dc188 - Spring 1904 Retreats - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
GAME NOTES:
Sorry folks. Work hit me hard after my vacation and this has been my first moment of freedom. Getting up at 5:30 for diplomacy, when normally I wake at 7, is the least I owe you for these results.

That being said, I have received a lot of preliminary orders for the Fall. Thanks so much. I'm going to make the deadline Tuesday, so that everyone has a final chance to look over orders and the few that haven't submitted can have a chance to submit.

DEADLINES:
Fall 1904 - Tuesday September 2, 2008 at 21:00GMT (5pm EDT).
Retreats (if necessary) - Wednesday 9/3 at 21:00GMT (5pm EDT).
Winter 1904 (even if there are no retreats) - Thursday September 4, 2008 at 21:00GMT (5pm EDT)

ORDERS:

Germany:
A Liverpool - Edinburgh
Russia:
F Norway - Norwegian Sea
A Ukraine - Moscow

dc187 spring 03 results - revised - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
It would appear that the results I sent out yesterday were flawed. I am
extremely sorry. The corrected results map is attached and the details
of the moves are below. I would appreciate if people do check them and
come back to with anything that seems odd.

We've got four retreats: English F London and F North Sea; Austrian A
Serbia; and the French F Spain. The deadline will now be Monday, noon,
on 1 September. To those who've already sent in retreat orders - I'll

Hamish Williams wrote:

There you go - I praise RealPolitik for resolving the moves around the
North Sea and within minutes it's pointed out to me that the result
might be wrong and that the English fleet should have been dislodged.
I have to agree, when using my brain rather than my mouse, the
supported Germany does seem to have succeeded.

Give me until tomorrow to print everything out, resend the results (as
they are, or altered), and reset the deadline.

CC: dc201(at)diplomaticcorp.com

Autumn 952 retreats are:
France:
A Hedeby - Mecklenburg
A Zurich - Lombardy
SlavicNations:
A Beograd - Macedonia

Surprisingly the Arab Caliphates have NRR'd and thus their Fleet in Palermo and their Army in Tarsus are disbanded. Perhaps the upside to that is that they get a Build in return.
More shockingly, ERE and Sverige may discover that the fires that burned down Kalmar and Beograd left them with fewer SCs than they thought they had.
Most awe-inspiring however is the incredible expansion of Burgundy that has used the year 952 to expand its empire with 5 SCs; and not just that but he also managed to free up 5 of its Home SCs so it can use all builds!!

ArabCaliphates: Supp 5 Unit 4 Build 1
Burgundy: Supp 14 Unit 9 Build 5
Danmark: Supp 7 Unit 8 Remove 1
EasternRomanEmpire: Supp 13 Unit 11 Build 2 (Beograd no longer is a SC)
France: Supp 5 Unit 8 Remove 3
SlavicNations: Supp 13 Unit 12 Build 1
Norge: Supp 13 Unit 11 Build 2
Sverige: Supp 8 Unit 9 Remove 1 (Kalmar no longer is a SC)

Deadline for the adjustments is Friday Aug 29 at 23:00 GMT.
Looking ahead at Spring 953 deadline: Mark your calendar for Sep 3 at 23:00 GMT.

I have attached the GIF and DPY file for Winter 952.
Note that I managed to alter the DPY file so that it wouldn't count the SCs for the destroyed cities of Kalmar and Beograd. I have not been able however to alter the DPY file to completely remove these cities as Supply Centers (I would welcome any advice on this).

Solo win - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Hi guys,

I wanted to ask the board a question regarding solo victories. My last game I've achieved a solo in 1906, with a control of 22 centre out of 34 in the standard map (standard rules). I wanted to know if that was a diplomaticcorp reccord, given the amount of centres controled and the year it ended. Feel free to provide exemple of solos you have had or seen achieved.

Cheers,

Nick Cherrier

Viking victory conditions for Solo & Scorched... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Scorched Earth offers a whole new strategy where Supply Centers can be destroyed before they fall in your enemy's hands.

