DC-239 Spring 1910 Adjudication - dipknight   (Aug 31, 2009, 6:04 pm)
Wolf,

I would be supportive of giving Packrat Germany and putting England in Civil Disorder if that would be helpful.  And, allowing Germany to retreat Kiel, whether or not Packrat is given Germany.

Best,
    Darryl (Austria)

Folks,
I'm sorry to say that Thomas has NMRed again. This means I'm going to put the game up for a replacement Germany. Sorry, Thomas, but I tried to give you a reminder.
I got one no vote and one fail-to-vote, which counts as a no (on top of the NMR vote), so the AI draw fails. We will play on (once I find that replacement.)
Two disbands this season, one due to a lack of retreat options, and one due to Germany's NMR. We'll be able to roll into fall once a replacement joins us.

Just a thought - since you are getting a replacement why not let him/her
decide what to do with the army in Kiel? It can retreat to DEN. One
thing I've noticed with RP is that if you don't enter moves for a country
RP automatically disbands dislodged units. And since Germany isn't CD'd
then the new German player should be allowed to retreat the unit.

Wolf,

I would be supportive of giving Packrat Germany and putting England in Civil Disorder if that would be helpful.  And, allowing Germany to retreat Kiel, whether or not Packrat is given Germany.

Best,

Folks,
I'm sorry to say that Thomas has NMRed again.

Folks,
Packrat makes a very good point (and I don't mean the one on the top of his head.) I had been thinking about this myself, and will do so once we find a replacement. Jason K has already informed me that we will have a replacement this week, one way or another.

I wanted to let everyone know that the internet where I live is out of commision with no timeline for when it will be back in working order again.  I can still access my email account at the library (which is where I am now) but I won't be able to check it as often.  Just thought I should give you all a heads up since I'll likely be taking longer to respond to your messages.  I'll still be sending in prelims and I'll try to check my email couple hour before any deadlines.

"Not now, I've got to feed my llama!"

We've got a lineup here with some of the best in the hobby - including some new hopefuls, some dc regulars, some old-school vets, and some dinosaurs that have been around forever.

This game will follow in my typical 4-season Diplomacy fashion, that is with autumn retreats and winter builds combined into one season to cut back on the minor turns.  You can always submit your build orders conditional upon the autumn retreat ordrers, if that affects what you would build.  See my house rules online for further info.  Actually, you should read them even if further info isn't really your bag of chips, or even if you dont care for info much at all.  No, even if it would make you grossly ill, you should still read the house rules.  They're that good.  Trust me.

For those of you got on the wrong train, you have showed up for South American Supremacy - As the train has now left the station, this is where you're going whether you like it or not - but how could you not?  With a variant created by the legendary Ben Hester, you would have the wisdom of a llama to not want to play in this one.

So - without delaying this any further than I already have, let's get a confirmation from all 8 players, including if you like a preference list of countries.  Even if you dont have a preference, you should still reply to me to confirm you're interested, and indicate no preference.

With this crowd, I'm not anticipating we'll have any long-term issues with NMRs.  I'll be running this game in my usual way, that is with processing NMR's as they fall.

Enjoy!
-mike

NNIGTFML - Officia Maps - Kenshi777   (Aug 31, 2009, 11:09 am)
Just to clarify, Mike is running the game, and anything he says goes.  If by some instance of stupidity on my part I inadvertently contradict him, as the GM, whatever Mike says is correct and I will promptly shut up.  I am only here to assist as requested with the variant, and as a grateful observer.

So - it sounds like I have old info posted on the DipWiki by accident...I'll have to address that.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Subject: NNIGTFML - Officia Maps

Guys pls ignore the little man behind the curtain, as the moves indicated have nothing to do w the map we are actually playing.  The version we are playing is the version that is on the diplomaticcorp site.  It is in the attached maps.  The dipwiki version has two different maps, neither of which is the current map.  One of them differs around Con-Prn, the other differs around the Pacific Ocean .  But use what is posted here, and the RP file from the website.  Con is not adjacent to Prn in this version.  I’m sure the wiki will get updated when he gets around to it.

DC 260: S1905 - AceRimmer   (Aug 31, 2009, 8:19 am)
Here's one quirk about diplomacy... if you have a whole chain of orders, and the very front order doesn't succeed, neither do all the rest. So, hypothetically, if you support yourself into Kazakhstan, but the defense there is supported, it MAY mean (five moves down the chain) that the Indian fleet in Sri Lanka does not occupy the Arabian Sea. Less dramatically, a small move like A War-Liv can leave Western Siberia shivering in a standstill.

The ongoing partition of Japan seems likely to provide another center to the SIN alliance, as Beijing and Korea are occupied.

