DC270: Spring 1903 Retreats (Delay) - chaosonejoe   (Sep 30, 2009, 10:25 am)
Hey, that's not fair to me!

Wink

But I have no objections at this point.

All,

My apologies for going way over the deadline before giving you all an update.

However, I have not received retreat orders from either Tim or Samuel. If I were to proceed with the Adjudication, England and France would be left extremely vulnerable with the removal of those three units and skewing the end results unfairly. Therefore, I am more inclined to assume the positions have been abandoned and search for replacement players than to proceed with an Adjudication.

The game will continue once I have found replacement players for England and France.

Thanks,
Darryl (GM)

DC252 Persia EOGS - psychosis1973   (Sep 30, 2009, 8:56 am)
From a Persian perspective:

My opening thoughts on being allocated Persia was that I had a decent position, but I'd need to work with one of Greece or Egypt to get some decent growth. Egypt was more talkative, so Egypt and I allied fairly early in the game which allowed me to run to the north and make advances there. This wasn't without some nervousness on my part - Garry and I had been in a similar position in an Aegean game, with me getting stabbed and eliminated fairly early.

I worked with Egypt for most of the early and middle parts of the game, gradually beating Greece down...Egypt's growth stalled somewhat after a couple of years, as Carthage put pressure on him, but he somehow managed to convince Carthage that Rome was his best target. However, around about this point, thoughts of a solo entered my head due to my good defensive position and (marginal) supply centre lead. I agonised for several turns, and eventually chose to stab Egypt in year 6, grabbing Athens and Sparta off him and moving on Jerusalem.

I thought I could solo at this point, as I figured that Rome and Carthage putting aside their differences was unlikely, and I thought I'd have an outside change of a solo even if they somehow worked together - the south and centre of the board was secure, and I was making gains in the north - the question was how quickly I could make those gains.

As it turned out, Carthage and Rome quickly started working together (and well played to both for sorting that out quickly!), scuppering my chances - I got to 17, but that proved unsustainable - and there was a couple of nervous moments when I realised that Carthage and Rome could take Sarmatia/Dacia if I wasn't careful, which would expose my undefended Chersonesus/Sinope area. I managed to shore up my defences with a couple of convoys to Macedonia. I figured a two way draw would be fraught with danger (the temptation on both sides would be to grab that extra centre for a solo) so realistically a three way draw was the best I could hope for, so I proposed that, and it was voted through.

Great variant, as you need to balance armies and fleets effectively to get a good position, and I like the fact that there's only 5 powers on the board.

Couple of questions for other players:
- Did any of you think a solo for me was a likelihood at any point?
- To Egypt - did you see the stab coming?
- Carthage/Rome - did you settle your differences quickly when you realised the risk of me soloing?

As always, thanks to the other players and the GM for running the game so smoothly!

A relatively short and sweet game at only 166
days, dc252 is called a 3-way Draw between Carthage, Persia,
and Rome.  Egypt eeks out a Survival, and Greece
didn't quite make it to the Middle Ages.  This is
one of my favorite variants, and has now been played 6 times
with Carthage and Persia still retaining the
highest overall performaces following this
game.

End-Game-Statements are appreciated from all so
send those in while the game is fresh on your mind.
Thanks are due to the players for making this an easy one to
GM, as there was rarely a time that I was tracking anyone
down for orders.

See you next
game,

DC266 Winter 1905 Results - MattTheLesser   (Sep 30, 2009, 12:15 am)
First, Russia retreats A Warsaw - Moscow. Then, I never received a
disband from Austria, so his A Galicia is auto-disbanded following the
guidelines in my house rules (taken directly from the DC house rules).
And elsewhere Germany build A Munich, Italy builds A Rome, and Turkey
builds A Constantinople.

The next deadline will be for Spring 1906, and that will occur this
coming Monday, October 5, at 9 pm eastern.

Also, note that, by my house rules (which will soon change with respect
to this rule but for now is still the case), as it is now the 6th year
of play I will begin accepting end of game proposals should any player
wish to put one forward. All the details are in the house rules but
feel free to ask me any questions.

Matt

Everyone finds a neutral center to claim as their own
Turkey extends their territorial waters to claim the Black Sea
Russia, France, Germany, and England find TWO new colonies
Austria gets denied a Greek outpost while the Italian/Austrian standoff at the head of the Adriatic continues

All,
Pretty straight-forward turn. No retreats were needed this round. Thus we will move directly to the Winter turn where we need some builds:

Austria - 1
England - 2
France - 2
Germany - 2
Italy - 1
Russia - 2
Turkey - 1

Let's set the deadline for Winter at Thursday the 24th at 6pm CST.

We will follow that up with a deadline for Spring 02 of October 1st [Thursday] at 6pm.

DC261 - Autumn 1905 Results : UPDATE - aramis604   (Sep 29, 2009, 8:28 pm)
I wanted to issue a correction to everyone regarding the retreat orders for 1905. David did submit his retreat and I forgot to flag it. Seeing that with the Winter orders for 1905 will leave Russia without any supply centers I will not be sending out an amended map.

