DC-224 Slaughter At StoryTime - Early Winter 09 -... - former.trout   (Aug 21, 2009, 10:09 am)
Heya folks,

Just for good measure, the powers that be threw a Tornado at me as I flew out of Toronto last night.  What a summer - thank you all SO MUCH for your patience and bearing with me.  Cross my fingers, I'm back in Edmonton with a good solid high-speed connection once more.  (Yay!)

Attached you'll find the corrected Fall 09 map as well as the Early Winter 09 retreats.  The faeries disband their army in the Underworld, while the Undead put their new tan to good work in All Saints Bay.

I have most Winter adjustments already, but there are a few out there that were awaiting the retreats.  (My bad, sorry.)  Deadline for Winter 09 will be set for Monday, Aug 24th (11:59 PM GMT).

Also, I will get the revised player list out tonight.  I'll also be cleaning up the email distribution list - so if there are any of you folks out there who are no longer involved in the game but still want to receive he results then please drop me a line ASAP.

Cheers - and remember - everybody poops.

DC230 Lost Kings - Missed Deadlines - former.trout   (Aug 21, 2009, 9:32 am)
Hey guys,

As I kindof expected, my change to a morning deadline must have thrown one or more of you, because there are some missing orders.  I've notified the players I need them from seperately, and with this crew I fully expect a very quick response.  Adjudication should be out by this evening.

Cheers,

DC250 My Army Is Bigger - Spring 1907 - Tales Of T... - former.trout   (Aug 21, 2009, 9:24 am)
Heya folks,

Been quite a tumultous summer for me connection-wise, for which I am eternally grateful for your forebearance.  The latest twitch happened last Monday when the dial-up provider cut our service four days early...  Then to top it all off, a tornado hits Toronto as I fly out of there last night.  Yikes.

In any case, I'm happily back home and soaking up all the high-speed glory that I can.  Thanks for hanging in there the last several weeks.  =)

But enough talking about me...  Honestly.  Game-wise, there is more movement from Germany in the west, though the black forces engage in supporting actions in the east.  And a slight miscue from Turkey results in Austria gaining some Albanian breathing room.  (Sorry Thor, I only adjudicate the orders as they are received - and of course had no chance to ask for clarification this week...)

No retreats result from the turn, and we stumble into Fall 1907.  I'll set a firm deadline for Wednesday, August 26th (11:59 PM GMT).  Though I'll try to get several reminders out this week before the turn.

Cheers everyone!

There's No Place Like Home Trout

DC266 Fall 1903 Results - SensFan33   (Aug 21, 2009, 7:08 am)
Hi Adam,
I know I'm not the GM here, but since he's on holiday, and hasn't had access regularily, so I thought I'd point you to a snippet of his house rules:

3.Graces, NMR's, and Replacements-All players begin the game with one 24 hour grace period, which is activated the first time no moves are received from that player for
a movement season. The grace extendeds the deadline by 24 hours for ALL players.-Graces cannot and will not be used on retreat or adjustment phases. This explains why he did what he did, though I understand if you feel slighted by it, he's just following his own rules. The rest of the house rules can be found at http://diplomaticcorp.com/houserules/unitedfan1389.txt, if you're interested.I hope you stay in the game.William

Matt,
Sorry, but I'm out. Its one thing to lose, but you've given two grace periods to other players and England didn't get one earlier in the game on the critical first build.

That's a little bit ridiculous.

Looks like Germany's got this one wrapped as it is.

On Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 4:27 PM, Matt Kremer <matthew.kremer(at)yale.edu ([email]matthew.kremer(at)yale.edu[/email])> wrote:

The late player was France, so his grace is now used, but he submitted orders before the extended deadline and thus avoids an NMR; the further delay is my fault as I am on vacation and could not access the internet yesterday.

As for the game itself there are some very interesting happenings to report all over the board. England has a rough season in north, losing both Norway and St. Petersburg, although he does regain Liverpool from France. Germany continues to roll, picking up Brest in addition to Norway, and he seems to have made a new friend in the Austrian, whom he helps take Venice.

There are three retreats:
English F Nwy can retreat to Bar, Nwg, or OTB.
English F StP(nc) can retreat to Bar, or OTB.
Italian A Ven can retreat to Apu, Rom, Tus, or OTB.

These retreats and the Winter 1903 adjustments will be due together this coming Monday, August 24, at 9 pm eastern. Adjustments due are listed below the adjudication. As usual I will adjudicate early as soon as I have received orders from all necessary powers.

Can we impose a stricter rule about this?  Granted NMRs are a pain, I feel after ample warning (say, the e-mail sent out on Monday) and a 24 hour grace period, waiting penalizes the other players.  It also causes confusion with correspondence, as the "diplomacy phase" is extended for an indefinate and somewhat unpredictable amount of time....

