DC300 - Spring 1906 adjudication - dknemeyer   (Apr 13, 2010, 8:48 am)
I tried pleading for a vote last season. Somebody is poisoning the
well. I have zero faith in an EGP passing this season no matter how
strenuously it is argued for.

Frank, I'd like to propose yet another EGP for a Russian solo. Is
there any way to decide on the EGP prior to the adjudication? My
vote goes for the Russian solo.

Guys, lets just get this over with and move on to the next game.
There is no way to prevent a solo at this point as Russia is not
under any sort of threat to lose an SC. That will put him at 18. If
you didn't send in a vote in the past please do so now, it will save
everyone some time and Frank the trouble of compiling another
adjudication.

Spring 1906: the Powers tried again to bring an end to this war but
failed once more.
The Russian Solo EGP was rejected.
And thus the war continues...
...the Turks flee Smyrna fearing a full-blown attack from the
Russians. The Russians however only ordered their fleet in
Constantinople to Smyrna; it appears that they had the right intel.
The French army in Belgium gets squeezed between the Germans and own
troops and has to disband. And if the French fleet hadn't moved out
of Marseille, the Italians would have done that by force. They are a
bit more fortunate in the south and take Tunis; a look at the map
though shows that its occupation may not last very long.
Not sure whether the Germans will be celebrating their capture of
Belgium because the Russians overtook Denmark and Berlin.
No retreats required.

DC301 - TTP - FALL 1902 MAPS - douglasefresh at googl...   (Apr 13, 2010, 7:03 am)
Agent Fresh surveyed the bleak landscape from the foothills North of Chernivtsi. Columns of smoke gave evidence to both the Yugoslav advance as well as the destruction of grain stores and supply yards by the retreating Russophile militias. Apparently Turkey now held the shipyards of Sevastopol and despite the potential for stiff fighting ahead, as the Russians found their backs to the wall, Fresh felt confident that his unit wouldn't have to face too much of it.

Collating reports from the North of Europe, Fresh wondered at the coordination of the separate realms, and wondered where the fortunes would lead them next.

I think Mick had too many fleets in the Med for any attempt to take him out by naval power alone to be realistic...whether they were spanish fleets or french fleets is immaterial

Quick one
for me, I'll reply to Michael's since it was the
most relevant to my short existence...

He's
right on that Britain sold the farm to attack me.
Andrew told me pretty honestly that he was set on going for
me no matter what, which was disappointing coming from such
a reputable player.  A closed door policy usually gets
you nowhere in this game, and it got us both
eliminated.  I take solace in Britain being
eliminated too.  Good game all, particularly Michael
for being ready to capitalize on the board dynamics to
wipe out two players, and the others for locking down a
draw.  Of course it was perfectly GM'd for the
short while that I was in it!  Michael - perhaps a Spain working for you vs
Egypt might have made some impact?

Anyways, 0 for 2 in
Modern, definitely not my variant...
-mike

I echo comments
about the GM - well done Alan!!

Interesting game, albeit it died a bit of a death towards
the end. The game started for me with Britain offering the
world if I joined him in attacking Spain. As Spain was the
most notorious player on the site, I quickly decided to go
with this, making a peace with Italy and Germany, my other
nearest neighbours. The campaign against Spain went well but
Germany and Italy started getting twitchy and turned on
me...I managed to hold them off until Spain was finished, at
which point the original British player left the game.
Fortunately, it was around then that German and Italy were
being pressured from the east, so they both wanted to cut a
deal with me, and as a consequence I chose to go after the
new British player, with a good degree of success. This put
me in a good position to stab Germany and Italy - somewhat
bizarrely, this was shortly followed by an offer from the
German player to cede most of his centres to me in return
for a survival and allowing him to go after/frustrate Poland
- I'm not sure what went on there in the early part of
the game, but Isaac was clearly pissed at Joey!

Overall, I guess I could have made a run at a solo - I made
a superficial attempt with a limited stab of Poland -
however a solo would have been very unlikely - there was no
way I could have taken on both Egypt and Poland and I was
rapidly reaching a stalemate against Poland anyway.

I think I was lucky in the game in having a strong,
determined early ally, and the other subsequent twists and
turns in the game fell kindly for me.

