It's oh so quiet - Slangers   (Apr 29, 2010, 12:04 pm)
Late in the afternoon as during late summer, Marshall Grenouille left his bunker and strode among the crowds thronging the Champs Elysees. Walking towards the Eifel Tower it suddenly struck him that Paris was completely silent. Summoning an aide he boomed, "What is the meaning of all this nonsense?". "Mon cher Marshal," replied the aide, "it is the city holding it's breath awaiting the outcome of our noble defensive manouevres to the west. Our fate is in the balance as we face the might hordes of England and Germany. The people are frightened by the Anglo-Boche aggression".

"Pah!", replied the Marshal. "We shall prevail no matter what. Those cases of Greek ouzo sent by the Pasha have been used to create a new deadly form of munitions. Munich will be reduced to rubble. London will be annihilated. We will triumph and put an end to all of this Oktoberfest nonsense. We will put an end to feesh and cheeps and the rest of that foul cuisine so favoured by the English."

"But what of the Russians and the Italians, sir", quivered the aide.

"Ah, what of them, indeed. Their silence speaks volumes. The French people must pray that if we unjustly fall victim to treachery, our noble friend the Pasha will launch his programme of 'education' among the Italian and Russian forces. Now call me a taxi, I have an appointment at the Russian embassy."

dc285: The preparation and serving of Carthage - sgttodd   (Apr 29, 2010, 11:57 am)
There's a little voice in me, with a Yiddish accent, that sounds like my grandmother, and always says things like "Vhatch your tucas, you're leaving it out vhere za dog can bite it."
I should listen to that voice - cause it always turns out to be right, but yet I don't, and I get my tucas bit.
Case in point - this game.
I wanted to ally with Rome. It looked to me (Carthage) like the best bet and most workable arrangement. Yeah, it involved a little bit of retrograde motion to secure the Western Med, but that could be done almost at leisure as the main body of phalanx and fleets headed east.
But Rome didn't talk much, and by contrast, Egypt wouldn't shut up. He was like a used car salesman, and despite the warnings of my inner Yid, I bought the jalopy.
It seemed to be going well, then there came a time when continuing the push into Europe required leaving the house unguarded. Here's where you either trust or don't trust your neighbors. I played through various scenarios in RW and opted to trust my neighbor and make the push. It meant gaining a position to subdue Rome and be ready to face Persia in the North if my "ally" decided to make the 3-way a 2-way. The push was as fancy a set of maneuvers as one could manage in this game, and I was sure the Roman gulped when the results hit his email box. For sure, I was all smiles. Ah, those heady days.
Back to business and looking ahead, I "wargamed" out the situation in RW and the realization that Egypt could sweep west in two moves and pretty much do me in and there was literally nothing I could do about it - made ME gulp. I confronted him, got jokes in reply, took that as a "Yep, I'm doing just that" and tried to recall the far flung legions home to defend the realm. Too late. The doors just fell off that jalopy I bought.
Egypt swept in like the Christmas tsunami. Rome wasn't interested in a truce, even though it was obvious he was next on the menu. I'm sure he felt I stabbed him and was happy to see me get mine. I spent the last turns fighting a guerrilla war, more against Rome, oddly, than Egypt. I though of begging Persia for help - he could make Egypt experience my pain and had a lot to gain by it, but something told me it wouldn't fly, so I didn't. It was all but over and Rome was doomed as well with Persia riding across the North after the demise of Greece. In the end, a "survival" is better than an "elimination" so I voted for the draw.
Lessons have been learned and I will always, from now on, listen to my inner Yid.

Alright, the missing set is in. I'm going out tonight directly from work, but will try to adjudicate when I get home (which will probably be rather late). Worst case scenario, I'll do it in the morning.

DC 298 Fall 1916 Adjucation - untitled36   (Apr 29, 2010, 11:19 am)
I caught this mistake while adjucating my other blitz game. I used DPY to same the BMP, but I forgot to convert it to the gif, so the map was an old one. Clark also reminded me of this. Thanks Clark!

So the revised map is attached. The one of the dc site is still the old one, and unless anyone really cares, I plan to leave it that way for now. You all have the new map, and that's all that really matters.

DC 312 Fall 1905 adjucation - untitled36   (Apr 29, 2010, 11:16 am)
Hey all,

Sorry I'm a bit late with the adjucation. Work is actually expecting me to do things today. The nerve!!!

