World 3C - 4th test! - FuzzyLogic   (Jul 09, 2009, 2:05 pm)
To the players from dc40, dc65, dc92 - There are only a couple spots left in the next run of the 17-player World map! If you want to give it another go, sign up at www.diplomaticcorp.com?game=re003

The first edition, dc40, ended in a Solo for Kenya, Wyvillmike.
The second edition, dc65, ended in a Solo for the Mideast, yours truly.
The third edition, dc92, ended in a Solo for Clark of Ghana.

3 Solo victories in 3 plays - each one coming from a player starting in or near Africa. What is it about that region that makes it so vitally important - perhaps the proximity to 3 continents? And then the highest requested countries are typically those remote corner ones like Antarctica and Oz - but in all 3 plays, both of these countries got royally hosed. Time to buck the trends!

Sign up now, and enjoy,
-mike

1648 090623: Winter 1649 Retreats/Adjustments - charlesf   (Jul 09, 2009, 12:23 pm)
Moin Moin!

Now, our first year is over. Perhaps this is a good point to mention a number of changes I am considering (in descending likelihood of them being implemented):

- SICILY: A new space adjacent to Naples, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian.
- ATLANTIC SEABOARD WATERS: Can't think of any better name right now. This would be the Eastern half of an MAO split down the middle, from Ireland straight down to Morocco.
- NORTH SEA/FLANDERS, ENGLISH CHANNEL/UNITED PROVINCES: All these spaces would be made adjacent (two red arrows indicating this).
- SAXONY/BAVARIA: Those two spaces would touch rather than Swabia and Prague meeting another.
- INCREASE OF VICTORY CRITERION TO 20 SCs: Right now not a likely change. But I've always been wondering what the best victory threshold is.

None of these changes I'm contemplating have anything to do with what's going on in our game. Just the general ideas kicking around my head. I'd welcome any thoughts you might have regarding these matters (or have other possibly desirable changes that may occur to you).

Our 1650 Spring Moves deadline is on Wednesday, 15 July. Please make sure I have your preliminary orders by late Sunday. Keeps me from bugging you thereafter. Smile

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Heya folks,

Well, the delay this week is almost entirely on my hands - and I sincerely apologize for it. I completely lost Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday when I lost all gas and power at home. Guess a neighbour didn't call to mark out the utility lines when he was digging and severed some main lines, in the process knocking out power and gas to the whole neighbourhood.

The good news is that he wasn't killed. I'm not quite sure how that happened... But I definitely think he's going to hear about it at the next neighbourhood barbecue. =P

Anyways, despite the extra time though, I'm still short a set of orders. I'll wait till I get home from work before seeking out a replacement. And speeking of replacements, Nick Higgins has been good enough to step in as the replacement Knight. (Yay!!) I will announce his email address this evening with the turn result.

Thanks for bearing with me this week. Your humble GM was very stinky and grumpy...

Fascinating cultural insight, here in England we'd be happy he wasn't killed only as it would give us the opportunity to do it!

Cheers,

Trout

Exactly my thoughts!

That, and, "He'll hear about it at the next neighborhood barbeque" ---> He cut power & gas?  He almost WAS the next neighborhood barbeque! Smile

Glad everything is back in working order Trout.  Lucky this happened in the summer time instead of the dead of winter.

Heya guys,

Still no build submitted by our vacationing English player.  I'm all for giving people the time they need, but at some point we need to keep the game rolling...

I will extend one additional 24 hours here in hopes that Bill can find access and time to send in his build.  If nothing is received by tomorrow night, we'll waive the build and head on into the Spring round.

Thanks again for all the patience, everyone.  Cheers!

DC230 Lost Kings - Winter 1907 - Looks Just Like T... - former.trout   (Jul 09, 2009, 1:11 am)
Heya folks,

Delay was totally my fault this turn, and I sincerely apologize.  I blame my neighbour, who didn't stake out the utilities before digging in his new fence and ended up severing a couple major underground lines...  In the process knocking out power and gas for the whole neighbourhood.

No internet and no hot showers for three days.  Colour me unhappy.

Anyways, on with the show.  France builds the big three, Germany unleashes a new fleet and army pair.  With that in place, we move smartly into Spring 1908.  Deadline for orders will be set for Monday, July 13th (11:59 PM GMT).

Once again, apologies for the delay everyone.  And one final shout-out to Bruce for playing the Italians out to the very bitter end...  Thanks man!