And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. USSR is already now at a status where no waiting will occur if is the sole missing player. Running turns with 2 mising can make the game a farce which makes me tentative about ruining a game others have made a real effort at.

ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they
were. and sometimes you didn't want to know the end
because how could the end be happy? How could the world go
back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in
the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the
darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun
shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories
that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you
were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I
do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of
chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept
going because they were holding onto something."

DC269 - Spring 1902 - Viper   (Aug 20, 2009, 10:17 pm)
Alright guys... this turn is now done. I would like to stress, once again, the value of preliminary moves. I'm going to give everyone a mulligan on this one. From now on, however, if your moves aren't in by the deadline, I will register an NMR. I may still take your moves, but I'll have to put it into the stats as such.

Now the moves. A very interesting turn, to say the least. Interestingly enough, most of your moves succeeded, with only a few units facing failure. We do have one retreat due, from Austria, but more on that to come.

Thanks to everyone for making your moves clear... they are very easy to understand.

Austria:
A Serbia - Bulgaria (*fails*)
F Greece Supports A Serbia - Bulgaria (*dislodged*)
F Trieste - Adriatic Sea
A Vienna Holds

England:

F North Sea - Helgoland Bight

F Black Sea Supports A Constantinople - Bulgaria
A Galicia Holds
A Warsaw Supports A Galicia

Turkey:
A Bulgaria - Greece
F Aegean Sea Supports A Bulgaria - Greece
A Constantinople - Bulgaria
F Smyrna - Constantinople

Next Deadline:
We need a retreat from Austria's F Greece, which may retreat to Albania or OTB (off the board... he may choose to disband it). That will be due on Saturday, August 22, at noon CDT.

DC255 Winter 1908 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 20, 2009, 9:42 pm)
So apparently I just lost track of this game and completely failed to
notice until today that the deadline passed days ago. If this ever
happens again feel free to shoot me a email to give me a nudge!

Even with the huge time gap Yellow fails to submit a disband, so his F
Cerulean is disbanded due to the auto-disband regulations in the DC
house rules. Blue opts to disband his dislodged A Cerulean and build F
Royal, and Dark builds A Ebony.

The Spring 1909 deadline will be this coming Monday, August 24, at 9 pm
eastern. Again my sincerest apologies for the delay.

DC267 Winter 2011 Results - MattTheLesser   (Aug 20, 2009, 9:25 pm)
First off I apologize for the delay; I am on vacation and was not able
to get internet access yesterday.

An interesting winter all around, as somewhat of a circular supply
center trade occurred; the USA was able to sneak into Magadan, but
Russia took the North Pole from the Norwegians, who in turn took back
Longyearbyen from the Danes, who themselves took Baffin Bay from the
Canadians.

There is one retreat: Russian A Beaufort Sea may retreat to Chukchi
Abyssal Plain, Chukchi Sea, Mendeleyev Ridge, Northwest Passage,
Victoria Island, or OTB. That retreat and the Winter 2011 Adjustments
will be due this coming Monday, August 24, at 9 pm eastern. The
American build must be conditional on the Russian retreat, and, as
always, and I will adjudicate as soon as I have orders from all required
nations. Adjustments due are listed below the adjudication.

Hi Adam,
I know I'm not the GM here, but since he's on holiday, and hasn't had access regularily, so I thought I'd point you to a snippet of his house rules:

3.Graces, NMR's, and Replacements-All players begin the game with one 24 hour grace period, which is activated the first time no moves are received from that player for
a movement season. The grace extendeds the deadline by 24 hours for ALL players.-Graces cannot and will not be used on retreat or adjustment phases. This explains why he did what he did, though I understand if you feel slighted by it, he's just following his own rules. The rest of the house rules can be found at http://diplomaticcorp.com/houserules/unitedfan1389.txt, if you're interested.I hope you stay in the game.William

Hey guys,

Adam (England) has requested to be removed from the game due to my grace
period policy, with which he has decided he does not agree despite the
fact that it has been in my house rules since day one. Thus I am forced
to pause the game to search for a replacement; I do not want to even set
the retreat deadline because I want the replacement player to be able to
order England's two possible retreats since his winter situation is so
highly dependent on them. The DC Light Brigade is pretty good about
filling holes, even in situations like this that might be less than
desirable, so sit tight and we'll resume the game as soon as possible.

further delay is my fault as I am on vacation and could not access the

As for the game itself there are some very interesting happenings to
report all over the board. England has a rough season in north,
losing both Norway and St. Petersburg, although he does regain
Liverpool from France. Germany continues to roll, picking up Brest in
addition to Norway, and he seems to have made a new friend in the
Austrian, whom he helps take Venice.

There are three retreats:
English F Nwy can retreat to Bar, Nwg, or OTB.
English F StP(nc) can retreat to Bar, or OTB.
Italian A Ven can retreat to Apu, Rom, Tus, or OTB.

