DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: Spring 1913 results. Fall 1913... - stevelytton at gmail.com   (Aug 23, 2009, 10:02 pm)
Ah Interesting

I reaad those comments as

"Italy/Germany are not playing for the best position they can achieve but are happy to allow someone else to get a solo by Kingmaking."

At least now I know the calibre of players in this game,

Italy has taken that approach also. Neither one of us is big fish, but we're still here. Deal with it. ;o)

Germany formally welcomes everyone to the game.

Seems I have adequate access to the Internet from my hotel room; so, feel to send me mail.  You all should be receiving mail from me shortly.

Thanks and the best of luck to all (though not too much luck).

Best Regards,
       Darryl (Germany)

Hey guys... it was just pointed out to me that the map I've been using for this game is missing the space "Skaggerak." It's a sea space that borders Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the North Sea. I'll fix that once I get a chance. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused.

I'm afraid you're going to have to explain that comment to my slow Italian self. If you haven't been paying attention, I certainly AM playing for my best possible position, and it seems to me that Germany is in the lead...

for the record i think italy and germany are doing the best the can and both are in a far better position than i am so i'm the last one to cast aspersions on anyone else's ablity in this game and i will heartily and sincerely congratulate whomever wins or is in the draw.

To my mind:

Win = good result
Draw = okay result
Survival while other people draw = Survival while someone else wins = elimination = bad result

It doesn't matter how many centres you've got if you don't get a win or part of the draw, and that's exactly the approach the game rules imply. As it happens I've been going against my principles and voting for the draw recently, but only because I'm trying to pull out of diplomacy at the moment.

regards,
Stephen

Good evening

Well it's back to the pasta and chianti for me - thanks to all of you for helping to make this a competitive but enjoyable game. I'm sure Mark won't mind if I congratulate Mike and Gabriel for having steered their respective nations so skillfully through the ups and downs of Diplomacy life. Am I correct in thinking you both have 16SCs?!

Thanks also to the GM for putting up with us all.

Hope to cross swords with you all again.

With kind regards

Honored Kings of the Dark Ages -

An interesting season - battles rage all over the map, yet not a single retreat needed.  The big winners this year are the Danes, who pick up an impressive *three* SCs, courtesy of their stab of the Anglo-Saxons and deep strike into Swedish territory.  Elsewhere, the Gaels suffer the loss of Munster to the Scots, who manage to hold their plunder with Anglo-Saxon aid.  The Gaels and Scots fight an epic but inconclusive battle in Dal Riada, while Norse fleets appear off Scottish shores.  The Bretons press far behind Anglo-Saxon lines, but are still faced with a disband this winter.
We'll have a slightly abnormal deadline for Winter 827 on Tuesday 25 August 2009, 1700 EDT - because I'm taking a small vacation next week from Wed - Sun.  Then we'll have a long spring - first Thursday in September will be the Spring 828 deadline.  Winter adjustments are at the bottom of this page.

DC 260: Reinstatement - AceRimmer   (Aug 22, 2009, 11:52 am)
I have received contact -- and orders -- from Jon Kudlick. So, according to my pronouncement from yesterday... I am reinstating him. Obviously, Jon gets a short-ish kind of tether for awhile. I'm sure he will do the prudent thing and *submit prelims* (prudent not just for him but for everybody).

I will not adjudicate until Monday, because... well, I don't have the Asian variant saved to my home computer. Just my work one. I should fix that...

Regardless, we're back to being five happy campers in a lifeboat built for fewer than that number. Somebody needs to get kicked out.

I have reset the game to 'Active' status on the website (from 'Recruiting'Wink, and I need to check with Mike Sims on how to un-abandon the Persian position. For the moment, the site is not letting me do that, and maybe I'm asking it to do something it was designed not to do. We'll figure it out. But for the players, all you need to know is that Persia has been rediscovered, and we're set to get going again on Monday.

Thanks for your patience,

Adam

DC269 - Retreats - Viper   (Aug 22, 2009, 10:36 am)
Hey guys... so, I just realized that this is the first case where a retreat is necessary and I haven't really explained how retreats generally work. So here goes:

When I prepare the map, and there are retreats necessary, I will do one of two things:

1) If the unit has more than one place it can go, I will simply take the unit off the board while the player needing to retreat makes his choice.

2) If there is only one place for the unit to go, I will move the unit there, but the player in charge of that unit still needs to confirm that they want to retreat (because off the board is an option).

So, if, during the course of the game, you need to retreat, please do so. If no retreat is received, the assumption is off the board (so you will lose that unit).

Winter Blitz 09 - FINALS! - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 22, 2009, 12:20 am)
Heya Blitzers,
Congrats are in order for this year’s winners!

