you start, and what
kind of graphic arts skills you have. In its most basic form, one
really doesn't need anything more than MS Paint and an outline map to
get started. Here's a site I use for a lot of my maps.

http://www.d-maps.com/

Of course, the more sophisticated (and successful) variant designers
use Paint Shop Pro or more advanced software to create much more
aesthetically pleasing maps. Their efforts are often rewarded in
player appeal, as very few will sign up to play on an ugly map.

Then there are the gameplay considerations. At the very least, I
recommend these rules of thumb:

1 - Each position should have roughly equal incentive to ally with
each of its immediate neighbours.

2 - Generally speaking, a good diplomatic dynamic is created in
"triangles" (groups of three powers being co-located, with buffer
zones or other disincentives sheltering them from early attack by
outside powers)

3 - Each power should have roughly equal prospects for overall victory.

Notice these are rightly labeled recommendations, not rules. Standard
Diplomacy at least partially complies with all three, but not rigidly.
I recommend #2 in particular for the first time variant designer,
because it provides a good starting point for achieving balance. One
can have the best looking map on the planet, but players will only
give it a single try and not return if they find that certain
positions (or certain alliances) are inevitable.

Finally - I can not recommend the Realpolitik adjudicator program
highly enough. It supports variants, has a very user-friendly
tutorial for the newbie variant designer, and is widespread throughout
the Diplomacy community. And of course, it's free, found here at the
creator's website -

http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net

Hope this helps -
B.

In regards to pure variant design, also look at
unit-space ratios. You'll want round 2.0 to 2.5 spaces per unit. Go above or
below that and you'll likely run into issues. Similarly, consider stalemate
lines and consider what victory criteria make for the best gaming experience.
There are many many more similar issues of Diplomacy variant
craftsmanship.

If you want a truly polished variant, you'll be
working on such a project for years. It's easy to draw and design
a Diplomacy variant in no time. But if it's supposed to be really worth
playing, you're going to have to devote a lot of time to it as I think Ben will
readily attest.

As for the graphics side of things, use a
reasonably sophisticated graphics programme. Sure, you can do stuff in MS
Paint. But that's an incredibly primitive tool that only a masochistic variant
designer would use these days. I use Paint Shop Pro. Not the most sophisticated
software, but I've been using it for years so familiarity is a big
plus.

You needn't worry about Realpolitik implementation
before you've designed and sufficiently polished your variant. It's pretty much
the very last step.

Yes, I have a thought for a Diplomacy variant (well a couple of variants),
but I've never operated an idea aimed to eventually be on the computer. How
would I go about doing this?

How do I go about downloading and unzipping variants that didn't come with the initial realpolitik download?