There are two retreats and a RealPolitik correction. I need a retreat from Japan. Siberia *may* submit a retreat, but as there is only one option, I only need an order if you intend to retreat OTB. There is a definite error in the AsiaIV.map file, which places Hokkaido adjacent to Bering Sea but not to Honshu. So, if you are duplicating adjudications at home, your RealPolitik will misadjudicate the Japanese F Hok S F Yel-Hon. Therefore, let me be clear: Hokkaido IS adjacent to Honshu. It CAN support F Yel-Hon. Hokkaido IS NOT adjacent to Barents. [Note: you can edit the AsiaIV.map file using Notepad... the format is pretty self-explanatory; just make sure to add an adjacency to Honshu, remove an adjacency from Bering, and change the adjacency in Hokkaido].

Retreats:
Siberian F Honshu to Sea of Okhotsk (unless OTB is requested)
Japanese F East China Sea may retreat to Sea of Okhotsk or Yellow Sea or OTB

The retreats are due tomorrow. F1905 will be on Friday, just before the Labor Day weekend. I will be gone from Sat-Tues, just so you know.

What a loser I am. Here are the long waited results. You guys have been a fantastic bunch and it's too bad you're seeing the worse of my procrastination habits.

One player has requested a DIAS due to the slow pace of the game. If you're willing to believe that I sincerely do want to be facilitating a better game than lets play, but if you'd like to call this one done and move on I would completely understand.

In other news. It's been a fantastic game, and it is just getting better:

DCI 09 - GameStart! - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 30, 2009, 10:47 pm)
Greetings, and welcome to the two-hundred and seventy-fourth game of Diplomaticcorp Diplomacy - The DC Invitational! This game shall henceforth be titled “It doesn’t get any cozier than this!” For our game will be sporting 11 players, on a relatively standard map. Crowded? I’d say so! With not a single neutral center on the board, the opening rounds should be drastically different from most games.

The DCI was meant to be a game that will pull together the best of the best, the young and the old, the tall and the small… And this lineup will certainly do just that:

2008 DCI champion - Dan Dzicowicz, playing Austria, ddz999cat23(at)yahoo.com (ddz999cat23(at)yahoo.com)
2009 WB champion - Garry Bledsoe, playing England, kielmarch(at)hotmail.com (kielmarch(at)hotmail.com)
Top Provisional rated - Frank Martin, playing the Lowlands, frankmartin(at)surewest.net (frankmartin(at)surewest.net)
Top Regular rated - Nigel Phillips, playing Russia, nephilli99(at)hotmail.com (nephilli99(at)hotmail.com)
Top Companion Knight - Mikael Johannson, playing Italy, m_don_j(at)hotmail.com (m_don_j(at)hotmail.com)
Top Light Brigade - Jorge Saralegui, playing Norway, jmsaralegui(at)gmail.com (jmsaralegui(at)gmail.com)
Best Survivor - Joe Hacket, playing France, jhack16(at)gmail.com (jhack16(at)gmail.com)
Best Solo Victory - Matt Kremer, playing Spain, matthew.kremer(at)yale.edu (matthew.kremer(at)yale.edu)
Most Promising GM - Adam Martin-Schwarze, playing Turkey, smegdwarf(at)yahoo.com (smegdwarf(at)yahoo.com)
Moderator Pick - Drew Ott, playing the Balkans, drew3739o(at)yahoo.com (drew3739o(at)yahoo.com)
Moderator Pick - Max Victory, playing Germany, maxatrest(at)yahoo.co.uk (maxatrest(at)yahoo.co.uk)

This looks like a great group. The selection criteria was revised a bit this year to create a bit more diversity among the DCI invites. There are now categories to honor some of the newer features of the site like Mikael of the Companion Knights and Jorge of the Light Brigade, as well some unique accomplishments like Joe playing his first 10 games without a single elimination, or Adam running some outstanding games including a marathon WB game as a new GM. In addition we’ve added some Moderator Picks for a bit of a wildcard that brings Drew and Max into the fray, and the best solo without a doubt goes to Matt for beating 34 opponents in his WWIV win. Then of course we have the DCI fundamentals – last year’s champion Dan, the 2009 Winter Blitz winner Garry, and the top rated established and provisional players - which brings Nigel for his dominance over the years in speed play and Frank for his win against some great opposition in A&E.

That rounds out our group!

Attached, you’ll find the Crowded map. Things are going to get rough -fast- in this one so I can’t wait to see where things go. But with a US holiday coming up next Monday, we’re going to allow just a bit of extra time here, and set the Spring 01 deadline for: Wednesday 9/9/09, or opening night for ‘9’. If any of you are planning to go see this, be sure you’ve got your moves in ahead of time! 6pm Central / 2300 GMT.

There is also a little matter of prelims - and for the first turn, they’re required so that I know we’re off to a solid start. Whether you plan to change them or not, some set of prelim orders are due to me by this Wed 9/2/09, 6pm Central / 2300 GMT. Then the actual turn is due the following Wednesday 9/9. Press of all sorts is accepted, be sure to turn in any creative submissions with your regular orders.