Munich is dislodged with the cooperation of three nations, and Spain is similarly dislodged, while Russia loses Norway to the English. Quite a lot of movement over all, mainly towards the primary stalemate line.

We also had three retreats, but if I'm correct they all have only one available option, so: Spa (NC)-Por, Mun-Ber, Nwy-Ska. Of course, OTB is always a possibility.

Moves and adjustments (assuming the retreats stand) are below.

DC 285: Egyptian EoG - AceRimmer   (Apr 29, 2010, 11:05 am)
"When, in the Course of Ancient human events, it becomes necessary for four peoples (one being eradicated) to dissolve the political bands which have separated them from each other..."

This has to be one of the best end-game announcements I have ever read.  Positively brilliant, Maslow.

Five short game years.  That was all.  Short game.  Should be a short EoG, right?  Uh, yeah...  Short is not my middle name.
I will say, though, that this was a stunningly simple and straight-forward game.  When I think back on the high points and low points, there are only three decisions and one overriding theme that stand out to me.  This is in sharp contrast to other games I have played where I have forgotten the middle-game before the end-game has even resolved, on account of all the twists and turns.  Well, this one wasn't twists and turns.  If Diplomacy were pasta, then great games would be fusilli, whereas DC 285 was a flat lasagna noodle.
For full disclosure, this was my first game of Ancient Med; indeed, that's why I signed up for it: to see how it plays.  I feel I was partly successful in my goal, but I'm sure my conceptions are doubtless in some degree misconceived.  For instance, (based more on my browsing of past games than of this game), I'd say the strongest position is Carthage, followed by Persia, Greece, Rome, and Egypt.  [After this game is entered, the DC stats for seven games will suggest it's actually: PCREG].  But the subtleties of position are not so large that player personalities won't dominate them.
One feature of note in Ancient Med is the abundance of neutral centers in Year 1.  All of us gained three builds the first year, and it seems unprofitable for anybody to start a war in the first year.  Of course, it does matter *how* those neutrals get divvied.
At first, I was worried about the nasty alliances.  CPR was my main fright, and GP bothered me.  But, with a clarity that I rarely get in Dip games, it became apparent early that none of these alliances were afoot, because nobody was talking to anybody else... except for me.  So, the early pre-war alliances that _I_ could discern were: CE nonaggression, ER nonaggression, EG v. P, and EP v. G.  Additionally, there was a very open CR (so, it's not true that nobody was talking to anybody).
All in all, I was surprised by the degree of non-communication -- especially because I have always understood communication to be the *essential* element in Diplomacy.  The winner is often the player who talks the most.  But Carthage and Persia seemed not to be talking about me behind my back.  Nor did I detect evidence of significant CG, PR, GP, or GR conversations.  (To be fair, Mike was very pre-occupied with other matters early in the game, so he couldn't write as much; and Jerry wrote good press).
I had preconceived that a three-way alliance would be necessary in this game.  It turned out that two-way was sufficient.  In fact, even though the untalkativeness of this crew was manifest, my Dip instincts kept directing me contrarily.  So, I kept assuming that *at some point* Carthage, Greece, and/or Rome were going to band together to thwart the blatant EP juggernaut.  Instead, there was just continued bickering on both the CR and GR fronts (think Neapolis and Dalmatia) -- while Mike and I gobbled up free centers.
So... the communication dynamic tilted heavily in my favor.  I got to pick my friends and stab the others.  Plus, (and I'm guessing this is rare), all three of my neighbors treated me to a the 'contested' neutral between us (Leptis from Jerry, Crete from Sam, and Jerusalem from Mike).
I'm sorry to harp so heavily on communication, but it's really really important in Diplomacy.  What's surprising is that all of us are experienced players and GMs, so I expected all of us to recognize the value of writing often (in fact, I was pretty excited when I saw the slate of players... I was expecting fireworks).  When there's not much communication, the game suffers for it, which is why DC 285 was, to be honest, pretty boring (don't let the length of my EoG fool you).  Okay, back to the game...
Early indicators were that Jerry and Mike would be good allies to me.  They wrote often, discussed tactics and strategy, and showed good game intelligence. Mark was not really present (though I have played against Mark a few times and knew in advance that he is: (a) generally overcommitted and doesn't write as much as he ought to; (b) makes for a reliable ally; and (c) makes clever though not necessarily predictable orders).
