Italys NBR - Douglas_E_Fresh (Apr 30, 2010, 10:51 am) |
Hey everybody,
I've double-checked and had received no build orders from Italy.
Annoyingly, I had failed to include the adjustments on the email - and also even more annoyingly, I did not include Italy's adjusments on the map. Nor did I send a reminder - I have been snowed under this week - you can probably tell.
I am in a quandry. While it is Italy's responsibility to supply me with orders, I feel I have failed him as a GM, or even worse, misled him by my mistake on the map. The deadline was short and I am concerned that the failure of the build order will affect the game in a completely adverse way.
I am within my rights to either continue the game with no builds, or I can overule the NBR.
If I overule the NBR and allow Italy builds, would you find this acceptable? I'd like a show of hands please. Let me know if you think it is in the best interest of the game to allow Italy a build order, or not, by return mail asap
Thanks & Apologies

Dear Players,
There are various arguments raised here. I am personally of the opinion that anything which keeps the game on track and 'in the spirit of the game' should be encouraged.
However, I have had a mail from Mike (GM who runs Diplomatic Corps) and he states that Italy did not submit build orders. End of Story. I personally think this willl have an adverse affect on the game - given the circumstances and I apologise my part in it, but rules as they say are rules.
No builds for Italy this year and the game moves on as is.
Regarding the collusion between players outside the game - This is news to me and I have no reason to suspect any foul play.
Best

"Force disband?" That's kind of a pessimistic way to look at it. Early retirement? Health coverage, full benefits, I'm sure. I can't imagine the Bulgarians would be inhumane.

Hey all,
England was a no-show again, so I used the Blitz house rules to adjucate his disbands:
Units furthest from the nearest home center before units closer to the nearest home center
Units not in a supply center before units in a supply center if equidistant from home
Fleets before armies if still no unique unit selected per above
Alphabetical
Fortunately I only had to get to #2 to resolve. Remember the FIR and DIAS votes are due with Spring moves.
ADJUCATION:
England:
Remove A Picardy
Remove F Helgoland Bight
France:
Build F Brest
Build A Paris
Russia:
Build A Moscow

A massively well-orchestrated and coordinated attack on Russia in the Balkans by Turkey and Italy has seized Russia's last two Balkan SCs, but will, alas, not be forcing any disbands for their victim. The two retreats are both John's. I'll Auto his A Bud to Galicia, but I still need an order for A Sevastpol. Assuming no disbands, build quotas are:

dc-316 fall 1905 results! - coryfucius (Apr 29, 2010, 5:40 pm) |
The French Revolution must be back on, as we have another NMR from France... thus allowing England to gain Belgium and retain control of the undefended Liverpool. Germany manages to avoid a removal, as the black army picks up Marseilles to offset the loss of Sweden to Russia. His gain may be short-lived, however, as Italy sends most of its navy sailing westward. Russia gains Constantinople, and Italy backfills the vacated Bulgaria with a support to overcome Russia's unsupported move from Rumania.
There is one autumn retreat, but the French army in Belgium can only go to Picardy, so I'll go ahead and order that retreat. Yes, that army could be retreated OTB, but France would still have a removal due anyway. Matthew, if you do want to retreat OTB instead, please let me know right away, so I can update the autumn results.
Winter 1905 adjustments, due tomorrow, Friday 4/30 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT, will be as follows:
England: build 1
France: remove 2
Italy: build 1
Russia: build 2
Turkey: remove 1
Thanks, everyone!
Cory

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860 Fall 1865 Results: Torin... - Kenshi777 (Apr 29, 2010, 5:23 pm) |
Torino was the first capital of United Italy, and here in our Balkan
wars, it is the last Italian home SC to fall before the Greek and
Austrian forces. Yet the daring Italian partisans survive under the
fearless leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and continue their raids
from a new base in Salzburg. Greece and Rumania are our leaders this
turn, each adding 2 SCs to their totals.
Fighting is fierce across the continent, and despite many dislodges,
we have no retreats due - the poor armies in question find themselves
forcibly disbanded. So we proceed straight away into the Winter
Adjustments, which will be due on Monday 3 MAY 2010, at 1700 EST.