This adds another level of anticipation.
For the attacker: rushing in too late and you'll find that the SC is on fire and lost forever. A defender may choose to set fire to its SCs if it feels threatened and desparate about its chances of survival. Beleagering an enemy may not be the best strategy.
For the defender: destroy the SC you're occupying too early and you loose the extra unit; hesitate too long and your chances of destroying it may be gone.

Viking rules state that a Solo victory requires a minimum of 26 SCs.
One player has argued that "in theory a player could be deprived of a solo due to reasons having nothing to do with his skill." and suggested "a vote that 26 wins, or 50% of the total."

My opinion as a GM is that Scorched Earth requires more from the Diplomatic Skills to prevent that no 26 SC are left for a Solo. Sooth the other players' into trusting you, team up with other players, avoid brute-force, etcetera. Subtlety is key here.

That it is possible to win by a Solo was shown in the previous Viking game.

But since this is YOUR game, I would like you - the players - to decide.
Let the voting begin...

Concerning Solo Victories - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Nick,

Solo wins are always something to be proud of, seeing as how many games bog into a stalemate... This isn't anything surprising - if there is a clear front-runner then the rest of the board usually gangs together to try to prevent them from winning. A 22 center win in 1906 is definitely very cool.

But I don't think we keep records of this stuff in DC. The Hall of Games is there, so I totally recommend poking through it and checking it out.

Comparing one solo win to another is like comparing two flawless diamonds. Each is stunning in its own way. Imagine soloing an Imperial game, with a minimum winning condition of 70 centers. Or soloing in one of Sims FOG games - where you can't even see the entire board...

In one case, I saw a Germany convince the rest of the board that he deserved to solo even though he only had 12 centers. Nowhere near victory conditions - yet he persuaded the entire group of players to agree to it. It was a brilliant piece of diplomacy.

Anyways, just my two cents worth.. Cheers,

Trout

Correction: An error in the .map file failed Britain's supported move F
JAV-SUM which should have succeeded.

The .map file has been corrected and posted in
http://mainecav.org/diplomacy/imperial1841
The Zip file has been updated as well.

A correct .DPW file for RealWorld has been uploaded to

Please note the change of positions: there is a British fleet in Sumatra
and Java is unoccupied.

Hi,
If you ask for stats, expect me to chime in... Smile

All-time fastest solo: dc088
(http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc08Cool

Won by Christine in 3 (THREE! Count them uno-dos-tres) game years, GM'd by Vegas, a gunboat game of the Hundred Years War. This is a 3-player variant, and she smacked it down for sure sweeping this one in lightning time - almost sure to be a record never beaten. (of course I should never say never!)

Fastest "Standard" solo: "Mostly Harmless"... dc144.
GM'd by yours truly, and won by David Ellsworth in 5 game years.

Your game, Ze, would be the 2nd quickest solo, in 6 years, then I count at least 2 that were won in 7 years. Congrats of course - now the key is to be able to win a game AFTER soloing. Very Happy

I had to respond to a horse emergency this morning, so our Cardassian player had even longer to respond than I initially gave him and still - not a peep. I suppose he's away for the holiday weekend, so...

Does anyone want to wait till Tuesday to see if that is the case - or begin recruiting for a replacement? We're only in the Fall move of the first year at a point that calling this an NMR would have drastic effects on the game's timeline - hey, this IS Star Trek - it's a popular plot device.

I'll hold off till I read what you folks have to say.

Jerry

Thank guys I really appreciate both of your responses. Former Trout you are indeed right to bring me down from my little cloud, because all solos are by definition (as I understand it, after just games) the perfect victory. Anyway, thanks for the Germany victory story with 12 centers, now that is truly impressive.

Poobaloo, thanks for these stats, it's really what I was after. And thanks for the praises and warning. I'll try and rise to the occasion by achieving more solos! lol

Its going to be a bit of a wait, but I would rather wait until Tuesday and see if we can get something out of him than go through the hassle of recruiting a new player at this early spot (it took us a long time to just get 7 players anyway)

The Borg Queen says wait until tuesday.
Cheers,