Thanks to the other players - hope to see you in future
games!

Michael

Recent Knightings! - FuzzyLogic   (Apr 12, 2010, 9:57 pm)
Hey all,
Today we welcome Adam “Smegdwarf” Martin-Schwarze and Fredrik Blom to our ranks! Skyrocketing right past Initiate Knight, and landing squarely into Knight Errant… Both have been incredibly active in dc lately, running WB games, other games, and even some new development on the site!

Lots of other advancements too, as Mikael, Matt, Garry, Jorge, Thompson, Hoffman, Warren, Jerry, Nathan, and yes, even myself all pick up a new title.

For anyone who doesn’t know (and may read this in the forums) you can get knighted once you reach the level of Captain of the Watch, which is up to 49 merits. At that point, gaining more merits will not yield a higher title until you request Knightship on the Companions pages, and then… you can you get the coveted red icon!

Onward!

Dc 299: AGE before Beauty - AlanRFarrington   (Apr 12, 2010, 7:18 pm)
Well I used to think 14 years was a long diplomacy game, but we're not even close to the last game to finish up.

A three way draw between Arch-Duke Timothy Crosby [13 centers], Her Majesty the queen, Ross Webb in England [10 centers], Kaiser Paul Russell in Germany [7 centers].

I'm sure everyone would enjoy reading end of game statements from all the different players. Feel free to group email them to everyone. As for the GM I have just a few words that I would like to relay about the makeup of this game.

First of all I would like to say that it was a pretty interesting game to GM, although to be honest I was not always focused on it, with my own blitz games going not to mention other games going. The thing I really remember is Tim's beginning. It didn't seem like any of his neighbors enjoyed being put next to him, yet somehow he managed to get 2 builds the first year and kept pushing throughout the entire game.

We did have 9 recorded NMRs this game, which has a pretty big effect. It just seems to be the nature of the beast though when we talk about Winter Blitz games, I am guilty of two myself because of the fast pace.

I hope to see you all again, either across the board as a fellow player or as the pleasure of GMing you again. Good luck with the rest of the second round!

Thank you all,

Well, let me set my side of the story, since I'm getting roundly trashed by two ... interesting players.

Congrats on Joe for the win, by the way.

The EFG triangle is certainly a challenge. Having two players who studied up on my previous games was amusing to say the least. Having Germany create a DMZ in Burgundy, and having England later take umbrage at my claim of wanting Belgium clearly defined the mindset of my neighbors.

In other words, they were looking for excuses, and found them.

I tipped my hat to Joe/Germany for turning the tables, but I took grand exception to Eric for constant emails demanding me to quit, expressing exasperation over my sticking it out, and wondering why I didn't just roll over and die.

See, I play a game to have fun, and winning isn't everything. Sorry to see that some people are so obsessed with winning that they cannot enjoy themselves in an on-line community.

I expressed a private email to Eric expressing my frustration with his boorish behavior, and when he couldn't refrain from civility, I spammed the bastard.

Onwards to the game -- there was a vastly fascinating strategem unleased by Austria/Will, and well, I had no choice but to fall in. It was deception at its finest, and propelled him to struggle for the big win, but at the expense of the Turk.

I did screw up a move at the end, and honestly not on purpose, but the writing was on the wall and I really wasn't playing with my hear into it.

Yes, I did threaten to move centers to Italy, and I did my best to do so. One does not get unduly berated by an opponent without consequences. Pushing someone too far means that they will do their best to drag the other down to hell, and note: I did not say that first!

i forgot to mention a End game proposal. We have a proposed Russia/Italy draw. Votes due with the fall moves. No response counts as a "no" vote. I'm not a winter blitz official, so don't quote me on these, but I think the final scores for you four would be Russia: 16.1, Italy: 16.0, England: 4.5, France: 4.8, if the proposal succeeded.

