dc296 Round 1 Board 6 - Fall 1908 Results - z93blom   (Mar 04, 2010, 2:45 pm)
Blitzers,

The draw proposal failed. The war continues on. However, come Spring we will see fewer participants, as both England and Turkey lose their last remaining centers. I would like to thank Mark and Maria for playing it out until the bitter end. Good luck in the next round.

Now for the interesting part:
The orders due for the remaining powers - and it's a hairy one.
First off, we need retreats for the dislodged units:

Russian A Bulgaria can retreat to Rumania or OTB
Russian A Vienna can retreat to Budapest, Galicia, or OTB
Turkish F Naples can retreat to Apulia or OTB.
French F North Sea can retreat to English Channel, Yorkshire or OTB.

Then comes the builds:
Austria: Build 1 or 0, all depending on the Russian retreats.
England: Remove the Fleet.
France: Build 2 (or 3 if the retreat is OTB).
Russia: Build 0, or 1, depending on the retreats (from Russia).
Turkey: Remove 1 (or 0 if the retreat is OTB).

Do remember that you can order conditional builds, based on the Autumn retreats.

Next turn: Autumn 1908 retreats and Winter 1908 Adjustments

[b]Next Deadline: Friday, 5th of March 2010, 19:00 GMT (7PM).

Sorry I didn't submit orders. Meant to do so when I got to work, but
an accident on my motorcycle kind of drove that out of my mind.
Suffice it to say, I'm fortunate that I was wearing a helmet. I'm
uninjured save for a giant bruise and some scrapes on my knee, and
some wrist pain. The bike is ok too. It was a pleasure playing.

DC 293: F1908 Adjudication - Jeremiah   (Mar 04, 2010, 1:10 pm)
It was a pleasure dying at your hand, Mr. Morse.

I also hope that our French leader is not just giving up, and from what I know about him, this isn't standard dip-behavior. Let's hope he's just lost his connection to the internet for some weird reason.

That is all, for now,
Jeremiah

On Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 1:55 PM, C Morse <camorse22-at-yahoo.com (camorse22-at-yahoo.com)> wrote:

The 2-way draw proposal comes from me and is endorsed by Turkey and Russia.  The Russian solo is not, and will be voted down.

I would like to echo Adam's thanks to Jean-Luc for playing the game out, despite the fact that it hasn't been much fun for him lately.  The same goes for Jeremiah earlier.  Both of them are to be commended for standing up straight and following through on their commitment to the game and all its players.  My respects to you, gentlemen.

Obviously this is in marked contrast to the 3 consecutive NMR's we've seen from France.  "Disgraceful" is the first word that pops to mind, but I can't know for sure whether the NMR's are in fact some kind of petulant tantrum or, perhaps, whether Joe is having some serious real life issues that prevent his participation in the game.  If it's the latter, I hope things are better soon and I urge you to let us know.  If it's not, well, I guess all I can say is "I'm disappointed" and I hope you'll show some more pride in the future.

I hope Eric's NMR was just a one-time aberration and not a signal that he is going down the French path.  I am happy to give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

Jeff and I decided a while ago that a 2-way draw with E and F as survivors was a sufficient result for us.  We felt no need to push things out until it was 17-17.  However, the recent spate of NMR's is making me rethink that position.

I would like to hear back publicly from Joe and Eric that they will be supporting the draw proposal.  If they do, wonderful.  We can be done as soon as Adam gets all the Yes votes.

If we don't hear from Joe in a couple of days, I believe that the three remaining players should plan as though he will NMR again.  In that case, I believe we should go along with his obvious wishes and eliminate him from the game as follows:

Turkey:  Marseilles and Spain
England:  Brest and Paris
Russia:  Belgium

We can accomplish this in the two seasons next week and then end the game.

Regards,
Chris

Short summary: orders due from ALL *surviving* players tomorrow.  Also, two end game proposal votes are due on Monday.  England and France retreat.  Russia and Turkey build.  Italy does not survive.  Our many fond farewells to Italy, a very dutiful submitter of prelims (which is high praise from a GM).  Good luck in Round 2.

"Unit to hold!"  That appears to be the order of the day.  Or, more appropriately, it's the non-order of the day.  France NMRs.  England NMRs.  My spectroscope NMRs (geek joke).  All their units hold.