"Force disband?" That's kind of a pessimistic way to look at it. Early retirement? Health coverage, full benefits, I'm sure. I can't imagine the Bulgarians would be inhumane.

Moves due in less than 24 hours! Still waiting for a few!

DC 306: Sengoku Rev6DP - Fall 1572: Hojo Ujiyasu - Kenshi777 (Apr 29, 2010, 5:02 pm) |
Hojo Ujiyasu was the third daimyo of the Sengoku-era Hojo clan that
began with Ise Shinkuro, who took the name Hojo Soun. From humble
beginnings in Izu province, the Hojo greatly expanded their holdings,
and succeeded in bringing nearly the entire Kanto region under their
sway for over 70 years. Only the legendary Toyotomi Hideyoshi, at the
head of a 200,000 man army, was able to remove the Hojo from power and
unify Japan under his control.
Our Hojo player has achieved all the glory of his historical
counterpart and more. Surging ahead to 7 SCs, largely at Oda's
expense, Hojo is now tied with Mori for second place in our game, and
each only one SC behind our leader, Chosokabe Motochika.
Sadly, Takeda's attempt to seize Hida fails, and we bid farewell to
our first player. Nathan, thanks for sticking this one out, I think
the map is largely to blame for your misfortune, and will be revised
accordingly.
***TEAHOUSE COMMENTARY: Satomi Yoshihiro trembles in Hitachi, and
offers grateful prayers as the hooves of Hojo and Uesugi cavalry drive
west. Mighty Shingen of Takeda is driven into exile, and watches to
see the fate of his rivals. The Yamana clan of Inaba are driven from
their home, the latest of many ancient clans that find ruin in the
Sengoku-Jidai.

YOUNGSTOWN ANYONE? (Variants) dknemeyer May 06, 02:24 pm |
Why is Youngstown such a popular variant? I'm not suggesting it shouldn't be, but it seems to rank up there as one of a handful of variants people talk about a lot and show interest in. Is it the colonial nature of it? The fact it accommodates a lot more players? Or...? Just trying to catch the fever. |

Not one of my favorites by a long shot, and I suspect not really the
most popular as the DipWiki claims either.

Youngstown Anyone? (Variants) FuzzyLogic May 07, 11:36 am |
Wow.
The Youngstown game is the most popular of the many Diplomacy variants.
That's quite a statement. I'd like to know where the writer of that article came up w that. It's certainly not as popular (2 games) as say Ancient Med (6 games) or Colonial (8 games) in terms of activity here at dc.
The original Youngstown variant was pretty pathetic. The rendering for Realpolitik was choppy, with hard to understand off-board locations. A couple years back tho it was redone, and the new one is actually quite nice. I would say it's really good since the redo.
In my opinion, the desire for it comes from the two most popular games, Standard and Colonial. It simply bridges the gap between the two. |
Youngstown Anyone? (Variants) Kenshi777 May 07, 01:54 pm |
i should probably shut my mouth right now so as not to be perceived as
arrogant or offensive
but i can't
so...
Youngstown was okay - for its time. The variant design community has
come a long way since then however. The explosion of online groups in
the late 90s caused a sort of rebirth of the Diplomacy hobby, and
dramatically increased the opportunities for variant designers to
collaborate and refine their games.
Even the name Youngstown reflects this trend. The variant was
designed by a Dip community in Ohio that at the time still primarily
played face-to-face. Today, Diplomacy variants are subjected to a
truly global court of public opinion, one that expects much higher
standards of balance and aesthetics out of a variant. And rightly so.
Nothing is more annoying than drawing France in Colonial and knowing
the odds of even scraping out a survival are against you, or trying to
make sense of
Youngstown's off-board regions while looking at the unusual blob that
is supposed to represent Asia.
I have many fond memories of working with Don Hessong to playtest his
early versions of Ancient Med, and working with David Cohen to refine
Sengoku back in 2000. Out of these early partnerships, the DVWorkshop
was born, and though that group has certainly passed its heyday in
favor of gaming community groups like this one, the current group of
successful variant designers still collaborate extensively. Case in
point - Oliver Auth's recent coding of SengokuRev5 and South American
Supremacy for webDiplomacy, and Mario Huys' and Manus Hand's coding of
Sengoku Rev5 for the DPjudge. During those processes, all of them
contributed valuable advice obtained through playtesting.
I don't claim to be the authoritative voice in variant design, or that
mine are the best around. In fact, my favorite variants *aren't* my
own. Those honors go to Ancient Med, with up-and-coming variants like
Known World 901 and WW2-1931 deserving honorable mention. Nor do I
mean to be overly critical of Youngstown - just saying it needs a
facelift, and to be subjected to the same painful process of playtest
and revision that say, Ancient Med (finalized on Version 9) did.

