Hi,
This site...

http://realpolitik.sourceforge.net/Variant_Creation.html

..will tell you everything you need to know technically, on building a Realpolitik Variant.

For designing the map, I would suggest you use an art program that supports layers. Illustrator, Corel, Paint Shop, most of them support such, but MS Paint does not. I use an old version of Paint Shop Pro which works just fine.

Layers you'll need to be able to turn on / off...

Base layer (transparent)
White layer (white)
Borders layer (black lines making up the country borders)
Tan and Blue (shade countries tan, waters blue)
Texts (any flavor text or space names)
Artwork (any original art in the frame, etc)

This way you can turn on just the white and black layers (possibly text layers too, to exclude text from the shading in RP) to save a black-and-white borders image, which is the first thing you need to make an RP variant. Then later you can turn on the colors, texts, and artwork to save the colorful bmp that you'll need as the last step. When you have those layers and you can export a good b/w image, then you can start the tedious RP process of defining the map and region files, per the above link.

Many folks have made variants here, so just ask any questions and I'm sure you'll get feedback.

DC289: 24h Warning - Rocketship   (Jan 20, 2010, 10:36 am)
I had indeed intended 05:00GMT to mean 5am GMT. The deadline then translates to late evening on Tuesday for our North American players.

I apologize for the confusion.

Variant Creation - midnightgreen   (Jan 20, 2010, 9:27 am)
Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the site but have been playing diplomacy for a few years. I'm particularly interested in creating my own variants. I've got a few that I've got a map laid out for, but I'm basically computer-illiterate and so I don't know how to effectively draw the map and create the realworld files needed. Could anyone help me out or at least point me in the right direction? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

In addition to the programs Mike mentioned you could use GIMP. Contrary to most of the other programs this is free, opensource and platform independent. While it does offer very sophisticated tools.

I have used it for my variant of Viking and Scorched Earth. As for some of the Fog of War games.

Well...

We have orders from almost all players, but no word from Turkey.

I don't think I can really be anymore lenient, so I think we need to go ahead and look for a replacement. Once we find one, I think I'll allow another week for negotiations (and I'll still accept orders from all of you) before the Spring 1901 deadline.

I apologize for the delay.

DCI s08 (Pop goes the fleet?) - FuzzyLogic   (Jan 19, 2010, 3:39 pm)
Before we get started with this spring's adjudication, I'd like everybody to take a moment to do this little exercise. First take your index finger, and extend it straight out - possibly with a slight curviture. Next, insert said finger into your mouth, and set the pad of your finger comfortably against the concave arch of your cheek. Then by applying a moderate amount of outward pressure in a quick yet controlled fashion, snap your wrist outward, causing your finger leave your mouth with a popping sound. Now that my friends, is the last sound the Italians hear in Albania as their fleet gets popped. Some creative orders by Austria see one less unit on their border. Will it be enough to save the once-grand empire? Well with the French moving to Tuscany, there's no telling what may happen next!

There is one Retreat - Italian A Ven may retreat to Pie or Rom by tomorrow 3pm Central, then fall will be due Monday 1/25.

Enjoy!

DC281 Fall 1903 moves - psychosis1973   (Jan 19, 2010, 3:18 pm)
Some exciting developments on the board this turn!

In the west, France convoys to the English mainland, but the army leaving Belguim is replaced by a German army, and with Germany marching into Burgundy, we may be seeing German dominance of France soon. Germany also sneaks into Sweden.

In the East, Turkey and Austria work together to great effect, evicting Italy from the Ionian Sea and destroying Russia's Ukranian army, which seemed to be expecting an Austrian move on Turkey.

One retreat needed from Italy...can this be submitted asap, but by 2100 GMT tomorrow (Wednesday 20th) please, or the unit will be disbanded. We can then move onto the Winter adjustment phase...

Italian F Ionian Sea can retreat to Tunis or Tyrrhenian Sea or

DC 285 update! - blueraider0 at gmail.com   (Jan 19, 2010, 3:09 pm)
So the deadline has passed and all the orders are in on time.  I also got this fancy new device called a printer, which means I can have a physical map, which means adjudicating won't take as forever.  But I have to head off to work now, so expect the new map later tonight.
--
"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."

Just as a matter of housekeeping regarding the votes, please send in votes for each proposal. It sounded like some of you wanted me to have a perpetual vote for you, but it's really hard for me to keep track of those from one season to the next. Thanks. The orders:

France:

Turkey:

Next Deadline:
Spring 1908 moves and EOG votes due Monday, January 25, noon CST. If I have orders from everyone at any point, I will give a 24 hours notice for adjudication.

Stop the press, we have a
complete set of moves!!!

Somewhat disappointingly, nothing dramatic happens
across Europe...Italy forces her way into the Ionian Sea,
and withdraws from Tyrolia.  Turkey's fleets set
sail into the Med, whilst she rebuffs Russian attempts to
take Sevastopol.  In the west, England finds herself
with a French fleet in the Irish Sea, and sends one of her
fleets north.

We also have a message:

MESSAGE STARTS
Alert!  An alarming message from a secrt underground
bunker.  Turn on your radios, pick up a newspaper,
invent the television, this message is of vital interest to
your nation.  Yes, even yours, *undecipherable
scramble* you noisy brute!  It is has come to our
attention that the Italian has stuck his fingers where they
don't belong, like a boy in a *undecipherable scramble*
store.  We see it prudent to warn all nations, from the
Atlantic to the *undecipherable scramble,* of his
treachery.  This grand alliance against Turkey is just
a distraction.  And we have evidence, intercepted
transmissions.  This one is dated last fall: *extended
undecipherable scramble* and that's just a taste of what
we will bring to bear on the swine, once that league of
nations is formed.

In less populist news, the western three-sided polygon is
*undecipherable scramble* and there is no need for outside
interference.  The German NMR was due to early
bombings from the French and English, and even the Kaiser
was *undechipherable scramble* his successor has taken
office.  He's still *undecipherable scramble*
working out his plans for the future,  but there are
reports that the * extended undecipherable scramble* but
we'll see once the fall passes what the alliances are
truly like.  In England, *extended undecipherable
scramble*.  There is a snake in the grass, lying in
wait.

So thank you all for tuning in to *undecpherable scramble*
official radio station of *undecipherable scramble* which
serves the *undecipherable scramble* people in the most
*undecipherable scramble* way....

Oh, what tangled *undecipherable scramble* we weave

Guys,
I have all the winter adjustments in early, so I plan to adjudicate tomorrow after work (around 3-ish, give or take.) I just wanted you all to have a heads-up in case you have the last-minute desire to change your build/disband.