Winning the overall tournament with back to back solos and a perfect 43.6 score is Garry Bledsoe! An old-timer in the club, active since dc96 – Garry swept this tournament with his first two solos ever, making it look easy along the way. No easy task, Garry pulled this off despite some fierce opposition from dc regulars in both games.

Taking the “Top Round 1” score is no surprise - Dan Dzikowicz won the 2008 DC Invitational, and this year he pulled off the Top Round 1 position with a solo in dc236.

Then we have in the “Top Round 2” spot, with none other than Nigel Phillips, champion of the WB08! Win it one year and placing high the next, there is no question this format suits Nigel just fine.

**************************************************

Folks, this year has brought a lot of changes to dc - the WB started way back in January, and ran clear into August – longer than last year, due mainly to the marathon game dc247, GM’d flawlessly by Adam, a relatively new GM. Adam’s already run games like Seismic and Asian Diplomacy, so we can’t wait to see what he’ll grace our pages with next.

Joining Adam as a GM and fellow newbie is Sam Buck, with his own pair of outstanding games from a new GM. Currently offering a game of Wings – if you want to try something a little different, be sure to check out the open games page!

Along with Adam and Sam, we welcomed a third new GM Rachael, making her first game at dc a WB game – what other way to get your feet wet? Trust me folks you don’t know what it’s like to GM a blitz game until you try it, and you realize just how much effort it takes to pull off the 4 deadlines a week – a task worthy of the most seasoned GM’s, and these three pulled it off like pros. Thank you all!

Rounding out our GM team were the dc vets Christine, Cory, and Garry… no question if you get into one of their games it’s always a treat… All 3 provided a stable and reliable baseline upon which we could form a tournament – your efforts are appreciated!

This tournament could not succeed without the committed efforts of these 6 GM’s. My hat is off to all of them.

**************************************************

There are a few matters of a couple prizes remaining – “Best Stab”, and “Best Press”!

What I’d like to do is open the lines for submissions on both. Note the top 3 winners above cannot win the smaller prizes! But if you’d like to submit ideas, send them to me. Max 1 submission for each prize from each player. Please include a REASON with your submission. Up to 50 words, which will be posted in a voting format for everyone to vote on. Let’s have any submissions by the end of August (about 10 days) and then we’ll vote in the first week of September for the final $25 gift certificates to thoughthammer.com. Anyone who loves board games will know this is one of the best spots on the web to get games so it’s definitely a prize to be coveted.

This player-voted prize concept is new this year so let’s make it successful - Send your ideas to me!

**************************************************

On a more personal note, I’d like to thank my friend Former Trout for his efforts on this year’s Blitz. Trout carried most of this tournament squarely on his shoulders – training our new GMs, updating game pages, tracking the games, and making sure everything ran like clockwork – a full-time job in itself! Trout is also responsible for spearheading the WB concept, and making it all come together! It could not have happened without you, thank you.

Thanks are in order to our full team of volunteers – Christine, Cory, Garry, Rachael, Adam, Sam, Trout, and of course you, the players. Remember dc operates solely based on this volunteer support from our community. If you’d like to become a GM or take a more active role in some way, feel free to speak up and ask any questions. We’ll send out a tourney questionnaire with the polls for voting on the above two prizes, and your input will be appreciated on what we can improve for next year’s Blitz. Are you excited yet? If you’d like to become a part of next year’s ops team please inquire within.

Enjoy,
-mike

DC253 S07 ANOTHER TUN OF PROGRESS FOR T - vegas_iwish   (Aug 21, 2009, 9:31 pm)
USSR is already now at a status where no waiting will occur if is the sole missing player. Running turns with 2 mising can make the game a farce which makes me tentative about ruining a game others have made a real effort at.

Can we impose a stricter rule about this?
Granted NMRs are a pain, I feel after ample warning (say,
the e-mail sent out on Monday) and a 24 hour grace period,
waiting penalizes the other players.  It also causes
confusion with correspondence, as the "diplomacy
phase" is extended for an indefinate and somewhat
unpredictable amount of time....

DC266 Fall 1903 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 21, 2009, 6:51 pm)
So, just like that, we have a new England! Please welcome Aidan
Slattery (AiSlattery(at)aol.com) as the new commander of the dark blue
units. To give Aidan time to get acquainted with you all the next few
deadlines (through the Spring) are going to be a bit longer; however, as
always, should I received final orders from everyone before the deadline
I will adjudicate. First up will be Autumn 1903 retreats and Winter
1903 adjustments, which will be due together next Thursday, August 27,
at 9 pm eastern. For this autumn/winter only I am not going to treat
retreats and adjustments as final unless they are explicitly marked as
such because I want to make sure Aidan has ample opportunity to get up
to speed.