Sam befuddled me -- he barely wrote to me and seemed to write to other players even less.  I don't know why he enlisted for this game, and perhaps he decided after the fact that he didn't really have available energy for it.  He moved like an honest ally, but his short emails left much to my imagination. When I think about it, considering the relative threats to Egypt from Greece and Persia, I would've preferred to have a Greek ally.  But the communication dynamic had put a giant red target on Sam's back, and I supported Mike into Miletus without contrition.
For a couple of years, I contemplated an unconventional CEP alliance.  It seemed almost... well... just.  I felt like three players had shown up to play.  Maybe a quick 3-way draw was the fairest result.  But three considerations turned my mind otherwise.  First: I couldn't really reconcile myself to such a dull unambitious strategy (though I might have except for the next two items).
Second: okay... Mark... ARMY Rome in the first year?!?  I know you were signaling your friendly and unambiguous intentions to your Carthaginian ally, and it is a great strategy if it works, but you completely ceded the entire Western Med to Jerry if he so chose to take it.  Which he did.  Until Jerry stabbed, I did somewhat fear a strong CR alliance, but I also had Jerry boldly reassuring me that he was entirely committed to the CE alliance... I was relieved and not entirely surprised when he couldn't pass up the great opportunity to sweep toward victory and a solid corner position in the Western Med.  [Note: this was a curious impact of Sam's target-on-the-back status.  With EPR all gang-jumping Greece, the big remaining question mark was whether Jerry would attack Mark or myself.]
Three: In Fall of year 2, Jerry convoyed A Thapsus-Punic-Sardinia.  This is the move that determined me to attack Jerry (well, this move, and a whole lot of egging on from Mike).  Much the way Rome had left his western flank open to Carthage, Carthage now left his eastern flank open to Egypt.  Plus, it was pretty clear that this was a one-time opportunity -- if I didn't stab Jerry now, I'd never get another chance. So, I was free to launch my units into Jerry's backside, and found resounding success thanks especially to: (1) beneficial guesses in Fall of Year 3, (2) continued CR friction, and (3) the high improbability of GP declaring a truce and attacking my backside.
So, there you have it.  By the end of Year 3, the game was pretty much wrapped up.  The only major questions remaining were: would Mike or I stab the other?   And if not, would Rome be able to wheedle a part in a three-way draw?
So, all that's left to discuss is Persia.  Mike was an excellent ally all game long (as was Jerry up until the moment when I decided I could take all his home centers).  Mike ceded Jerusalem (with an agreement to swap it if we ever needed to balance centers).  He didn't fret about his unprotected Cyprus.  He consistently prioritized strategic goals above tactical considerations, and we coordinated our dismantling of Greece with a minimum of friction (though I think it was in Spring of Year 4 when we butted heads about his attack on Macedonia instead of dislodging my Aegean fleet... but having worked through that, we were even stronger than before).  I thought we did a good job of respecting each other's interests.  He recognized that my extended position meant I needed a little more force.  I recognized that his corner position necessitated a free outlet for expansion around Asia Minor.  And though his early gains seemed slow relative to
mine, he was well rewarded (and was soon to be rewarded even more had the game continued) by his explosive expansion once Greece finally fell.
In this last season, Mike and I both claimed to each other to have the inside track on the solo.  I am curious.  I figured I could bottle up his fleets along the Ionian-Sparta-Messenian-Crete-Egyptian front while slowly establishing myself in the Western Med (Sicilia, Neapolis, Sardinia, Balearas, maybe Roma).  His sudden successes in Europe (he was moving to Gaul in the Spring) meant that I would lose out in France (whereas I was kind of bottled up fleetwise in the West).  Plus, Jerusalem would probably eventually fall to him (but I might gain Cyprus?).  It would've been close and probably would've devolved to Mark's and/or Jerry's decisions.  And in the end, I am satisfied to claim an allied victory rather than go for my first club solo.
The only lingering question I have is about that misorder. Now that the game is over, I figure I can be confident of an honest answer: was F Punic Sea - Thaesus a mistake or an intentional misorder? I should note that I always operated under the assumption that the misorder was intentional on Mark's part. I disagreed then (and now) with the GM's ruling, but I will say that I became extra careful in my orders -- I copied and pasted my orders directly out of RP. It's probably a good habit to get into.

