DC210 - ADJUDUCATION FALL 1915 - paolo_sforza   (Oct 24, 2008, 9:30 pm)
DIPLOMATICCORP DC210 - GREAT BALLS OF FIRE
1958 ORIGINAL GAME, 1958 ORIGINAL MAP, 3-SEASON GAME YEAR
ADJUDICATION FALL 1915 (TURN 5)
SATURDAY 25th OCTOBER 2008

GM Comment:

'Plucky little Belgium' gets plucked again - this time by the Kaiser's boys, but the French console themselves for its loss by oppressing the last free nation in Europe - Portugal.

The Royal Navy regains the North Sea following the offloading of its army (they've been on board a long time - but now stretching their legs in Yorkshire). Notice that disembarking doesn't take a whole move if both units are in place. Also notice the crossed through 'B' (on the 'moves' map) denoting a disembarking operation.

Austria-Hungary takes up position on its Galicia frontier as the Russians decide to attack the proposed German support than the actual advance. The Austro-Hungarian Adriatic fleet is supported (with its 2nd international support) big-time into the Ionian Sea, only to find that it is not opposed.

The former hot spot of the Balkans goes quiet as the Great Powers consolidate their gains, except in Rumania which sees the Ottoman Turks hoisting their flag in Bucharest. Their flag comes down in Athens as the Austro-Hungarians impose regime change in Greece.

The Russian loss of Rumania seems compensated for by occupying Erzerum.

All in all, an interesting turn. No dislodgements; so no retreats.

Remember to submit your adjustment orders for next turn. Read Annex C of the House Rules CAREFULLY. Remember, you can't just build in any old home centre.

[u:2de38f3ddc]Preliminary orders are highly recommended. [/u:2de38f3ddc]

Please put the game number 'DC210', season, year and country in the subject line of any orders.

A complete map history for the game (in the form of a slideshow) can be found at http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/slideshow.php?game_id=dc210

I've had a word with Mike Sims at Diplomaticcorp and although the slideshow has been implemented on the site, it can't as yet handle more than one map per turn. However, this is definitely on the 'things to do' list.

In the meantime, I've decided to reinstate the slideshow on my web site http://sforza.50webs.com/DC210.html as it can handle more than one map per turn.

Cheers,

Paolo.

GM Comment:

Things start to get interesting, as the hexagons again disappear as units disperse and open warfare breaks out in Belgium, the Carpathians and the Balkans.

Belgium takes on its traditional role as the cock-pit of Europe as Great Britain and France clash. The country doesn't change hands, although a stand-off causes it to be vacant at the end of the turn, its French fleet having pushed the British out of the English Channel.

In the North Sea the Royal Navy finds itself in another Jutland situation and this time the German Grand Fleet stays its ground (errr... waves). This dislodgement of the British fleet from the North Sea is an interesting situation. Luckily it had a stated retreat route. However, it has an army on board, so when it makes port in Edinburgh it cannot disembark the troops as the fleet cannot return to the sea area from which it came, as this is occupied by the Germans. The army has to stay on board the fleet in port. The relevant rule is C4, bullet 10.

In Norway, Russia demonstrates a way of boarding by moving a fleet to a space occupied by an army (note the flag). Without the 'B' notation, the fleet would have bounced.

Austria-Hungary also clashes with Russia over Galicia in an inconclusive campaign.

Further south, two offensives - one Ottoman against Serbia and the other Austro-Hungarian against Greece sees the Turks bundled back across the border and dislodged with no-where to go. The remnants of their destroyed army probably being marched north to prisoner-of-war camps deep in Austro-Hungarian territory.

Still not got my disk, so multiple maps per turn will have to wait a while longer. It'll be easy once I have the graphics software up and running again.

GM Comment:

The first adjustment season saw no mistakes in ordering. The hexagonal multiple unit symbol appears again where more than one unit has been built in a centre or where a unit has been built in a centre where there was already a unit. The actual units denoted by the hexagon are shown in the sidebars.

I think some of you are now starting to perceive the strengths and weaknesses of the various countries, particularly in respect of their build limitations. Having the rules regarding fleets only being built in naval bases and armies only being built in current capitals really adds a different flavour to the game.

DC210: ADJUDICATION FALL 1914 - paolo_sforza   (Oct 13, 2008, 4:53 pm)

GM Comment:

You all seem to be getting the hang of this version very quickly. However, some of you left it to the last minute to get in orders and questions. Luckily there were no major issues. If you want me to check the orders for silly mistakes (as I will until the end of 1915) then they need to be with me in enough time for you to correct them. Nag-nag-nag.

Things to note this time are Great Britain's 2 orders which cover 3 units - 2 fleets, one with an army on board. Moving a loaded fleet to a coast automatically disembarks the army and the fleet moves back to its original space all as one move. Alas, not successfully in this case as Belgium finds itself coming to terms with the 'benefits' of French occupation. The Entente not-so-Cordiale. Spain, likewise, is measured up for a French yoke.

The German self-stand-off in Kiel is also worthy of note as, without the B(oard) notation, the fleet and army bounce, keeping the units in Holland and Bavaria, and Kiel defended and unoccupied. If either had had the B notation then the army would've boarded and the bounce not happen. Worth looking out for in the future. Meanwhile, the Danes become 'partners', along with the Dutch in the Second Reich.

In the north, the Norwegians and Swedes become fully paid up subjects (as in taxed) of Tsar Stefan. The Rumanians are as equally thrilled, particularly as this change comes with the help of the Sultan.

Moving around the continent, a resurgent Ottoman Empire returns to the Balkans big-time and the Austro-Hungarians complete the subjugati... errr... integration of the Balkans. Only impoverished Montenegro remains free of a Great Power's protection. However, an attempted Austro-Hungarian attack on Venice is repulsed at the border by the Italians.

Italy completes this round of beneficence by the Great Power's by taking the Swiss under their wing. Switzerland's Perpetual Neutrality means nothing to Il Parlamento Italiano or Original 1958 Diplomacy.

No dislodgements, so no retreats.