Here’s to a lively and entertaining game!

Great!

A list of who's who in diplomacy, and because of a huge couple of days of night work, I'm just seeing this game start announcement. For those who have written, my apologies for my silence. that will be rectified shortly.

A bit about myself as an introduction. My name is Frank Martin, and I am a civil engineer (roadway and bridge construction management) in Granite Bay, California (a suburb of Sacramento). I've been playing diplomacy for a very long time (dating myself), and have always considered it the best of all games. I have three children, G15, B8, G5 who keep me very busy, and a lovely wife that keeps me grounded. Aside from taking my children to various athletic events and playing a very little soccer (football) myself, I like to read a good book, and very occasionally get involved in a spirited game of diplomacy.

As for the game, I like to think that I write often, strategize fairly well, and am able to be flexible to the changing environment. If you feel like I'm quiet, it's probably because real life has snuck up on me, as I don't cold shoulder anyone (although if you stab me twice, don't expect long loving responses to any further missives).

I wish the best of luck to all, and hope everybody has a fun experience. Thanks to Michael in advance for running this game.

Hi Folks,

Unfortunately, the deadline is passed and I have no orders from Turkey.  Although he's already used his 24h grace period, I don't think it's really worth adjudicating without him.

As such, I'm using my discretion to give an extra 24 hours.  This isn't a free pass, though: although Turkey's orders will be adjudicated as normal, he'll still record an NMR.

I hope this sounds fair to all.

Cheers,

Matthew

DC255 Fall 1909 Results - Game Over - Dark Solo! - jkudlick at gmail.com   (Aug 30, 2009, 7:07 pm)
A fun game but an uninspiring map; Unfortunately I was unable to devote as much time to it as I would have liked.

From the outset, a strong alliance with either Dark or Blue was a goal of mine, but Nathan was quicker to respond.  I wanted to bring Red onboard as well with me, but we could never get anything going together.  I stuck with Dark and only once considered otherwise, however, Packrat betrayed my confidence.  At that point I knew I would settle for a Dark solo at worst.

I think the game could have been played to a three way draw had Red decided not to capitulate to Dark, but it's too difficult to say with certainty.  The death of Blue was inevitable in that case and Red would have had to pick between defending against me or Dark.

Either way, congrats to Nathan and a good game from all,

-Jon

First and foremost, thanks to Matt for a well-run game, and to everyone who played for their dedication to keeping the game on track.

On a macro level, I agree that the symmetry of the map may make fo a slightly less interesting game. However, working from positions of exactly equal strength and position, with exactly equal opportunity for growth, tactics and diplomacy, seems to focus the experience on the players and their execution of their respective strategies in these areas.

Without the solid alliance with Jon from the outset, the solo would not have occurred. I may owe much to Blue's well-fought stalemate that contained my ally's growth.

Packrat and I dismembered White quickly, which was the plan, and it seemed we were destined for conflict from that point on, though he made several perusasive attempts to get me to turn on Yellow - once I had given (apparently) just enough for him to turn his attention (and units) to helping Blue, the time came for the stab, which was not devastating but gave me the tactical leverage to push things past the tipping point.

As always, Packrat's defense was well played until he chose to discontinue it. I've thoroughly enjoyed the variant and playing with you all, and am very pleased to have earned my first solo on DC.

So it's not going to come as a surprise to anyone at this point, but I still offer my hearty congratulations to our Dark player Nathan for pulling off the 12 center solo (one more than required!).

I also want to thank all of you for an almost perfect game in terms of submission of orders and the such; we only had a couple graces used and a couple NMR's (Blue in fact suffered one on this final turn), but in general you guys enabled me to keep this game running smoothly.

I'd love to see EOG statements from each of you including your thoughts on both our individual game and the map in general.  Personally I found the map intriguing when I first saw it, which is why I chose to GM this game.  However, as the game progressed I found myself a little bored by the map and its symmetry.  However, it obviously does do its job of eliminating any complaint about unequal starting positions.

Again congrats to Nathan, and I'm sure I'll see you all in future DC games.  You all of course are welcome in any game that I GM; be on the lookout for some sort of gunboat full press game soon!

Ben,
I don't see a Con/Prn adjacency on your official version of the map. It looks like Asu is between them. Clarify?

Since I am going to be using RP and there are all these questions around the
map - how about just sending the dpy file so we can see if we can open it?

Guys pls ignore the little man behind the curtain, as the moves indicated have nothing to do w the map we are actually playing.  The version we are playing is the version that is on the diplomaticcorp site.  It is in the attached maps.  The dipwiki version has two different maps, neither of which is the current map.  One of them differs around Con-Prn, the other differs around the Pacific Ocean .  But use what is posted here, and the RP file from the website.  Con is not adjacent to Prn in this version.  I’m sure the wiki will get updated when he gets around to it.
