DC 218 SHIFT LEFT: Fall 1911results - packrat (Jul 18, 2009, 12:21 pm) |
I think we should shift everyone left - for this next season.
Hmmm, I wonder how that would play out - after fall of each
year, but prior to the winter, everyone shifts left one country
as per the list of where each started.

Variants and the Variant Bank - diplomacyworld (Jul 18, 2009, 12:05 pm) |
Stephen Agar is working on scanning and posting the full contents of his NAVB files, so a much more complete listing will be available in time (this is a large project and will take weeks to months). All I had to do was bug him to death and register my own variant website domain to force him to give up sleep and time with his family!
In the meantime, he needs some specific help and I have been assigned the task. Stephen's files (and what he has posted on variantbank.org, the un-updated version) pretty much only cover variants produced before 2001.
If you have variants which were produced since then, I need them. You can check the web site to see if they are listed at all. If not, I need them! Or if you're not sure, don't bother - just assume I need them.
Remember, as this is a variant bank (meant to be all ecompassing), we need not just the most recent version, but each major version along the way. So whether you're a designer, enthusiast, or just casual Diplomacy variant player, if you have electronic or paper copies of any variant which you think may not be in his files, contact me at diplomacyworld(at)yahoo.com. Without your help, we can't get this task completed!!![Reply] |
Unknown (Variants) FuzzyLogic Jul 18, 12:57 pm |
Hi Doug,
For a comprehensive variant list, see our very own dipwiki.
While the variant bank is a staple of the hobby, what makes the dipwiki unique is that every variant creator has complete control of his own wiki pages on the variant. Instead of having to create one's own website, anyone with the desire to create a variant can create their page in the wiki quickly and easily, without needing to contact someone. They can upload maps, format text, create revisions, and so on.
Links to Realpolitik files, JDip files, Judge files, can all be linked up entirely by the end-user.
I believe this feature is what's made the dipwiki successful, since there is no dependency on any one person to process updates. The content is entirely controlled by the creators of the variants themselves.

DC263 Bab5 PRESS; Re: DC263 2359 UTS pre-game from... - savwa4 (Jul 18, 2009, 3:42 am) |
Re: DC263 2359 UTS pre-game from griminallyinsane
Well, Tom, I'll fill you in. Gather 'round children. I'll recount the
major rolls as I remember them. I'll try not to reveal any plot twists etc
so as not to blow it for you. It was an excellent series. You might enjoy
taking it in yourself someday.
And So It Begins (said in a Vorlon voice as if recounting a tale);
There is an alliance of races. They are allied against the Bad Guys, the
Essence of Evil, The Darkness This is a loose alliance and is always in
danger of breaking apart.
The Drazi symbolize the alliance. During episodes they do things (good bad
brave and not so brave) But their common theme is to be the voice of the
alliance. How do the members feel. What actions do they support.
The Drazi are/represent the backbone of the alliance
Babylon 5: An Earth station that broke away during a civil war. Hence, it
our game anybody who occupies can build there.
It is a place where all the alliance hangs out. Sort of a UN of the future.
It is HQ.
Mimbar: Mimbari may be the most intelligent race. They are very spiritual.
The Mimbars are technically very superior to Earth. Earth, out of
stupidity, Gets in a war with the mimbars. Mimbaris show mercy to earth.
It's all incestuous and really complicated and out of the scope of this
treatise. Mimbar & Babylon form the core of the alliance.
Narns & Centauri; Have been at war (or are currenlty at war, I forget).
The Centauri win. Narns engage in insurrection.
Hence, in our game there is no room between these races and the chance of
conflict is nearly unavoidable.
During the first seasons the Narns are unlikable. Kinda reptilian and
obsessed with taking Centauri blood. The Centauri are human and
diplomatically correct.
As time wares on though the viewer cannot help but sympathize with the Narn
cause.
And finally out of romantic relationship with their own history
the Centauri wind up allied with the forces of Evil and are thereby consumed.
Vorlons, How could we forget the vorlons? They are an older race and have
superior knowledge and technology. They know much more than anyone else
about the shadows. They are mysterious. Nobody has even seen one outside
of his 'encounter suit'.
Then, there is the Shadows. Bum Bum Bum Bum. These are the dark forces of
evil. These are a TITAN race as opposed to the OLYMPIANs of the Alliance.
Back in some good ol' day there two major forces. These forces somehow
fostered the younger races (alliance). One was white and good the other was
the shadow. The light (race/force/group) believed in nurturing the
youngsters and helping them to reach heights. The Shadows, in a rather
Nietzche world view, believe that through hardship, blood, & suffering the
younger races will rise and produce superiority.
Hence, in our game the only way to survive is to unite against the Shadows.
Oh, and somewhere along the line the hero of the story dies and is
resurrected. Well actually there are two heroes. They both die and are
resurrected.
--and ya just gotta see Lazerus.