dc224 Fall 18 Results - Chapter 36: EGP Frenzy Cla... - offdisc (Apr 29, 2010, 12:42 pm) |
Mike,
I voted YES to the 3 draws that included the Ogres. I also said I'd
vote for the DIAS I proposed. We'll see if everyone else complies.

Hey, I was clear to all who inquired that I was voting for the 4 Rogue ones!
I will continue to vote yes on any that include the Rogues, and no to any
that don't. If at some point one passes, that's great. Is there any combo
that all would agree to? I guess it's up to you Mike, with a third of the
centers on the map, it really depends if you're willing to concede to a draw
or if you'd like to press on.

Subject: dc224 Fall 18 Results - Chapter 36: EGP Frenzy Clarification!
I was asked to clarify which EGP's were voted down. They were:
Rogues/Ogres
Rogues/Ogres/Trolls
Rogues/Faeries
Rogues/Faeries/Pirates
Pirates/Faeries
Pirates/Ogres
There was NO DIAS proposal up for voting in that last round. There is one up
for voting for Spring 19.
A simple reminder: I count as final the last set of orders AND votes
received to me at adjudication.
Garry

Subject: dc224 Fall 18 Results - Chapter 36: EGP Frenzy!
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 22:53:01 -0400
All EGP's Fail! But Don't Worry, Chapter 37 is Sure to Have Some New Ones!
Pirates Look for a New Foe?
Ogres Get Pushed Back? Nonetheless They Taunt the Troll Fleet That They
Destroy!
What Next? Does An Upcoming Chapter Hold Peace for the Races? This GM Doubts
It!
The ELVES Make a Rare Appearance to Get an EGP Inclusion?
All,
Lots of work here. I apologize for the delay but there were many things to
check on this one (darn voting on EGPs!). Here we go though.
First - our EGP's ALL fail. But worry not! We have new ones:
DIAS
R/F/T/O
R/F/T/P/U
R/F/T/P/U/E
Yes! The Elves has come out of the forest long enough to make an appearance
for a draw. As the Elven king, I would like to publicly vote YES to that
draw (sorry Ogres!). Yes, that EGP was for real; I know I have been
entertaining but not even I would bend my GM powers that far...BUT I would
bend them that far to give me a draw if it passes!!!!
Votes on these are due with our Spring orders which will be due by next
Thursday the 6th at 6pm CST.
But, before we get there, we have Fall business to attend to. There were two
retreats and both had only one option - F Razor's Edge could retreat to
Kara-Tur and F The Maw could retreat to Knockshegowna. Each of these were
auto-retreated. Mike has the option of going OTB with each of these if
desired (but unlikely given that this game does not have Chaos builds).
That moves us to Winter where we have the following adjustments (unless Mike
chooses to retreat either or both OTB):
Faeries: Supp 15 (Blocked 0) Unit 15 Build 0
Ogres: Supp 33 (Blocked 0) Unit 33 Build 0
Pirates: Supp 10 (Blocked 1) Unit 9 Build 1
Rogues: Supp 21 (Blocked 0) Unit 21 Build 0
Trolls: Supp 15 (Blocked 1) Unit 13 Build 2
Undead: Supp 8 (Blocked 2) Unit 5 Build 1
Naturally the Ogres could build 2 if they choose 2 OTB retreats.
Let's have Winter adjustments by Friday the 30th at 6pm CST. Votes are not
due until the next Spring (and would not take effect until then so PLEASE
also submit Spring 19 orders).
Fight on Storytime Creatures! AND DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THE ELVEN DRAW!!!

Garry