Cheers,

No internet and no hot showers for three days.  Colour me unhappy.

Anyways, on with the show.  Germany continues the march to the Urals - displacing the final Russian unit and snapping up Yorkshire.  Meanwhile, Venice falls to the Austrians who due to space limitations, fail to profit from it.

Two retreats needed, both mentioned above.  The Russian retreat is relatively moot as the army will have to disband with the Winter - but the Italian in Venice can fall back to Apulia or Tuscany.  Deadline for retreats will be set for Friday, July 10th (11:59 PM GMT).

Once again, apologies for the delay everyone.  Cheers,

Above may be true for the British Empire but the orders this time were very foggy. 2 orders for lon( I always take 1st). None for Hol. 1 for non-existant A Bel. Invalid move for Mao. Turkish moves were crisp & deadly on the other hand. Thanks for playing, Mark, as G is done. At least no chance of the guy with mustache coming to power. When I was doing 12-18 games in past I never waited. For just 1 now I will but not necessarily this long. Both rets have only 1 option. If want to disband instead - 24 hrs. 7/16 FOR FALL

DC255 Fall 1905 Results - MattTheLesser   (Jul 08, 2009, 10:02 pm)
As expected, we say goodbye to Light as Dark assimilates his final
center. Thanks to Ross for stepping in and fighting it out until the
end. In other news, Yellow as expected sails into Magenta, finally
gaining that elusive 5th center. And, consequently, Blue is knocked
down to his three home centers and looks to have an uphill battle ahead
of him. In the north, Red and Dark jockey for position as Red marches
into Ink and sails into Snow, but loses the Sea of Ice to Dark. Also of
note is that Yellow made the first attempt in a while to take the
Crystal from Red, but the attack was successfully repelled.

There is only one retreat (Red F Sea of Ice may retreat to Garnet, Sea
of Cherries, or OTB), so we will have that retreat and adjustments all
due this Friday, July 10, at 9 pm eastern. As usual I will adjudicate
as soon as I have orders from everybody. And yes, I mean everybody, as
in addition to Red's retreat Dark and Yellow each have a build (and Red
could have a build if he disbands his fleet) and Blue has a disband.

Also, as 1905 has come to a close, just a reminder that, by my house
rules, I will now accept end game proposals, to be posted for vote with
the following adjudication, with votes due the following adjudication.
Direct specific questions first to my house rules on the DC site, and
then to me if those are not satisfactorily clear.

1648 090623: Fall 1649 Moves - charlesf   (Jul 08, 2009, 12:53 pm)
Moin Moin!

First of all, sorry for the glitch email earlier. One wrong ENTER and it was off. Fortunately, I had not yet added any genuine information, so no harm done other than filling your inboxes unnecessarily. Lesson learnt and I shall ensure that cannot happen with actual adjucations. Please accept my apologies.

Now, how has our first year turned out? The year began with the great powers of Europe acting largely in a peaceful manner towards another. The fall campaigning saw yet tensions rising to the boiling point in numerous parts of Europe. Queen Christine has shattered the "Peace of the North" by overrunning territories once held by Frederick III. Further to the West, Cromwell's Republic may be paying for having executed poor Charles (always have a soft spot for my namesakes!). Her conquest of Scotland proved but a brief interlude, though at least England itself is yet controlled from Westminster. In Central Europe, Spain's attack on Swabia has been repulsed and the vaunted Army of Flanders was in turn defeated by a joint Austro-French offensive. And in the Mediterranean Spain's ambitions in Italy were not only checked, but her Napolitan bulwark itself was lost. In Eastern Europe, Sweden championed Courland's Keppler dynasty's on going de-facto independence from Poland, whereas Czar Alexis has methodically gone about the conquest of the Tartar Khanate.

In many a region the loyalties of lesser powers played a decisive role. I cannot stress how important it is to sway those in your favour and it is only too apparent that some powers have been distinctly more successful in this endeavour. While on the subject of general advice I think I can give in my role, do not neglect communications with powers farther afield. This is especially important given the role minor powers play, but also the far lower victory criteria than you might be used to from Standard Diplomacy. Don't leave any stone unturned!