DC300 - Spring 1906 adjudication - bielf11   (Apr 12, 2010, 2:24 pm)
Spring 1906: the Powers tried again to bring an end to this war but failed once more.
The Russian Solo EGP was rejected.
And thus the war continues...
...the Turks flee Smyrna fearing a full-blown attack from the Russians. The Russians however only ordered their fleet in Constantinople to Smyrna; it appears that they had the right intel.
The French army in Belgium gets squeezed between the Germans and own troops and has to disband. And if the French fleet hadn't moved out of Marseille, the Italians would have done that by force. They are a bit more fortunate in the south and take Tunis; a look at the map though shows that its occupation may not last very long.
Not sure whether the Germans will be celebrating their capture of Belgium because the Russians overtook Denmark and Berlin.
No retreats required.

Frank, I'd like to propose yet another EGP for a Russian solo. Is there any way to decide on the EGP prior to the adjudication? My vote goes for the Russian solo.

Guys, lets just get this over with and move on to the next game. There is no way to prevent a solo at this point as Russia is not under any sort of threat to lose an SC. That will put him at 18. If you didn't send in a vote in the past please do so now, it will save everyone some time and Frank the trouble of compiling another adjudication.

I suspect that Sun - Russia - wants to achieve victory rather than have it handed to him, which is fine. I will once again vote for EPG. All of French forces will be holding in an attempt to bring peace to Europe and in recognition of the fine display of Russian arms and diplomacy.

DC300 - Spring 1906 adjudication (dc300) dknemeyer Apr 13, 09:09 am
Hey Bruce,

I agree this is the most logical explanation but I've talked to Sun a
fair amount in direct press and am pretty convinced he is NOT the one
delaying it. That is the source of my frustration, I think it is
happening either out of apathy or maybe somebody is just spiteful and
trying to prove a point. I'm not sure. As has been pretty clearly
illustrated, Russia WILL have the solo at the end of this year.

Not sure whether the Germans will be celebrating their capture of
Belgium because the Russians overtook Denmark and Berlin.

As Dirk said we can say what we want in public, but all it takes is someone behind the scenes to screw it all up. To be honest that hadn't occured to me, I thought that our public vote would count and I'm in favor of that being the case if at all possible.

2010/4/13 <loganlaw299-at-aol.com (loganlaw299-at-aol.com)>

That just leaves Ben: perhaps Frank does not want us calling everyone out in public.  But just to make it clear France votes YES again.  Bruce

Dirk,

I won't push up the deadline unless everyone confirms that they're okay with this.
This way we prevent that someone is not around to confirm or submit orders before the original deadline.
Public votes are okay; secret votes of course too. After all, this is Diplomacy.

Thanks,

DC300 - Spring 1906 adjudication (dc300) Sean2010 Apr 13, 10:26 am
I'm in favor of having everything done early.

My orders are in, and I vote yes to a Russian solo.

I vote in favor of an early decision, early vote. Russia votes "Yes". Is the best way for each player to individually write to you to say that they are voting for an early decision as well as what their vote is?

I've been voting yes as well. Actually, for selfish reasons (to easily join another game) I need this game to finish first! So I've been voting yes... Russia votes "Yes" again.

I agree this is the most logical explanation but I've talked to Sun a fair amount in direct press and am pretty convinced he is NOT the one delaying it. That is the source of my frustration, I think it is happening either out of apathy or maybe somebody is just spiteful and trying to prove a point. I'm not sure. As has been pretty clearly illustrated, Russia WILL have the solo at the end of this year.

A simple solution to the mystery (dc300) txurce Apr 13, 02:46 pm
Fellow DC diplomats,

Russia can solo by holding, and he can avoid eliminating Turkey by taking Kiel and withdrawing from Smyrna. It's all in his control.

If the rest of you want to find out who is voting against the solo, or foil his reason for doing so, there's a very simple solution: everyone order "All units hold."

There is no reason for any player other than Russia to be moving any units, except to extend the game.

Gentlemen,
Sorry for the slight delay of the game. I was just about to congratulate all of you that you'd been so punctual in your order submits, and then last season happened. Let's hope it was just a slight hiccup, and further delays in the game will be avoided. I have great confidence in you all.

That said, let's move on to the important stuff - the game. I think that next season is going to be very exciting. Will the Austrian/Italian alliance manage to gain entry into Russia and Germany? Will Germany land on English soil? What's happening with the Turkish Turtle? Stay tuned and see...