I would like to thank David again for his participation in DC261. David, you put up a great game and I'm sorry to see you go. Please know that you're welcome in any future games that I run.

DC267 Summer 2013 Results - MattTheLesser   (Sep 29, 2009, 11:40 am)
Our two two-center powers are now both one-center powers: the USA loses
both its centers from last year but manages to survive by seizing
control of the oil harvesting plants in the Chukchi Sea, and the Norway
holds onto its oil reserves in the Barents Sea after the Danes vacate it
in favor of Tromso. In other news Russia doesn't grow for the first
time in a while, but Canada manages to up his center count to 5 by
reclaiming Yellowknife.

There are no retreats, so we move directly to Summer 2013 adjustments,
which will be due this Thursday, October 1st, at 9 pm eastern.
Adjustments due are listed below the adjudication, and, as always, I
will adjudicate as soon as I have orders from all required parties.

Also, we have a proposal for Russia and Denmark to share in a draw. By
my house rules the votes are not due until the deadline for the next
movement season, which will most likely be this coming Monday, October
5, but if everybody sends their votes before then I will post the
results immediately. Remember that the proposal will require an
affirmative vote from all 5 players to pass.

As we are in no court, I am not going to plead a case, nor am i going to go further in my call to arms. We each have a version of the story, but Florence was always out for blood when Milan was trying to work for peace and stability (not that I am noble in nature, but the status quo work perfectly for me at the time).

My argument is simple, Milan is not ruled by a shining prince of moral and principles, and apart for His Holiness, I have strong doubts any amonst us would be able to claim so. We are but a pack of starving wolves fighting for SCs, using all the tricks in the books to achieve our objectives.
Oh, but my moral is so low that do not even care if I have been blighted. I am willing to forgive, I am willing to make alliances, willing to do anything if it means no single player gets ahead of the game. Balance of power is my paradigm.

A little laziness from our friend in Milan?

I'm in danger of sliding down a slippery slope here, and wish not to defend my actions, but the point with our friend Nick is simply this:

Who among us would acquiesce to a Non-Agression Pact, if the return on the investment was "you can have the home centers of France"

Very strange diplomacy there.

Nick is quite exhuberent, and I can understand that, but as I explained to him, deals are made on specifics, not in generalities. Less strange is that Nick opened up a dialogue between two of his neighbors, who readily decided that having a loose cannon overfocused on generalities and unwilling to negotiate as an ally was not a suitable arrangement.

Regards,
Joe

 Mr Wolf,

My orders will come in due time, however would it be possible for you to circulate the following press in the name of Milan to all player?

Gentlemen,

As we have recently seen. The evil rulers of Florence and Venice have already committed blasphemy by declare war against God. Now they betrayed Milan after a pact of non agression was agreed between us. These two powers prove that there is nothing holy, nothing safe from their evil grasp.

I was surprised but did admire the well coordinated move against me. I understand completely the drive to prevent Milan from growing too strong in the north and what was probably perceived through the proposed pact to lead to me directing what should happen in the centre.
For all the brilliantly executed move, and considering that I directly fed Florence with information about my moves, I do perceive two cracks in the stone.
1) If you had hoped to gain credibility in the begining of the game, you no longer can, as players fear those who cannot hold to a pact. Not that it is expected to be binding, but guys you barely lasted 1 year before plotting against one of your allies. Even for Realpolitik this is considered cold! lol
2) As in Physics, "nothing is gained, nothing is lost, all is transformed". What served as justification to come at blows with Milan, namlely Balance of Power, has now completely shifted. The potential that I was glancing at, is now in the hands of Florence. Milan is no longer the threat, Florence is.

Now rest assured I hold no grudges, to the contrary I applaud the skill demonstrated. Now I can only hope to regain what's mine... and I'm not going to ask 'who is with me'... for we are all alone, but rather appeal to everyone's sens of balance. For if one player shines to brightly, he risks blinding all others.

DC-272 Milan's call to arms - chaosonejoe   (Sep 28, 2009, 9:27 pm)
Why does everyone continue to quote the FLORENTINE????

I don't think I'm missing the point.

I fell behind on this so as soon as I receive the winter adjustments I'll put those through, I think there is only one missing despite the delay.

Also, I forgot to mention that we must say good bye to Russia. Thank you so much Nathan for playing and I hope that we can see you again in another one.

Adjustments:

Austria: Supp 6 Unit 5 Build 1
England: Supp 4 Unit 5 Remove 1

Germany: Supp 0 Unit 0 Build 0
Italy: Supp 0 Unit 0 Build 0
Russia: Supp 0 Unit 2 Remove 2
Turkey: Supp 7 Unit 6 Build 1

I'll plan to do these tomorrow by 2:00 PM but, like I say, if I receive the last one today I'll put them through early.