I do look forward to reading other EoGs. Especially from Mike, Jerry, Mark, and Sam. Those should be the good ones.

Adam

Hey all,

Sorry about the delay. My work actually expected me to DO something this morning. The nerve!!!

Anyway, Both proposals fail. Just as an official word, I am willing to honor England's request for a perpetual "Yes" on Dias. Of course, he can always send me a secret no vote too, so keep that in mind.

Board-wise, Russia and Italy continue their dance. The net result is pretty much staying the same, though Russia gains a build from Denmark. France actually makes a bit of a comeback by looting and pillaging English centers.

Important note: I would like to change the build deadline to 8:00 AM tomorrow CST (14:00 GMT).

Thanks,

dc224 Fall 18 Results - Chapter 36: EGP Frenzy Clarification! (dc224) offdisc Apr 29, 12:42 pm
Mike,
I voted YES to the 3 draws that included the Ogres. I also said I'd
vote for the DIAS I proposed. We'll see if everyone else complies.

Hey, I was clear to all who inquired that I was voting for the 4 Rogue ones!

I will continue to vote yes on any that include the Rogues, and no to any
that don't.  If at some point one passes, that's great.  Is there any combo
that all would agree to?  I guess it's up to you Mike, with a third of the
centers on the map, it really depends if you're willing to concede to a draw
or if you'd like to press on.

I was asked to clarify which EGP's were voted down. They were:

Rogues/Ogres
Rogues/Ogres/Trolls
Rogues/Faeries
Rogues/Faeries/Pirates
Pirates/Faeries
Pirates/Ogres

There was NO DIAS proposal up for voting in that last round. There is one up
for voting for Spring 19.

A simple reminder: I count as final the last set of orders AND votes
received to me at adjudication.

All EGP's Fail! But Don't Worry, Chapter 37 is Sure to Have Some New Ones!
Pirates Look for a New Foe?
Ogres Get Pushed Back? Nonetheless They Taunt the Troll Fleet That They
Destroy!
What Next? Does An Upcoming Chapter Hold Peace for the Races? This GM Doubts
It!
The ELVES Make a Rare Appearance to Get an EGP Inclusion?
All,
Lots of work here. I apologize for the delay but there were many things to
check on this one (darn voting on EGPs!). Here we go though.
First - our EGP's ALL fail. But worry not! We have new ones:
DIAS
R/F/T/O
R/F/T/P/U
R/F/T/P/U/E
Yes! The Elves has come out of the forest long enough to make an appearance
for a draw. As the Elven king, I would like to publicly vote YES to that
draw (sorry Ogres!). Yes, that EGP was for real; I know I have been
entertaining but not even I would bend my GM powers that far...BUT I would
bend them that far to give me a draw if it passes!!!!
Votes on these are due with our Spring orders which will be due by next
Thursday the 6th at 6pm CST.
But, before we get there, we have Fall business to attend to. There were two
retreats and both had only one option - F Razor's Edge could retreat to
Kara-Tur and F The Maw could retreat to Knockshegowna. Each of these were
auto-retreated. Mike has the option of going OTB with each of these if
desired (but unlikely given that this game does not have Chaos builds).
That moves us to Winter where we have the following adjustments (unless Mike
chooses to retreat either or both OTB):
Faeries:     Supp 15 (Blocked  0) Unit 15 Build  0
Ogres:       Supp 33 (Blocked  0) Unit 33 Build  0
Pirates:     Supp 10 (Blocked  1) Unit  9 Build  1
Rogues:      Supp 21 (Blocked  0) Unit 21 Build  0
Trolls:      Supp 15 (Blocked  1) Unit 13 Build  2
Undead:      Supp  8 (Blocked  2) Unit  5 Build  1

Naturally the Ogres could build 2 if they choose 2 OTB retreats.
Let's have Winter adjustments by Friday the 30th at 6pm CST. Votes are not
due until the next Spring (and would not take effect until then so PLEASE
also submit Spring 19 orders).
Fight on Storytime Creatures! AND DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THE ELVEN DRAW!!!