Retreats due tomorrow:
English F North Sea may retreat to London, Skagerrak, Yorkshire, or off the board.
French A Burgundy may retreat to Gascony, Paris, Picardy, or off the board.

The Italian fleet with no retreat is mercilessly disbanded.

Winter 1908 is due tomorrow; orders due from Russia and Turkey:

Adjustments:
England:  Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
France:    Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Russia:    Supp 14 Unit 13 Build  1
Turkey:    Supp 11 Unit 10 Build  1

Two end-game proposals are brought forth:
Russian solo
Russian-Turkish two-way draw

Votes are needed by next Monday (not tomorrow).  Any abstention is a 'no'.  Even the proposer of the end-game proposal must vote.

Now, you may be asking yourself... what about France?  He has NMR'd all of 1908.  He has.  But he may resurface.  I would be happy if he did.  If he does not, though, the tournament rules state: "Any country that has recorded an NMR for the last 4 consecutive spring or fall adjudications will automatically vote YES on any [end-game proposal]."  This marks France's 3rd consecutive NMR.  If he should NMR again in S1909, then he would automatically count as a Yes vote for all end-game proposals beginning next Thursday (F1909).

And, finally, the adjudication:

England:

DC 306: Notes part 2 and Update to Variant Files - Kenshi777   (Mar 04, 2010, 1:04 pm)
Hello all -

Isaac made a good catch - I had updated the DipWIki rules of the
variant recently, but not the info file stored in the Realpolitik
files, which had some inaccuracies on the number of DP points each
player has. The updated RP files are attached here. (Mike - will you
please replace the ones on the DC site with these when you have a
second?)

To use these files, simply delete all contents of your current
SengokuRev6DP folder in Realpolitik/Variant Files/SengokuRev6DP and
replace them with the contents of this zip file. If anyone has
problems using RP or these files, please feel free to ask for
assistance.

Isaac also asked another good question that I should clarify for
everyone, and have now updated the DipWiki to address...

Neutral units are *not* subject to the rule of self-dislodgement.
This means that neutral units *may* support a player to attack another
neutral unit. The best way to understand this is to think of each
neutral unit as a separate position with 1 SC, rather than 1 giant
"player" with 17 SCs.

That's all for now - keep the prelims coming! And if you don't mind,
please cc me (throughout the game) on all player negotiations. These
will be kept in complete confidence, and are used for variant design
purposes only.

Thanks!
B.

DC 293: F1908 Adjudication - camorse22   (Mar 04, 2010, 12:55 pm)

In my opinion CDs should be a last resort, used only when there's just a dot or two left and no takers to play it out. Others obviously feel differently. But Darryl's suggestion to call a game a DIAS after a certain number of countries go into CD is worth considering. It's not much of a game at that point, and winning becomes almost completely based on the luck of where the leaderless countries happen to be.

DC271 Cimarra - German EOG Statment - dipknight   (Mar 04, 2010, 12:27 pm)
From the German Government in Exile;

Not much to tell from my point of view.  I worked it out with England and France at the begining of the game so that we were allies looking to pit the west against the east.  Unfortunately, they both fell into Civil Disorder, immediately after my direct attack upon Russia.

At that point, I contracted both Austria and Russia to try and work out a three way draw . . . but of course all of the abandoned resources were behind me and, therefore, left me unreasonably situated to take advantage of them without direct conflict.  In fact, Austria told me directly that he felt he could do better without me than with me and ceased all communications.

Russia, on the other hand, wanted Scandinavia for his support.  At first, all that I could see was that would give Russia two avenues with which to attack my home supplies, so I was very hard set against that idea.  At least, until the alliance between Austria and Russia became obvious; then, I really had no choice but to give Russia what ever he wanted, even the Solo.

If Austria had contacted me requesting support against Russia, I would have been more than open minded.  But then, I suppose that I could have contacted him at any point also.  Except that Austria had rebuffed me so hard after England and France was in CD that I felt it should be up to him to make first contact this time . . . which never happened.

