So here we go, but first... I have been giving some personal reminders to those who are slower than ..... well lets just say slower than me. So I am telling all that I can no longer give those personal reminders for it is slowing me down and I do not want to take the blame any more for the delays. so the 24 hours after my notice and than whatever time it takes me to get to the adjudication... If I have not received any orders by then the NMR that I am than forced to give will have to happen. So that said (and thanks to all who are on time!!!) on with the show....

1648 090623: Winter 1651 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf (Aug 06, 2009, 12:03 pm) |
Hallo zusammen!
So now a third year has passed. All powers are still hanging in there. Indeed, all powers have four or more units. Now who will in this game of musical chairs be first eliminated? Who will survive right until the end? And who do you think will solo (or failing that, end the game with the most SCs)? I'd be eager to receive your preditions and compare those to the final results! I'll let you know whose hunches were right on the money once the game has ended and confer the Johannes Kepler Award (in honour of the famous 17th century scientist and astrologer) to the most clairvoyant!
And of course there shall be a prize, namely a guaranteed spot in my next game and a preferential treatment regarding power preferences! Players and observers are both eligible to win the award, btw.
As for the adjucation, some of those may surprise you. 'And while checking those out, don't miss the colourful press further below.
The next deadline's on 12 August. Thereafter we'll be heading into Charles-on-holiday territory. Since I didn't find a replacement GM, the plan is to just soldier on. I can't guarantee adjucations will immediately follow deadlines and a volunteer would have to supply the map and updated .dpy file. Not ideal, but in my view better than a long delay. So, anyone wants to be Chief Map-making Officer?
Liebe Grüsse,
Charles

From Turkey:
SULTAN ISSUES WARNING AGAINST AUSTRIAN SUPREMACY
CONSTANTINOPLE (Turkey) Winter 1651 - The Sultan issued a caution this
week to most of the Great Eurpoean Powers.
"Emperor Jorge of Austria is using a 'carebear' approach to set this
map up for a triumphant solo victory," stated the Sultan. "He is
making every ruler believe they are his friend while systematically
manipulating the DP and SC situation to his particular advantage. Each
of you think Austria is a great and helpful ally, but you are just
another pawn in his ultimate plan of enjoying a solo and unshared
victory."
The Sultan presented extensive documentation to the press on this
matter, illustrating how Austria:
* Manipulated matters to save England and set up France and Denmark
* Orchestrated Turkish jihad against Spain in such a way that made
Austria appear non-complicit
* Created a quagmire in the north by alternately helping all of
Denmark, Sweden and Poland, while working them against one another
without their realizing he was at the center of it
Austria has taken a dominant position in the Holy Roman Empire,
allowing him to build in ANY of a variety of centers and thus gain a
forward position on any antagonist he chooses to attacks. Since the
1648 variant requires a scant 18 SC's for victory, it will be
unusually quick for him to get the last few supply centers once he
gets up into the double-digits. It would be easy for any of or
multiple players to be fooled into passivity by his seeming generosity
and collaboration, thus missing this critical fact.
"Most chilling of all," continued the Sultan, "is that he is trying to
convince other powers that we, Turkey, are the threat to solo because
we are in a traditionally strong 'corner' position. We want to
publicly state to every player that such a claim is, simply, nonsense.
First, in this unique variant, the Holy Roman Emperor has an
exceptionally good position to win; a well-played middle IS the best
spot in this game. Second, our actions will consistently illustrate
that we do not yearn for a solo victory. We will not get up in SC's to
a point where a solo is even possible, much less probable. On the
other hand, Austria's SC count will continue to grow more quickly than
my or any other leader's, and I can only hope my august comrades are
able to identify and respond to this before it is too late. Emperor
Jorge seems to be your friend; he is only insofar as it helps him to
achieve a selfish solo victory."
The Sultan publicly reiterated Turkey's desire to be part of a fair
and balanced shared victory with other right-minded powers.

There was a request from one player for a 48h extension. Although it
would ordinarily be a bit late to ask for an extension, I think it's
in the best interest of the game to prevent NMRs at this point.
I will adjudicate in 22 hours. All are welcome to submit updated

