Folks,
Our Italy did not turn in orders nor did he respond to either of my emails that I have written him in the past two days. I am assuming that he no longer wants to play and am seeking a replacement. As soon as I find a replacement player I'll get the game going again.

DC215 Winter 1904 Results - Kenshi777   (Dec 27, 2008, 2:37 pm)
Fellow DC 215 players and GM -

I apologize for any delayed replies to email lately, I am backlogged by about a hundred messages. As some of you may know, I'm currently transitioning from active duty US Army to the Reserves, and moving from my current station in Germany to our new home in Dallas, Texas. I may lose internet access intermittently during that time, depending upon availability of places I can log on. My service at home ends tomorrow, and I will be moving out within the week. I do not need to do so yet, but I may need to ask for a deadline extension until I get settled in Texas, which should be second week of January or so. Thanks for your patience -

Trout - this may also affect my ability to start the January DC tournament and the dwprep demo game on time, but I will do all I can to avoid that. You'll notice that means I'm playing in 3 DC games and 0 ACD ones at the moment - looks like you might make a convert out of me yet Smile

DC222 Two Steps To Anarchy - Grinches In Spring - former.trout   (Dec 27, 2008, 10:19 am)
Heya folks,

Hope that you all had an excellent holiday and a wonderful Christmas. Have to say, though, that some of you definitely acted the Grinch in this one. Nothing says Christmas like total annhilation... =P

I'm bending my NMR philosophy as well, just for this game. Based on the title reference to Anarchy, I'd be kind of a tool if I didn't allow Civil Disorder. And so, with a second straight NMR, our Austrian friends find themselves slipping into that wonderful state of revolt. Thanks to Russia and Italy, however, it is a situation that will probably not last that long.

One retreat required in the north - owed by the English fleet in Norway. The deadline for Summer 02 will be set for Monday, December 29th (11:59 PM GMT).

Please review the results and let me know if you spot any errors. There were copious amounts of wine drunk in the Trout household last night, and while I'm pretty sure everything is correct you never know what the sauce might do. =P

Cheers!

dc186 (Late) Chinese EOG - TheWhiteWolf   (Dec 26, 2008, 9:04 pm)
Folks,
I know this is late in coming, but I haven't seen any other EOGs, so I guess better late than never.
First, I'd like to thank Christine for taking me in as a 'replacement' (even before the first shots were fired) - this was the first Colonial game I've ever played, and it was a blast.
Congratulations to my allies at the end for a job well done and a draw well won.
I started off this game in a shaky alliance with Russia. We managed to hold things together for a while, but I guess the long open border was too much temptation for him. The TSR was trouble for me, of course, but coming back was easier with such stalwart allies as Holland and Turkey.
I don't think I need to go into much detail, but I wanted to specifically thank Aidan and Jacob for sticking with me even through my time as an alleged patsy of Russia.
Hugh, you were an extremely frustrating person to attempt diplomacy with. I wish you luck int he future, but I suggest you try to work with people, instead of dictating to them.
Jason, I had a lot of fun in this game, and I hope I have the chance to cross swords with you again soon. You're a great ally and a formidable opponent.
Jerry, I'm sure we could have done significant damage if I'd stayed faithful to you, but as you said after my stab, those Twinkies looked awfully tempting.
Christine, you run a tight ship (which I respect a lot.) I got smacked a couple times for delinquency, but I can't say it's changed my attention span for the better... Thanks for such a great job on this one.

Fondest Regards,
The White Wolf

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement - TheWhiteWolf   (Dec 26, 2008, 7:31 pm)
Folks,
I may as well make a public announcement, instead of mentioning this to each individual player... I am generally a stickler for the rules, but in the case of winter negotiations, I try to mind my own business. I know the rules for the variant specifically state that no negotiations should take place before the winter deadline, and I backed that up in an earlier email. However, I'm not terribly concerned about this.
If you're going to talk to each other, talk all you like. I'm not about to rearrange country assignments or try to find a way to punish players for doing nothing wrong.

Have fun,
The White Wolf

hi all,

a few players in this game start have written me but since since the GM has asked (and the variant rules plainly state) that we should not engage in any diploamacy until AFTER the 1913 winter builds are publshed therefore i will not read any notes sent to me or write my own letter of introduction after winter 1913 builds are published. i would ask that this not prejudice you against me any way nor preclude any possible alliances with me or help form any against me...

wolfie, can we have a deadline after the builds at least as long as this one once we can talk? thanks...

Folks,
I concur that these builds should be done quickly and without prior negotiations. I've already got four sets of builds in, so let's do it this way:
For those of you with builds already in, make sure you have your final set in as soon as possible (if you wish to change.) For those of you without builds in, get them in to me as quickly as you can.
Once I have all seven sets in, I'll adjudicate. I won't send out results any earlier than Monday, 29 December at 2pm EST (7pm GMT,) in order to give everybody who's already sent me builds a fair chance to change if they wish. I'll set the final deadline for New Year's Day at the same time.
I reserve the right to adjudicate any time in that window, if I get a set in from everybody. Don't be late!