Congratulation Ian on your solo victory.  I would have enjoyed this game better if we had found replacement players . . . even if they all turned against me at that point.  Thanks Garry for GM'ing the game.  However, if you are going to continue allowing countries to fall into CD without seeking replacement players, you might want to consider calling the game a DIAS when three countries or more are in CD.  I don't believe I had any chance once England, France and Italy were all out of the game.  It only made sense for Russia and Austria to attack me and my home supplies were immediately on the front line.  My choices were both bad; go for more supplies and hope that I had somewhere to build them or defend my home supplies and hope I could snag one or two extra while defending.

Thanks again, I hope to see you guys in another game at some point.

Darryl Good (Germany)

You're welcome, Jeremiah. I look forward with trepidation to your returning the favor some day. Smile

And I'm with you in hoping that it is some unavoidable-but-not-awful situation that has kept our Frenchman from participating. As long as you won't hold me too tightly to the analogy, it's like lying in bed awake at 2:00 listening for your teen-ager to come home. You're alternately furious at them for being so irresponsible and worried sick that they might be hurt or in trouble.

No way we can know until Joe chips in to tell us.

Hi all. I'm alive and don't be too disappointed in me. I am more reliable than this one game suggests. There have been real life issues, but not so much so that i couldn't have sent emails from my alt address.

I voted for the draw (RT) when it was 1st proposed. I didn't see how E was going to reconcile and I couldn't hold back T. I am voting for the draw again. I hope that I will get to play against you all again and prove that this game was a fluke. Adam, my retreat orders will follow this email in less than 5 minutes.

Regards,
Chris

Subject: DC 293: F1908 Adjudication

England:
A Belgium Hold

Hey all!

Virtually no movement happens in the north/west except for Bur-Ruh. Lots of attempted assaults, but all invaders were repelled.

In the south and east though, we see the destruction of two units. Turkey finally corners and scuttles the rogue fleet in Syria, and Russia walks into Budapest with an honor guard of French and Turkish troops.

Only one unit has to retreat, as Italy decides to try some baklava in Greece, and the Turkish fleet is too distracted thinking about baseball to defend themselves. F gre can retreat to Bul (sc) or Aeg (or otb).

That one retreat, and builds/disbands are due tomorrow at 15:00 GMT. Again, I may be a little late adjucating, but I'll try my best.

TTP - DC301 - Winter 1899 Map - douglasefresh at googl...   (Mar 04, 2010, 8:02 am)
Proffeseur Griffe, Commander of the League of Shadows reviewed the latest report from his agents in the field with a mixture of pride and displeasure. The reports from Northern and Western Europe had been particularly insightful and the grizzled overlord made a mental note to reward the respective agents with promotions, - should they prove fortunate and skillful enough to survive this horrific mess, of course.

Reports from the East however, had left much to be desired and in certain cases had provoked unnecessary concern. The agent tracking the Muscovite uprising was MIA and rumours abounded that 'Kamarad T' - operating from within Commander Tesarik's first army - had fallen foul of the Serbian mafia.

The various rebellious states - as Agent Fresh had predicted back in '97 - had succumbed to the insidious evil that was Nationalism. Aside from 'Russia' and 'Turkey', Griffe noted the emergence of 'The Mediterannean People's Confederation' - 'Greater Hanover' - 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Scandinavia' - 'The Frankish & Visigothic Realm' and of course.... 'Yugoslavia' to which he would now have to assign new Emissaries, Recon Teams and Assassination Squads.

The Professeur sighed and pulled the Electric Telegram to him. He was getting to old for this shit.... so without hesitation, he decided to delegate it.

***************URGENT MEMO TO AGENT FRESH, BOHEMIAN OUTPOST***************

CEASE RETURN TO ZURICH.

ESTABLISH WHEREABOUTS OF RUSSIAN AGENT - OR REPLACE BEFORE SPRING REPORT DUE.

The Professeur leant back in his suitably intimidating high-backed leather armchair and made a steeple of his fingers. He was sure Agent Fresh would be overjoyed about the mission ahead of him.

DC306: SengokuRev6DP - Notes and Questions - Kenshi777   (Mar 03, 2010, 6:36 pm)
Hi again to all -

Several of you have asked me some very good questions that I wanted to
share with the group. I also want to encourage all of you to read the
DipWIki.com entry for this variant closely - this is very important to
understanding the best strategy for this position, and the game as a
whole! (It only takes a minute!) On to the questions -

Q1 - Hey B, can you add the startmap with abbreviations to the DipWiki?

A1 - Done!