1648 090623: Fall 1651 Moves - charlesf (Aug 05, 2009, 2:08 pm) |
Hallo zusammen!
Well, well... A total of eight centres swapped major power hands this season. A record so far. Perhaps 1651 marked the transition to the mid-game. A mere look at the map's tangle of move and support lines shows that the entire continent is fully engaged in continent-wide warfare. True to history, Russia sliced through Polish territy with uncanny easy, though Sweden failed to accomplish the conquest of Courland the warrior-king Charles X brought about. The Rzeczpospolita however has been able to offset some of those losses at home by regaining the principality of Transylvania, though apart from that a strategic stalemate has persisted in the Balkan theatre.
Yet for all the sweeping manoeuvres in the East, the big news comes from the West! Spain has invaded France in force! Nonetheless, the Bourbons have managed to get the better of the Austrians in Italy thanks to the help of His Holiness and that at least means France will maintain a force of four units throughout 1652. Whether or not this will include a naval component or not will have to be seen...
And then what about the Commonwealth of England and - as we may now rightly say - Scotland?! I trust most observers would have wagered on England being the first power to be destroyed. Yet now Cromwell has banked two builds, an achievement only equalled by Russia this year. The entire British mainland is governed from Westminster, no foreign fleets are stationed in its surrounding waters and the regicidal regime has established a foothold on the continent. The Commonwealth does not command as many forces as most other powers, but these events surely will be a welcome respite to a once beleaguered country.
Looking towards Scandinavia, the Swedish Army stationed in the Empire has fought its way out of an encircled position. Poor Frederick's reconquest of his capital proved shortlived and I trust he's established his court-in-exile at Oldenburg. Something of a mixed record for both Northern Crowns this year.
As for the minor powers, I don't think it's all that surprising these four are left. They all are located in contested areas on the margins of multiple players' spheres of influence.
Turning to other matters, I've lately added another change to the variant. Lake Ladoga now is new sea space. Allows for greater flexibility in that part of the map. The four other changes made for v2.9 are of course also to be found in the new v3.0 version. Check out the attached map.
Liebe Grüsse,
Charles

DC266 Fall 1902 Results - MattTheLesser (Aug 05, 2009, 12:11 pm) |
My apologies for not getting this out last night; the missing player,
Austria, got his orders in well before the extended deadline and then I
just forgot to send the results out last night. This season sees some
interesting happenings all over the board as the grace prevented an
Austrian NMR but not much else and Russia and Turkey each take a center
off of the Archduke, Italy takes Marseilles, England forces his way into
St. Petersburg, and Germany continues to grow.
We have two retreats: Austrian F Gre may retreat to Ion, Alb, or OTB,
and Russian F GoB may retreat to Fin, Lvn, or OTB. Those retreats and
the winter adjustments (adjustments due are listed below the
adjudication) will be due this Friday, August 7, at 9 pm eastern.
Adjustments may be submitted conditionally on the retreats.

DC 260: F1903 Mercy Killings - AceRimmer (Aug 05, 2009, 8:12 am) |
In little league baseball, games can end by mercy rule when one team is ahead by ten or more runs. In horse racing, they will shoot the horse if it is hobbled beyond capacity. And in Diplomacy, we eliminate the Communists. Both China and Russia become phantoms of history this season, and I think both eliminations are merciful.
For the rest of you, however, the fun is just beginning. Sure, Persia is slapping himself on the back for having three builds (only two usable on account of that army in Iran). And Siberia is now a vast Arctic Empire. Indonesia? Plus two. And while not growing, neither India nor Japan is a slouch. Yes, gentlemen, it's not always clear when the mid-game has arrived, but it is in this game. Welcome to the mid-game. Pick your friends. Pick your enemies. Time to dance.
I have taken the liberty of adjudicating the three Russia retreats off the board, and I am also taking the liberty of disbanding the Chinese and Russia units for the Winter.
That leaves us with:
India: Supp 8 Unit 8 Build 0
Indonesia: Supp 7 Unit 5 Build 2
Japan: Supp 7 Unit 7 Build 0
Persia: Supp 11 Unit 8 Build 2
Siberia: Supp 7 Unit 5 Build 2
Those orders are due Thursday at 10:00 CST (15:00 GMT). Then, we'll advance to S1904 next Tuesday.

DC-239 GM is a Dummy (New Deadline) - TheWhiteWolf (Aug 05, 2009, 4:13 am) |
Folks,
Wow, I should really not be adjudicating at five in the morning. John is away until the 7th, so I obviously should not have set the deadline for that date. New winter deadline is Monday, 10 August at 2pm EDT (6pm GMT,) or as soon as I receive the last adjustment.
Make sure you send in what you really want the first time! If I get a full set of winter orders by Friday or Saturday, that is when I'll adjudicate.
Sorry for the confusion,
Wolf

Folks,
Once again, I forgot a couple things. I've had two draw proposals: an Italy solo, and an AI draw. Please vote on both of them with your adjustments.

Guys,
I've been so used to hitting reply all for Charles' benefit that I
accidentally just sent all of you my orders. In the spirit of the game,
I really hope that each of you will do the honorable thing and delete
the below email without looking at it, even though there's no way anyone
would know. Just in case I will be changing my orders, but it would be
greatly appreciated if you all didn't look at them and screw me over
just because of one little mistake.
