DC261 - Missing Order Spring 1902 - aramis604   (Jul 07, 2009, 12:11 am)
Well, the deadline for Spring 1902 has passed and unfortunately I am missing some orders... but I will allow an additional 24 hours for everyone to get orders submitted.

If you have already submitted orders for this turn you may still send changes. I will however adjudicate as soon as I have orders from all players. If after 24 hours I am still missing orders I will adjudicate without them.

DC-244; Spain Update on the Home Front - Agrippa   (Jul 06, 2009, 4:23 pm)
Greetings All,

As some of you already know, my wife and I are expecting our first baby and the due date is July 21.  So it's fast approaching and of course things could happen/change at any time.

Once the baby arrives I will have limited time (for the first while only i hope, optimistically) for extracurricular emails, etc.  Thus I won't be writing much if any diplomatic emails at first, though I promise to make every effort to continue to send my Orders, etc. on time, and that should be doable.

In the interim I invite any of you to write me now if you wish to come to any agreements/understandings, or mutual support/peaceful-coexistence (?), or interesting machinations of a devilish nature you wish to suggest.
I will continue to send my orders based on the agreements reached, and I will not necessarily interpret silence as aggression nor assume friendliness either from those who choose to keep their own counsel.

Sincerely,

Rodrigo

DC-244 Fall 1457 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 06, 2009, 2:59 pm)
All,
Sorry again for the delay. Let's try to get this game back on track. We've got a few retreats this season, one of them with multiple options. Since that's the case, I'm going to require confirmation of on-board retreat for the two with only one option, and a clear order for the one with multiple options. I've already entered the two orders that only have one option, so they'll show up as arrows on the map.

The Turks in Piedmont disband. No other retreats. Otherwise, miscommunication is creeping up upon us, as nobody knows the mind of Benjy, and EF both move on Munich. Still, there appear to be no consequences resulting therefrom. So, we'll all meet again on Thursday.

Just as a note, it appears that we'll be the last game afoot in the Winter Blitz. Garry Bledsoe looks to be a shoe-in for tournament champ with a double solo. So, congratulate him if you know him.

Dearest Bertie,
The situation for me is most grave...
And you ask about GOL?

I must have more units to fight the Turk. By taking Iberia
and moving to Livonia your intentions would seem clear...
and your plans would not appear to include me!
Should you be genuinely interested in sharing Europe I
would ask you to relinquish Brest or SPA to allow me some
breathing space. I fear you will not agree, but hope you
will!
I anxiously await your news...

1648: Comparing it to Tommy Larsson's 1600 variant - charlesf   (Jul 06, 2009, 6:09 am)
I might from now on post some of the 1648 variant design discussions here. The following is a reply to a posting in the DVWorkshop, a yahoo group focused on variant design.

---

Cristiano, thanks for your note. Let me add my two cents to what you wrote:

> I suggest you take a look at Tommy Larsson's 1600 variant

I've known about 1600 for quite some time (2000?), long before I embarked on designing my own 17th century design. I disagree with a number of Larsson's design decisions and, had I done a pure map variant as he did, it would have also been very different from his.

That being said, I do think it should make for fun gaming. Indeed, I've always thought it one of the better Diplomacy variants.

Did my knowledge of 1600 influence 1648? It may have encouraged me to deliver my own take on the 17th century, but since I did not consult 1600's map while designing my own, I dare say any similarities are quite coincidental, both being based on the historical dynamics of the time.

> It has nine powers, exactly the same ones of 1648.

Those nine are the obvious choices, so this is not too surprising. Other possible candidates, e.g. the Dutch and Venetian Republics, are left out for good reason.

> The map is roughly the same.

In terms of geographic scope, yes. But other than, I think the maps have very little in common. 1648 is a good deal closer to A&E in terms of provinces adjacencies, I should say. Yet Tommy and I arranged the Russian and in part the English SCs in the same way. Being guided by history, we evidently came to quite similar results on that count.

> Tommy's 1600 is definetely equilibrated. One good thing, it kept the number of supply centers at a minimal necessary.

Five of his great powers start off with 4 SCs. I don't think 1600 is minimalist, but then I don't agree with you that having more SCs is necessarily bad.

> Feaux's 1648 presents about 60 SCs. Having standard's 34 scs for 7 players as an ideal account, a 9 player-map should have about 44 SCs.

58, to be exact. Perhaps having roughly 44 SCs might make sense were 1648 a pure map variant.

> At the openings stage, the garrisoned neutrals will masque the excessive number of SCs, but soon into midgame the game may become tactics excercise.

First of all, I think a number of minor powers will prove remarkably resilient and survive the first two years.

But given the minor power mechanism, I think having 30 neutral SCs is perfectly appropriate. It's not clear to me why this might reduce a game to a tactics exercise, as you suggest.

In any case, I consider both Standard Diplomacy (owing to it being the hobby's point of reference) and Ambition & Empire (the origin of the Diplomatic Points mechanism) by far the most useful benchmarks for comparative analysis. Actually, I completed an article for the upcoming Diplomacy World issue focussing to a large extent on precisely such comparisons between Standard and 1648.

Cheers,

Charles

Heya Partners,

The time flew by pretty fast, eh? Suddenly, I look at my watch and see that its only 19 hours before the deadline for Fall 08! Zoinks!!