Q2 - Is there a listing of all the full province names somewhere?

A2 - Yes! Two places. In the attached Excel file, and in the orders
window of Realpolitik.

Q3 - Are there Realpolitik files for this variant available?

A3 - Yes! www.diplomaticcorp.com - click variants at the top.

Q4 - What are those six darker black lines in some sea zones on the map?

A4 - Bizen and Sanuki are considered land contiguous, as are Nagato
and Chikuzen, Iyo and Bungo, Iyo and Suo, Mikawa and Shima, and Awa
and Kii, though they appear separated by water on the map. Both
Armies and Fleets may cross from one of these territories directly to
the other. Movement by fleets through the surrounding sea zones is
unaffected. The six dark borders indicate these "bridges" on the map.

Q5 - Does this variant have chaos builds?

A5 - Yes! Meaning that there is no such thing as a "home" SC. You
may build on any vacant SC you own.

Q6 - How do neutral armies and Diplomacy Points work? Do you need
support to dislodge neutral armies? (YES)

A6 - In addition to the 8 players of this variant, there are neutral
territories, represented by White on the map. Each neutral territory
is occupied by a neutral army that may be ordered to either hold or
support another unit by using Diplomacy Points (DP).

Every spring and fall, each player in the game receives 1 Diplomacy
Point for each SC controlled (up to a maximum of 3) to use to
influence the actions of the neutral armies on the map. Each season,
players may submit orders for the various neutral armies as if they
were their own, and assign up to 2 of their total DP points to each
order. During adjudication, the order that received the most total DP
points for a particular unit is carried out. Any other orders
submitted with fewer DP points are not carried out, and those DP
points are lost. A unit must receive at least 1 DP point to execute
an order. Units receiving no DP points hold. Neutral armies, like
any other, may have their support cut by an attacking unit, and may be
supported to hold by other neutrals or players. Neutral armies are
disbanded immediately if dislodged, but rebuilt at the end of the year
if the territory is not occupied. Once occupied, the territory
becomes a standard SC, and never reverts to a neutral again.

Q7 - Can I see some examples of what Diplomacy Points orders should look like?

A7 - Yes! I will list two examples here to try and illustrate the
land bridge, neutral army, and Diplomacy points rules. Find Hoki on
the map, as both illustrations will focus on that region.

...Situation 1: DP Points. Suppose that a player has an army in
Hoki, and wants to attack Bingo to capture that SC. Bingo has a
neutral army, so the order A Hoki - Bingo will fail to dislodge the
neutral army in Bingo unless it has support. If that player also
allocates 1 or more Diplomacy points as follows - 1 DP: A Bizen S A
Hoki - Bingo - then the neutral Army in Bizen will support A Hoki -
Bingo, which will now succeed 2-1 against A Bingo. If another player
submits an order such as 2 DP: A Bizen S A Tango - Inaba, then A Bizen
will execute that order instead of the support for A Hoki - Bingo,
because more Diplomacy Points were allocated to that move. Multiple
players may add DP points to a single order to try and ensure that
their desired move is executed - but no single player may allocate
more than 2 DP points to a single neutral unit.

...Situation 2: Support of neutral units may be cut/Land Bridges. In
the same situation above, let us assume that Chosokabe orders A Sanuki
- Bizen. Then although A Bizen will try to support A Tango - Inaba,
the support is cut by A Sanuki - Bizen, as it would be with any other
army. Notice that A Sanuki - Bizen is a valid move, because Sanuki
and Bizen are connected by the dark lines indicating narrow channels
that armies can cross without being convoyed, as mentioned above.

There you have it - hope all this helps! Do please continue to ask
any questions you may have - once you understand the concepts listed
above, Sengoku is very easy to play.

[quote:3c4b4711bb]Hello again players - we now have 8 people signed up for our round of
the latest Sengoku playtest, and are ready to assign positions and
begin. As the game announcement has been open for some time now, I
would like all players to send me a quick email to confirm they are
still committed to playing the game, and ready to begin. Please also
send me your preferences if you have not done so already. As soon as
I receive confirmation from all 8 of you, I will assign countries and
announce the first deadline.

My house rules for this game follow - one key thing to emphasize -
NMRs *will* be adjudicated, and deadlines will be adhered to strictly.
If you require an extension or absence, see my house rules (attached)
for the submission timeline.