These retreats and the Winter 1903 adjustments will be due together
this coming Monday, August 24, at 9 pm eastern. Adjustments due are
listed below the adjudication. As usual I will adjudicate early as
soon as I have received orders from all necessary powers.

So, just like that, we have a new England! Please welcome Aidan
Slattery (AiSlattery(at)aol.com) as the new commander of the dark blue
units. To give Aidan time to get acquainted with you all the next few
deadlines (through the Spring) are going to be a bit longer; however, as
always, should I received final orders from everyone before the deadline
I will adjudicate. First up will be Autumn 1903 retreats and Winter
1903 adjustments, which will be due together next Thursday, August 27,
at 9 pm eastern. For this autumn/winter only I am not going to treat
retreats and adjustments as final unless they are explicitly marked as
such because I want to make sure Aidan has ample opportunity to get up
to speed.

Dc 225: End Game - Make Love; Not War [a GM's EoG] - Zipholm   (Aug 20, 2009, 10:28 am)
Turkish EoG.

Again, thanks goes to Alan for a well run game, and the rest of you for making this game fun and educational.

Just as England did in the west, I focused primarily on the Eastern part of the board in the first half of the game, but not in the way I had hoped in advance. I sent some introductions to the other countries, and I received some tips and pointers from several of the more experienced players. Thanks, that was both needed and appreciated.

As to alliances etc., I did not get anything substancial. Mails to Austria and Italy went unanswered, but I formed an alliance with Russia. But after the first year, things started to go downhill. The second ruler of Italy forged a lasting alliance with Austria and a NAP with France, which was bad news for me. Also, the Turkish-Russian alliance went downhill fast, as Russia implemented devious but strange strategies, and the Austrian-Italian alliance made great gains at a rapid pace. At this point, the only eastern country which answered my communications were Italy, who remained loyal to Austria, though. As they were doing great, I can't really blame him.

I decided to put all effort into thwarting Italy in the hope of turning him against Austria, leaving an open front to the north. With doom approaching rapidly, an Italian change of power ushered in an period of new hope. Stroz, thanks for saving my a$$. With the help from Italy, the attack on Austria commenced. As both France and Russia were all but exterminated at this point, an alliance between Germany, Italy and Turkey were formed to prevent an English solo and remove the Austrian threat once and for all. This succeeded through intensive diplomacy. Coordinating the moves of three countries is not simple (with busy real lives going on), and we had some hectic last minute discussions.

As Alan pointed out, a stab against Italy was tempting. But Englands position was too strong, and I was not going to hand him the solo.

In conclusion, I think the draw was a fair result. England was the largest power, but the rest of us were at that point coordinated enough to hold the line. Well done Mark, and to quote Iceman: "Jyri and Stroz, you can be my wingmen anytime" (Or most likely, the other way around) ;oD

Best regards,
Holm

Subject: Dc 225: End Game - Make Love; Not War [a GM's EoG]

Its been 11 years since the continent of Europe was plunged into war, but finally the seven sinners of Europe have become the four sinners and decided to put away their guns and agreed to end the war.

A Four way Draw between Sultan Michael Holm [8 centers], Michael Stroz in Italy [9 centers], Kaiser Jyri Syrja in Germany [3 centers], and Her Majesty the Queen Mark Utterback [14 centers].

I'm sure everyoen would enjoy reading end of game statements from all the different players (past and present). Feel free to group email them to everyone or send them to me and I will forward them along. As for the GM I have just a few words that I would like to relay about the makeup of this game.

First of all I would like to thank Michael Stroz for stepping up and leading italy. He was the third leader to command those pesky Green units and did a magnificent job. I'd also like to thank Rachael Jameson, Santiago Villamayor, and Anthony Stevens for keeping with their declining positions even though the outcome was bleak. Its people like you that I can count on. Thanks!

I have two points to make about the game: First I think Italy did a great job getting a leg up on Mark in what is usually a complete stalemate line. I'm unsure how it would have worked out if the game had continued. Also, I've been waiting for the Turk to stab Italy since Fall 1909! If a stab wasn't coming why was that army parked in Serbia for so long? Turkey did the "right" thing, if he had stabbed I believe Mark would have won the solo and Holm would have lost his share in the draw, but the temptation to improve your position must have been immense.

Lastly I would like to make a shout out to Andy [The White Wolf] who was there to answer my question and coach me through my fist GM experience whenever I needed him.

If any of you are still reading I hope to see you in either the next game I play [South American Supremacy] , or the next game I GM [hopefully a Modern Variant]

Thank you all,
Alan Farrington

Wow, I really did not expect this to end so quickly, although I am rather happy I get a Draw instead of an elimination. Thanks to everyone who played in this. I had a great time. Thanks especially to Chris (Venice), for even after crippling me, letting me survive on one center for as long as I did. Another big thank you too Wolf, who was completely fair but also completely understanding throughout the whole thing. Again, well played by all, and I hope we meet again.