Matt Kremer wrote:

Hey guys,

Adam (England) has requested to be removed from the game due to my
grace period policy, with which he has decided he does not agree
despite the fact that it has been in my house rules since day one.
Thus I am forced to pause the game to search for a replacement; I do
not want to even set the retreat deadline because I want the
replacement player to be able to order England's two possible retreats
since his winter situation is so highly dependent on them. The DC
Light Brigade is pretty good about filling holes, even in situations
like this that might be less than desirable, so sit tight and we'll
resume the game as soon as possible.

submitted orders before the extended deadline and thus avoids an NMR;
the further delay is my fault as I am on vacation and could not
access the internet yesterday.

As for the game itself there are some very interesting happenings to
report all over the board. England has a rough season in north,
losing both Norway and St. Petersburg, although he does regain
Liverpool from France. Germany continues to roll, picking up Brest
in addition to Norway, and he seems to have made a new friend in the
Austrian, whom he helps take Venice.

There are three retreats:
English F Nwy can retreat to Bar, Nwg, or OTB.
English F StP(nc) can retreat to Bar, or OTB.
Italian A Ven can retreat to Apu, Rom, Tus, or OTB.

These retreats and the Winter 1903 adjustments will be due together

Heya guys,

The fashion in Paris these days is all coming out of Ruhr, as the French army reclaims the contested space from the Germans.  Meanwhile, Austrian sailors party in Constantinople, but that French fleet in the Black Sea might put a damper on things when it jumps out of the cake...

There was just one retreat needed from Germany in Ruhr - but with only Kiel as an option other than OTB I took the liberty.  (Josh, just let me know if OTB is actually preferred.)  With the Spring under our belts, we'll set the deadline for Fall 1910 orders for Thursday, August 27th (11:59 PM GMT).

Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your prefs in nice and early. We're ready to go now - assignments and deadline are below, and a reference map of starting positions is attached. If anyone would like a copy of the RealPolitik variant folder, I would be perfectly happy to zip it up and shoot it out. Just let me know.
Please remember that this is a play-balance test. I don't know if this map will be completely eight-player balanced in the absence of all the special rules (money, garrisons, natural disasters, etc.) that are part of the box set game. As such, if you find yourself in a position that seems imbalanced, let me know. I'll take notes and make that part of my overall player assessment (which I'll solicit for again once the game is over.)
Without further ado, let's get this game rolling!

Austria: Aidan Slattery <AiSlattery(at)aol.com>
France: Mark Utterbach <MDemagogue(at)gmail.com>

DC 260: What's up - AceRimmer   (Aug 21, 2009, 2:11 pm)
The deadline is now over 3 days overdue, and I do not have Persian orders. I did, however, hear from Jon on Tuesday or Wednesday. He informed me of things being chaotic and that he would have orders to me in half an hour. I have not heard from Jon since.

So, following my house rules, I am declaring Persia abandoned and will post the need for a replacement on the diplomaticcorp site.

Given the brief contact from Jon, I will re-accept him (as his own replacement, I suppose), provided he offers sufficient reason justifying that he will be reliable in future turns (really, an earnest, "I'll do better" should be enough).

Or, if somebody else takes over Persia first... they will become the new Shah. If there is a replacement player, I will give the new Persian a full week to infiltrate your alliances and make a diplomatic nest whence Persia can grow and prosper and hopefully even solo.

I appreciate your patience.

But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."

DC266 Fall 1903 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 21, 2009, 12:32 pm)
Hey guys,

Adam (England) has requested to be removed from the game due to my grace
period policy, with which he has decided he does not agree despite the
fact that it has been in my house rules since day one. Thus I am forced
to pause the game to search for a replacement; I do not want to even set
the retreat deadline because I want the replacement player to be able to
order England's two possible retreats since his winter situation is so
highly dependent on them. The DC Light Brigade is pretty good about
filling holes, even in situations like this that might be less than
desirable, so sit tight and we'll resume the game as soon as possible.

The late player was France, so his grace is now used, but he submitted
orders before the extended deadline and thus avoids an NMR; the
further delay is my fault as I am on vacation and could not access the
internet yesterday.

As for the game itself there are some very interesting happenings to
report all over the board. England has a rough season in north,
losing both Norway and St. Petersburg, although he does regain
Liverpool from France. Germany continues to roll, picking up Brest in
addition to Norway, and he seems to have made a new friend in the
Austrian, whom he helps take Venice.

There are three retreats:
English F Nwy can retreat to Bar, Nwg, or OTB.
English F StP(nc) can retreat to Bar, or OTB.
Italian A Ven can retreat to Apu, Rom, Tus, or OTB.

These retreats and the Winter 1903 adjustments will be due together
this coming Monday, August 24, at 9 pm eastern. Adjustments due are
listed below the adjudication. As usual I will adjudicate early as
soon as I have received orders from all necessary powers.