I encourage all of you to read the Dip Wiki entry for the variant
throughly...(takes all
of a minute or two). It explains the variant in detail (it's very
simple really - only three concepts distinguish it from standard - 1 -
build on any vacant owned SC, rather than home SCs only - 2 - neutral
armies - 3 - DP points).

I have also made two recent changes (copied below) to the DP points
system, and the victory criteria, which was lowered from 22 to 21 SCs.
If you read the DipWiki a while ago, it might be good to revisit it
now. The variants page on the diplomaticcorp.com site is also the
place to download the Realpolitik files, which is of course the very
*best* way to get familiar with a new variant.

Example orders (Hojo):

F Izu - Sagami
A Sagami - Hitachi
F Kazusa S A Sagami - Hitachi
Neutral A Kozuke S A Sagami - Hitachi (2 DP)
Neutral A Musashi S A Sagami - Hitachi (1DP)

Presuming that other players do not outbid the Hojo orders, both A
Kozuke and A Musashi will support A Sagami - Hitachi. Along with F
Kazusa's support, A Sagami now has three supports against Hitachi.

Victory is declared when one Daimyo has control of 21 SCs, or all
other players concede defeat. Unlike previous versions, all types of
draw proposals are now acceptable. Have fun and welcome to 16th
Century Japan!"

I'd also like to ask that all players that sign up for the game commit
to turning in prelims each season as soon as they receive the results,
and also commit to playing the game through to completion. Finally,
do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions about the variant - I
will always be willing to confirm whether a set of orders is valid, or
to explain how I would adjudicate a particular set of orders, and why.
(Of course, I can't advise if its a good idea or not Smile

Thanks!

O great hoofed one. We could .....maybe.......possibly......have maybe some idea of the whereabouts of the one you speak of. We have heard rumors ...vague rumors....that the one you described could possibly have been seen in our lands frequenting some of the local watering holes (that means pub in leprechaun. Not literally watering holes of the variety you are probably familiar with.). May I inquirer about local legal statues in your realm? Just curious. Always trying to learn more about other cultures and practices........We will be on the lookout for your precious "Hoofy." I would not worry she is of age and can probably take care of herself.

GM Notes:

Vacations: Some players have already sent in when they’ll be away. That’s great, and I’ll schedule around that to ensure that players always have at least two business days (M-F) of dipping time on any turn… but I will not post anything to the group about who is away. That is up to the individuals if they want such to be known.

Prelims: A few players got moves in fairly close to the last day. Again I can’t stress enough how much you should get in the habit of using prelims. With 19 players in the game, it is definitely easier on me if I go to check my folder a couple days before the deadline and have 19 sets ready and waiting.

And so we have our first turn results! Navies clash over the Sea of Shadows and the High Seas, while armies battle for the Kingdom of Hearts and Sinking Shore.

**************************************************

And so we have our first turn results! Navies clash over the Sea of Shadows and the High Seas, while armies battle for the Kingdom of Hearts and Sinking Shore. Other than those it seems most players got out their opening moves in one form or another, tho the fall turn looks to be intense as many key centers are going to be decided.

DC287 - Three missing sets - FuzzyLogic   (Mar 03, 2010, 11:24 am)
To show our love for our mates down under the United Amalgamated Jungle States of Central and South Africa and Outlying Areas (UAJSCSAOA for short) will support this proposal for Oceanic victory.

Anyone else?

Oh and on other matters, we're all still on for the big stab of Oceania right?...

I think the only real way of solving it is giving victory to the Oceanic power and survivals to everyone else.

Hey guys... I'm starting to sound like a broken record here... the deadline has passed and once again, I'm short orders. It's one thing when there's just one set missing, but three? All orders I have have been recognized, so if you don't have that from me, I don't have orders from you. I'll check back in a few hours and if we're still at this state, I'll see if I can come up with some way to fix this problem we seem to be having.

1648 091010: Summer 1654 Retreats - charlesf   (Mar 03, 2010, 9:59 am)
Hallöle,

other than perhaps the Polish retreat, this summer season has been quite straightforward. Will this Polish outpost have to surrender come fall or manage to escape that fate? Stay tuned.

Preliminary Fall 1654 Moves are due on Saturday, 6 PM CET.

Tschau,

Charles