Let me thank you players for a smooth game so far. May it remain so! Please remember to send ALL your diplomatic correspondence to me, not least because otherwise my statistical findings will be marred. Also, I ask you to make it a habit of yours to get your move preliminary orders in no later than Sunday. Expect to be unceasingly bugged by me should you not do so. :p

I should perhaps also mention that the latest issue of Diplomacy World is available for download (http://www.diplomacyworld.net/), including my introductory article regarding 1648. I thank those of you who pointed out the various mistakes I had made. Doug Kent really went out of his way to help get it done and published in this issue. It's no coincidence that Diplomacy World has enjoyed a renaissance since he became lead editor.

You shall find the Realpolitik status file attached as always. Now, about the Winter orders. You may make your adjustments conditional on the immediately preceding retreat/disband orders since I am adjucating both in one fell swoop. The deadline is tomorrow, Thursday 6 PM CET. I may however publish the adjucation earlier, should I have all orders and nobody explicitly asks me to wait until the 6 PM deadline.

Took me longer to get this done than I had thought, but wanted to prevent any mistake from happening this time over.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

MESSAGES:

From France:

Dateline, Paris, France. Concerned about the recent anti-monarchial moves in England, where the British have just excecuted their king, France has sworn that it will aid Charles II, who currently resides in comfortable exile in one of the King's spare palaces, in regaining his patrimony. France has asked for support from other European nations to help convoy Charles and his invasion force of English Royalist emigres into Scotland to restore the Stuarts to power, saying, "The French fleet isn't seaworthy enough to venture too far into the North Sea without endangering our own security." Who knows where the French fleet, currently enjoying the light to moderate chop of the English Channel, will head, whether it will be into Cornwall or into Ireland, the traditional place where the French invade to help influence wars on England. Stay tuned for further details.

From Turkey:

BENEVOLENT TURKS STRIKE OUT AGAINST SPANISH AGGRESSION

For Immediate Release

CONSTANTINOPLE (Turkey) - Fall 1649 - The Sultan issued a proclamation this week, calling for Jihad against the Spanish Empire.

"From Flanders to Naples to Seville, Spain already has military presence across much of mainland Europe," commented the Sultan. "Now we watch them invade the fine lands of our North Africa brothers, cut
down through the noble lands of the Holy Roman Empire, and amass the largest military force in the world. With their deploying a large navy already in the Mediterranean, we simply cannot stand by and watch this
gluttony go unchecked. Thus, the great people of Turkey will unite in a fist of controlled fury to lead the Spanish dismantling."

Rumour has it the Sultan plans to seek out new allies to assist in an equitable and balanced split of Spanish holdings. Active diplomacy is expected in the year ahead.

"We have no need to travel beyond our beloved Mediterranean," continued the Sultan. "Our fair friends in western and northern Europe have nothing to fear from us once the Spanish menace is contained. We look forward to assist other right-minded powers in achieving their ambitions in the powerful Atlantic, while staying committed to our negotiated peace in the east."

In a show of diplomacy to other European powers, the Turks have already provided various military and diplomatic assistance. Among the recipients are Poland, who received military support into the fine lands of Transylvania from their Turkish friends.

243 AGWOPA vs Murphy's law - agwopa   (Jul 08, 2009, 11:58 am)
Have you ever had one of those day's? It seems I am have one of those months. Call it bad Karma or the full moon that is lasting for ever (or just seems like it). From the short staff at work.. Fellow employees vacations, then when they return we get back injuries and sick kids etc. leading to one long day after another. Of course there is more... Everywhere I go I hit every red light,I take the car to the shop and after you get it back the girlfriend say "oh I noticed when I followed you to the shop that your brake light is out on the driver side". See after I get the car back, is not the time to mention it. Even when she surprised me with the two day one night getaway the ( I have to mention I am 6'6" tall) so when the shower is set for 5'5" all I can do is blame it on Murphy. And then my Mother who is over ... on second thought... if is bad karma to talk about a ladies age I am not looking for any more trouble so I am 48.. so when she took a fall over the holiday and broke her Humorous (which she thought was not funny) it has been a long two weeks. She will recover fine so all is well...
Now you are getting the idea why I am falling behind this last 5 days or so and forgive me I will catch up on my three games I am GMing on Friday and Sunday and the games I am playing, well I hope I do not miss too much and hope I can catch up on those also. For real life is sometimes just that.
Thanks all and I know that this negative energy that is flowing my way will ebb and flow and will get better and I hope I time the lottery ticket for the really good day that must be coming.
The Laugh out loud Drew, for otherwise I would have to "Throw a Dwarf through a window" just to release some tension, Thanks you and promises to get back on track by Sunday so hang in there all.
Drew
