1648 090623: RP Files and other matters - psychosis1973 (Jul 02, 2009, 2:37 pm) |
From a trawl of my past games, I've played with:
Mikael in DC167, DC232 and DC253
Jorge in DC185
Matt in DC193
Mikael and Jorge in DC195
The only ongoing game in the above is DC253. DC195 is still being played, but I was eliminated ages ago in that one!
My stance on this is the same as that set out by Mikael - each game is a clean slate!

Mikael and I are also both playing in the DC playtest of David Cohen's Known World 901.
Also, if any of you have a hankering for more playtesting, I am currently recruiting playtesters on DC for my new variant, Arctic Diplomacy. I'll admit it does not have the draw of DPs, but it does have the cool new feature of ice territories that melt and freeze over the course of time. There are three spots left if anyone is interested.

On a more general note, recognise that with the DP mechanism the need to
communicate with the whole board is far more pronounced than in Standard
Diplomacy! I don't think I'm overstepping the boundaries set by being the GM
by encouraging you to communicate a good deal with those who might be on the
other side of the board. Next to the clear DP-related advantages that might
arise from this, influencing the wider evolution of the board according to
your interests ought not be neglected. Don't let talks with those further

Furthermore, while I didn't ask so previously, I suggest as a matter of
fairness that those players who are currently playing with/against each
other elsewhere ought to communicate that to other players. I trust we all
are strictly against any form of metagaming and know to keep what happens in
one game not affecting what happens in the next.
Lastly, I believe I'll be off to Scotland for a couple of weeks in August.
Don't worry, I'll seek a temporary replacement GM should those holiday plans

1648 090623: RP Files and other matters (dc264) psychosis1973 Jul 02, 02:37 pm |

There are three spots left if anyone is interested.

you will find the new Realpolitik module for 1648 attached. But the
extracted 1648 folder into RP's "Variant Files" folder and you're ready to
go. You may load the Spring 1649 .dpy file I sent you with the adjucation
and then try out various moves. I've already tested what amounts to my best
hunch of what the fall moves might look like and you might find doing a
similar exercise quite instructive.

Matt, I think such rivalry for the Arctic is a very good topic for a game considering this being an area of conflicting national interests. The ice rules add an interesting tactical problem, though I would have thought you'd have the ice gradually receding on account of global warming rather than merely waxing and waning as the seasons dictate.
In any case, I suggest you add some visual cues as to what areas freeze only in winter, are permanently frozen etc. to the map, rather than referring players to the rules.
You may wish to also consider conforming to the 1 to 2.0-2.5 unit-space ratio recommended by Stephen Agar. Your variant is a lot less dense, which makes for a really long game and it taking a really long time to get anywhere. Now, I recognise remoteness may have a thematic appeal, but from a gameplay perspective it leads to a less exciting game, imo.
It's one reason, quite frankly, why I would not play this design in its current incarnation. But then, that also applies to the vast majority of Diplomacy variants since I'm notoriously picky about what I like to see in a Diplomacy variant.
In any case, I like the thematic premise and think this project holds promise.

1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves - charlesf (Jul 01, 2009, 2:33 pm) |
Benjamin,
while I now live up north in Berlin, I used to live for a while in Passau, a beautiful town right on the Austrian border. I miss the hearty Southern German greeting up here. Further up north at the coast "Moin Moin" is a popular way of saying hello, but hereabouts it's just your boring "Guten Morgen/Tag/Abend" or "Hallo". Anyway, are you in some Armored Brigade?
As for being an interesting game to watch, well, I dare say any opening adjucation is inherently interesting. Can't wait to see how things develop. What's your take as an observer on the board?
Charles[Reply] |
1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves - SECOND CORRECTION - charlesf (Jul 01, 2009, 1:49 pm) |
Grüß Gott!
(Sorry. A Damascus moved to Egypt rather than Tekke. Don't know why I made such a mistake. Anyway, corrected the below and attached a .dpy file taking acount of this).
The very first adjucation is always something special. One has only the (written) word of one's fellow players to go on. Hopes and fears of what the future holds make for a conflicting cocktail of emotions. And how much more keenly are those felt when all parties are embarking on an unfamiliar journey, a first playtest!
Let me thank all players for us being off to a smooth start, having dilligently forwarded me their correspondence and in some cases sharing their strategic intentions with me. It has been most instructive and has helped me catch various mistaken notions in regards to the 1648's rules and geography. I am also constantly reminded that players approach a power position very differently from what I might tend to do.
Few words on my adjucating. Since I'm entering all the orders into Realpolitik and letting it work things out, the map output takes precedence over the written results, simply because there's less scope for me to mess things up with the former. Rest assured that I scrupulously check and double-check DP allocations. I'm happy to send you my spreadsheet for you to review these once the game's over.
Talking of Realpolitik, last night I created less anachronistic unit icons and updated the whole 1648 Realpolitik module (which had at least one bug, I'm afraid). I'll let you know once it's available for download. I've attached the .dpy file (a Realpolitik save game you can load once you've got the new module), so you can load it and have the present map situation at your disposal.
Since there are no pending retreats, we'll be immediately moving on to Fall 1649, its deadline being next Wednesday, 8 July.
Servus,
Charles

From France:
Dateline Paris: As soon as peace was declared in the streets of Paris from the recent unpleasantness in Germany, the peasants rose up against the nobles in an uprising some of the few literate Frenchmen are calling the Fronde. Seeking to quell the unrest and turn the energies of the French people into something productive, new French monarch Nathan Bourbon has decided to begin mobilizing the French army for further advances to achieve la glorie. Predictably, the revolts in Paris and other cities ceased as hot-blooded Frenchmen (and even a few Frenchwomen) sought to enlist to slaw the enemies of La Patrie. Where these new armies are going, no one has a clue.

1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves - SECOND CORRECTION - charlesf (Jul 01, 2009, 1:48 pm) |
Grüß Gott!
Servus,
Charles

MESSAGES:

Since there are no pending retreats, we'll be immediately moving on to Fall 1649, its deadline being next Wednesday, 8 July.

by the way, where are you from Charles? I haven't heard Grüß Gott since I left Bayern in December (US Army, previously stationed in the Ansbach area) - you from around there?

WWIV w15 builds! - FuzzyLogic (Jul 01, 2009, 1:13 pm) |
Hi folks,
WWIV is rolling again - welcome Max Victory as our new Sichuan leader, and latest inductee to the DC Light Brigade... Everyone had orders in already, but we're going to give Max a few days to get caught up on world events. New deadline in case anyone wants to update their orders - Friday July 3, 2300 GMT. (6pm Central). Note Friday is a non-work day for many in the US, so I'd suggest trying to wrap up today or tomorrow!
Enjoy,
-mike

1648 090623: Spring 1649 Moves CORRECTED - charlesf (Jul 01, 2009, 12:27 pm) |
Grüß Gott!
Servus,
Charles