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - DELAY - Corrino   (Apr 29, 2010, 6:40 am)
Players -

I have heard from the missing party.  Yes, he is traveling and missed the earlier messages.  He might be able to get orders in today, but more likely tomorrow (Friday).  So for now everybody can just relax and think about all the dastardly openings your neighbors have devised to screw with you.  Smile

Besides, it's Thursday.  Blitz Day.  I wish better luck to you than I'm having right now; stabbed by Russia and looking at minus 3 this year.  Ouch!

Subject: (DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - DELAY

Hi Players,

I'm sorry to say it looks like we're not going to be able to start tonight.  I have only six sets of orders.  I have not heard from the seventh player since he turned in preferences yesterday morning.

It so happens that I have known this person for many years and I know him to be EXTREMELY reliable.  His DC record backs that up.  Therefore, I have to believe that he has just been away from his computer since yesterday or there has been some other kind of unavoidable glitch.  Since I didn't give any advance warning that I would be setting an early deadline, I don't think I can penalize him for not having them in tonight.  You'll recall that I originally emailed each of you and said that deadlines would be Tues/Fri.  I can't blame him if he proceeded on that assumption.

If I should get his orders within
the next hour, I will adjudicate tonight.  If not, it will be at least 24 hours until I can get them out.  As soon as I have them, I'll let everyone know and tell you when I'll be adjudicating.

Thanks to everyone who did hurry to get their orders in by tonight.  If you have had a change of heart, feel free to submit changes.

On a different note, I am really sorry I said anything about North Sea.  It appears I caused confusion instead of removing it.  The rules of Stab! are very simple:

NO COUNTRY OWNS ANY SEA SPACES.  YOU CANNOT START WITH A FLEET IN A SEA SPACE.  FLEETS CAN BE PLACED IN COASTAL SPACES ONLY.

Got it?  Great.

Chris

dc224 Fall 18 Results - Chapter 36: EGP Frenzy! - garry.bledsoe   (Apr 28, 2010, 9:53 pm)
All EGP's Fail! But Don't Worry, Chapter 37 is Sure to Have Some New Ones!Pirates Look for a New Foe?Ogres Get Pushed Back? Nonetheless They Taunt the Troll Fleet That They Destroy! What Next? Does An Upcoming Chapter Hold Peace for the Races? This GM Doubts It!The ELVES Make a Rare Appearance to Get an EGP Inclusion?
All,Lots of work here. I apologize for the delay but there were many things to check on this one (darn voting on EGPs!). Here we go though.
First - our EGP's ALL fail. But worry not! We have new ones:
DIASR/F/T/OR/F/T/P/UR/F/T/P/U/E
Yes! The Elves has come out of the forest long enough to make an appearance for a draw. As the Elven king, I would like to publicly vote YES to that draw (sorry Ogres!). Yes, that EGP was for real; I know I have been entertaining but not even I would bend my GM powers that far...BUT I would bend them that far to give me a draw if it passes!!!!
Votes on these are due with our Spring orders which will be due by next Thursday the 6th at 6pm CST.
But, before we get there, we have Fall business to attend to. There were two retreats and both had only one option - F Razor's Edge could retreat to Kara-Tur and F The Maw could retreat to Knockshegowna. Each of these were auto-retreated. Mike has the option of going OTB with each of these if desired (but unlikely given that this game does not have Chaos builds).
That moves us to Winter where we have the following adjustments (unless Mike chooses to retreat either or both OTB):
Faeries:     Supp 15 (Blocked  0) Unit 15 Build  0
Ogres:       Supp 33 (Blocked  0) Unit 33 Build  0
Pirates:     Supp 10 (Blocked  1) Unit  9 Build  1
Rogues:      Supp 21 (Blocked  0) Unit 21 Build  0
Trolls:      Supp 15 (Blocked  1) Unit 13 Build  2
Undead:      Supp  8 (Blocked  2) Unit  5 Build  1

Naturally the Ogres could build 2 if they choose 2 OTB retreats.
Let's have Winter adjustments by Friday the 30th at 6pm CST. Votes are not due until the next Spring (and would not take effect until then so PLEASE also submit Spring 19 orders).
Fight on Storytime Creatures! AND DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR THE ELVEN DRAW!!!

(DC 324) A Stab in the Dark - DELAY - Corrino   (Apr 28, 2010, 8:03 pm)

I can't blame him
if he proceeded on that assumption.

If I should get his orders within the next hour, I will adjudicate tonight.

Got it?  Great.

Chris

Ouch!

Chris