Talk about feeling out of my element. Not only is this my first foray into
variants, I have never seen an episode of Bab5. I was thinking I should have
left the spot open for someone who knows the series, but this variant looked
too cool to miss out on.
So, I apologize if I miss the boat on any references to the show (I am an

I'd say 'Good Luck' but that would only apply to any games you play after this
one, so instead, I will say, 'Game on!'

I think we should shift everyone left - for this next season.
Hmmm, I wonder how that would play out - after fall of each
year, but prior to the winter, everyone shifts left one country
as per the list of where each started.

DC 254, Summer 1904 - alwayshunted (Jul 17, 2009, 5:35 pm) |
Hi folks,
Well, no word from Hari, so unfortunately I am going to start looking for a replacement player.
I won't state a deadline for fall because we're on hold while I look for a new player.
That brings up another issue. I am travelling for work in remote areas starting on Monday. I will have no internet access whatsoever, so I have no choice but to delay the game for a bit. If I can find a replacement by Monday morning it will hardly affect the game at all, so here's to hoping.
In the mean time, here is summer 1904.

France:
F Brest - Gascony

I'll be in touch soon. Maps are attached.

DC 262: Angstskrik - Spring 826 Adjudication - benjamin.hester at us.... (Jul 17, 2009, 12:42 pm) |
The map and adjudication are certified as official. As I cannot review the .dpy file for accuracy from my current sad state of affairs, I would have to advise everyone to ensure that it matches the map Scott attached.
I see no necessary retreats yet (correct?) so we will proceed with the Thursday July 23 1700 EST deadline. (NOT GMT+1 as I mistakenly entered in the last email...not sure where the heck I got that from, maybe habit from adjudicating old games in Iraq...getting senile in my 30s....)
Thanks!

Honored Kings of the Dark Ages -
Scott, our Norse player, has graciously agreed to step up and push the results through Realpolitik during my training away from home without RP access. So what you see below are the raw results of the orders, which Scott will run through RP and republish the results, map, and DPY file. I'll take a look at that, certify it as official, announce any necessary retreats, set a new deadline, and we'll proceed. Much thanks to Scott for helping out during this frantic time.
Fall 826 will be tenatively be set for Thursday, July 23, 1700 GMT+1. If a separate retreats deadline is required, I will follow up with that. Thanks to all for remembering to mail this account and for getting your orders in on time!

As always, for those just joining us or observing, here is the player list:

DC255 Spring 1906 Results - MattTheLesser (Jul 16, 2009, 8:05 pm) |
This season is devoted mostly to positioning, as Dark enters Snow after
Red vacates it for the Sea of Cherries. Red also gets into the act a
bit in the south my heading to Cold and bouncing with Yellow in
Sunshine. And in the southern seas Blue orders perfectly so as to deny
Yellow any progress at all.
We have no retreats, so we move directly to Fall 1906, which will be due
this coming Monday, July 20, at 9 pm eastern.

As always, for those just joining us or observing, here is the player list:
