1648 091010: A new Archduke! - DrSwordopolis   (Jun 07, 2010, 2:44 pm)
Oh my, that was fast. I just joined the page a few minutes ago!

I do know a few of you from previous games, the Spaniard and the Turk. I'll do my best to study up on the game's history and get involved in it as soon as possible. In the meantime, Austria has had a change of crown and the new leader will not be holding over any previous grudges or arrangements to the other powers. Assuming the game continues for longer than this season, you're free to try and make new ones with me. Or convince me why I should vote for any of the draw proposals.

Best,
-Nick

Hallo zusammen,

Emperor Louis V managed to defend his beleaguered throne for another year
and indeed has managed to wrest the Electorate of Saxony from the Habsburg
pretender to the imperial crown. Yet the Bourbons have suffered defeats
elsewhere, for Switzerland was conquered by an Austrian army while the remnants
of Cromwell's Scandinavian expeditionary forces descended upon wealthy and
papist Flanders. Considering how Cromwell's army has treated the equally
Catholic Irish, this is probably not such a good time to be Flemish... This also
incidentally mean that the Protestants in the Empire have a new champion for
their cause after having had no greater power to turn to after the demise of
Sweden.

In the Mediterranean the Sultan lurched forwards into Tunis and the Western
Mediterranean after having lately focused only on Italian conquests.

The Polish republic has equally sought to expand her influence westwards
and have pushed the Turks out of Greater Poland, liquidated England's erstwhile
Scandinavian empire but for a defenceless Finnish enclave and have sailed
through the Oresund.

All in all, quite a dynamic picture!

The Winter 1659 Retreats/Adjustments are due Friday, 4 June
[now 9 June!], 6 PM CET. Note that the number of adjustments for a number
of powers depends on how the two pending retreats play out. Remember that
adjustments may be made conditional on the preceding retreats.

Hi Everyone,

While I would also like this game to end I will not vote for any of
the proposed draws thus far. I am hereby proposing and will vote yes
for a DIAS. There are a couple of other combinations I would vote
yes
to that I do not participate in but haven't seen them proposed
yet. I
will not propose them as it will reveal my intent to all should the
game continue but would certainly vote a private yes if they come
up.

Good Luck with the rest of the game.

1648 091010: Fall 1659 Moves - charlesf   (Jun 02, 2010, 1:08 pm)

The Winter 1659 Retreats/Adjustments are due Friday, 4 June,
6 PM CET. Note that the number of adjustments for a number of powers
depends on how the two pending retreats play out. Remember that adjustments may
be made conditional on the preceding retreats.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Hallo zusammen,

the focal point of this season's action were the northern plains of Italy.
For it is there that Louis' armies suffered a crushing defeat, spelling the end
to French influence in the country of Dante and Machiavelli. Certainly Italy has
known many masters over the past decade. First the Spaniards ordered much of the
country's affairs, then the French came across the Alps much as they had done
back in 1494 and now it is the turn of the Sultan to reign over much of bella
Italia.

I'm sorry that I kept you waiting for the adjucation longer than I
anticipated. I'm afraid I simply didn't get round to having the block of time at
my home computer necessary to do the adjucation.

1648 091010: Winter 1658 Retreats/Adjustments - Re... - charlesf   (May 22, 2010, 4:45 pm)

As I've previously notified the game's players, I'm afraid the past
adjucation was affected by a mistake of mine. I failed to take note that Nigs'
adjustment order was earmarked as being merely provisional in nature. Since Nigs
got in touch with me immediately after I had published the adjucation, reminding
me of the matter and stating his preferred A Lorraine build, I had to consider
how to proceed.

I wouldn't want to see any player suffer on account of a screw-up on my
part. I believe that Nigs' change of heart was not affected in any manner by
having seen the other players' orders (and am assured of the same by him). So I
don't see any undue advantage acruing to Nigs here.

That's why, after giving the matter due thought, I've chosen to amend the
adjucation. I'm sorry for screw-up of mine and hope that you guys agree that the
course I've chosen presents the lesser evil in these unfortunate
circumstances.

Unless anyone wishes for any deadline delay, our schedule shall remain the
same.

---

Hallo zusammen,

since I've received a full set of orders and nobody asked for the
adjucation being delayed until after the deadline, I'm getting this
season's adjucation out of the door somewhat sooner.

And it so happens that we've now made it through a whole decade since
Europe's dignitaries assembled in Westphalia in an effort to craft a lasting
peace. Well, those hopes were quickly dashed. The geopolitical lay of the land
has changed almost beyond recognition since then. For starters, only six powers
survived the rigours of this new age. An accomplishment in itself, no
doubt.

Hi
guys,

I'm afraid I made a mistake
regarding this adjucation. Here's a heads-up that the adjucation may change,
depending on what advice I'm given by those experienced GMs I've consulted on
the matter.

1648 091010: Fall 1658 Moves - charlesf   (May 19, 2010, 2:18 pm)

Hallo zusammen,

the saga of the Swedish Vasas has ended in valiant tragedy. King
Charles X, cornered in North-East Germany, fell on his sword as Polish marines
stormed the breached bastions of the once formidable fortress of Stettin rather
than suffering the indignity of surrender and captivity.

Matt, many thanks for taking over the Swedish realm back in Winter 1652.
Six long years of your rule followed and you never failed the morale check that
befalls some players as their fortunes take a dive. I'd ask you to submit an EOG
for later publication while the events are still fresh in your mind, say by
Wednesday next week?

Now, being down to six powers, how have those others fared?

The Commonwealth of England seems to have lost its will to resist Stuart
restoration, for all its units remained immobile. This has allowed Stuart
heralds to proclaim Charles II King also outside of St Giles Cathedral,
Edinburgh. The Emperor can thus rejoice at that piece of good news while
more worrying reports have reached Paris from the "Midi".

In the Mediterranean, the Sultan conquered the Grand Duchy of
Tuscany, thanks to Bourbon support. I dare say that the Porte's court officials
are adding "Master of Italy" to the long list of the Sultan's titles.

Lastly, peace overtures have come to naught. The DIAS proposal
failed.

The 1648 Retreats/Adjustments are due this Friday, 6 PM CET.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Hallo zusammen,

the Stuarts are back! Young Charles has landed in the West Country to
reclaim the throne and punish those who executed his father. The Third English
Civil War has begun! No chance of a Cavalier-Roundhead Coalition, I guess... "I
agree with Charles" T-shirts are apparently outselling "I agree with Oliver"
ones. -Ah, ok, couldn't do without a UK election reference here... Smile

Over on the continent, the Archduke has scored some success as the
Electorate of Brandenburg was wrested out of the hands of the Swedish Vasas,
leaving only Swedish Pomerania under their rule.

In the wider Baltic arena, Poland is now fully ascendant and has
established total naval supremacy east of the Oresund. Quite remarkable
considering how young and inexperienced a service the Polish navy happens to be.
No doubt most of their ships are captained by Dutch and German officers.

What about the Mediterranean? Well, the Sultan's galleys have moved forward
in one long daisy-chain. Meanwhile, the Spaniards have moved forcibly on the
Emperor's beleaguered realm and have also been sighted off Catholic
Ireland.

Now, a DIAS proposal has been put forward. So let the voting
begin.

There are no pending retreats, so we move on to a May 19 deadline, prelims
being due on May 17.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Hi Everyone -

Just a quick update.  I had my medical procedure Tuesday - 6 hours under general anesthetics  - really knocked me out.  I was discharged from the hospital yesterday.  Now we have to wait to see the results.