To answer a couple questions that I've been asked.

1. No, I unfortunately was not on top of things enough to sit down and send out the Summer 08 map.
2. I met with defeat in all my attempts to find a permanent replacement for the Knights.
3. Our temp Knights player, who submitted orders last turn, has graciously volunteered to send in orders again so that there is no delay. So I DO have orders for the Knights in-hand.
4. The colour blue. (Someone out there knows what this means.)
5. Pythagoreans formula is the simple method of calculating the length of one side of a right-angled triangle, if the two other side-lengths are known. However, if you were sleeping during high school math class when the taught this (like I was) then I'm not going to fill in the blanks.
6. FALL 08 ORDERS ARE DUE IN 19 HOURS!!!

Cheers everyone.

.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.EC_hmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;} Hey folks, here it is. A couple of issues to mention first off:

1. I am going to change the time of day that I make my deadlines. It has become clear to me with my new job etc that evenings just aren't working out, so I'm moving the times up by 5 hours. This will make them due at 5 pm my time, or 11 pm GMT on the same day.

2. I have a request for a short delay due to a holiday, which will put off Autumn and Winter for a few days. The new deadline will be in six days, on Monday the 6th of July, at 17:00 MST, which is for autumn retreats. Winter adjustments will be due on Tuesday the 7th. Please note that if I get an order from Russia marked as FINAL I will adjudicate the autumn turn early, but winter will still be due on Tuesday the 7th because of the requested delay.

Okay, now on to the goods. There are rumours flying around about the job security of the head of the Austrian bureau of communication. It seems the illustrious leader often doesn't know where his forces are located, and as a result, orders are often not reaching the appropriate commanders. Russia's attempt to liberate Warsaw falls slightly short, for the time being at least... but perhaps the Turkish armies lurking to the south are there to help....... perhaps not. Lots brewing in the west, with some areas changing hands. Fun, fun fun! There has been a massacre in Brest, with the English army being destroyed, and there is one retreat for Russia... see below.

DC-224 Fall 08 Deadline Reminder - former.trout   (Jul 06, 2009, 12:16 am)

The Pythagorean Theorem:

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

which is really just a simplification of the cosine law, since cos90 = 0.

DC255 Summer 1905 Results - MattTheLesser   (Jul 05, 2009, 9:29 pm)
Light seemingly throws in the towel by disbanding his A Ivo, while Dark
and Yellow retreat to Cha and Mal, respectively.

I'd like to finish this year by the end of the week so, for now, I'm
going to set a slightly shorter deadline for Fall 1905: this Wednesday,
July 8, at 9 pm eastern. If anyone feels this is too short and they
need more time just let me know.

Folks,
I am not setting a double standard here. I warned of possible disruption due to my cross-country move, did I not? This is all a result of that move. Please bear with me as I get settled in at my new locale.

DC255 Spring 1905 Results - MattTheLesser   (Jul 05, 2009, 1:29 pm)
My apologies for the delayed adjudication; I meant to run it Friday
night and simply forgot, and then could not do it yesterday because of
the holiday. Some interesting things develop on the board, most notably
that Light has been forcefully removed from his final holdout in Ivory.
However, while Dark focussed on this he lost some ground to Red, who
stormed into the Sea of Ice and Paper. In the south we finally have a
breakthrough; Blue takes the Forest Sea, but in the process Yellow
sneaks into the Aquatic Sea, meaning we will probably see a center
change hands for the first time in that battle.

We have three retreats: Light A Ivory may retreat to Snow, or OTB, Dark
A Paper may retreat to Chalk, Jet, or OTB, and Yellow F Forest Sea may
retreat to Cyan, Malachite, or OTB. Let's try to have these retreats by
tomorrow night, Monday, July 6, at 9 pm eastern. I have received one
order already as a conditional; I will adjudicate as soon as I receive
the other two.

SubjVery HappyC-227 Missing Orders

Folks,
I am so sorry to have held up the game. I forgot the deadline amid this crazy move. Since the delay is my fault, I'm holding the turn results until I get France and Italy's missing orders. Gentlemen, please get them to me as soon as possible.

DC 260 Asian: S1902 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Jul 05, 2009, 12:24 am)
Well, after a couple of delays (some due to my own schedule), we have the adjudication. However, since we have a delay until after the 14th, the additional delays in S1902 shouldn't make much difference. There are no retreats, and since I like to perform Move/Retreat/Adjust all in the same week, I am going to pace us leisurely and set F1902 for Monday, July 20th. As a special incentive, you will be allowed to move units to the moon Smile You just won't be allowed to move them off again in subsequent turns :O

I'd say you're feeling pretty good if you're in the JSPIN Coalition. However, if you're in the less popular CR Coalition, things aren't so hot. What I'm curious to know is: why are the two players who are in DC 258 with me the two guys getting jumped early? Well, I have no worries for their health. Fates in Diplomacy are like the Iowa weather -- it'll be different in another 10 minutes.

Good luck in the Fall.

DC-239 Deadline Reminder - TheWhiteWolf   (Jul 05, 2009, 12:24 am)
Folks,
The deadline is in less than 14 hours, and I'm still missing two sets. I'll be at a birthday party starting around the time of the adjudication, so it'll likely be a few hours late.