Guys,

Having taken part in creating the default HRs I can assure everyone that it was never the intention to create a set of rules that conflicted with the Standard Diplomacy rules.

The quote I just pasted from the rules says essentially the same thing as our house rules do - only our HRs throw in the SC condition as well. Instead of a bullet-point list, the standard rulebook just wrote it into a paragraph.

The bullet-point list is only to eliminate options to reduce the auto-disband to a single choice. All four conditions should be viewed as a set and taken together.

The final word is up to Jackson, of course. But the rule-book says that he made the right call, the HRs say that he made the right call and as the player whose unit it is I agree with it as well.

1) I actually requested a Fleet in Trieste. I've re-sent that email to the GM, not sure how I ended up with an Army in TRI instead.

2) I'm not sure I quite understand the "take the rules as a whole" argument. Don't you use alphabetically only as the last resort? And don't you use fleet over army only as the next-to-last resort? It would make more sense to me to keep a unit in a supply center, so I'd think that comes first. In which case, BLA should be disbanded and not MUN. I don't really care too much how this ends up, but that is the outcome that makes the most sense to me.

Number of spaces is counted regardless of unit type. Whether the unit is a fleet or an army is irrelevent. For the purpose of calculating distance from a home SC, the unit is either X number of spaces or it is not.

You guys are adding sub-text where there isn't any.

Exactly. Because both are two spaces away from Russias home SCs. Then you take the one that is not on an SC itself.

Go one step further. Same example but add a fleet in the Norwegian Sea. In that case, it would be the fleet that gets disbanded and Munich and Syria would both stay on the board.

None of those take precedence over each other - they are meant to be taken as a whole.

i.e.

The unit disbanded is the one that is furthest from a home center.
If more than one is equidistant from a home SC, then the unit removed is one not on a supply center.
If more than one are not on a supply center then you take fleets before armies.
Then you resort to the alphabet if there choices still have not resolved into one.

In this case there was only one unit that was two spaces away from a home SC. That was Munich.

Good grief. How did I miss sending in that order. Sorry guys.

Packrat is right though - the default is usually the unit furthest from the home centers. (Not just any center.) But default removals are covered by the HRS - which are in this case the default DC house rules.

"On a Winter turn an NMR (NBR/NDR) would mean that if the player was building - the builds would be waived and if the player was disbanding, units would be disbanded under the following rules [list:4e7afa7e7c] [*:4e7afa7e7c]Units not in a supply center before units in a supply center [*:4e7afa7e7c]Units further from home centers before units closer to home centers [*:4e7afa7e7c]Fleets before armies if equidistant per the above [*:4e7afa7e7c]Alphabetical"[/list:u:4e7afa7e7c]

Both of my units that are not on a supply center are only one space from a home center. Munich is two. As such, Jackson made the correct disband.

Long story short, the lapse on my part was unforgiveable and the forced disband is my fault. I think Jackosn made the right call.

Folks, I have a dispute about these adjudications.

The default by Russia seems to be incorrect adjudicated, according to the DiplomaticCorp House Rules.

The rules specifically state that the first unit to be removed is a unit that is not in a supply center. Clearly, MUN is a supply center.

Then, the next criteria states that the unit which is further from a home supply center is to be removed. Both FIN and BLA are one space away from a home supply center (even though STP is not owned by Russia, it is still a Home supply center).

The third criteria is a fleet before an army will be removed. BLA is a fleet. FIN is an army. Therefore, BLA should have been removed.

Thanks,
-kevin

DC-227 Winter 1913 Deadline Announcement - FlapJack   (Dec 26, 2008, 11:41 am)
hi all,

a few players in this game start have written me but since since the GM has asked (and the variant rules plainly state) that we should not engage in any diploamacy until AFTER the 1913 winter builds are publshed therefore i will not read any notes sent to me or write my own letter of introduction after winter 1913 builds are published. i would ask that this not prejudice you against me any way nor preclude any possible alliances with me or help form any against me...

wolfie, can we have a deadline after the builds at least as long as this one once we can talk? thanks...

Folks,
I concur that these builds should be done quickly and without prior negotiations.

DC 207: Fall 366 BC Adjucation - scaponig   (Dec 26, 2008, 9:42 am)
"Hence that general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack."
- Sun Tzu

We've got the skillfull in attack part down, but some people need to work on the knowing what the defend, as 5 SCs change hands, and the Shu-Chu stalemate in the South ends.

Thanks to Jack of the Chao for fighting it out to the end.

Also, the last neutral was dislodged, no need for orders as there will be no neutral SCs after this winter Sad

Two retreats, let's get them in by Monday, December 29 at 23:59 GMT. Of course, if I get them both early, I will adjucate then, so getting them in ASAP means I may have it done before the weekend is out:

Shu A Chang'an can retreat to Chincheng or Pei Daiyeng or
Daiyeng.
Chu A Ying can retreat to Han or Tung Ying.

Thanks!

Steve
